Abstract:We prove an essentially optimal large sieve inequality for self-dual Eisenstein series of varying levels. This bound can alternatively be interpreted as a large sieve inequality for rationals ordered by height. The method of proof is recursive, and has some elements in common with Heath-Brown's quadratic large sieve, and the asymptotic large sieve of Conrey, Iwaniec, and Soundararajan.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain two inequalities of the maximum of partial sums of an Lq-mixingale array, and as corollary a strong law of large numbers (SLLN) for an Lq-mixingale sequence is shown by using the moment inequality. Finally, we prove a weak law of large numbers (WLLN) for an Lq-mixingale array without the condition of uniform integrability which is needed in Andrews [Andrews, D.W.K., 1988. Abstract:We establish a general large sieve inequality with sparse sets $\mathcal{S}$ of moduli in the Gaussian integers which are in a sense well-distributed in arithmetic progressions. This extends earlier work of S. Baier on the large sieve with sparse sets of moduli. We then use this result to obtain large sieve bounds for the cases when $\mathcal{S}$ consists of squares of Gaussian integers and of Gaussian primes. Our bound for the case of square moduli improves a recent result by the authors.

Abstract:Let $N(X)$ be the number of integral zeros $(x_1,\dots,x_6)\in [-X,X]^6$ of $\sum_{1\le i\le 6} x_i^3$. Works of Hooley and Heath-Brown imply $N(X)\ll_\epsilon X^{3+\epsilon}$, if one assumes automorphy and GRH for certain Hasse--Weil $L$-functions. Assuming instead a natural large sieve inequality, we recover the same bound on $N(X)$. This is part of a more general statement, for diagonal cubic forms in $\geq 4$ variables, where we allow approximations to Hasse--Weil $L$-functions.

Abstract:For $\Gamma$ a Fuchsian Group of the first kind, we obtain large sieve inequalities with weights the hyperbolic periods of Maass forms of even weight. This is inspired by work of Chamizo, who proved a large sieve inequality with weights values of Maass forms of weight $0$. The motivation is applications in counting problems in $\Gamma_1 \backslash \Gamma / \Gamma_2$, where $\Gamma_1$, $\Gamma_2$ are hyperbolic subgroups of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:We improve the large sieve inequality with $k$th-power moduli, for all $k\ge 4$. Our method relates these inequalities to a restricted variant of Waring's problem. Firstly, we input a classical divisor bound on the number of representations of a positive integer as a sum of two $k$th-powers. Secondly, we input a recent and general result of Wooley on mean values of exponential sums. Lastly, we state a conditional result, based on the conjectural Hardy-Littlewood formula for the number of representations of a large positive integer as a sum of $k+1$ $k$th-powers.

Abstract:We describe a very general abstract form of sieve based on a large sieve inequality which generalizes both the classical sieve inequality of Montgomery (and its higher-dimensional variants), and our recent sieve for Frobenius over function fields. The general framework suggests new applications. We get some first results on the number of prime divisors of ``most'' elements of an elliptic divisibility sequence, and we develop in some detail ``probabilistic'' sieves for random walks on arithmetic groups, e.g., estimating the probability of finding a reducible characteristic polynomial at some step of a random walk on SL(n,Z). In addition to the sieve principle, the applications depend on bounds for a large sieve constant. To prove such bounds involves a variety of deep results, including Property (T) or expanding properties of Cayley graphs, and the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields. It seems likely that this sieve can have further applications.
