Abstract:Photoelastic modulators are optical devices with a broad range of applications. These devices typically utilize a transverse interaction mechanism between acoustic and optical waves, resulting in a fundamental trade-off between the input aperture and the modulation frequency. Commercially available modulators with centimeter square apertures have operating frequencies in the vicinity of 50 kHz. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a birefringence-free photoelastic modulator operating at approximately 2.7 MHz with a centimeter square aperture, increasing the operating frequency substantially compared to existing approaches. Using the modulator and polarizers, we demonstrate close to $\pi$ radians polarization modulation amplitude with sub-watt drive power, translating to nearly 100% intensity modulation efficiency at the fundamental (2.7 MHz) and second harmonic (5.4 MHz) frequencies.

Abstract:Abstract Intensity modulators are an essential component in optics for controlling free-space beams. Many applications require the intensity of a free-space beam to be modulated at a single frequency, including wide-field lock-in detection for sensitive measurements, mode-locking in lasers, and phase-shift time-of-flight imaging (LiDAR). Here, we report a new type of single frequency intensity modulator that we refer to as a longitudinal piezoelectric resonant photoelastic modulator. The modulator consists of a thin lithium niobate wafer coated with transparent surface electrodes. One of the fundamental acoustic modes of the modulator is excited through the surface electrodes, confining an acoustic standing wave to the electrode region. The modulator is placed between optical polarizers; light propagating through the modulator and polarizers is intensity modulated with a wide acceptance angle and record breaking modulation efficiency in the megahertz frequency regime. As an illustration of the potential of our approach, we show that the proposed modulator can be integrated with a standard image sensor to effectively convert it into a time-of-flight imaging system.

Optically isotropic longitudinal piezoelectric resonant photoelastic modulator for wide angle polarization modulation at megahertz frequencies

Abstract:Polarization modulators have a broad range of applications in optics. The acceptance angle of a free-space polarization modulator is crucial for many applications. Polarization modulators that can achieve a wide acceptance angle are constructed by attaching a piezoelectric transducer to an isotropic material, and utilize a resonant transverse interaction between light and acoustic waves. Since their demonstration in the 1960s, the design of these modulators has essentially remained the same with minor improvements in the following decades. In this work, we show that a suitable single crystal with the correct crystal orientation, functioning as both the piezoelectric transducer and the acousto-optic interaction medium, could be used for constructing a highly efficient free-space resonant polarization modulator operating at megahertz frequencies and exhibiting a wide acceptance angle. We construct the modulator using gallium arsenide, an optically isotropic and piezoelectric crystal, and demonstrate polarization modulation at 6 MHz with an input aperture of 1 cm in diameter, acceptance angle reaching $\pm30^\circ$, and modulation efficiency exceeding 50%. Compared to state-of-the-art resonant photoelastic modulators, the modulator reported in this work exhibits greater than 50 fold improvement in modulation frequency for the same input aperture, while simultaneously reducing the thickness by approximately a factor of 80. Increasing the modulation frequency of photoelastic modulators from the kilohertz to the megahertz regime and substantially reducing their thickness lead to significant performance improvements for various use cases. This technological advancement also creates opportunities for utilizing these devices in new applications.

Abstract:The capability to modulate the intensity of an optical beam has scientific and practical significance. In this work, we demonstrate Y-Z cut lithium niobate acousto-optic modulators with record-high modulation efficiency, requiring only $1.5~\text{W}/\text{cm}^2$ for 100% modulation at 7 MHz. These modulators use a simple fabrication process; coating the top and bottom surfaces of a thin lithium niobate wafer with transparent electrodes. The fundamental shear acoustic mode of the wafer is excited through the transparent electrodes by applying voltage with frequency corresponding to the resonant frequency of this mode, confining an acoustic standing wave to the electrode region. Polarization of light propagating through this region is modulated at the applied frequency. Polarization modulation is converted to intensity modulation by placing the modulator between polarizers. To showcase an important application space for this modulator, we integrate it with a standard image sensor and demonstrate 4 megapixel time-of-flight imaging

Abstract:An all-optical modulator based on long range surface plasmon resonance with respect to Kerr effect induced refractive index changes is proposed and numerically investigated. The photosensitivity of the Kerr-polymer induces the variation of refractive index under illumination of pump light with different intensity. Long range surface plasmon resonance excited by an attenuated total internal reflection structure is utilized in the design for its high sensitivity to refractive index. For the structure with optimal parameters, the modulator is able to vary the reflectance from 0.04 to 0.74 by applying a pump light as low as 0.44GW/cm2.

Abstract:Numerous applications in quantum and classical optics require scalable, high-speed modulators that cover visible-NIR wavelengths with low footprint, drive voltage (V) and power dissipation. A critical figure of merit for electro-optic (EO) modulators is the transmission change per voltage, dT/dV. Conventional approaches in wave-guided modulators seek to maximize dT/dV by the selection of a high EO coefficient or a longer light-material interaction, but are ultimately limited by nonlinear material properties and material losses, respectively. Optical and RF resonances can improve dT/dV, but introduce added challenges in terms of speed and spectral tuning, especially for high-Q photonic cavity resonances. Here, we introduce a cavity-based EO modulator to solve both trade-offs in a piezo-strained photonic crystal cavity. Our approach concentrates the displacement of a piezo-electric actuator of length L and a given piezoelectric coefficient into the PhCC, resulting in dT/dV proportional to L under fixed material loss. Secondly, we employ a material deformation that is programmable under a "read-write" protocol with a continuous, repeatable tuning range of 5 GHz and a maximum non-volatile excursion of 8 GHz. In telecom-band demonstrations, we measure a fundamental mode linewidth = 5.4 GHz, with voltage response 177 MHz/V corresponding to 40 GHz for voltage spanning -120 to 120 V, 3dB-modulation bandwidth of 3.2 MHz broadband DC-AC, and 142 MHz for resonant operation near 2.8 GHz operation, optical extinction down to min(log(T)) = -25 dB via Michelson-type interference, and an energy consumption down to 0.17 nW/GHz. The strain-enhancement methods presented here are applicable to study and control other strain-sensitive systems.

Abstract:In this letter, an ultracompact silicon-based Mach-Zehnder amplitude modulator is proposed. The modulator is realized by infiltrating electrooptic polymers into horizontal photonic crystal slotted slab (HPCSS) waveguides. The optical mode in the phase modulation arms is strongly constrained horizontally by the photonic crystal band gap and vertically by the horizontal slotted slab. The band diagram and group velocity dispersion of the linear defect waveguide in the HPCSS are analyzed. A V ?? ??L product of 1.4 mV??cm and a bandwidth of over 83 GHz can be obtained.

Abstract:A new nanocavity-based electrooptic modulator on silicon-on-insulator is proposed. This nanocavity is formed by a one-dimensional photonic crystal nanobeam cavity with a slot embedded. The slot lies in both the cavity and the distributed Bragg reflectors region. This results in an ultrasmall modal volume of 0.047 (λ/n)3 and a high Q-factor of 8.6×104. Another advantage of the structure is that polymers can be infiltrated into the slot. Accordingly, we rely on the fast and strong electrooptic effect of polymers, rather than on the free-carrier plasma dispersion effect of silicon. Analysis shows a modulator with a bandwidth of 86 GHz, a switching voltage of 0.2 V, and a length of only 14 μm can be obtained.
Miniaturized Low-power Electro-optic Modulator Based on Silicon Integrated Nanophotonics and Organic Polymers

Abstract:We design and demonstrate a compact, low-power, low-dispersion and broadband optical modulator based on electro-optic (EO) polymer refilled silicon slot photonic crystal waveguide (PCW). The EO polymer is engineered for large EO activity and near-infrared transparency. The half-wave switching-voltage is measured to be V{\pi}=0.97V over optical spectrum range of 8nm, corresponding to a record-high effective in-device r33 of 1190pm/V and V{\pi} L of 0.291Vmm in a push-pull configuration. Excluding the slow-light effect, we estimate the EO polymer is poled with an ultra-high efficiency of 89pm/V in the slot. In addition, to achieve high-speed modulation, silicon PCW is selectively doped to reduce RC time delay. The 3-dB RF bandwidth of the modulator is measured to be 11GHz, and a modulation response up to 40GHz is observed.

Abstract:Phase modulators are commonly used devices in optics. Free-space phase modulators are typically constructed from optically anisotropic crystals exhibiting the Pockels effect. To preserve the light's polarization state as it propagates through the crystal, it is essential to align the polarization and the angle of incidence of the light with respect to the crystal. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of constructing free-space resonant phase modulators with a broad acceptance angle and minimal dependence on the polarization state of light using an acousto-optic approach. These modulators operate in the megahertz frequency range, require modest power levels, have aperture sizes exceeding 1 cm<sup>2</sup>, and feature sub-millimeter thickness.

Abstract:We describe two Si based optical-electric modulators based on photonic crystals (PC), which are capable of monolithically integrated with Si photonic integrated circuits. One is a modulator based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), the other is a modulator based on photonic band gap. These devices may enable the deployment of ultra-compact (-200 μm) devices with high extinction ration and low insertion loss.

Abstract:Using polarization-resolved transient reflection spectroscopy, we investigate the ultrafast modulation of light interacting with a metasurface consisting of coherently vibrating nanophotonic meta-atoms in the form of U-shaped split-ring resonators, that exhibit co-localized optical and mechanical resonances. With a two-dimensional square-lattice array of these resonators formed of gold on a glass substrate, we monitor the visible-pump-pulse induced gigahertz oscillations in intensity of reflected linearly-polarized infrared probe light pulses, modulated by the resonators effectively acting as miniature tuning forks. A multimodal vibrational response involving the opening and closing motion of the split rings is detected in this way. Numerical simulations of the associated transient deformations and strain fields elucidate the complex nanomechanical dynamics contributing to the ultrafast optical modulation, and point to the role of acousto-plasmonic interactions through the opening and closing motion of the SRR gaps as the dominant effect. Applications include ultrafast acoustooptic modulator design and sensing.

CMOS-fabricated ultraviolet light modulators using low-loss alumina piezo-optomechanical photonic circuits

Abstract:We demonstrate a CMOS-foundry-fabricated piezo-optomechanical photonic integrated circuit platform for ultraviolet and blue wavelengths, using alumina waveguides that are strongly mechanically coupled to monolithically integrated aluminum nitride piezoelectric actuators. Low waveguide losses are measured down to at least 320 nm, where we achieve 1.6 dB/cm. This allows us to demonstrate broadband amplitude modulators based on piezoelectrically actuated MEMS cantilever phase-shifters down to 320 nm, with a high extinction ratio of 30 dB. We further demonstrate the versatility of the platform by designing and demonstrating a modulator that can work with high extinction and low loss at 320 nm and 420 nm, simultaneously, demonstrating control of multiple, disparate wavelengths in one device. We also demonstrate narrow-band resonant racetrack modulators with quality factors of 4.7E5 and a tuning rate of 27.5 MHz/V. These results should open doors for a range of novel applications in UV photonics, quantum science, sensing and spectroscopy.

Abstract:Waveguide-based interferometric circuits are widely employed in optical communications, sensing and computing applications. In particular, glass-based devices are appealing due to the transparency and bio-compatibility of this substrate, or where low-loss interfacing with fiber networks is required. However, fast electro-optic phase modulation is hard to achieve in glass materials. Here, we demonstrate an optical phase and intensity modulator in glass, working in the megahertz range. This modulator exploits the elasto-optic effect inside a mechanical microstructure, brought to oscillation at resonance, and is entirely realized by femtosecond laser micromachining. In detail, we demonstrate 23-dB optical intensity modulation at 1.17 MHz, with an internal optical loss of the phase-modulator component as low as 0.04 dB.

Abstract:Miniaturization of devices has been a primary objective in microelectronics and photonics for decades, aiming at denser integration, enhanced functionalities and drastic reduction of power consumption. Headway in nanophotonics is currently linked to the progress in concepts and technologies necessary for applications in information and communication, brain inspired computing, medicine and sensing and quantum information. Amongst all nanostructures, semiconductor photonic crystals (PhCs) occupy a prominent position as they enable the fabrication of quasi ultimate optical cavities. Low threshold laser diodes or Raman lasers , low power consuming optical memories , efficient single photon sources or single photon quantum gates are impressive examples of their capabilities. We report the demonstration of about 20 micron long PhC semiconductor optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at telecom wavelength exploiting nearly diffraction limited optical modes. The pump power threshold is measured below 0.2 mW. Parametric oscillation was reached through the drastic enhancement of Kerr optical Four Wave Mixing by thermally tuning the high Q modes of a nanocavity into a triply resonant configuration. Miniaturization of this paradigmatic source of coherent light paves the way for quantum optical circuits, dense integration of highly efficient nonlinear sources of squeezed light or entangled photons pairs.

Abstract:Integrated electro-optic (EO) modulators are fundamental photonics components with utility in domains ranging from digital communications to quantum information processing. At telecommunication wavelengths, thin-film lithium niobate modulators exhibit state-of-the-art performance in voltage-length product ( V π L ), optical loss, and EO bandwidth. However, applications in optical imaging, optogenetics, and quantum science generally require devices operating in the visible-to-near-infrared (VNIR) wavelength range. Here, we realize VNIR amplitude and phase modulators featuring V π L 's of sub-1 V ⋅ cm, low optical loss, and high bandwidth EO response. Our Mach-Zehnder modulators exhibit a V π L as low as 0.55 V ⋅ cm at 738 nm, on-chip optical loss of ~0.7 dB/cm, and EO bandwidths in excess of 35 GHz. Furthermore, we highlight the opportunities these high-performance modulators offer by demonstrating integrated EO frequency combs operating at VNIR wavelengths, with over 50 lines and tunable spacing, and frequency shifting of pulsed light beyond its intrinsic bandwidth (up to 7x Fourier limit) by an EO shearing method.

Abstract:We present extended capabilities in simple liquid crystal-based devices that are applicable to adaptive optics and other related fields requiring wavefront manipulation. The laser-written devices can provide complex phase profiles, but are extremely simple to operate, requiring only a single electrode pair tuned between 0 and 10 V RMS. Furthermore, the devices operate in the transmissive mode for easy integration into the optical path. We present here as examples three such devices: the first device reproduces the defocus Zernike polynomial; the second device reproduces a seventh-order Zernike polynomial, tertiary coma; and the last example is of a primary spherical aberration. All devices offer wavelength-scale wavefront manipulation up to more than 2π radians peak-to-peak phase at a wavelength of 660 nm. The coma correction device is significantly more complex, reproducing a mode two orders higher than previous demonstrations, while the spherical device is nearly a full order of magnitude larger, measuring 2 mm in diameter.

Abstract:Spatial terahertz wave modulators that can arbitrarily tailor the electromagnetic wavefront are in high demand in nondestructive inspections and high-capacity wireless communications. Here, we propose a liquid crystal integrated metadevice. It modulates the terahertz wave based on the adjustable electromagnetically induced transparency analog when spatially changing the environmental refractive index. The functions of the device can be arbitrarily programmed via photo-reorienting the directors of liquid crystals with a digital micromirror device-based exposing system. The thin liquid crystal layer can be further driven by an electric field, and thus the function can be rapidly switched. Amplitude modulation and the lens effect are demonstrated with modulation depths over 50% at 0.94 THz.

Abstract:Advancements in light modulator technology have been driving discoveries and progress across various fields. The problem of large-scale coherent optical control of atomic quantum systems-including cold atoms, ions, and solid-state color centers-presents among the most stringent requirements. This motivates a new generation of high-speed large-scale modulator technology with the following requirements: (R1) operation at a design wavelength of choice in the visible (VIS) to near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, (R2) a scalable technology with a high channel density (> 100mm-2 ), (R3) a high modulation speed (> 100MHz), and (R4) a high extinction ratio (> 20 dB). To fulfill these requirements, we introduce a modulator technology based on piezoelectrically actuated silicon nitride resonant waveguide gratings fabricated on 200mm diameter silicon wafers with CMOS compatible processes. We present a proof-of-concept device with 4 x 4 individually addressable 50 {mu}m x 50 {mu}m pixels or channels, each containing a resonant waveguide grating with a ~ 780 nm design wavelength, supporting > 100MHz modulation speeds, and a spectral response with > 20 dB extinction.
