Abstract:A compact radiating structure equivalent to a magnetic dipole has been designed and measured. Radiation is horizontally polarised, omni-directional, with a low cross polarisation level. In this work, several techniques of miniaturisation have been used in order to achieve a 0.3 λ0 squared planar antenna with a 8.7% bandwidth.

Abstract:This paper features two studies confirming a lasting impact of first learning on how subsequent experience is weighted in early relevance-filtering processes. In both studies participants were exposed to sequences of sound that contained a regular pattern on two different timescales. Regular patterning in sound is readily detected by the auditory system and used to form "prediction models" that define the most likely properties of sound to be encountered in a given context. The presence and strength of these prediction models is inferred from changes in automatically elicited components of auditory evoked potentials. Both studies employed sound sequences that contained both a local and longer-term pattern. The local pattern was defined by a regular repeating pure tone occasionally interrupted by a rare deviating tone (p=0.125) that was physically different (a 30msvs. 60ms duration difference in one condition and a 1000Hz vs. 1500Hz frequency difference in the other). The longer-term pattern was defined by the rate at which the two tones alternated probabilities (i.e., the tone that was first rare became common and the tone that was first common became rare). There was no task related to the tones and participants were asked to ignore them while focussing attention on a movie with subtitles. Auditory-evoked potentials revealed long lasting modulatory influences based on whether the tone was initially encountered as rare and unpredictable or common and predictable. The results are interpreted as evidence that probability (or indeed predictability) assigns a differential information-value to the two tones that in turn affects the extent to which prediction models are updated and imposed. These effects are exposed for both common and rare occurrences of the tones. The studies contribute to a body of work that reveals that probabilistic information is not faithfully represented in these early evoked potentials and instead exposes that predictability (or conversely uncertainty) may trigger value-based learning modulations even in task-irrelevant incidental learning.

Abstract:Aging is associated with decreased GH and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) levels and lean body mass, and increased body fat. Recombinant human GH treatment of old men partially reverses body composition changes. Administration of GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) to GH-deficient children and young adults increases GH and IGF-I levels while preserving physiological GH release. We investigated whether GHRH injections restore GH and IGF-I levels in old men to the levels in young men. Healthy young (n = 9; 26.2 +/- 4.1 yr; mean +/- SD) and old (n = 10; 68.0 +/- 6.2 yr) nonobese men underwent baseline blood sampling for measurements of IGF-I and 24-h profiles of GH release, followed by iv bolus GHRH stimulation tests. Old men then took, randomly, both low (0.5 mg) and high (1 mg) dose GHRH-(1-29) sc injections twice daily for 14 days, with an intervening 14-day nontreatment period. The study protocol was repeated on day 14 of each treatment. At baseline, the mean peak duration of spontaneous GH release (P less than 0.005) and IGF-I levels (P less than 0.0001) were lower in the old men. GHRH treatment evoked dose-related increases in all parameters, with significant differences (vs. old basal values) in mean 24-h GH (P less than 0.001), area under peaks (P less than 0.001), peak amplitude (P less than 0.05), and IGF-I (P less than 0.005) only at the high dose. After high dose treatment, there were no significant differences in these parameters between age groups. Peak and integrated responses to iv GHRH stimulation tests did not differ between young and old men either before or during GHRH treatment. Baseline serum levels of both testosterone (P less than 0.01) and phosphate (P less than 0.05) were lower in the older men. Phosphate levels increased (P less than 0.05) during GHRH treatment. GHRH treatment did not affect fasting glucose, urinary C-peptide, blood pressure, or chemistry and hematology profiles. Thus, short term sc administration of GHRH to healthy old men reverses age-related decreases in GH and IGF-I, suggesting that prolonged treatment could improve age-related alterations in body composition.
Language experience shapes predictive coding of rhythmic sound sequences

Abstract:Perceptual systems heavily rely on prior knowledge and predictions to make sense of the environment. Predictions can originate from multiple sources of information, including contextual short-term priors, based on isolated temporal situations, and context-independent long-term priors, arising from extended exposure to statistical regularities. While the effects of short-term predictions on auditory perception have been well-documented, how long-term predictions shape early auditory processing is poorly understood. To address this, we recorded magnetoencephalography data from native speakers of two languages with different word orders (Spanish: functor-initial versus Basque: functor-final) listening to simple sequences of binary sounds alternating in duration with occasional omissions. We hypothesized that, together with contextual transition probabilities, the auditory system uses the characteristic prosodic cues (duration) associated with the native language's word order as an internal model to generate long-term predictions about incoming non-linguistic sounds. Consistent with our hypothesis, we found that the amplitude of the mismatch negativity elicited by sound omissions varied orthogonally depending on the speaker's linguistic background and was most pronounced in the left auditory cortex. Importantly, listening to binary sounds alternating in pitch instead of duration did not yield group differences, confirming that the above results were driven by the hypothesized long-term duration prior. These findings show that experience with a given language can shape a fundamental aspect of human perception - the neural processing of rhythmic sounds - and provides direct evidence for a long-term predictive coding system in the auditory cortex that uses auditory schemes learned over a lifetime to process incoming sound sequences.

Distributional learning drives statistical suppression and deafening

Abstract:Humans and other animals use information about how likely it is for something to happen. The absolute and relative probability of an event influences a remarkable breadth of behaviors, from foraging for food to comprehending linguistic constructions -- even when these probabilities are learned implicitly. It is less clear how, and under what circumstances, statistical learning of simple probabilities might drive changes in perception and cognition. Here, across a series of 29 experiments, we probe listeners' sensitivity to task-irrelevant changes in the probability distribution of tones' acoustic frequency across tone-in-noise detection and tone duration decisions. We observe that the task-irrelevant frequency distribution influences the ability to detect a sound and the speed with which perceptual decisions are made. The shape of the probability distribution, its range, and a tone's relative position within that range impact observed patterns of suppression and enhancement of tone detection and decision making. Perceptual decisions are also modulated by a newly discovered perceptual bias, with lower frequencies in the distribution more often and more rapidly perceived as longer, and higher frequencies as shorter. Perception is sensitive to rapid distribution changes, but distributional learning from previous probability distributions also carries over. In fact, massed exposure to a single point along the dimension results in a sustained 'statistical deafening' along a range of subsequently encountered frequencies. This seemingly maladaptive loss of sensitivity - occurring entirely in the absence of feedback or reward - points to a gain mechanism that suppresses sensitivity to regions along a perceptual dimension that are less likely to be encountered.

Abstract:Auditory perception requires categorizing sound sequences, such as speech or music, into classes, such as syllables or notes. Auditory categorization depends not only on the acoustic waveform, but also on variability and uncertainty in how the listener perceives the sound - including sensory and stimulus uncertainty, the listener's estimated relevance of the particular sound to the task, and their ability to learn the past statistics of the acoustic environment. Whereas these factors have been studied in isolation, whether and how these factors interact to shape categorization remains unknown. Here, we measured human participants' performance on a multi-tone categorization task and modeled each participant's behavior using a Bayesian framework. Task-relevant tones contributed more to category choice than task-irrelevant tones, confirming that participants combined information about sensory features with task relevance. Conversely, participants' poor estimates of task-relevant tones or high-sensory uncertainty adversely impacted category choice. Learning the statistics of sound category over both short and long timescales also affected decisions, biasing the decisions toward the over-represented category. The magnitude of this effect correlated inversely with participants' relevance estimates. Our results demonstrate that individual participants idiosyncratically weigh sensory uncertainty, task relevance, and statistics over both short and long timescales, providing a novel understanding of and a computational framework for how sensory decisions are made under several simultaneous behavioral demands.

Concurrent encoding of sequence predictability and event-evoked prediction error in unfolding auditory patterns

Abstract:Human listeners possess an innate capacity to discern patterns within rapidly unfolding sensory input. Core questions, guiding ongoing research, focus on the mechanisms through which these representations are acquired and whether the brain prioritizes or suppresses predictable sensory signals. Previous work, using fast auditory sequences (tone-pips presented at a rate of 20Hz), revealed sustained response effects that appear to track the dynamic predictability of the sequence. Here we extend the investigation to slower sequences (4Hz), permitting the isolation of responses to individual tones. Stimuli were 50ms tone-pips, ordered into random (RND) and regular (REG; a repeating pattern of 10 frequencies) sequences; Two timing profiles were created: in ‘fast’ sequences tone-pips were presented in direct succession (20 Hz); in ‘slow’ sequences tone-pips were separated by a 200ms silent gap (4 Hz). Naive participants (N=22; both sexes) passively listened to these sequences, while brain responses were recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Results unveiled a heightened magnitude of sustained brain responses in REG when compared to RND patterns. This manifested from three tones after the onset of the pattern repetition, even in the context of slower sequences characterized by extended pattern durations (2500ms). This observation underscores the remarkable implicit sensitivity of the auditory brain to acoustic regularities. Importantly, brain responses evoked by single tones exhibited the opposite pattern - stronger responses to tones in RND compared to REG sequences. The demonstration of simultaneous but opposing sustained and evoked response effects reveals concurrent processes that shape the representation of unfolding auditory patterns. Significance Statement Humans excel at detecting predictable patterns within sound sequences, a process crucial for listening, language processing, and music appreciation. However, questions persist about the underlying neural mechanisms and the specific information monitored by the brain. Our study addresses these questions by analysing magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals from participants exposed to predictable and unpredictable tone-pip patterns. We found that the MEG signal simultaneously captures two crucial aspects of predictability tracking. Firstly, sustained MEG activity, tracking the sequence's evolution, dynamically assesses pattern predictability, shedding light on how the brain evaluates reliability. Secondly, phasic MEG activity, reflecting responses to individual events, shows reduced activity to predictable tones, aligning with the idea that the brain anticipates and efficiently encodes upcoming events in predictable contexts.

Surprising sounds influence risky decision making

Abstract:Adaptive behavior depends on appropriate responses to environmental uncertainty. Incidental sensory events might simply be distracting and increase errors, but alternatively can lead to stereotyped responses despite their irrelevance. To evaluate these possibilities, we test whether task-irrelevant sensory prediction errors influence risky decision making in humans across seven experiments (total n = 1600). Rare auditory sequences preceding option presentation systematically increase risk taking and decrease choice perseveration (i.e., increased tendency to switch away from previously chosen options). The risk-taking and perseveration effects are dissociable by manipulating auditory statistics: when rare sequences end on standard tones, including when rare sequences consist only of standard tones, participants are less likely to perseverate after rare sequences but not more likely to take risks. Computational modeling reveals that these effects cannot be explained by increased decision noise but can be explained by value-independent risky bias and perseveration parameters, decision biases previously linked to dopamine. Control experiments demonstrate that both surprise effects can be eliminated when tone sequences are presented in a balanced or fully predictable manner, and that surprise effects cannot be explained by erroneous beliefs. These findings suggest that incidental sounds may influence many of the decisions we make in daily life.
Cue Predictiveness and Uncertainty Determine Cue Representation During Visual Statistical Learning.

Abstract:This study investigated how humans process probabilistic-associated information when encountering varying levels of uncertainty during implicit visual statistical learning. A novel probabilistic cueing validation paradigm was developed to probe the representation of cues with high (75% probability), medium (50%), low (25%), or zero levels of predictiveness in response to preceding targets that appeared with high (75%), medium (50%), or low (25%) transitional probabilities (TPs). Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated a significant negative association between cue probe identification accuracy and cue predictiveness when these cues appeared after high-TP but not medium-TP or low-TP targets, establishing exploration-like cue processing triggered by lower-uncertainty rather than high-uncertainty inputs. Experiment 3 ruled out the confounding factor of probe repetition and extended this finding by demonstrating (1) enhanced representation of low-predictive and zero-predictive but not high-predictive cues across blocks after high-TP targets and (2) enhanced representation of high-predictive but not low-predictive and zero-predictive cues across blocks after low-TP targets for learners who exhibited above-chance awareness of cue-target transition. These results suggest that during implicit statistical learning, input characteristics alter cue-processing mechanisms, such that exploration-like and exploitation-like mechanisms are triggered by lower-uncertainty and higher-uncertainty cue-target sequences, respectively.
Statistical learning of incidental perceptual regularities induces sensory conditioned cortical responses

Abstract:Statistical learning of sensory patterns can lead to predictive neural processes enhancing stimulus perception and enabling fast deviancy detection. Predictive processes have been extensively demonstrated when environmental statistical regularities are relevant to task execution. Preliminary evidence indicates that statistical learning can even occur independently of task relevance and top-down attention, although the temporal profile and neural mechanisms underlying sensory predictions and error signals induced by statistical learning of incidental sensory regularities remain unclear. In our study, we adopted an implicit sensory conditioning paradigm that elicited the generation of specific perceptual priors in relation to task-irrelevant audio-visual associations, while recording Electroencephalography (EEG). Our results showed that learning of non-relevant but statistically interrelated neutral audio-visual stimuli resulted in early neural responses to predictive auditory stimuli conveying anticipatory signals of expected visual stimulus presence or absence, and in specific modulation of cortical responses to probabilistic visual stimulus presentation or omission. Pattern similarity analysis indicated that predictive auditory stimuli tended to resemble the response to expected visual stimulus presence or absence. Remarkably, Hierarchical Gaussian filter modeling estimating dynamic changes of prediction error signals in relation to differential probabilistic occurrences of audio-visual stimuli further demonstrated instantiation of predictive neural signals by showing distinct neural processing of prediction error in relation to violation of expected visual stimulus presence or absence. Overall, our findings indicated that statistical learning of non-salient and task-irrelevant perceptual regularities can induce the generation of neural priors at the time of predictive stimulus presentation, possibly conveying sensory-specific information of the predicted consecutive stimulus.

Sustained EEG responses to rapidly unfolding stochastic sounds reflect precision tracking

Abstract:The brain is increasingly viewed as a statistical learning machine, where our sensations and decisions arise from the intricate interplay between bottom-up sensory signals and constantly changing expectations regarding the surrounding world. Which statistics does the brain track while monitoring the rapid progression of sensory information? Here, by combining EEG (three experiments N≥22 each) and computational modelling, we examined how the brain processes rapid and stochastic sound sequences that simulate key aspects of dynamic sensory environments. Passively listening participants were exposed to structured tone-pip arrangements that contained transitions between a range of stochastic patterns. Predictions were guided by a Bayesian predictive inference model. We demonstrate that listeners automatically track the statistics of unfolding sounds, even when these are irrelevant to behaviour. Transitions between sequence patterns drove an increase of the sustained EEG response. This was observed to a range of distributional statistics, and even in situations where behavioural detection of these transitions was at floor. These observations suggest that the modulation of the EEG sustained response reflects a universal process of belief updating within the brain. By establishing a connection between the outputs of the computational model and the observed brain responses, we demonstrate that the dynamics of these transition-related responses align with the tracking of ‘precision’ – the confidence or reliability assigned to a predicted sensory signal - shedding light on the intricate interplay between the brain’s statistical tracking mechanisms and its response dynamics.

The impact of spatial variance on precision estimates in an auditory oddball paradigm

Abstract:Predictive processing theories suggest that a principal function of the brain is to reduce the surprise of incoming sensory information by creating accurate and precise models of the environment. These models are commonly explored by looking at the prediction errors elicited when experience departs from predictions. One such prediction error is the mismatch negativity (MMN). Using this component, it is possible to examine the effect of external noise on the precision of the developed model. Recent studies have shown that the brain may not update its model every time there is a change in the environment, rather it will only update it when doing so will increase precision and or accuracy of the model. The current study examined this process using oddball sound sequences with high and low spatial variability and examining how this affected the elicited MMN to a duration deviant sound. The results showed a strong null effect of spatial variance both at a local and sequence levels. These results indicate that variability in the sound sequence will not invariably affect model precision estimates and thus the amplitude of the MMN component.
Probing sensitivity to statistical structure in rapid sound sequences using deviant detection tasks

Abstract:Statistical structures and our ability to exploit them are a ubiquitous component of daily life. Yet, we still do not fully understand how we track these sophisticated statistics and the role they play in sensory processing. Predictive coding frameworks hypothesize that for stimuli that can be accurately anticipated based on prior experience, we rely more strongly on our internal model of the sensory world and are more “surprised” when that expectation is unmet. The current study used this phenomenon to probe listeners’ sensitivity to probabilistic structures generated using rapid 50 milli-second tone-pip sequences that precluded conscious prediction of upcoming stimuli. Over three experiments we measured listeners’ sensitivity and response time to deviants of a frequency outside the expected range. Predictable sequences were generated using either a triplet-based or community structure and deviance detection contrasted against the same set of tones but in a random, unpredictable order. All experiments found structured sequences enhanced deviant detection relative to random sequences. Additionally, Experiment 2 used three different instantiations of the community structure to demonstrate that the level of uncertainty in the structured sequences modulated deviant saliency. Finally, Experiment 3 placed the deviant within an established community or immediately after a transition between communities, where the perceptual boundary should generate momentary uncertainty. However, this manipulation did not impact performance. Together these results demonstrate that probabilistic contexts generated from statistical structures modulate the processing of an ongoing auditory signal, leading to an improved ability to detect unexpected deviant stimuli, consistent with the predictive coding framework.

Brain responses to predictable structure in auditory sequences: From complex regular patterns to tone repetition

Abstract:In classical studies of auditory pattern learning, neuronal responses exhibit repetition suppression, where sequences of repeated tones show a reduced evoked response. This may be due in part to adaptation, but is also hypothesized to indicate suppression of expected stimuli. Repetition suppression is thought to form a building block of regularity learning, and is the paradigmatic example of predictive coding in humans and other animals. However, stimuli with more complex patterns appear to show the opposite effect. Predictable regular (REG) patterns distributed over a range of frequencies show a strongly enhanced sustained brain response compared to frequency-matched random (RAND) sequences, sitting at odds with the usual reduced evoked responses to predictable stimuli. A limiting factor in reconciling these findings is that they are obtained using different stimuli and analysis methods. This human EEG study (N=20) brings together auditory sequence predictability and repetition in a single paradigm, based on rapidly unfolding tone pip patterns, incorporating sequences consisting of exactly repeating tones at a single frequency, alongside REG and RAND of varying complexity. We demonstrate that regularity is associated with increased sustained responses, offset responses, tone locked responses and cycle-locked responses. We further show that both repetition suppression and repetition enhancement occur over different timescales, and that sustained brain responses to simple repetition show qualitatively different effects than to more complex regularities during automatic tracking of stimulus statistics. Our results indicate a system for automatic monitoring of predictability in the auditory environment, which is distinct from, but concurrent with, repetition suppression.

Coherent noise enables probabilistic sequence replay in spiking neuronal networks

Abstract:Animals rely on different decision strategies when faced with ambiguous or uncertain cues. Depending on the context, decisions may be biased towards events that were most frequently experienced in the past, or be more explorative. A particular type of decision making central to cognition is sequential memory recall in response to ambiguous cues. A previously developed spiking neuronal network implementation of sequence prediction and recall learns complex, high-order sequences in an unsupervised manner by local, biologically inspired plasticity rules. In response to an ambiguous cue, the model deterministically recalls the sequence shown most frequently during training. Here, we present an extension of the model enabling a range of different decision strategies. In this model, explorative behavior is generated by supplying neurons with noise. As the model relies on population encoding, uncorrelated noise averages out, and the recall dynamics remain effectively deterministic. In the presence of locally correlated noise, the averaging effect is avoided without impairing the model performance, and without the need for large noise amplitudes. We investigate two forms of correlated noise occurring in nature: shared synaptic background inputs, and random locking of the stimulus to spatiotemporal oscillations in the network activity. Depending on the noise characteristics, the network adopts various replay strategies. This study thereby provides potential mechanisms explaining how the statistics of learned sequences affect decision making, and how decision strategies can be adjusted after learning.

Abstract:Noise is intuitively thought to interfere with perceptual learning; However, human and machine learning studies suggest that, in certain contexts, variability may reduce overfitting and improve generalizability. Whereas previous studies have examined the effects of variability in learned stimuli or tasks, it is hitherto unknown what are the effects of variability in the temporal environment. Here, we examined this question in two groups of adult participants ( N = 40) presented with visual targets at either random or fixed temporal routines and then tested on the same type of targets at a new nearly-fixed temporal routine. Findings reveal that participants of the random group performed better and adapted quicker following a change in the timing routine, relative to participants of the fixed group. Corroborated with eye-tracking and computational modeling, these findings suggest that prior exposure to temporal variability promotes the formation of new temporal expectations and enhances generalizability in a dynamic environment. We conclude that noise plays an important role in promoting perceptual learning in the temporal domain: rather than interfering with the formation of temporal expectations, noise enhances them. This counterintuitive effect is hypothesized to be achieved through eliminating overfitting and promoting generalizability.

Abstract:Networks are a useful mathematical tool for capturing the complexity of the world. In a previous behavioral study, we showed that human adults (N=23, 16 females) were sensitive to the high-level network structure underlying auditory sequences, even when presented with incomplete information. Their performance was best explained by a mathematical model compatible with associative learning principles, based on the integration of the transition probabilities between adjacent and non-adjacent elements with a memory decay. In the present study, we explored the neural correlates of this hypothesis via magnetoencephalography (MEG). Participants passively listened to sequences of tones organized in a sparse community network structure comprising two communities. An early difference (∼150 ms) was observed in the brain responses to tone transitions with similar transition probability but occurring either within or between communities. This result implies a rapid and automatic encoding of the sequence structure. Using time-resolved decoding, we estimated the duration and overlap of the representation of each tone. The decoding performance exhibited exponential decay, resulting in a significant overlap between the representations of successive tones. Based on this extended decay profile, we estimated a long-horizon associative learning novelty index for each transition and found a correlation of this measure with the MEG signal. Overall, our study sheds light on the neural mechanisms underlying human sensitivity to network structures and highlights the potential role of Hebbian-like mechanisms in supporting learning at various temporal scales. Significance statement We conducted a MEG study in which human adults were passively exposed to sequences of tones organized in a sparse community network structure. Despite the uniform transition probabilities between tones, participants’ brain activity exhibited sensitivity to the network structure. Notably, a consistent “deviant” response was observed at ∼150 ms when the sequence switched between communities. A long-tail exponential decay in tone representation allowed overlapping representations of successive sequence elements, facilitating long-range associative mechanisms. This binding mechanism adequately accounted for various scales of sequence learning, bridging the gap between statistical and network learning approaches.
