Abstract:The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and relative strength with respect to baseline for a fatiguing free dynamic task targeting the upper extremity, namely simulated order picking, and determine whether the relationship remains the same for different conditions (i.e., pace and weight) and with fatigue. Fourteen participants (seven males, seven females) performed four sessions that included two 45-min work periods separated by 15 min of rest. The work periods involved picking weighted bottles from shoulder height and packaging them at waist height for four combinations of bottle mass and picking rate: 2.5 kg-15 bottles per minute (bpm), 2.5 kg-10 bpm, 2.5 kg-5 bpm, and 1.5 kg-15 bpm. Participants reported their RPEs every 5 min and performed a maximum isometric shoulder flexion exertion every 9 min. Pearson product-moment correlation was used to evaluate the linear relationship between RPE and relative strength for each subject and work period. Then, the effects of condition and work period on the average relationship were assessed using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). For the first 45-min period, there were no significantly different correlations between RPE and relative strength across conditions (average r = -0.62 (standard deviation = 0.38); p = 0.57). There was a significant decrease in average correlation for the second work period (r = -0.39 (0.53)). These results suggest that individual subjective responses consistently increase while relative strength declines when starting from a non-fatigued state. However, correlations are weaker when re-engaging in work following incomplete recovery. Thus, starting fatigue levels should be accounted for when considering the expected relationship between RPE and relative strength.

In this study, 10 teenage male rowers were selected as subjects, and their body shape, sports quality, biochemical indexes, maximum oxygen intake, lactic acid, fujian, dynamometer performance and related indexes were measured. On the body shape, body function, biochemical metabolism, movement quality indexes of comprehensive evaluation, can understand the athletes' physical fitness level and characteristics, through the analysis of some physiological and biochemical indexes of athletes, the athletes were evaluated by special aerobic and anaerobic exercise capacity, comprehensive evaluation of the athletes' physical fitness, hope to provide experiment basis for training plan, and to explore the feasibility of using physiological parameter prediction rowing results.

Abstract:Introduction: The oxygen uptake ( V ̇ O 2 ) vs power output relationship from ramp incremental exercise is used to prescribe aerobic exercise. As power output increases, there is a delay in V ̇ O 2 that contributes to a misalignment of V ̇ O 2 from power output; the mean response time (MRT). If the MRT is not considered in exercise prescription, ramp incremental-identified power outputs will elicit V ̇ O 2 values that are higher than intended. We compared three methods of determining MRT (exponential modeling (MRT EXP ), linear modeling (MRT LIN ), and the steady-state method (MRT SS )) and evaluated their accuracy at predicting the V ̇ O 2 associated with power outputs approximating 75% and 85% of gas exchange threshold and 15% of the difference between gas exchange threshold and maximal V ̇ O 2 (Δ15). Methods: Ten males performed a 30-W∙min −1 ramp incremental and three 30-min constant power output cycle ergometer trials with intensities at 75% gas exchange threshold, 85% gas exchange threshold, and ∆15. At each intensity, the measured steady-state V ̇ O 2 during each 30-min test was compared to the V ̇ O 2 predicted after adjustment by each of the three MRTs. Results: For all three MRT methods, predicted V ̇ O 2 was not different ( p = 1.000) from the measured V ̇ O 2 at 75%GET (MRT EXP , 31 mL, MRT LIN , −35 mL, MRT SS 11 mL), 85%gas exchange threshold (MRT EXP −14 mL, MRT LIN −80 mL, MRT SS −32 mL). At Δ15, predicted V ̇ O 2 based on MRT EXP was not different ( p = .767) from the measured V ̇ O 2 , but was different for MRT LIN ( p < .001) and MRT SS ( p = .03). Conclusion: Given that the intensity is below gas exchange threshold, all model predictions implemented from the current study matched the exercise prescription.

Physiological and biomechanical responses to exercise on two different types of rowing ergometers in NCAA Division I oarswomen

Abstract:Background: Stationary (SE) and dynamic (DE) rowing ergometers, that are utilized for indoor training and physical assessment of competitive rowers, may elicit different physiological and biomechanical responses. The present study used SE and DE ergometers to examine submaximal and peak physiological and biomechanical responses during an incremental rowing test. Methods: Twelve National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I oarswomen performed seven-stage rowing tests with the last stage performed with maximal effort. Heart rate (HR), lactate (LA), oxygen uptake (VO2), ventilation (VE), stroke rate (SR), gross efficiency (GE), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were obtained; while trunk, hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow ranges of motion (ROM) were measured. Results: SR was higher at maximal stage DE (29.3 vs. 34.8 strokes/min, p = 0.018, d = 1.213). No difference occurred in responses of maximal stage HR, RPE, VO2, VE, LA, or GE between the two ergometers. Submaximal LA and SR were greater on the DE for all submaximal stages. Submaximal VE was greater on the DE for all submaximal stages except Stage 3 (p = 0.160, d = 0.655). VO2 was higher on the DE Stages 2-5. GE was higher on the SE for Stages 2-5. Athletes showed increased trunk (p = 0.025, [Formula: see text] = 0.488) and knee (p = 0.004, [Formula: see text] = 0.668) ROM on SE. Conclusion: Rowing on the DE appears to elicit a greater stroke rate and more optimal joint angles especially at high intensities. Hence, the DE is worthy of consideration as a preferred ergometer for women rowers.
Identifying time-varying dynamics of heart rate and oxygen uptake from single ramp incremental running tests

Abstract:Objective: The fact that ramp incremental exercise yields quasi-linear responses for pulmonary oxygen uptake (V̇O2) and heart rate (HR) seems contradictory to the well-known non-linear behavior of underlying physiological processes. Prior research highlights this issue and demonstrates how a balancing of system gain and response time parameters causes linear V̇O2 responses during ramp tests. This study builds upon this knowledge and extracts the time-varying dynamics directly from HR and V̇O2 data of single ramp incremental running tests. Approach: A large-scale open access dataset of 735 ramp incremental running tests is analysed. The dynamics are obtained by means of 1st order ARX models with time-variant parameters. This allows for the estimates of time constant (τ) and steady state gain (SSG) to vary with work rate. Main results: As the work rate increases, τ-values increase on average from 38 to 132 seconds for HR, and from 27 to 35 seconds for V̇O2. Both increases are statistically significant (p < 0.01). Further, SSG-values decrease on average from 14 to 9 bpm/(km.h-1) for HR, and from 218 to 144 mL.min-1 for V̇O2 (p < 0.01 for decrease parameters of HR and V̇O2). The results of this modelling approach are line with literature reporting on cardiorespiratory dynamics obtained using standard procedures. Significance: We show that time-variant modelling is able to determine the time-varying dynamics HR and V̇O2 responses to ramp incremental running directly from individual tests. The proposed method allows for gaining insights into the cardiorespiratory response characteristics when no repeated measurements are available.

Abstract:Background: The 6-minute rowing ergometer test (6-minRT) is valid and reliable for establishing maximal aerobic power (MAP) in amateur male rowers. However, ventilatory thresholds (VTs) have not yet been established with their mechanical correspondence in this test. Objective: The primary objective was to determine the VTs in the 6-minRT achieved by amateur male rowers, while the secondary objective was to determine the correspondence between ventilatory, mechanical, and heart rate (HR) outcomes of the 6-minRT. Methods: Sixteen amateur male rowers were part of the study. All participants were instructed to perform an incremental test (IT) and a 6-minRT. Determination of the ventilatory parameters for the first ventilatory threshold (VT1), the second ventilatory threshold (VT2), and 6minRTVO2max were performed by correlating the outcomes of VT1, VT2, and VO2max obtained in the IT, with the outcomes of 6-minRT. For these purposes, Pearson's test was used, with the following criteria: trivial, <0.1; small, 0.1-0.3; moderate, 0.3-0.5; high, 0.5-0.7; very high, 0.7-0.9; or practically perfect, >0.9. The significance level was p < 0.05. Results: The IT analysis determined that VT1 and VT2 correspond to 55 and 80% of VO2max, respectively. A high correlation was observed between IT outcomes in VT1, VT2, and VO2max, with the outcomes of 6-minRT (r > 0.6). Conclusion: Based on IT ventilatory parameters and concordance analysis, VT1 and VT2 of 6-minRT are determined at 55 and 80%, respectively, of both ventilatory parameters and their corresponding mechanical outcomes and HR.
The Oxygen Uptake Response to Incremental Ramp Exercise

Abstract:An incremental ramp exercise is a protocol that is frequently used in the domain of exercise testing to get an insight into the exercise tolerance of both healthy active populations (including athletes) and patients, due to the specific characteristics of the protocol. The continuous and linear increase in work rate is not only less strenuous for populations with a very low exercise capacity but it requires the aerobic metabolism to adapt to the continuously changing conditions. Therefore, this protocol can provide important information on the adaptive capacity of individuals to exercise in non-steady-state conditions. The ramp exercise has also been used in the past two decades to get an insight into the underlying mechanisms of the oxygen uptake ($$\dot V$$O2) response (and kinetics) to exercise. Against the expectations, it has been shown that the parameters that quantify the $$\dot V$$O2 response to ramp exercise do not completely correspond to those obtained from constant work-rate transitions and incremental step exercise. For that reason, it could be concluded that the $$\dot V$$O2 response is specific to ramp exercise, and thus is determined by other mechanisms than those which determine other protocols. Although the $$\dot V$$O2 response to ramp exercise has a high level of reproducibility and a uniform pattern can be observed, especially for the $$\dot V$$O2 response below the gas exchange threshold (GET) [above the GET, the $$\dot V$$O2 response is less clear, some prudence is necessary when interpreting potential differences in the $$\dot V$$O2 response between populations. Several methodological issues (e.g. baseline work rate, ramp slope) exert an important impact on the $$\dot V$$O2 response to ramp exercise. The main purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the methodological and physiological factors that have an impact on the $$\dot V$$O2 response to ramp exercise. It is of importance that exercise physiologists take these factors into consideration, not only prior to the conductance of the ramp exercise in a variety of subjects, but also when interpreting the obtained results.

Abstract:Background Olympic rowing relies heavily on aerobic metabolism, but the demands on strength and power have not yet been thoroughly investigated (Lawton et al., 2011). As the characteristic pacing strategy compounds an initial start sprint, a sustained middle section and end spurt, the neuromuscular and physiological requirements of the particular phases need to be considered more closely (Garland, 2005; Mikulic, 2011). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify strength qualities for distinct phases in rowing performance in adolescent athletes. Methods The cross-sectional analysis of fourteen national competitive rowing athletes (4 female; 10 male) included anthropometrics, isometric and isokinetic leg press, back extension and flexion, isometric mid-thigh pull (MTP) and handgrip strength, VO2max, and a 2000 m time trial, in which peak forces were measured in the start, middle and end phase. The rate of force developments (RFD) were obtained for isometric leg press (150 and 350 ms) and MTP (150 ms and 300 ms). Stepwise regression models were created for ergometer performance in the start, middle and end phases. Results The best fit model for the start phase included isometric back extension and RFD 300 ms of MTP (R2 = 0.912, p < 0.001), while for the middle section it were VO2max, isometric leg press and sitting height (R2 = 0.844, p < 0.001). For the end phase a best fit was observed for isometric back flexion, RFD 350 ms of leg press, body height and sex (R2 = 0.965 p < 0.001), whereas absolute VO2max, isokinetic back flexion and sex explained variance over the entire 2000 m time trial (R2 = 0.975, p < 0.001). Conclusion For the high acceleration at the start, force transmission through maximum back strength seems to be essential, while fast power production along the kinetic chain is also relevant (Baudouin & Hawkins, 2002). In addition to VO2max, produced maximum strength in the leg press explains the importance for the force production of the sustained middle section (Cosgrove et al., 1999). These results indicate that maximal force complements the reliance on VO2max, as well as neuromuscular parameters and maximal force transmission seems to be important for the start phase. Abstract:Sports injuries often arise from improper scheduling of exercise loads, and timely assessment of these loads is essential for minimizing injury risk. This article investigates the validity of using changes in pupillary light reflex (PLR) during dynamic aerobic training as a novel approach to evaluating exercise load. Dynamic aerobic training was conducted on a power bicycle for 15 min. With a 3-minute interval as the demarcation line, PLR measurement was performed before training and heart rate was recorded throughout the process. The Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale invented by Borg was used for scoring before training and after training. The normal distribution of data was confirmed through the Shapiro-Wilk test. Pearson correlation analysis was used to quantify the correlation between variables. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC) analysis were used to determine the indicators of exercise load. The optimal threshold of the indicators was calculated through the Youden index to evaluate sensitivity and specificity. Thirty male second-tier athletes with a mean age of 23.66 ± 2.21 years, a mean height of 175.3 ± 6.5 cm, and a mean weight of 68.99 ± 10.35 kg participated in this study. Based on the RPE scale results, it was confirmed that the 15-minute dynamic aerobic exercise successfully elicited varying levels of perceived exertion among the athletes. The findings of this study indicate significant changes in PLR and heart rate (HR) with increasing exercise duration and external load. There were strong correlations between RPE and maximum constriction velocity (MCV) (|r| = 0.8309, p < 0.001, negative correlation), maximum diameter (INIT) ( r = 0.7641, p < 0.001, positive correlation), time to reach 75% recovery (T75) (|r| = 0.7289, p < 0.001, negative correlation), and HR ( r = 0.8170, p < 0.001, positive correlation). Additionally, the results suggest that MCV is the most significant potential indicator for detecting internal load, exhibiting high specificity and sensitivity (AUC = 0.8509, p < 0.001). Further analysis using the Youden index identified 5.07 mm/s as the optimal cutoff value for MCV, indicating that when MCV ≤ 5.07 mm/s, the athletes' internal load has reached an "Intense" state. PLR may be a potential indicator for assessing internal load Further investigation could involve developing a non-invasive exercise load detection system based on pupillary variable indicators, providing a valuable new approach for accurately measuring exercise load.

Abstract:Each stretch-shortening-cycle (SSC) in elite sports (e.g. jumping, cycling), is characterised by utilising optimal movement-parameters (e.g. muscle shortening velocity), for maximum power (jump height, cycle velocity). It is however unclear if relevant SSC movement-parameters in rowing, such as stroke rate and gearing, have to be maximised to obtain maximum power output or if an optimum relation emerges. Thus, we measured rowing-power (Prow), leg-power (Pleg) and work-per-stroke (WPS) at of varying stroke rates (20–45 spm), gearings (lever-changes 0.87–0.90 m) and drag factors (100–180 Ws3/m3) during rowing. Experienced sub-elite young athletes performed sprint-series on (single scull, n = 69, 20 ± 2 years, 186 ± 7 cm, 84 ± 9 kg) and off the water (rowing-ergometer, n = 30, 19 ± 3 years, 185 ± 11 cm, 77 ± 19 kg). Prow increased with stroke rate for ergometer-test (r = 0.97, p r = 0.98, p r = 0.79, p r = −0.10, p = 0.166) during ergometer-measurements. Drag factor (ergometer: r = 0.83, p r = 0.60, p row. These results indicate that no optimum stroke rate, gearing and drag factor exist for maximum power in rowing (sprint-measurement-range). Accordingly, the measurements yielded maximum power for maximum stroke rate, gearing, and drag factor.

Five-Week, Low-Intensity Blood Flow Restriction Rowing Improves V̇o 2max in Elite Rowers

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000–000, 2024—This controlled intervention study examined the effects of low-intensity rowing with blood flow restriction (BFR) on maximal oxygen uptake (V̇ o 2 max), peak power output during ramp testing (PPO), and 2000-m time trial performance (P2k). Eleven, highly elite, male rowers (22.1 ± 1.6 years; 92.6 ± 3.8 kg; 1.93 ± 0.04 m; 7.9. ± 2.2 years rowing experience; 20.4 ± 2.0 h·w −1 training volume; 11.9 ± 1.1 session per week) trained 5 weeks without BFR (Base) followed by a 5-week BFR intervention period. BFR of the lower limb was applied through customized elastic wraps. BFR took place 3 times a week (accumulated net pBFR: 60 min·wk −1 ; occlusion per session: 2 times 10 min·session −1 ) and was used exclusively at low intensities (<2 mmol·L −1 ). V̇ o 2 max, PPO, and P2k were examined before, between, and after both intervention periods. Bayesian’s credible intervals revealed relevantly increased V̇ o 2 max +0.30 L·min −1 (95% credible interval: +0.00 to +0.61 L·min −1 ) adaptations through BFR. By contrast, PPO +14 W (−6 to +34 W) and P2k −5 W (−14 to +3 W) were not noticeably affected by the BFR intervention. This study revealed that 15 sessions of BFR application with a cumulative total BFR load of 5 h over a 5-week macrocycle increased V̇ o 2 max remarkably. Thus, pBFR might serve as a promising tool to improve aerobic capacity in highly trained elite rowers.

Abstract:Background This study was designed to investigate the validity of maximal oxygen consumption (VO 2max ) estimation through the Firstbeat fitness test (FFT) method when using submaximal rowing and running programs for well-trained athletes. Methods Well-trained flatwater rowers ( n = 45, 19.8 ± 3.0 years, 184 ± 8.7 cm, 76 ± 12.9 kg, and 58.7 ± 6.0 mL⋅kg –1 ⋅min –1 ) and paddlers ( n = 45, 19.0 ± 2.5 years, 180 ± 7.7 cm, 74 ± 9.4 kg, and 59.9 ± 4.8 mL⋅kg –1 ⋅min –1 ) completed the FFT and maximal graded exercise test (GXT) programs of rowing and running, respectively. The estimated VO 2max was calculated using the FFT system, and the measured VO 2max was obtained from the GXT programs. Differences between the estimated and measured VO 2max values were analyzed to assess the accuracy and agreement of the predictions. Equations from the previous study were also used to predict the VO 2max in the submaximal programs to compare the accuracy of prediction with the FFT method. Results The FFT method was in good agreement with the measured VO 2max in both groups based on the intraclass correlation coefficients (>0.8). Additionally, the FFT method had considerable accuracy in VO 2max estimation as the mean absolute percentage error (≤5.0%) and mean absolute error (<3.0 mL⋅kg –1 ⋅min –1 ) were fairly low. Furthermore, the FFT method seemed more accurate in the estimation of VO 2max than previously reported equations, especially in the rowing test program. Conclusion This study revealed that the FFT method provides a considerably accurate estimation of VO 2max in well-trained athletes.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to determine the effect of stroke rate on performance, technique and core stability during rowing ergometer. Twenty-four high-level rowers performed maximal intensity one-minute bouts at 20, 28 and 34 spm on a RowPerfect3 ergometer. Power at the handle, legs, trunk and arms levels were determined, and core kinematics and neuromuscular activations were measured. The power at the handle was enhanced with a higher stroke rate in the first half of the drive phase due to higher segment's powers. This resulted in technical changes, as for instance greater mean to peak power ratio at each segment level. The higher trunk power preceded a delayed trunk extension but without significant increase in the erector spinae activation. This underlines the role of the core stability to transfer forces at a higher stroke rate. However, no co-activation parameters between trunk flexors and extensors helped further to understand this force transfer. Rowing at low stroke rate can be a training strategy to work on earlier trunk extension, while maintaining erectors spinae levels of activation. Training at higher stroke rate will induce a rowing technique closer to competition with greater neuromuscular activations, and maximise power production.

Abstract:Background: The incremental exercise test is commonly used to measure maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), but an additional verification test is often recommended as the "gold standard" to confirm the true VO2max. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) obtained in the ramp incremental exercise test and that in the verification test performed on different days at submaximal intensity. Additionally, we examined the roles of anaerobic performance and respiratory muscle strength. Methods: Sixteen physically active men participated in the study, with an average age of 22.7 ± 2.4 (years), height of 178.0 ± 7.4 (cm), and weight of 77.4 ± 7.3 (kg). They performed the three following tests on a cycle ergometer: the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT), the ramp incremental exercise test (IETRAMP), and the verification test performed at an intensity of 85% (VER85) maximal power, which was obtained during the IETRAMP. Results: No significant difference was observed in the peak oxygen uptake between the IETRAMP and VER85 (p = 0.51). The coefficient of variation was 3.1% and the Bland–Altman analysis showed a high agreement. We found significant correlations between the total work performed in the IETRAMP, the anaerobic peak power (r = 0.52, p ≤ 0.05), and the total work obtained in the WAnT (r = 0.67, p ≤ 0.01). There were no significant differences in post-exercise changes in the strength of the inspiratory and expiratory muscles after the IETRAMP and the VER85. Conclusions: The submaximal intensity verification test performed on different days provided reliable values that confirmed the real VO2max, which was not limited by respiratory muscle fatigue. This verification test may be suggested for participants with a lower anaerobic mechanical performance.

Abstract:This investigation examined the association between on‐water rowing stroke‐rate (SR), velocity and heart‐rate (HR) in highly trained rowers (n = 8 male; n = 8 female and 19.3 ± 1.1 year) over a 4‐month real‐world (i.e., variable environment and boat class) training period. On‐water SR, prognostic velocity (percent of world's best velocity) and HR were captured for 1453 sessions via smart‐watch and chest‐strap HR monitor. Data was filtered and smoothed with individual HR training zones identified (T1–T5). Linear mixed modeling and an overlapping index () were used to assess differences in SR and prognostic velocity between HR zones. Abstract:ABSTRACT Purpose This study reports the results of a 20-year (2005-2024) follow-up study of two 2-time Olympic and 6-time world champion rowing athletes. To provide a comprehensive picture of adaptations in physiological and performance characteristics to long-term training, we monitored the athletes’ physiological and performance data annually through five 4-year developmental phases. Methods Maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O 2max ), maximal minute power (MMP), and power output corresponding to anaerobic threshold (PAT) were derived from a ramp-wise exercise test on a rowing ergometer. Additionally, average power output sustained during all-out tests over 2000-m and 6000-m on a rowing ergometer was also obtained. Results V̇O 2max peaked at age 22 for Athlete A and at age 25 for Athlete B (at ~7 L·min -1 ), before stabilizing and then gradually declining to a range of 6.2-6.5 L·min -1 for both athletes. MMP stabilized in both rowers at values between 550 and 575 W and displayed minimal fluctuations over the final two phases of the study. Additionally, MMP closely resembled the corresponding average power output sustained during the 2000-m all-out tests on a rowing ergometer. Average power output during 2000-m and 6000-m all-out tests showed steady improvements over the monitored phases of the study, with highest power output crew averages for both 2000-m (532 W; 5 min 48 s) and 6000-m (463 W; 18 min 4 s) tests recorded during the last 4-year phase of the assessment. Conclusions Improvements in rowing ergometer performance over 2000-m and 6000-m appear to be largely independent of the multi-year changes in V̇O 2max . Long-term rowing training resulted in continuous improvements in MMP and PAT throughout the monitored phases, which more closely mimicked improvements in rowing ergometer performance.

Abstract:Purpose: To compare power output and pacing between maximal 1500- and 2000-m on-water rowing performances. Methods: Twenty-six (female n = 4, male n = 22) international rowers, across 6 boat classes, completed maximal 1500- and 2000-m on-water races, separated by 24 to 48 hours. Crew combinations and seat orders remained consistent between races. Peach PowerLine instrumentation measured power output and stroke rate. Differences in completion time, mean power output (MPO), percentage prognostic velocity (PPV; percentage of world record velocity in each boat class), stroke rate, and pacing variance were assessed using linear mixed modeling. Results: Compared with 2000-m, completion times were 90.4 (6.1) seconds shorter over 1500 m (−24.7% [0.7%]). Both MPO (P = .255, ηp2=.06) and PPV (P = .340, ηp2=.18) were not different between distances. Broadly, crews adopted a reverse-J-shaped pacing across both distances, demonstrating a reduced variance over 1500 m (P = .035, ηp2=.62). Percentage change in MPO from 2000 to 1500 m demonstrated a strong negative association with pacing variance over 1500 m (R2 = .74, P = .027). Conclusions: International rowing crews did not increase MPO or PPV when racing maximally over 1500 m compared to 2000 m. Comparable strategies were adopted over both distances, with less variance in pacing observed over 1500 m. The crews that demonstrated greater increases in MPO over the shorter race employed a flatter pacing strategy. To improve 1500-m on-water performance, rowers may need to adopt a more even pacing approach.
