Abstract:The coupling of disposable solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with performance reference compounds (PRCs) has been recently introduced to measure time-averaged freely dissolved concentrations (Cfree) of hydrophobic organic contaminants in sediments under laboratory conditions. To explore the use of PRC-SPME for in situ sampling in seawater, disposable PDMS fibers (35-μm and 100-μm coating) preloaded with stable isotope labeled analogues as PRCs were deployed at six stations (each with three depths) in the open ocean of the Palos Verdes Shelf (CA, USA) Superfund site for 33d to measure Cfree of DDT and its degradates. The observed values of fractional equilibration (feq) of PRCs were mostly <0.85, suggesting nonequilibrium conditions at the end of deployment. The observed feqs for the samplers varied with compound, sampling station and depth, validating the need for calibration to derive accurate Cfree. The Cfree values of DDE and DDD determined with PRC-SPME were in good agreement with those previously measured by in situ large-volume water sampling or polyethylene devices. The highest Cfree in seawater 5m off the ocean floor was 750pgL−1 for o,p′-DDE, 2170pgL−1 for p,p′-DDE, 24pgL−1 for o,p′-DDD, and 75pgL−1 for p,p′-DDD. Results of this study demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of using disposable PDMS fiber coupled with PRCs for in situ sampling.

Abstract:Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a class of the emerging pollutants that pose a potential environmental threat to marine ecosystems. In this study, a simple analytical method using ultrasound-assisted extraction combined with gas purges microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) coupled with GC-MS was utilized for the reliable and rapid determination of PAEs in different types of marine sediment. The analytical results showed that the method exhibited excellent reproducibility, linear responses, and detection limits, which verified the suitability of the method for the determination of PAEs in marine sediment. This approach requires minimal reagents, solvents, and sample pretreatment procedures as well as a short analysis time; thus, procedural blanks can be kept to a minimum. This method was demonstrated to be a highly efficient and sensitive quantitative analytical method for the simple detection of PAEs in marine sediment.
Development of Film-Based Passive Samplers for in Situ Monitoring of Trace Levels of Pyrethroids in Sediment

Abstract:Residues of pyrethroid insecticides tend to accumulate in bed sediments due to their strong hydrophobicity. Rather than the total or bulk sediment concentration, it is the freely dissolved concentration (C-free) that drives toxicity to benthic invertebrates. In this study we developed thin film-based samplers for in situ ambient monitoring of pyrethroids at trace levels in sediment. Out of five common polymer materials, polyethylene (PE) and silicone rubber (SR), were identified to offer superior enrichment for pyrethroids from sediment. To circumvent the slow equilibrium process, C-13-permethrin and bifenthrin-d(5) were preloaded onto the films as performance reference compounds (PRC5). The PRC-preloaded film samplers were deployed at five sites in Southern California under field conditions for 7 d and retrieved for analysis. The sediment porewater C(free )of eight pyrethroids derived from PRC-PE films ranged from 173 to 903 ng/L accounting for 18.2-36.1% of the corresponding total porewater concentrations. The PRC-SR film samplers yielded C-free values closely mimicking those from the PRC-PE samplers, cross-validating the two sampling devices. Additionally, a significant positive association was found between the observed mortality from toxicity tests using Hyalella azteca and the C-free of bifenthrin (r = 0.628, p = 0.02). A significant linear correlation (R-2 = 0.99) between C-free derived from in situ monitoring and that of ex situ measurement under equilibrium conditions was also observed. Results from this study demonstrated that the film-based samplers may be used for in situ ambient monitoring to detect biologically relevant contamination of pyrethroids in bed sediments, which may contribute to improved risk assessment for this class of widely used insecticides. Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are brominated flame retardants (BFRs). The ubiquity and persistence of PBDEs in sediment have raised concerns over their environmental fate and ecological risks. Due to strong affinity for sediment organic matter, environmental fate and bioavailability of PBDEs closely depend on their phase distribution. In this study, disposable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fiber was used to derive the freely dissolved concentration (Cfree) of PBDEs in sediment porewater as a measurement of bioavailability. The PDMS-to-water partition coefficient (log KPDMS) was 5.46–5.83 for BDE 47, 99, and 153. In sediments, PBDEs were predominantly sorbed to the sediment phase, with Cfree accounting for <0.012% of the total chemical mass. The Cfree of PBDEs decreased as their bromination or sediment organic carbon content increased. The strong association with dissolved organic matter (DOM) implies a potential for facilitated offsite transport and dispersion in the environment that depends closely on the stability of sediment aggregates.

Abstract:The absorption of amoxycillin from the gastro-intestinal tract, with or without oral metoclopramide, has been evaluated. Levels of amoxycillin in the maternal blood and liquor prior to the induction of labour were of a therapeutic level against many organisms. However, absorption during labour, as reflected by maternal blood levels at delivery and cord blood levels, suggests that amoxycillin is poorly absorbed and may not reach adequate therapeutic levels in the fetus. Oral metoclopramide did not improve the absorption of amoxycillin. Should a parenteral form of amoxycillin become available, a similar study of blood and liquor levels may indicate that, like ampicillin, intramuscular administration is required for adequate therapeutic use at this stage of pregnancy. Until an oral formulation of an appropriate antibiotic is available which gives rapid absorption may and a sustained level of the chemotherapeutic agent in this situation, parenteral administration of an appropriate antibiotic remains mandatory.
Characterizing Polychlorinated Biphenyl Exposure Pathways from Sediment and Water in Aquatic Life Using a Food Web Bioaccumulation Model

Abstract:ABSTRACTContaminant remediation decisions often focus on sediment–organism relationships, omitting the partitioning between sediment and water that exists across a given site. The present study highlights the importance of incorporating nonsedimentary routes of exposure into a nonequilibrium, steady‐state food web bioaccumulation model for predicting polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in benthic invertebrates. Specifically, we examined the proportion of overlying water relative to the sediment porewater respired by benthic invertebrates, which has been used in previous studies to examine contaminant bioaccumulation. We evaluated the model accuracy using paired benthos–sediment samples and an extensive fish contamination database to ensure realistic predictions at the base of the Detroit River (Ontario, Canada, and Michigan, USA) food web. The results demonstrate that, compared with empirical regression analyses, the food web bioaccumulation model provided satisfactory estimates of PCB bioaccumulation for benthos simulations and better estimates for fish simulations. Our results showed that PCB bioaccumulation measurements are significantly affected by variations in pollutant uptake and elimination routes via the overlying water, which in turn are affected by the degree of disequilibrium of PCBs between sediments and water. Interestingly, we obtained contrasting results regarding the effectiveness of remediation strategies for reducing the contaminant burden of the aquatic biota based on different proportions of overlying water relative to porewater. These differences could consequently impact decisions about the approaches for source control and strategic sediment remediation. This study suggests that bioaccumulation assessments could be improved through better identification of chemical uptake–elimination routes in benthos and by accounting for chemical bioavailability in sediment and water components in areas with disequilibrium.Integr Environ Assess Manag 2019;00:000–000. © 2019 SETAC
Equilibrium passive sampling: A novel approach to determine internal tissue concentrations of hydrophobic organic compounds in biota

Abstract:Equilibrium passive sampling has been applied in numerous abiotic environmental matrices. This approach was extended to biological material. In this work, a passive equilibrium sampling method for the measurement of HOCs in biota was developed as an innovative alternative because classical exhaustive extraction techniques are time-consuming and error-prone. The newly developed method is based on the well-proven SPME fiber method for sediment. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used as model lipophilic organic pollutants. Partition coefficients of PAHs and PCBs between the lugworm tissue and the PDMS sampling phase were determined. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated glass fibers were directly inserted in homogenized lugworm tissue and glass fibers were analyzed using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The method application on lugworms from tidal sand flats near Wilhelmshaven showed that the mean body residue values of PCBs (4 μg g-1) and PAHs (256 μg g-1) were about five times higher for PCBs and more than 22 times higher for PAHs compared to literature data for the North Sea area. This high level of contamination might be a consequence of the oil processing refinery located in direct proximity to the sampling site. This novel approach of applying the SPME method to biota will make biological monitoring more effective and holistic, because seasonally and area-wide changes in all environmental compartments can be recorded quickly.
Inhibition of aquatic toxicity of pyrethroid insecticides by suspended sediment.

Abstract:The use of pyrethroid insecticides is increasing in both agricultural and urban environments. Although pyrethroids display very high acute toxicities to water column organisms in laboratory tests, environmental water samples typically contain suspended sediment (SS) that can reduce the freely dissolved concentration of pyrethroids, hence their bioavailability. Consequently, phase distribution could play an important role in pyrethroid aquatic toxicology. In this study, we evaluated the effect of SS on the acute toxicity of four widely used pyrethroid insecticides to Ceriodaphnia dubia. In all assays, median lethal concentrations (LC50s) consistently increased with increasing SS, demonstrating the pronounced inhibitory effects of SS on pyrethroid toxicity. The LC50s in the 200 mg/L SS solutions were 2.5 to 13 times greater than those measured in sediment-free controls. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used to determine the apparent distribution coefficient Kd for the pyrethroids in the water samples. Under the assumption that only the freely dissolved fraction is bioavailable, the measured K-d was used to predict C. dubia LC50s in the water samples. The predicted LC50s were within a factor of two of the measured values for 95% of the treatments. Results from this stud suggest that the inhibitory effect of SS can be highly significant and must be considered in estimating exposures to pyrethroids in aquatic systems. The SPME methodology could be used effectively to measure bioavailable concentration and to predict the actual ecotoxicologic effects of pyrethroids.
Determination of multiple organic flame retardants in maricultural water using High-volume/High-throughput Solid-phase extraction followed by liquid/gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract:A rapid and efficient analytical method is proposed and optimized for the enrichment, extraction and instrument analysis of four typical organic flame retardants (OFRs), including organophosphate esters (OPEs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs) and dechlorane compounds (Dechloranes) in maricultural waters using High-volume/High-throughput Solid-phase extraction with in-situ ultrasonic technique followed by high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instrumental detection. The optimized pretreatment conditions were that the analytes were enriched by XAD-2 resins and eluted repeatedly with 50 mL hexane/acetone (1:1, v:v) for 5 min. The results of method validation exhibited that the developed method can be used for quantitative detection of 11 OPEs, 13 PBDEs, 3 HBCDs and 5 Dechloranes in water samples. The method detection limits (MDLs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) are 0.4-26.2 pg/L and 1.5-87.4 pg/L for OPEs, 23.3-35.4 pg/L and 77.5-117.9 pg/L for HBCDs, 0.8-97.4 pg/L and 2.6-324.7 pg/L for PBDEs and 9.3-78.5 pg/L and 31.0-261.8 pg/L for Dechloranes, respectively. The method was successfully applied in lagoon maricultural areas in Hainan province, and the results showed that 4 OFRs were detected in almost all water samples. Total concentrations of 18 water samples were 1.89-39.97 ng/L for OPEs, 0.18-5.40 ng/L for PBDEs, ND-0.24 ng/L for HBCDs and 0.01-1.77 ng/L for Dechloranes, respectively. The optimized analytical method is highly sensitive and efficient with expectation to play an essential role in monitoring the ultra-trace organic pollutants and providing an effective risk assessment in ecological environment.

Bioavailability-based Assessment of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor-Mediated Activity in Lake Tai Basin from Eastern China.

Abstract:Coupling polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based equilibrium passive sampling with chemical and bioassay analysis, we assessed aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated activity and contributing chemicals in sediment from Lake Tai Basin, Eastern China. The bioanalytical equivalent concentrations (BEQs) of AhR-active chemicals for the exhaustive (total burden) and PDMS extracts (bioavailable fractions) ranged from <9.5-300 ng TCDD-EQ/ kgdry weight (dw) and <0.096-2.2 ng TCDD-EQ/kgdw, respectively, which were of average levels compared to those reported elsewhere. The total concentrations of PAHs in sediment and PDMS were 17-4700 μg/kgdw and 0.61-10 μg/kgdw, respectively. The majority of the exhaustive extracts subject to acid treatment showed >70% decline in AhR-mediated activity, suggesting the minor contribution by persistent AhR ligands. Targeted analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) showed, however, that these chemicals contributed <40% to the overall effect in both exhaustive and PDMS extracts, indicating the presence of other labile AhR ligands. The concentrations of PAHs and BEQs of the AhR-mediated activity attributed to these chemicals in the exhaustive extracts can be back calculated from those in the PDMS extracts via a general organic carbon-PDMS partition coefficient. Similar quantitative conversion between PDMS and aquatic organisms was also verified for aquatic organisms via the lipid-PDMS partition coefficient. Therefore, our study provided a first insight into the quantitative links between bulk chemical burdens in sediment, chemical bioavailability, bioaccumulation potential and resulting mixture effects, as an integral part of predictive environmental risk assessment of contaminated sediment.
Comparison of chemical contaminant measurements using CLAM, POCIS, and silicone band samplers in estuarine mesocosms

Abstract:Discrete water samples represent a snapshot of conditions at a particular moment in time and may not represent a true chemical exposure caused by changes in chemical input, tide, flow, and precipitation. Sampling technologies have been engineered to better estimate time‐weighted concentrations. In this study, we consider the utility of three integrative sampling platforms: polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS), silicone bands (SBs), and continuous, low‐level aquatic monitoring (CLAM). This experiment used simulated southeastern salt marsh mesocosm systems to evaluate the response of passive (POCIS, SBs) and active sampling (CLAM) devices along with discrete sampling methodologies. Three systems were assigned to each passive sampler technology. Initially, all tanks were dosed at nominal (low) bifenthrin, pyrene, and triclosan concentrations of 0.02, 2.2, and 100 μg/L, respectively. After 28 days, the same treatment systems were dosed a second time (high) with bifenthrin, pyrene, and triclosan at 0.08, 8.8, and 200 μg/L, respectively. For passive samplers, estimated water concentrations were calculated using published or laboratory‐derived sampling rate constants. Chemical residues measured from SBs resulted in high/low ratios of approximately 2x, approximately 3x, and 1x for bifenthrin, pyrene, and triclosan. A similar pattern was calculated using data from POCIS samples (~4x, ~3x, ~1x). Results from this study will help users of CLAM, POCIS, and SB data to better evaluate water concentrations from sampling events that are integrated across time. Evaluation of Sensitivity and Specificity of Two Crustacean Biochemical Biomarkers

Abstract:AbstractBiochemical biomarkers are increasingly used for environmental assessment. Although the emphasis has been on vertebrate biomarkers, invertebrates biomarkers have been developed as well. This study evaluated the usefulness of biomarker responses of freshwater invertebrates by comparing the sensitivity and specificity of endpoints at three levels of biological organization: biochemical, physiological, and individual. The study focused on the epibenthic amphipod Gammarus pulex L., and the end points were cholinesterase (ChE) and glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST) activity, feeding inhibition, and mortality. Chemicals representing five major classes of toxic chemicals were assessed, including zinc, linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS; surfactant), lindane (organochlorine), pirimiphos‐methyl (organophosphorus), and permethrin (pyrethroid). Lethality was the least sensitive endpoint, with 96‐h LC50 values ranging from 2.78 μg/L for permethrin to 6.31 mg/L for LAS. Comparison of the biochemical biomarkers and the sublethal feeding rate assay indicated that whereas ChE inhibition was a specific indicator of organophosphate exposure, the biochemical assay was more than 13‐fold less sensitive than the feeding rate assay. The GST biomarker performed with greater sensitivity but with lower specificity compared with the ChE biomarker. However, only on exposure to lindane did the GST biomarker marginally outperform the feeding rate assay in terms of sensitivity. Feeding inhibition is both a general and a sensitive (LC50, <3%) indicator for exposure to a range of chemicals. The Gammarus sp. ChE biomarker may have utility in providing a diagnostic and rapid indicator of organophosphate exposure, but evidence from this and other studies questions the sensitivity of this biomarker in predicting sublethal, higher‐order effects. The GST biomarker may provide a rapid and sensitive indicator for toxicant exposure, but it has limited use as a diagnostic tool and provides only limited improvement in sensitivity over more ecologically relevant sublethal end points (e.g., feeding rate, growth rate).

Abstract:The use of polymeric passive samplers (often polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS, or low-density polyethylene, LDPE) to indicate water concentrations of hydrophobic organic compounds under environmental conditions generally requires two key parameters, a compound-specific polymer-water equilibrium partition coefficient ( Kpw ), and the degree of equilibration achieved in a given environmental exposure scenario. Herein, we have developed model to extrapolate equilibration of performance reference compounds between polymer and pore water across different compound classes that is also dependent upon accurate estimates of Kpw . We have also developed quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models, to estimate Kpw for PAHs, PCBs, DDx, and dioxin/furans for the two most common polymeric samplers, PDMS and LDPE. The QSAR models developed in this study provide high accuracy consistent estimates for Kpw across the different HOC families. The root mean square error of the QSAR for KLDPE−w was 0.226 log units based upon measured values for 159 compounds and 0.184 log units for KPDMS−w based upon measured values for 131 compounds.

Predicting Bioavailability of PAHs and PCBs with Porewater Concentrations Measured by Solid‐phase Microextraction Fibers

Abstract:Bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was measured in the deposit-feeding oligochaete Ilyodrilus templetoni exposed for 28 d to Anacostia River sediment (Washington, DC, USA) and to an initially uncontaminated sediment from Brown Lake (Vicksburg, MS, USA) sequentially diluted with 3 to 25% contaminated New Bedford Harbor sediment (New Bedford, MA, USA). The Anacostia River sediment studies represented exposure to a historically contaminated sediment with limited availability, whereas exposure to the other sediment included both the historically contaminated New Bedford Harbor sediment and fresh redistribution of contaminants into the Brown Lake sediments. Organism tissue concentrations did not correlate with bulk sediment concentrations in the Anacostia River sediment but did correlate with the sequentially diluted sediment. Porewater concentrations measured via disposable solid-phase microextraction fiber (SPME) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), however, correlated well with organism uptake in all sediments. Bioaccumulation was predicted well by a linear relationship with the product of porewater concentration and compound octanol water partition coefficient (Anacostia, slope = 1.08, r(2) = 0.76; sequentially diluted sediments, slope = 1.24, r(2) = 0.76). The data demonstrate that the octanol water partition coefficient is a good indicator of the lipid water partition coefficient and that porewater concentrations provide a more reliable indicator of bioaccumulation in the organism than sediment concentrations, even when the route of uptake is expected to be via sediment ingestion. In situ calibration of polar organic chemical integrative samplers to monitor organophosphate flame retardants in river water using polyethersulfone membranes with performance reference compounds

Abstract:Passive sampler is an innovative way of monitoring chemicals in different environmental. A modified polar organic chemical integrative sampler (m-POCIS) with a performance reference compound (PRC) was used to evaluate the concentrations of 8 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) under field conditions. The m-POCIS was deployed for 15days under laboratory conditions and 21days under in situ conditions to determine the concentrations of OPFRs. The analytes were trapped in the sorbent and the microporous polyethersulfone (PES) membrane of the m-POCIS. Sampling rates (Rs) were determined for the studied compounds and ranged from 0.02±0.0003L/d (triphenylphosphine oxide, TPPO) to 0.24±0.021L/d (tripropyl phosphate, TPrP) in the laboratory. The membranes accumulation increased with usage and was correlated to the logKow. Among the tested compounds, tripentylphosphate (TPeP) and triphenylphosphate (TPhP) had the highest logKow values and were mostly detected in the membranes. This behavior resulted in a lag-phase, which was measured by extrapolating the data from the last third of the uptake phase (quasilinear) to the x-axis using a linear regression, before the compounds transferred into the sorbent. TPhP was the only compound with a lag-phase of 3.9days during the 15days experiment. Deuteratedtributyl phosphate (TBP-d27) and desisopropyl atrazine-d5 (DIA-d5) were identified through specific experiments as potential PRC. The results from the PRC calibrations suggested that DIA-d5 (ke (in situ)=0.075±0.0048day-1) can be used as a PRC for the evaluation of OPFRs using m-POCISs. The time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations estimated by the m-POCIS with or without a PRC were significantly correlated with the corresponding values determined from the grab samples. After the PRC calibration, the TWA concentrations of the tested OPFRs in an aquatic environment were lower than those estimated using the laboratory sampling rates (Rs). The m-POCIS with a PRC correction was a suitable tool for estimating OPFRs TWA concentrations in the Yangtze River.

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the contaminants of concern in aquaculture ponds due to their frequent detection and high bioaccumulation in aquatic products and hence high dietary risks to human beings. In this study, magnetic activated carbon (MAC) was added as a stabilization and removal adsorbent to native pond sediment with known contamination of HMs and PAHs to reduce the tissue residues and dietary risks of HMs and PAHs in a model aquaculture species (Venerupis philippinarum) in the course of a 28-day bioaccumulation experiment. Meanwhile, passive sampling techniques based on diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were applied to sense the bioavailable fraction of HMs and PAHs in sediment during the stabilization process. The results showed that 3% dosage of MAC to sediment achieved the most cost-effective stabilization for HMs and PAHs. A remarkable decrease was observed with the tissue residues of HMs and PAHs in V. philippinarum (28–47% for HMs and ~76% for ∑PAHs), which was quantitatively linked to the decline in their bioavailable concentrations in sediment pore water (31–46% for HMs and ~76% for ∑PAHs). Consequently, the target hazard quotients (THQs) posed by HMs and incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) by PAHs in V. philippinarum were reduced by 38% and 46%, respectively. Along with the magnetic recovery of ~70% MAC from the sediment, HMs (4.8–13%) and PAHs (2–60%) can be effectively removed. We further established a multi-domain equilibrium sorption model that was able to predict the optimal amendment of MAC for quantitative mitigation of bioavailable PAHs in sediment pore water within a certain range of MAC dosage. Future studies are warranted to explore the applicability domain of MAC for in situ remediation in aquaculture ponds to ensure the quality of farming organisms or to serve other purposes in aquatic systems.

Abstract:A quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method was developed for the multi-residue analysis of pesticides and antibiotics in aquaculture sediment using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The developed method is based on ultrasonic extraction with acetonitrile and phosphate buffer, salting with sodium chloride, and cleaning with dispersive solid-phase extraction adsorbent using primary secondary amine, C18, and graphitized carbon black, followed by HPLC-MS/MS detection. We optimized different extraction methods and the ratio of the cleanup adsorbents to achieve good recoveries at three spiking levels that ranged from 60.4% to 114% with a relative standard deviation below 15% (n = 6). For all analytes, except for flufenoxuron, the limits of quantification were between 1 and 5 µg/kg (dry weight). The validated method was successfully applied to real samples collected from 20 aquacultural ponds, confirming the feasibility of the proposed method. The concentrations of the target analytes in the sediments (dry weight) were in the ranges of 2.2-35.0 µg/kg for sulfonamides, 0-409.1 µg/kg for quinolones, 0-6.56 µg/kg for macrolides, and 0-4.9 µg/kg for pesticides. Moreover, the co-occurrence of pesticides and antibiotics may potentially pose a high risk to sediment-dwelling organisms in nine out of the 20 investigated locations.

Abstract:Pairs of genetically marked bacteriophage lambda DNAs have been injected into Xenopus laevis oocyte nuclei. After suitable incubation, DNA was recovered and packaged into phage particles in vitro. When these were plated onto a selective host, phage recombinant for parental markers were observed. Recombination was dependent on both parents being present in the same oocyte nucleus and was roughly proportional to the physical separation of the markers. Thus, the oocytes appear to contain the machinery necessary for performing typical genetic recombination. This system offers a great deal of scope and flexibility for future studies of recombination mechanisms at the molecular level in vertebrates.
Sediment remediation using submerged plants mitigated the bioaccumulation of organic contaminants in benthic organisms in simulated freshwater aquaculture ponds

Abstract:Few studies have investigated whether growing submerged plants can provide significant mitigation of both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and antibiotics (ATBs) in sediments and cultured aquaculture products. In this study, Corbicula fluminea was selected as the indicator organism in the laboratory simulation experiment, and four remediation systems using Vallisneria natans L. (VN), Hydrilla verticillate L. (HV), Elodea nuttallii P. (EL) and Control Check (CK) were constructed individually. The accumulated concentrations (Cb) and changes in both bioavailability (Cfree) and bulk burden (Cs) of 16 PAHs and four ATBs were analyzed before, during, and after the experiment. Compared with the CK group, the introduction of VN, HV, and EL reduced: Cb of ΣPAHs by 43%, 32%, and 27%, respectively; ΣATBs by 68%, 49%, and 39%, respectively, in Corbicula fluminea; the corresponding cancer risk of ΣPAHs by 19%, 8.9%, and 13%, respectively; and the target hazard quotients of ΣATBs by 73%, 48%, and 41%, respectively. The freely dissolved concentrations of ΣPAHs and ΣATBs (Cfree) in the experimental groups decreased by 38%− 58% and 37%− 70%, respectively. More ATBs than PAHs were reduced in biota, with VN showing the highest efficiency. Reduction in Cfree was more related to reduction in Cb than reduction in Cs. In terms of Cb reduction, Cfree was more indicative for ATBs than PAHs. Analyses of the bacterial community revealed that the introduction of submerged plants significantly increased the abundance of Sphingomonas and Mycobacterium, with specific degradation effects observed for high molecular weight PAHs in the sediment.
