Abstract:We fabricate fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in microfibers (MFs) using focused ion beam milling technique. By periodically etching 100 nm-depth grooves on the surface of silica MFs with diameters less than 2 μm, evident grating features with transmission dip up to 15 dB are obtained. Because of the high-index contrast of the gratings structure, the length of the microfiber Bragg grating (MFBG) can be reduced to 500 μm level. Using a 518 μm-length 1.8 μm-diameter MFBG, we also demonstrate sensitivity up to 660 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) for refractive index (RI) sensing. The highly compact MFBGs demonstrated here may serve as low-dimensional building blocks for miniaturized photonic components and devices.

Abstract:We report a novel micro-fiber Bragg grating (mu FBG) sensor that takes advantage of the degeneracy of stop-band and rapid emergence of spectral modes when an effective phase shift occurs. The phase shift can be enabled by a range of perturbations in a central segment of the grating, including monolayer immobilization of bio-molecules or change in refractive index in the surrounding, thereby constituting the possibility of a highly sensitive sensor with the merit of scalable performance. The use of mu FBG ensures strong evanescent field coupling to the surrounding in order to maximize signal transduction. Simulation results indicate very favorable sensor signal characteristics such as large wavelength shift and sharp reflection dips. A general relation between the peak position within the stop-band and the amount of effective phase shift is also provided, and may generally serve as helpful guideline for FBG sensor design. A typical mu FBG sensor device may detect surface protein/DNA adsorption with limit-of-detection (LOD) as low as 3.3 pg.mm(-2) for surface mass density and 51.8 fg for total mass. Abstract:We investigate theoretically the characteristic of a tunable microwave fiber-optic notch filter based on two fiber gratings. The microwave frequency response based on the reflectivities of two fiber gratings is analyzed, and the optimum filter condition is obtained. The reflectivity of the first fiber grating can be tuned experimentally by adjusting the wavelength of input light. Experimental results are in agreement with the theory. The largest notch depth is more than 15dB. The free-spectral range can be tuned by altering the length of fiber between two fiber gratings.
A linear chirp fiber Bragg grating with tunable bandwidth enabled by MXene's photothermal effect

Abstract:An efficient method for tunable spectra of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) using a gradient temperature field is proposed theoretically and experimentally. The temperature field modulation in the core region of the FBG is achieved by utilizing the photothermal conversion properties of MXene Ti3C2Tx, which guarantees a flexible adjustment of temperature gradients in the FBG axis. The spectra of FBG under different gradients of temperature fields are simulated by the transfer matrix method. The simulation results show that the gradient temperature distribution in the FBG axis can induce spectral chirps of FBG. The increase in the bandwidth of the spectrum and the decrease in the reflection intensity are caused by the rise of the temperature gradient. In the experiments, Ti3C2Tx films are coated onto the sidewall of FBG, and the non-uniform temperature gradient field in the FBG axis is formed and tuned by varying the intensity and spatial distribution of the pump laser on the Ti3C2Tx film. The spectral bandwidth measured at 10 dB can be broadened by 4.6 times from 0.57 to 2.63 nm with excellent linear tunability as a function of the pump power. This method provides an effective scheme for the spectral tuning of linear chirp FBGs in all-optical control.

Abstract:A novel and simple chirp tuning device of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed, which possesses a C shape and consists of a straight beam and two half-round arches. A linear strain field is induced over the straight beam by applying stress on the arches. As a result, the uniform FBG bonded on the surface of the beam is converted to a linearly chirped fiber grating. The bandwidth of the FBG is tuned linearly by applied stress with the sensitivity up to 0.34 nm/N and a linearity of 0.9982. In the experiment, a chirp bandwidth of about 7 nm can be obtained with the stress of 20 N. Additionally, the reflective spectra are quite flat. The experimental results are in good agreement with the analyses. Due to the characteristic of the bandwidth immunity to environmental temperature variation and large tunable range of bandwidth, the device can be applied in fields such as measurement of stress (strain, curvature, etc.), fiber laser, chromatic dispersion compensation.

Abstract:A wide-tuning range linear cavity C+L band tunable fiber laser is proposed in this paper. By using 3-point bending device to facilitate wavelength tuning of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), a scheme with two parallel strain-tunable FBGs (TFBGs) is demonstrated in L band operation. A large tuning range of over 22.5nm with 0.1nm precise resolution for each TFBG is obtained. The overlapping tuning range for two TFBGs is from 1564 to 1600.5nm with 2dB power variation. Using 10M Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) and 100mW pumping power, the stable lasing output power is measured at 1582.0nm with threshold pump power and side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 10mW and 50dB, respectively. And the measured slope efficiency is 11.5% corresponding to quantum efficiency of 12.3%.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a wide range and a comb with continuous cladding mode resonances inscribed in non-photosensitive single mode fibers using a femtosecond laser and a phase mask. The FBG is inscribed in the core and cladding, exciting a series of cladding modes in transmission. The birefringence induced by this FBG structure offers significant polarization-dependence for cladding modes, thus allowing the vector fiber twist to be perceived. By measuring the peak-to-peak differential intensity of orthogonally polarized cladding mode resonances, the proposed sensor presents totally opposite intensity response in the anticlockwise direction for the torsion angle ranging from -45° to 45°. The cladding mode comb approximately covers wavelengths over the O-, E-, S-, and C-bands in transmission. The cutoff cladding mode of air can be observed in the spectrum. Thus, the sensible refractive index range is estimated to be from 1.00 to 1.44. Temperature responsivity of the grating is also characterized. The proposed device potentially provides new solutions to the various challenges of physical vector and bio-chemical parameters sensing.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) have great significance in the development of high-power fiber laser systems. Fabrication sources, fibers, and fabrication technology would affect the performance of FBGs directly. In this research, a scanning exposure method for fabricating FBGs in different types of photosensitive fibers with a 213nm solid-state laser source was proposed. The Q-switched Nd: YVO4 laser fifth harmonic source was compared with the traditional excimer lasers and the impacts of lengths, center wavelengths, titled angles, and apodization on the reflection and transmission spectra of FBGs were discussed. The scanning fabrication system, which can realize the tilting of phase mask and the adjustment and monitoring of tension, was built according to the characteristics that the output spot diameter of the fabrication source was sub-millimeter. While the high quality of fabrication was guaranteed, FBGs with lengths of 3mm~20mm, center wavelengths shift of 0nm~4.2nm, and tilted angles of 0~21 were obtained, and all the parameters were simultaneously adjusted and controlled, the deepest transmission loss of about -70dB. FBGs fabricated were of good stability and repeatability, especially in hydrogen fibers whose stability was independent of high-temperature annealing (1500C) which was different from the fabrication results of excimer laser sources. Then the unconformity between experimental results and theoretical simulation was discussed and the optimization schemes were proposed. The experimental results and analysis provided a better experimental scheme for UV laser fabricating FBGs and the experimental basis for further optimizing the fabrication technology and further analyzing the microscopic mechanism of optical fiber photosensitivity.
Sensitivity-Tunable FBG Interrogation System Utilizing a Mechanically Induced Long Period Fiber Grating

Abstract:A mechanically induced long-period fiber grating (MLPFG) scheme and a sensitivity tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation system is presented. The MLPFG is made by pressing a plate with periodic grooves (which were fabricated using mechanical line processing technology) against a short length of single mode fiber. The strength of that resonant band of MLPFG is altered by applying pressure to the fiber. A FBG whose center-wavelength is localized on the slope of a resonant band of a mechanical grating is chosen. By applying a pressure with a value from 20 N to 60 N on the MLPFG, the FBG is submitted to strain values of up to 3000 με, during which the Bragg wavelength and the respective transmitted peak power through the MLPFG are recorded. It is demonstrated that the sensitivity of this FBG interrogation system to strain variations increased from 0.802 nW/με to 1.204 nW/με.
Reflection Spectrum Characteristics of Bragg Fiber Bragg Grating

Abstract:Based on the coupled mode theory of fiber Bragg grating, OptiGrating software was used to simulate the main factors affecting the reflection spectrum of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and cascaded FBG, and the response characteristics of the reflection spectrum were obtained. The simulation results show that when the length of the grating increases, the center wavelength of the peak stays the same and the reflectance increases. When the grating period increases, the wavelength of the center of the peak shifts to the direction of the long wave, and the reflectance is basically unchanged. When the modulation of refractive index of grating increases, the center wavelength of wave peak remains unchanged and the reflectance increases. When the period difference of the cascaded gratings is large, the reflection spectrum of the cascaded FBG is the superposition of the reflection spectrum of the individual gratings. When the period difference of the gratings is close, there will be interference between the gratings.

Abstract:An improved design and fabrication method of nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings is demonstrated. Based on reconstruction-equivalent- chirp method, the nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg grating is realized with a linearly chirped phase mask instead of a uniform one, which improves the performance of the device. Coated with uniform thin metal film, the obtained grating works as a tunable dispersion compensator with a tuning range ~200ps/nm, peak-to-peak group delay ripple <14ps and 3-dB bandwidth approximately 2nm. Employing this device, the power penalty in a 40- Gb/s X5/10km conventional single mode fiber using carrier suppressed return-to-zero format is less than 0.7dB at a BER=10-10.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a femtosecond laser plane-by-plane (Pl-b-Pl) technology for inscription of high-quality fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The spherical aberration (SA) was introduced to elongate the focal volume, and then combined with the scanning process, an expanded rectangular refractive index modification (RIM) region can be achieved. Such RIM regions exhibit a length of 15 µm and a width of 14 µm. Note that it consists of a negative region and a positive region. We have systematically studied the influence of the overlap between the RIM region and fiber core on the spectrum of FBG. After optimizing, the core of a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) is covered completely by using the positive RIM region, resulting in a significant enhancement of the coupling strength coefficient (i.e., 3177.6 m-1). A 500 µm long FBG assembled by using these RIM regions can achieve a high reflectivity of 95.83%. Moreover, the cladding mode resonances in transmission spectrum are suppressed thoroughly, since the localized effect in RIM region was avoided. In addition, this FBG exhibits a high birefringence of 2.13 × 10-4. Therefore, the proposed fabrication method can be used to inscribe high-quality FBGs that could be used in many fields such as communication, fiber laser, polarization-selective filtering and multi-parameter sensing.

Abstract:The unique spectral behavior exhibited by a class of non-uniform Bragg periodic structures, namely chirped and apodized fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) influenced by parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, is presented. The interplay between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and nonuniformities brings exceptional functionalities in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase such as wavelength selective amplification and single-mode lasing for a wide range of variations in gain-loss. We observe that the device is no more passive and it undergoes a series of transitions from asymmetric reflection to unidirectional invisibility and multi-mode amplification as a consequence of variation in the imaginary part of the strength of modulation in different apodization profiles, namely Gaussian and raised cosine, at the given value of chirping. The chirping affords bandwidth control as well as control over the magnitude of the reflected (transmitted) light. Likewise, apodization offers additional functionality in the form of suppression of uncontrolled lasing behavior in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime besides moderating the reflected signals outside the band edges of the spectra.

Abstract:In this work, a method is proposed and demonstrated for fabrication of chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) in single-mode fiber by femtosecond laser point-by-point inscription. CFBGs with bandwidths from 2 to 12 nm and dispersion ranges from 14.2 to 85 ps/nm are designed and achieved. The sensitivities of temperature and strain are 14.91 pm/°C and 1.21pm/µε, respectively. Compared to the present phase mask method, femtosecond laser point-by-point inscription technology has the advantage of manufacturing CFBGs with different parameter flexibilities, and is expected to be widely applied in the future.

Abstract:We present a direct fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DCPCF) using a conventional FBG inscription setup. The DCPCF-FBG generates a distinctive reflection spectrum that exhibits both a broad reflected peak and a significant sidelobe on its short wavelength side only. We systematically characterized the temperature and strain sensitivities of the DCPCF-FBG, and demonstrated its temperature and strain characteristics. The response of the DCPCF-FBG to bending was also investigated, which distinguishes it from a conventional FBG.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the spectral characteristics that can be achieved in fiber reflection (Bragg) and transmission gratings. Both principles for understanding and tools for designing fiber gratings are emphasized. Examples are given to illustrate the wide variety of optical properties that are possible in fiber gratings. The types of gratings considered include uniform, apodized, chirped, discrete phase-shifted, and superstructure gratings; short-period and long-period gratings; symmetric and tilted gratings; and cladding-mode and radiation-mode coupling gratings.

Abstract:The spectral characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a transversely inhomogeneous refractive index profile, differs con- siderably from that of a transversely uniform one. Transmission spectra of inhomogeneous and asymmetric FBGs that have been inscribed with focused ultrashort pulses with the so-called point-by-point technique are investigated. The cladding mode resonances of such FBGs can span a full octave in the spectrum and are very pronounced (deeper than 20dB). Using a coupled-mode approach, we compute the strength of resonant coupling and find that coupling into cladding modes of higher azimuthal order is very sensitive to the position of the modification in the core. Exploiting these properties allows precise control of such reflections and may lead to many new sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel technique is proposed for refining the spectral regulation of chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) during the fabrication process, utilizing an ultraviolet (UV) laser with a chirped phase mask. By incorporating an additional phase into the Hamming window function, a new laser control function is generated. This supplementary phase directly enhances the waveform shift parameter and introduces an extra degree of freedom. Consequently, it becomes easier to accurately control the direct-current component in the photo-induced refractive index change during grating writing, leading to a more precise distribution of the refractive index gradient within the grating. The effectiveness of this method was validated through experiments conducted over a wide bandwidth of 20 nm for the CFBGs. The number of peaks from 1 to 4 were investigated, achieving a contrast of 40 dB. Extensive testing and verification were performed on the peak position shifts within the modulation bandwidth of numerous CFBGs. The results demonstrated that this new approach enables the fabrication of CFBGs with arbitrary waveform spectra. This technique significantly improves the optical performance and application value of CFBGs, offering a means to fabricate high-performance CFBGs using the UV mask method.

Abstract:A novel high-speed fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensor interrogator using dispersion-compensating fibre is proposed and demonstrated. The wavelength shift measurement of the FBG sensor is converted to time-domain measurement. The high-speed potential of this scheme was investigated experimentally, demonstrating an effective sampling speed of 2.44 megasamples per second.

Abstract:To improve the performance of FBG interrogation system ,a novel fiber Bragg grating sensor interrogation system based on a tunable fibe r Fabry-Perot (FFP) filter was demonstrated.Firstly,a reference fiber Bragg gra ting (FBG) was used as a wavelength reference element.By measuring the wavelengt h difference between reference FBG and sensor FBG,the drift of tunable FFP filte r’s cavity length was compensated.Secondly,a quadratic fit function wa s made with software based on experiment results.This function showed a good fit to the relationship between the displacement of PZT and control voltage.It was used to calculate the wavelength of the sensing FBG.In experiment,a strain of 0~ 1800 μe was applied to the sensing FBG and the maximum nonlinearity deviat ion of measured wavelength was 0.5%.Experiment results show that the measured er ror caused by the drift of FFP filter’s cavity length and PZT’ s nonlinearity is greatly reduced and a higher accuracy is obtained.
