What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the Spectral Large Sieve Inequality for Symmetric - Squares. Specifically, the author Matthew P. Young focuses on improving the Spectral Large Sieve Inequality in the symmetric - square form and proves a lower bound, showing that the most optimistic upper bound does not hold for this family of functions. ### Background and Motivation of the Paper In number theory, especially in the study of Automorphic Forms, the Spectral Large Sieve Inequality is an important tool for estimating the upper bounds of certain sums. These sums usually involve the Hecke Eigenvalues of automorphic forms and have wide applications in aspects such as the moments of L - functions and the distribution of zeros. ### Main Results 1. **Improved Spectral Large Sieve Inequality**: - The author improves the Spectral Large Sieve Inequality in the symmetric - square form and gives a more precise upper bound. Specifically, for \(M(\Delta, T, N)\), the author obtains the following result: \[ M(\Delta, T, N)\ll(NT)^\varepsilon\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \Delta T + T^{1/2}N & \text{if }N\leq T,\\ \Delta N + N^{3/2} & \text{if }T\leq N\leq T^2,\\ \frac{N^2}{T} & \text{if }N\geq T^2. \end{array} \right. \] - This result is better than the existing bounds in many parameter ranges. 2. **Proof of the Lower Bound**: - The author also proves a lower bound, showing that the most optimistic upper bound does not hold for the symmetric - square form. Specifically, if \(\Delta\gg(NT)^\delta\), then: \[ M_\infty(\Delta, T, N)\gg\Delta N(NT)^{-\varepsilon}. \] ### Method Overview 1. **Kuznetsov Formula**: - The author uses the Kuznetsov formula to transform the spectral sum into a form containing Kloosterman sums. By analyzing the properties of these sums, the author obtains the required upper bound. 2. **Properties of Characteristic Functions**: - The author studies in detail the properties of the characteristic function \(\hat{F}(\chi)\), especially when \(\chi\) is a primitive character or a trivial character. These properties play a crucial role in deriving the final results. 3. **Harmonic Analysis Techniques**: - The author uses techniques in harmonic analysis, such as Mellin transform and finite Fourier analysis, to handle complex sums and integrals. ### Conclusion This paper provides new tools and methods for research in related fields by improving the Spectral Large Sieve Inequality in the symmetric - square form. These results are not only of great theoretical significance but also have potential value in practical applications, especially in the study of L - functions and automorphic forms.
