Abstract:The digitalization of the economy is one of the drivers of the fourth industrial revolution. This trend is already heavily permeating biology laboratories and rapidly moving into chemistry as well. Notably, automated laboratories enhance process quality and intensification while freeing researchers from repetitive tasks. With these societal changes in place, students need to be prepared for the advanced digitization of chemistry and science by teaching fundamental chemistry concepts in combination with emerging Industry 4.0 technologies, including programming and automation. We describe an undergraduate classroom exercise at the interface of chemistry, computer science and engineering based on the development of an autonomous titration platform. Following an inquiry learning ansatz, the exercise focuses on standard titration experiments which are first executed manually, then automatically and finally in full autonomy by a student-designed robotic platform. We demonstrate that the exercise introduced in this work enables students to learn fundamental concepts in analytical chemistry, naturally integrates basic aspects of programming and automation, and as a consequence promotes and reinforces the detailed understanding of experimental processes and measurements. The exercise is designed in a collaborative active learning framework to encourage complex critical thinking and creative problem solving and thus prepares students for the next-generation chemistry laboratories.
Advancing global chemical education through interactive teaching tools

Abstract:This perspective highlights our recent efforts to develop interactive resources in chemical education for worldwide usage. First, we highlight online tutorials that connect organic chemistry to medicine and popular culture, along with game-like resources for active learning. Next, we describe efforts to aid students in learning to visualize chemical structures in three dimensions. Finally, we present recent approaches toward engaging children and the general population through organic chemistry coloring and activity books. Collectively, these tools have benefited hundreds of thousands of users worldwide. We hope this perspective promotes a spirit of innovation in chemical education and spurs the development of additional free, interactive, and widely accessible chemical education resources.

Physical Chemistry Education and Research in an Open-Sourced Future

Abstract:Proficiency in physical chemistry requires a broad skill set. Successful trainees often receive mentoring from senior colleagues (research advisors, postdocs, etc.). Mentoring introduces trainees to experimental design, instrumental setup, and complex data interpretation. In lab settings, trainees typically learn by customizing experimental setups, and developing new ways of analyzing data. Learning alongside experts strengthens these fundamentals, and places a focus on the clear communication of research problems. However, this level of input is not scalable, nor can it easily be shared with all researchers or students, particularly those that face socioeconomic barriers to accessing mentoring. New approaches to training will therefore progress the field of physical chemistry. Technology is disrupting and democratising scientific education and research. The emergence of free online courses and video resources enables students to learn in a style that suits them. Higher degrees of automation remove cumbersome and sometimes arbitrary technical barriers to learning new techniques, allowing one to collect high quality data quickly. Open sourcing of data and analysis tools has increased transparency, lowered barriers to access, and accelerated scientific dissemination. However, these advances also can lead to "black box" approaches to acquiring and analyzing data, where convenience replaces understanding and errors and misrepresentations become more common. The risk is a breakdown in education: if one does not understand the fundamentals of a technique or analysis, it is difficult to correctly discern the practical limits of an experiment, distinguish signal from noise, troubleshoot problems, or take full advantage of powerful analytical procedures. Our vision of the future of physical chemistry is built around democratized learning, where deep technical and analytical expertise from physical chemists is made freely available. Advancements in technical education through expert-generated educational resources and AI-based tools will enrich physical chemistry education. A holistic approach to education will prepare the physical chemists of 2050 to adapt to rapidly advancing technological tools, which accelerate the pace of research. Technical education will be enhanced by accessible open-source instrumentation and analysis procedures, which will provide instruments and analysis scripts specifically designed for education. High quality, comparable data from standardized open-source instruments will feed into accessible databases and analysis projects, providing others the opportunity to store and analyze both failed and successful experiments. The coupling of open-source education, hardware, and analysis will democratize physical chemistry while addressing risks associated with "black box" approaches.

Abstract:The feasibility and practical meaning of the teaching method with "Theoretical-Virtual-Real" integration practice are carefully discussed during the process of a group of American students doing chemical engineering experiment by using the online cloud class with virtual simulation software.The research method mainlyincludes observation and discussion in the classroom as well as questionnaire survey.It's proven that the way of teaching by cloud class with virtual simulation software is a creative and effective improvement from traditional teaching method.It has a big advantage in saving educational costs and helping students to learn by themselves anywhere anytime.

Abstract:Based on the present circumstances of physical chemistry teaching for engineering majors,such as emphasis on theory,diminishment on practical problem,overmuch interdisciplinary course with the previous one and the lack of new theories,the innovation toward the course content and methods of the instructions of physical chemistry,i. e.,the choice of textbook,the adjustment of teaching content,the relationship with the previous course,the enhancement of the classical theory as well as the introduction of the frontier theory,etc.,were discussed.

Abstract:The work reported here focuses upon the progress of a university department as it attempts to orchestrate the interplay between the demands of undergraduate chemistry and the particular learning characteristics of students, and the approaches to teaching and learning favoured by staff. The discipline of chemistry is depicted as a practical scientific discipline that is continuously undergoing change and advancement and not as a static, abstract body of transmitted knowledge. The learners in the course come from a range of backgrounds, and have been surveyed for their learning preferences using Kolb’s (1999) Learning Styles Inventory. This has allowed the department to ‘tune’ or tailor some of its course provision towards these characteristics. These developments include ‘enhancement’ lectures to broaden the appeal of chemistry, moves to enact a greater devolution of learning to the learners, and the re-configuring of traditional laboratory exercises and project work to increase learner autonomy. The orchestration of learning in this way does not come without some instances of resistance to change but, in the main, as evidenced in some of the feedback from students, is an important move in the professional re-shaping of university provision of the science.

Computer Applications in Engineering Education

Abstract:Teachers can create engaging learning environments in engineering courses through pedagogical innovation using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Introductory chemistry courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines typically include the study of molecular models and periodic properties, which are inherently visual concepts. Unfortunately, these concepts are often taught using two‐dimensional drawings, although three‐dimensional (3D) printing offers an engaging approach to learning chemistry in these disciplines. Undergraduate engineering students are provided with modelling software and a 3D printer, allowing them to construct 3D models of basic Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory shapes using polylactic acid. The results of this research showed that the average score of the students in the control group was lower than that of the students in the 3D technology group. This research has found that the learning curve for modelling and the time required for printing are high, limiting the practical application of this exercise in student laboratory classes. However, in an appropriate environment, 3D printing technology has the potential to be a valuable tool for teaching and learning molecular models and periodic properties of chemistry courses in STEM disciplines.

Abstract:: Traditional university chemistry laboratories usually feature tedious teaching process, which may result in passive study, less or no learning interaction, and the lack of independent thinking, operation and innovation. This is bad for us to achieve the targets of comprehensive training upon freshmen in universities. With the rapid development of internet technology, a variety of information-based teaching modes have been established. Course Cubic system can merge several teaching modes, such as experiment preview, WeChat platform, and flipped class into a student-centered overall process and intelligent teaching mode. Students can conduct practice tests before experiments, record and upload experimental data in class, and carry out mutual evaluations after class. The practice shows that Course Cubic system can improve the efficiency of experiment teaching and greatly promote students’ self-directed learning, increasing the interaction in experiment teaching.

Abstract:Summaries English The author has been responsible for first and secondsemester courses in physical chemistry for more than 10 years. In one subject, which is studied by 100 to 250 students per year, he and some of his colleagues have introducedteaching methods which differ considerably from the classical ones. Students working in small groups, the usage of prepared materials by the teaching staff, the integration of theoretical and directed teaching, the continual examinationof knowledge, the almost complete disappearance of coursestaught in a school‐masterly way have led to consequences which have had a positive influence on the relationship between the students and the teachers and on the quality of teaching. In this article, the author presents an interim evaluation of the experiences gained in conducting the course.

Abstract:Chemistry and chemical technology contribute to the quality of life on this planet in many areas: health, nutrition, agriculture, transportation, materials and energy production, and industrial development. Chemistry is at its most useful to society when chemists and non-chemists with decision-making responsibilities work with mutual understanding to address the chemistry-related issues facing their communities. Thus, it would seem obvious that all who study chemistry should learn about the interactions of chemistry and society as an integral part of their classroom instruction. However, historically, the tendency worldwide has been to include societal content in chemistry courses only at the lower secondary level. This is changing. This paper explores instructional materials developed by the American Chemical Society that place chemistry in its societal context for high school and college students. This includes a discussion of green chemistry materials that introduce students to the concepts associated with developing environmentally benign processes and products.

Abstract:Der KI‐basierte Chatbot „ChatGTP“ zog in kürzester Zeit viel Aufmerksamkeit auf sich, da er einen leichten und unmittelbaren Zugang sowie die Nutzung einer künstlichen Intelligenz (KI) bietet. Der Chatbot löst dabei unterschiedlichste Aufgaben und gibt Antworten auf die ihm gestellten Fragen. Hierzu können dem Chatbot sehr komplexe Aufgabenstellungen auch aus dem Chemieunterricht präsentiert werden, die dieser umfangreich und (zum Teil) korrekt bearbeitet. Diese neuen Möglichkeiten stellt das Lehren und Lernen vor eine neue Situation, in der eine KI die (Haus‐)Aufgaben für Schüler:innen lösen kann. Wie weit diese Technologie auf der Basis von Large Language Models ist und welche neuen Herausforderungen dies für das Lehren und Lernen im Chemieunterricht mit sich bringen kann, wird anhand von Beispielaufgaben zu Tensiden diskutiert. The AI‐based Chatbot “ChatGTP” gained a lot of attention in short time because it offers easy and immediate access to artificial intelligence (AI). The chatbot can solve a variety of tasks and questions. It can handle complex tasks, which it processes extensively and (partly) correctly. These new possibilities present a new situation for teaching and learning, in which an AI solves tasks for students. The article discusses what new challenges this technology raises for teaching and learning in chemistry education. For this purpose, the chatbot is assigned two sample tasks on surfactants.

Abstract:At TU Bergakademie Freiberg, an interactive cross‐reality lab for remote learning of thermal separation processes is now part of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. This paper investigates the development hurdles of a distillation experiment and presents a redefined setup that meets the modern learning requirements of Industry 4.0. Laboratory courses are key to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs in higher education, but often lack the flexibility for distance learning and inclusiveness for all students. To address these challenges, TU Bergakademie Freiberg introduced remote laboratories not only for international degree programs and the "Disti4Study" application, which provides interactive visualization of industrial thermal separation processes. This paper focuses on the development and didactic challenges associated with the "Continuous Distillation Laboratory". It illustrates how rethinking the technical and didactic frameworks of traditional laboratories can align with new learning objectives, such as those related to Industry 4.0, including the Internet of Things and data management.
