Abstract:Proficiency in physical chemistry requires a broad skill set. Successful trainees often receive mentoring from senior colleagues (research advisors, postdocs, etc.). Mentoring introduces trainees to experimental design, instrumental setup, and complex data interpretation. In lab settings, trainees typically learn by customizing experimental setups, and developing new ways of analyzing data. Learning alongside experts strengthens these fundamentals, and places a focus on the clear communication of research problems. However, this level of input is not scalable, nor can it easily be shared with all researchers or students, particularly those that face socioeconomic barriers to accessing mentoring. New approaches to training will therefore progress the field of physical chemistry. Technology is disrupting and democratising scientific education and research. The emergence of free online courses and video resources enables students to learn in a style that suits them. Higher degrees of automation remove cumbersome and sometimes arbitrary technical barriers to learning new techniques, allowing one to collect high quality data quickly. Open sourcing of data and analysis tools has increased transparency, lowered barriers to access, and accelerated scientific dissemination. However, these advances also can lead to "black box" approaches to acquiring and analyzing data, where convenience replaces understanding and errors and misrepresentations become more common. The risk is a breakdown in education: if one does not understand the fundamentals of a technique or analysis, it is difficult to correctly discern the practical limits of an experiment, distinguish signal from noise, troubleshoot problems, or take full advantage of powerful analytical procedures. Our vision of the future of physical chemistry is built around democratized learning, where deep technical and analytical expertise from physical chemists is made freely available. Advancements in technical education through expert-generated educational resources and AI-based tools will enrich physical chemistry education. A holistic approach to education will prepare the physical chemists of 2050 to adapt to rapidly advancing technological tools, which accelerate the pace of research. Technical education will be enhanced by accessible open-source instrumentation and analysis procedures, which will provide instruments and analysis scripts specifically designed for education. High quality, comparable data from standardized open-source instruments will feed into accessible databases and analysis projects, providing others the opportunity to store and analyze both failed and successful experiments. The coupling of open-source education, hardware, and analysis will democratize physical chemistry while addressing risks associated with "black box" approaches.

Abstract:For some professionally, vocationally, or technically oriented careers, curricula delivered in higher education establishments may focus on teaching material related to a single discipline. By contrast, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary teaching (MITT) results in improved affective and cognitive learning and critical thinking, offering learners/students the opportunity to obtain a broad general knowledge base. Chemistry is a discipline that sits at the interface of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) subjects (and those aligned with or informed by STEMM subjects). This article discusses the significant potential of inclusion of chemistry in MITT activities in higher education and the real-world importance in personal, organizational, national, and global contexts. It outlines the development and implementation challenges attributed to legacy higher education infrastructures (that call for creative visionary leadership with strong and supportive management and administrative functions), and curriculum design that ensures inclusivity and collaboration and is pitched and balanced appropriately. It concludes with future possibilities, notably highlighting that chemistry, as a discipline, underpins industries that have multibillion dollar turnovers and employ millions of people across the world.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Reflections on Three Different High School Chemistry Lab Formats during COVID-19 Remote Learning

Abstract:Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, education at all levels has temporarily shifted to remote learning, hobbling an integral component of chemistry courses: the laboratory. The chemistry lab is crucial for developing student engagement and learning with hands-on, relevant experiments in a socially dynamic classroom setting. The transition to remote learning consequently presents additional obstacles for chemistry educators and students, supplemental to challenges experienced by all disciplines. This article conveys preliminary indications about various remote learning laboratory scenarios by comparing three different formats for high school chemistry laboratories from the 2020 spring semester, with the aim of informing preparations for hands-on laboratory instruction in the fall. Abstract:The digitalization of the economy is one of the drivers of the fourth industrial revolution. This trend is already heavily permeating biology laboratories and rapidly moving into chemistry as well. Notably, automated laboratories enhance process quality and intensification while freeing researchers from repetitive tasks. With these societal changes in place, students need to be prepared for the advanced digitization of chemistry and science by teaching fundamental chemistry concepts in combination with emerging Industry 4.0 technologies, including programming and automation. We describe an undergraduate classroom exercise at the interface of chemistry, computer science and engineering based on the development of an autonomous titration platform. Following an inquiry learning ansatz, the exercise focuses on standard titration experiments which are first executed manually, then automatically and finally in full autonomy by a student-designed robotic platform. We demonstrate that the exercise introduced in this work enables students to learn fundamental concepts in analytical chemistry, naturally integrates basic aspects of programming and automation, and as a consequence promotes and reinforces the detailed understanding of experimental processes and measurements. The exercise is designed in a collaborative active learning framework to encourage complex critical thinking and creative problem solving and thus prepares students for the next-generation chemistry laboratories.

Abstract:The role and efficacy of the laboratory in chemical education have recently been a subject of renewed discussion as researchers are called upon to address the question of whether laboratory education lives up to expectations. The COVID-19 pandemic, which forced most of the global student population to temporarily adopt remote learning, offers an unparalleled case study to investigate types of outcomes resulting from a variety of adjustments made to laboratory education. This scoping review article focuses on the reports of laboratory learning in chemistry and closely related disciplines during COVID-19 to analyze the types of adjustments made to laboratory curricula and the immediate effect of these adjustments on students. The aggregated findings suggest that a lack of hands-on laboratory experience was detrimental to certain types of learning and engagement but that other types of learning were successfully achieved remotely. For researchers, departments, and university administrators, the differentiation in these findings could help inform the ongoing discussion about the future of laboratory education. For instructors and student support staff, the findings indicate potential areas of deficiency and strength for the COVID-19 student cohort going forward. Finally, a laboratory learning theory and pedagogy are proposed to guide the use of the laboratory in chemical education and potentially in other laboratory-based sciences as well.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Chemical innovations enhance our quality of life by responding to challenges in e.g., energy production, medical care, and material development. Studying and understanding chemistry is essential for future solutions. However, chemistry is not accessible to all learners. In South Africa, the challenge is to make chemistry accessible to all participants, especially in the North West province, in poor schools without easy access to resources and with inadequately trained teachers. One way to make chemistry more accessible is through micro-scale chemistry. With this goal in mind, the MYLAB small-scale chemistry kit was designed. The kit was developed around the 5 ml test tube (our size determinant). We wanted all learners and teachers to have hands-on, minds-on chemistry practical experience. Thus, workshops were organised to (i) train the teachers in the use of the kits and (ii) to allow learners to experience practicals hands-on. This article gives an overview of how the use of the MYLAB small-scale chemistry kit was successful in making chemistry accessible to all.

Abstract:This perspective highlights our recent efforts to develop interactive resources in chemical education for worldwide usage. First, we highlight online tutorials that connect organic chemistry to medicine and popular culture, along with game-like resources for active learning. Next, we describe efforts to aid students in learning to visualize chemical structures in three dimensions. Finally, we present recent approaches toward engaging children and the general population through organic chemistry coloring and activity books. Collectively, these tools have benefited hundreds of thousands of users worldwide. We hope this perspective promotes a spirit of innovation in chemical education and spurs the development of additional free, interactive, and widely accessible chemical education resources.

Abstract:The American Chemical Society (ACS) Committee on Minority Affairs (CMA) endeavors to support all chemistry faculty and staff as they educate all of our students during this pandemic. While the chemistry education community and the ACS have both provided resources as most institutions transitioned to virtual platforms, this pandemic disproportionally affects our students of color, lower socio-economic and rural backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Specifically, these students must overcome hurdles of technology access, environmental disruptions, and cultural pressures in order to be successful. Therefore, CMA has formulated partnerships with both academic and industrial institutions to highlight some best practices to improve future virtual learning experiences of these oftentimes marginalized students. Specifically, the work presented here examines programs and policies at three academic institutions with very different student body demographics and surrounding learning environments (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), and Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD)) with an attempt to identify variables that enhance marginalized student success in chemistry courses. The combination of their results suggests elements such as access to technology, home responsibility, and impostor syndrome, that other learning programs should consider to increase virtual learning success. Furthermore, other stopgap measures implemented at industrial partners give insight as to how these considerations can be implemented during virtual internship programs to meet their learning objectives associated with entering their institutional pipeline.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Systems thinking approaches underscore a holistic view of the components comprising a dynamic system, including their connections and interdependencies as well as their interactions with other systems. Compelling international calls have been made recently to infuse chemistry education with systems thinking so as to not only better illustrate chemistry's connection to other disciplines, but also explain and address emerging global challenges. Doing so presents exciting opportunities for chemistry educators to incorporate creative new activities into their courses. However, to employ systems thinking effectively in the chemistry classroom, we argue that considering <i>the learner</i> must take precedent. Relatively little is known regarding how chemistry learners interact with systems thinking, or the knowledge and skills necessary for chemistry learners to productively engage in systems thinking. In this article, we begin to address the discipline's knowledge gap about learning using a systems thinking approach. Our goal is to explore systems thinking from the perspective of the chemistry learner using current learning frameworks relevant to chemistry education (i.e., information processing theory, meaningful learning, sociocultural theory, and three-dimensional learning). Using this analysis, we highlight opportunities and challenges for employing systems thinking in chemistry education, to encourage further educational research and development using this approach.

Successes and Challenges: Online Teaching and Learning of Chemistry in Higher Education in China in the Time of COVID-19

Abstract:The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in China has changed higher education dramatically, with a distinctive rise in online instruction. Here, we describe the major successes and challenges encountered during the full implementation of online chemistry instruction in higher education in China based on questionnaires answered by 56 teachers and 432 students in two universities. In addition to describing the impacts of online chemistry instruction on teachers, students, chemistry experiments, student assessments, and technology, our work seeks to provide insights into how teachers, students, and technologies rise to meet the challenges in this difficult time. Our survey indicates the common challenges for teachers and students that arise from no face-to-face interaction in online instruction. Apart from that, teachers have to be familiar with internet-based technologies and online teaching tools, adjust their teaching plans and teaching methods, and quickly adapt to the new situation. Teachers also need to improve their teacher–student interaction and maintain student interest and engagement during online teaching. To become a successful online learner, students need to be more proactive and self-disciplined. In addition, an effective online teaching method for chemistry experiments has been proposed. Abstract:The switch to distance learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has required chemistry instructors to quickly adapt and innovate to provide remote instruction as effectively as possible. With minimal advance notice, developing and delivering online lecture materials that are engaging and laboratory activities that approximate a hands-on experience has certainly been an all-around challenge. Creating content that ensures the inclusion and success of all students, including those who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH), requires a great deal of consideration to be effective under any circumstances. To be sure, mainstream courses that are inclusive of D/HH learners necessitate, at the very least, the successful inclusion of access services (interpreters and captionists). However, in these abnormal times, an online instructional environment that accommodates D/HH students' preferences and abilities and that is attentive to the unique social and emotional challenges that many of these students are experiencing must be established. Our campus provides both direct instruction and mainstream instructional environments for D/HH students, giving us unique perspectives on how to instruct and support students with the pandemic-forced switch to online learning. With this communication, we endeavor to share these observations and experiences with other chemistry faculty so that they may support D/HH students in their own classrooms and laboratories.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The University of South Africa's (UNISA) College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) stands unique in the world by offering laboratory-based disciplines through Open Distance Learning (ODL) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Lack of postgraduate programmes in chemistry at the very few ODL institutions offering undergraduate chemistry courses is presumably the consequence of the high costs associated with chemistry research and the requirement for sustained access to laboratories, analytical facilities and instructors by the students. The practice of offering postgraduate programmes in laboratory-based disciplines within the ODL context is discussed in detail by considering the practices of the chemistry department at UNISA. The department has a history and culture of research and postgraduate student training dating back to the correspondence era. The pitfalls and misconceptions are highlighted and working models for research-based postgraduate student training within the ODL framework are projected. Abstract:This study systematically reviews empirical studies on digital learning technologies and related instructional techniques for chemistry education from 2020 to 2022. Using the PRISMA criteria, the relevant article's history was followed using the Web of Science, Scopus, and ERIC databases. In this digital era, studies on pedagogical innovations mixed with new technologies are proliferating as a result of technological progress and the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. A growing corpus of empirical research indicates the potential for incorporating digital technology in diverse educational settings. Various new technologies, including robotics, learning analytics, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR), have found extensive use and have bright futures in the field of chemistry education. According to the current study, VR and digital learning apps were the most completely examined among the recognized technologies employed in chemistry education. The main areas of interest in the classroom were visualization, engagement with chemical structures, and hands-on activities. The findings of this study, which examined impact, advantages, disadvantages, and challenges of online technology in the process of chemistry education, lends insight on the rapidly evolving disciplines of chemistry education research and technologically enhanced instruction.Keywords: digital, chemistry, education, technology, virtual.
Leveraging Undergraduate Learning Assistants When Implementing New Laboratory Curricula

Abstract:At a large-enrollment research university, undergraduate chemistry courses for non-chemistry majors were delivered remotely during the 2020–2021 academic year, with a return to in-person instruction planned for January 2022. Because this return to in-person instruction coincided with the transition of second-year students from general chemistry labs to organic chemistry labs, the instructional staff recognized a need for remedial laboratory curricula for students with no prior in-person laboratory experience. Simultaneously, we desired to implement undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) in non-chemistry major organic chemistry laboratories for the first time at our university. In this paper, we describe our approach for leveraging undergraduate LAs to (1) test new laboratory curriculum and (2) address feelings of comfort and safety for students with no prior in-person laboratory experience. Benefits of our LA program perceived by students include increased laboratory efficiency and improved student learning from near-peer instructors; benefits perceived by LAs include the development of professional skills and teamwork with graduate student teaching assistants. We provide an outline of resources and strategies to enable instructors to simultaneously implement undergraduate LAs and new laboratory curriculum.

Annual Review of Analytical Chemistry

Abstract:Analytical chemistry is a fast-paced field with frequent introduction of new techniques via research labs; however, incorporation of new techniques into academic curricula lags their adoption in research and industry. This review describes the recent educational literature on microfluidics, microcontrollers, and chemometrics in the undergraduate analytical chemistry curriculum. Each section highlights opportunities for nonexpert faculty to get started with these techniques and more advanced implementations suitable for experienced practitioners. While the addition of new topics to any curriculum brings some opportunity costs, student engagement with cutting edge techniques brings many benefits, including enhanced preparation for graduate school and professional careers and development of transferable skills, such as coding. Formal assessment of student outcomes is encouraged to promote broader adoption of these techniques. Abstract:Experimentation plays a crucial role in enhancing students skills. This article discusses current issues in engineering education while also exploring their potential solutions, and it focuses on the integration of online learning into routine teaching, especially online laboratories that flip conventional laboratories. The current online laboratories and corresponding issues are also discussed in detail. Three case studies with the Networked Control System Laboratory (NCSLab), which is an industrial laboratory that mainly focuses on control and automation, are presented to provide detailed examples of how online laboratories can help teaching and learning. Future perspectives on online laboratories toward future experimentation systems are outlined with the possibility of integrating cutting-edge and emerging technologies to enable flexibility, high maintainability, and intelligence for cross-disciplinary/interdisciplinary applications.
