Abstract:We report a comparative analysis and theoretical description of the superconducting properties of two spin-valve-valve structures containing the Heusler alloy Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al$_{y}$ as one of two ferromagnetic (F1 or F2) layers of the F1/F2/S structure, where S stands for the superconducting Pb layer. In our experiments we used the Heusler alloy layer in two roles: as a weak ferromagnet on the place of the F2 layer and as a half-metal on the place of the F1 layer. In the first case, we obtained a large ordinary superconducting spin-valve effect $\Delta T_c$ assisted by the triplet superconducting spin-valve effect $\Delta T_c^{trip}$. In the second case, we observed a giant magnitude of $\Delta T_c^{trip}$ reaching 0.5 K. An underlying theory based on the solution of the Usadel equations using Kupriyanov-Lukichev boundary conditions with arbitrary material parameters for all layers and arbitrary boundary parameters for all interfaces is presented in Appendix. We find a good agreement between our experimental data and theoretical results.

Abstract:Background:Analyses of longitudinal health-related quality of life data often exclude participants who die, which limits the generalizability of the results. Methods to incorporate death as a valid score in the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form (SF-36) have been suggested but need to be evaluated in other populations. Objectives:We sought to apply a method of transforming the SF-36 Physical Component Score (PCS) to include death. A transformation to estimate the probability of being “healthy” in 3 years, based on the current PCS value, will be developed and validated. Subjects:Women in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH), ages 70–75 years at Survey 1 in 1996 (n = 12,432), were followed-up at 3 yearly intervals for 6 years. Results:The transformation derived from the ALSWH data provides evidence that the methodology for transforming the PCS to account for deaths is sound. The 3-year equation provided good estimates of the probability of being healthy in 3 years and the method allowed deaths to be included in an analysis of changes in health over time. Conclusions:For longitudinal studies involving the SF-36 in which subjects have died, we support the recommendation that both the PCS and its transformed value which includes deaths should be analyzed to examine the influence of deaths on the study conclusions. Using study data to derive empirical parameters for the transformations may be appropriate for studies with follow-up intervals of other lengths.

Abstract:We report the superconducting properties of the Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al$_y$/Cu/Ni/Cu/Pb spin-valve structure which magnetic part comprises the Heusler alloy layer HA = Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al$_y$ with a high degree of spin polarization (DSP) of the conduction band and the Ni layer of variable thickness. We obtained that the separation between the superconducting transition curves measured for the parallel ($\alpha = 0^\circ$) and perpendicular ($\alpha = 90^\circ$) orientation of the magnetizations of the HA and Ni layers reaches up to 0.5 K ($\alpha$ is an angle between the magnetization of two ferromagnetic layers). For all studied samples the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ on $\alpha$ demonstrates a deep minimum in the vicinity of the perpendicular configuration of magnetizations. This suggests that the observed minimum and the corresponding full switching effect of the spin valve is caused by the long-range triplet component of the superconducting condensate in the multilayer. Such a large effect can be attributed to a half-metallic nature of the HA layer which in the orthogonal configuration efficiently draws off the spin-polarized Cooper pairs from the space between the HA and Ni layers. Our results indicate a significant potential of the concept of the superconducting spin-valve multilayer comprising a half-metallic ferromagnet recently proposed by A. Singh et al., Phys. Rev. X 5, 021019 (2015) in achieving large values of the switching effect.

Abstract:We have embarked on studying magneto-transport response of organic spin-valves made of evaporated Alq3 spacer sandwiched between two ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes with spin-injecting capability. Recently, we have fabricated and completed studies on organic spin-valve devices using half-metallic manganites as one of the spin-injecting FM electrode, which have shown giant magnetoresistance (GMR) of up to 40% at 11K. Also we found that the GMR response decreases at higher temperatures, and actually disappears at temperatures above ∼180K, partially because the FM manganite loses its magnetic properties at ambient temperature. In order to realize room temperature organic spin-valve devices, we have begun studying spin-valve devices where both spin-injecting FM electrodes have high Curie temperatures, and thus maintain their magnetic properties at ambient temperature. In this paper we report our preliminary investigations of Fe/Alq3/Co spin-valves, where both electrodes are regular, d-band metallic FM's. We found that these devices show GMR with maximum of about 5% at 11K. However, at elevated temperatures the GMR value steeply decreases, and in fact vanishes at 90K. We attribute this decrease to the increase of the spin-lattice relaxation rate of the injected spin-1/2 carriers in the Alq3 spacer at elevated temperatures, where there is also change in the spin carrier injection mechanism at the Fe/Alq3 interface.

Abstract:The superconducting properties of a Co/Pb/Co heterostructure with thin insulating spacers, which are oxidized superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces, have been studied. The behavior of the critical transition temperature T c of the heterostructure to a superconducting state at a change in the relative orientation of the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic layers from antiparallel to parallel (the so-called superconducting spin valve effect) has been examined. This effect is usually most pronounced in the case of a perfect metal contact at superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces. In this work, a significant superconducting spin valve effect is observed in structures with worsened superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces. A change in the relative orientation of the magnetizations of two ferromagnetic Co layers from antiparallel to parallel leads to the change in T c by 0.2 K at the optimal thickness of the superconducting Pb layer. Our studies verify the still unconfirmed results obtained in [G. Deutscher and F. Meunier, Phys. Rev. Lett. 22 , 395 (1969)] and open new interesting possibilities for improving the parameters of the superconducting spin valve.

Abstract:To increase the efficiency of the superconducting spin valve (SSV), special attention should be paid to the choice of ferromagnetic materials for the F1/F2/S SSV multilayer. Here, we report the preparation and the superconducting properties of the SSV heterostructures where Pb is used as the superconducting S layer. In the magnetic part of the structure, we use the same starting material, the Heusler alloy Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al$_{y}$, for both F1 and F2 layers. We utilize the tunability of the magnetic properties of this alloy, which, depending on the deposition conditions, forms either an almost fully spin-polarized half-metallic F1 layer or a weakly ferromagnetic F2 layer. We demonstrate that the combination of the distinct properties of these two layers boosts the generation of the long-range triplet component of the superconducting condensate in the fabricated SSV structures and yields superior values of the triplet spin-valve effect of more than 1 K and of the operational temperature window of the SSV up to 0.6 K.

Abstract:Spintronic devices are regarded as prime candidates for addressing the demands of emergent applications such as in-memory computing and the Internet of Things, characterized by requirements for high speed, low energy consumption, and elevated storage density. Among these, spin valves, serving as fundamental structures of magnetic random-access memory, have garnered substantial attention in recent years. This study introduces an all van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure composed of Fe3GeTe2 (FGT)/tellurene/FGT, wherein a thin layer of Weyl semiconductor Te is interposed between two ferromagnetic FGT layers. The proposed configuration exhibits a characteristic spin valve effect at temperatures below 160 K. This effect is attributed to spin-dependent transport and spin-dependent scattering phenomena occurring at the interfaces of the constituent materials. Furthermore, as temperature decreases, the magnetoresistance ratio (MR) of the device increases, indicative of the heightened polarization ratio of FGT, with an MR of 0.43% achievable as the temperature approaches 5 K. This investigation elucidates the underlying operational mechanisms of two-dimensional spin valve devices and lays the groundwork for the realization of spin-based integrated circuits.
Valley- and spin-switch effects in molybdenum disulfide superconducting spin valve

Abstract:We propose a hole-doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) superconducting spin valve (F/S/F) hybrid structure in which the Andreev reflection process is suppressed for all incoming waves with a determined range of the chemical potential in ferromagnetic (F) region and the cross-conductance in the right F region depends crucially on the configuration of magnetizations in the two F regions. Using the scattering formalism, we find that the transport is mediated purely by elastic electron cotunneling (CT) process in a parallel configuration and changes to the pure crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) process in the low-energy regime, without fixing of a unique parameter, by reversing the direction of magnetization in the right F region. This suggests both valley- and spin-switch effects between the perfect elastic CT and perfect CAR processes and makes the nonlocal charge current to be fully valley- and spin-polarized inside the right F region where the type of the polarizations can be changed by reversing the magnetization direction in the right F region. We further demonstrate that the presence of the strong spin-orbit interaction $\lambda$ and an additional topological term ($\beta$) in the Hamiltonian of MoS$_2$ result in an enhancement of the charge conductance of the CT and CAR processes and make them to be present for long lengths of the superconducting region. Besides, we find that the thermal conductance of the structure with a small length of the highly doped superconducting region exhibits linear dependence on the temperature at low temperatures whereas it enhances exponentially at higher temperatures. In particular, we demonstrate that the thermal conductance versus the strength of the exchange field ($h$) in F region displays a maximum value at $h<\lambda$, which moves towards larger exchange fields by increasing the temperature.

Abstract:Superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) spin valve effect theories based on the S/F proximity phenomenon assume that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of F1/F2/S or F1/S/F2 trilayers for parallel magnetizations of the F1- and F2-layers (TcP) are smaller than for the antiparallel orientations (TcAP). Here, we report for CoOx/Fe1/Cu/Fe2/In multilayered systems with varying Fe2-layer thickness the sign-changing oscillating behavior of the spin valve effect \Delta Tc=TcAP-TcP. Our measurements revealed the full direct spin valve effect with TcAP>TcP for Fe2-layer thickness dFe2<1 nm and the full inverse (TcAP<TcAP) spin valve effect for dFe2>=1 nm. Interference of Cooper pair wave functions reflected from both surfaces of the Fe2-layer appear as the most probable reason for the observed behavior of \Delta Tc.

Abstract:Ferromagnet/Superconductor/Ferromagnet (F/S/F) trilayers constitute the core of a superconducting spin valve. The switching effect of the spin valve is based on interference phenomena occurring due to the proximity effect at the S/F interfaces. A remarkable effect is only expected if the core structure exhibits strong critical temperature oscillations, or most favorable, reentrant superconductivity, when the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is increased. The core structure has to be grown on an antiferromagnetic oxide layer (or such layer to be placed on top) to pin by exchange bias the magnetization-orientation of one of the ferromagnetic layers. In the present paper we demonstrate that this is possible, keeping the superconducting behavior of the core structure undisturbed.

Abstract:We have studied the proximity effect in an SF1S1F2s superconducting spin valve consisting of a massive superconducting electrode (S) and a multilayer structure formed by thin ferromagnetic (F1,2) and superconducting (S1, s) layers. Within the framework of the Usadel equations, we have shown that changing the mutual orientation of the magnetization vectors of the F1,2 layers from parallel to antiparallel serves to trigger superconductivity in the outer thin s-film. We studied the changes in the pair potential in the outer s-film and found the regions of parameters with a significant spin-valve effect. The strongest effect occurs in the region of parameters where the pair-potential sign is changed in the parallel state. This feature reveals new ways to design devices with highly tunable inductance and critical current.

Abstract:Superconductor/ferromagnet proximity effect has been studied for Pb/Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al bilayers. Different substrate temperatures allowed us to prepare the Heusler alloy Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al films with different degree of spin polarization of conduction band of the Heusler layer. We obtain a strong correlation between the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on the Pb-layer thickness at fixed thickness of the Heusler layer and the degree of spin polarization in the ferromagnetic layer.

[Spectroscopy studies on the interaction of bis(p-nitrophenyl) esters and beta-cyclodextrin].

Abstract:The bis(p-nitrophenyl) esters of succinic acid, adipic acid and sebacic acid have been synthesized, respectively, by employing 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as a dehydration agent. The composition and structure of the esters have been characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR and DSC. Furthermore, the host-guest interactions of the esters with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) have been studied systematically by using fluorescence quenching, fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements. It was demonstrated that the chain of the esters was longer, the interactions was weaker between the esters and the beta-CD. Both p-nitrophenyl groups in bis(p-nitrophenyl) esters of succinic acid can enter the inner cavity of beta-CD. In contrast, only one of the groups in bis(p-nitrophenyl) esters of adipic acid can enter the cavity. For bis(p-nitrophenyl) esters of sebacic acid, however, both groups can not enter the cavity of the beta-CD. The difference in the host-guest interactions of the three esters with beta-CD has been attributed to the difference in the conformations adopted by the esters. Based upon these observations, it is proposed that the esters with short linker may be more suitable for construction of new networks, which are based upon, in concept, host-guest interactions.

Abstract:Interlayer stray field coupling in hybrid perpendicular/Cu/in-plane magnetic anisotropy [Pd/Co]/Cu/Co single spin valves and [Pd/Co]/Cu/Co/Cu/[Co/Pd] dual spin valves was investigated. Enhancements of Co layer coercivity were observed after ac or dc demagnetization of the samples. This effect originates from the pinning of Co domain walls by the in-plane stray field from Co/Pd stripe domains, and the enhancements are more efficient as the Co/Pd domain size decreases. Moreover, the magnetostatic interaction between the net in-plane Co/Pd remanent moments and the Co moments leads to exchange bias in the Co layer of the dual spin valve after the dc demagnetization.

Abstract:A perpendicularly exchange-coupled composite structure, which consists of a [Co/Ni]N multilayer and a ferrimagnetic TbCo layer, displays specific features when it is utilized as a reference layer in spin valves. By slightly increasing the TbCo thickness, the coercivity of the coupled structure greatly increases, thereby giving an effective way to widen the difference in switching fields for the free and reference layers, and making it possible to manipulate magnetizations parallel or antiparallel for a wide range of fields. Such composite reference layer cannot only maintain a high perpendicular giant magnetoresistive (GMR) ratio, but it also minimizes the field offset in the minor GMR curves due to the negligible stray field generated by the antiferromagnetically aligned moments in the reference layer.

Abstract:In a superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid, a magnetically controlled singlet-to-triplet Cooper pair conversion can modulate the superconducting critical temperature. In these triplet superconducting spin valves, such control usually requires inhomogeneous magnetism. However, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling from an interfacial heavy-metal layer, the singlet/triplet conversion rate and thus the critical temperature, can be controlled via the magnetization direction of a single homogeneous ferromagnet. Here, we report significantly enhanced controllable pair conversion to a triplet state in a Nb/Pt/Co/Pt superconducting spin valve in which Pt/Co/Pt is homogeneously magnetized and proximity-coupled to a superconducting layer of Nb. The Co/Pt interface furthest away from Nb is modified by a sub-nanometer-thick layer of Cu or Au. We argue that the enhancement is most likely associated from an improvement of the Co/Pt interface due to the insertion of Cu and Au layers. Additionally, the higher normalized orbital moments in Au measured using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows that increasing spin-orbit coupling enhances the triplet proximity effect - an observation supported by our theoretical calculations. Our results provide a pathway to enhancing triplet pair creation by interface engineering for device development in superspintronics.
