Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:The article deals with the study of the existence of a fundamental system of solutions to the differential equations: ( D 2 − 2 Dα + α 2 + β 2 ) y = 0, ( D 2 − 2 Dα + α 2 − β 2 ) y = 0, which are created using higher derivatives of the appropriate functions which are solutions to these equations. Special attention is paid to the solution of the generalized Cauchy problem with initial conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate positive solutions of boundary value problems for a general second-order nonlinear difference equation, which includes a Jacobi operator and a parameter λ. Based on the critical point theory, we obtain the existence of three solutions for the boundary value problem. Then, we establish a strong maximum principle for this problem and obtain some determined open intervals of the parameter λ for the existence of at least two positive solutions. In the end, we give two examples to illustrate our main results.

Abstract:This paper generalizes the results of the first part of the paper [Fecenko, J.—Diekema, E.: On the linear (in)dependence of sequences of derivatives of the functions x n sin x and x n cos x, http://arxiv.org/abs/2305.11184]. The main goal is to prove that the sequence of functions f(x), Df(x), ..., D 2n–1 f(x), where f(x) is x n−1 e αx sin βx or x n−1 e αx cos βx for β ≠ 0, forms a fundamental system of solutions of the differential equation (D 2 – 2αD + α 2 + β 2 ) n y = 0. Or more generally, that the sequence of functions D k f(x), D k+1 f(x), ..., D 2n+k–1 f(x), k ∈ N also forms a fundamental system of solutions of the aforementioned differential equation. The problem is solved using a suitable transformation of the Wronskian matrix, by solving a nonlinear differential equation and then calculating the determinant of the modified Wronskian matrix by applying Laplace's generalized expansion.

'Riemann Equations' in Bidifferential Calculus

Abstract:We consider equations that formally resemble a matrix Riemann (or Hopf) equation in the framework of bidifferential calculus. With different choices of a first-order bidifferential calculus, we obtain a variety of equations, including a semi-discrete and a fully discrete version of the matrix Riemann equation. A corresponding universal solution-generating method then either yields a (continuous or discrete) Cole-Hopf transformation, or leaves us with the problem of solving Riemann equations (hence an application of the hodograph method). If the bidifferential calculus extends to second order, solutions of a system of `Riemann equations' are also solutions of an equation that arises, on the universal level of bidifferential calculus, as an integrability condition. Depending on the choice of bidifferential calculus, the latter can represent a number of prominent integrable equations, like self-dual Yang-Mills, as well as matrix versions of the two-dimensional Toda lattice, Hirota's bilinear difference equation, (2+1)-dimensional NLS, KP and Davey-Stewartson equations. For all of them, a recent (non-isospectral) binary Darboux transformation result in bidifferential calculus applies, which can be specialized to generate solutions of the associated `Riemann equations'. For the latter, we clarify the relation between these specialized binary Darboux transformations and the aforementioned solution-generating method. From (arbitrary size) matrix versions of the `Riemann equations' associated with an integrable equation, possessing a bidifferential calculus formulation, multi-soliton-type solutions of the latter can be generated. This includes `breaking' multi-soliton-type solutions of the self-dual Yang-Mills and the (2+1)-dimensional NLS equation, which are parametrized by solutions of Riemann equations.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the development of methods for constructing asymptotic formulas as x→∞ of a fundamental system of solutions of linear differential equations generated by a symmetric two-term differential expression of odd order. The coefficients of the differential expression belong to classes of functions that allow oscillation (for example, those that do not satisfy the classical Titchmarsh–Levitan regularity conditions). As a model equation, the fifth-order equation i2p(x)y′′′′′+p(x)y′′′′′+q(x)y=λy, along with various behaviors of coefficients p(x),q(x), is investigated. New asymptotic formulas are obtained for the case when the function h(x)=−1+p−1/2(x)∉L1[1,∞) significantly influences the asymptotics of solutions to the equation. The case when the equation contains a nontrivial bifurcation parameter is studied.

Abstract:In this paper, a special second-order Briot–Bouquet differential equation is studied. We construct explicit meromorphic solutions by the Kowalevski–Gambier method and a careful discussion. How we take into account the corresponding series at zeros, as opposed to the Laurent series at poles. This method is also useful for the study of many other non-linear differential equations.

Abstract:We report a new analytical method for exact solution of homogeneous linear ordinary differential equations with arbitrary order and variable coefficients. The method is based on the definition of jump transfer matrices and their extension into limiting differential form. The approach reduces the $n$th-order differential equation to a system of $n$ linear differential equations with unity order. The full analytical solution is then found by the perturbation technique. The important feature of the presented method is that it deals with the evolution of independent solutions, rather than its derivatives. We prove the validity of method by direct substitution of the solution in the original differential equation. We discuss the general properties of differential transfer matrices and present several analytical examples, showing the applicability of the method. We show that the Abel-Liouville-Ostogradski theorem can be easily recovered through this approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following elliptic system of Hamiltonian type on a bounded domain: { -Delta u = K-1(|y|)|v|(p-1)v, in B-1(0), -Delta v = K-2(|y|)|u|(q-1)u, in B-1(0), (0.1) u = v = 0 on partial derivative B-1(0), where K-1(r) and K-2(r) are positive bounded functions, B-1(0) is the unit ball in R-N, (p, q) is a pair of positive numbers lying on the critical hyperbola: 1/p+1+ 1/q + 1 = N-2/N. We investigate the local uniqueness and the nondegeneracy of the bubbling solution for problem (0.1). Our proof is based on the local Pohozaev identities, blow-up analysis, and the properties of Greens function. Our results are quite different from single equation, which is mainly caused by the non -cooperative nonlinear terms and (p, q) lying on the critical hyperbola. We believe that the various new ideas and technique computations that we used in this paper would be very useful to deal with other related problems of Hamiltonian type with interact critical exponents. Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:Lamé's differential equation is a linear differential equation of the second order with a periodic coefficient involving the Jacobian elliptic function depending on the modulus , and two additional parameters and . This differential equation appears in several applications, for example, the motion of coupled particles in a periodic potential. Stability and existence of periodic solutions of Lamé's equations is determined by the value of its Hill discriminant . The Hill discriminant is compared to an explicitly known quantity including explicit error bounds. This result is derived from the observation that Lamé's equation with can be solved by hypergeometric functions because then the elliptic function reduces to the hyperbolic tangent function. A connection relation between hypergeometric functions then allows the approximation of the Hill discriminant by a simple expression. In particular, one obtains an asymptotic approximation of when the modulus tends to .

Abstract:In this paper, we present a semi-analytical approach to solving two-dimensional Volterra integral equations of the second kind which include weakly singular kernels. This approach is based on two-dimensional Laplace transform expansion method and on bivariate rational approximants. More specifically, the proposed approach consists in expanding the two-dimensional Laplace transform of the unknown function for large values and inverting it term by term in order to obtain a double convergent series expansion of the solution. Then, using a few coefficients from the obtained convergent series expansion, we provide the bivariate rational function representation of the unknown function of these integral equations through the application of bivariate homogeneous Padé approximants. Furthermore, several numerical examples have been provided in order to show the efficiency of our study.
