Abstract:Remanence and maximum magnetic energy product (BH)max of hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets can be effectively improved by addition of substances with either high melting point or high saturation magnetization. In this work, we took the advantages of the two approaches and selected a soft magnetic material Fe96.5Si3.5 (wt.%) with both high melting point and high saturation magnetization as the dopant to improve the remanence (or (BH) max). By the addition of 1 wt% Fe96.5Si3.5, the remanence was increased by over 5 % (from 1.36 to 1.43 T) and the coercivity was maintained at a high level (from 1.65 to 1.57 T), resulting in the improved (BH) max from 355 to 391 kJ/m3. Eventually the comprehensive magnetism ((BH) max + H cj value) of the hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnet can be improved to a certain extent. Microstructure observations revealed that the relative volume fraction of the ferromagnetic phase was increased and the texture of grain alignment was improved after the addition of Fe96.5Si3.5, which were responsible for the improved remanence. Meanwhile, the width of the coarse grain region was decreased and the ultrafine grain region was formed near the Fe-Si phase, which are the reasons for the magnetic properties changed.
