Abstract:For dental/orthopedic implants to achieve better bone apposition and bone-implant bonding, various approaches to improve titanium surfaces have been developed. Recently, a fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA) coating on titanium (Ti) implants was made by sol–gel method and shown to be a possible applicative bone implant. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate biological responses and biomechanical bonding strength of FHA coated Ti implants as compared with that of the conventional Ti alloys and hydroxyapatite (HA) coated Ti implants. In vitro assays were made using human osteoblast-like cell (MG63) culture on different implants with cell attachment, morphology and differentiation evaluations. The implant plates were also implanted into the proximal metaphysis of New Zealand White rabbit tibiae. After 8 and 16 weeks implantation, mechanical and histological assessments were performed to evaluate biomechanical and biological behavior in vivo. The results showed that the cell adhesion and cell growth rate on the FHA and HA surface was higher than that on cp Ti surface (p<0.01), and insignificant difference was observed between two coated groups. Mechanical test demonstrated that the FHA implants had a higher interface shear strength than the both controls at 8 and 16 wks, with no significant difference with HA-Ti. Histologically, the coated implants revealed a significantly greater percentage of bone-implant contact when compared with the uncoated implants. Results demonstrated that the new FHA surface improved cell adhesion and proliferation. The coating exhibited a bioactive mechanical and histological behavior at bone-implant interface, suggesting that a useful approach by combined coating processes could optimize implant surfaces for bone deposition and early implant fixation.
Longer-Term Mechanical And Biological Evaluation Of Titanium Alloy Coated With Apatite Layer

Abstract:The objective of this study was the development and use of a biomimetic coating method, which deposits a thin and uniform apatite layer onto titanium (Ti) implants in simulated body fluid (SBF), for improving their bone-bonding ability. The mechanical characteristics and histology of commercially pure Ti and apatite layer-coated Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated in rabbit tibiae. Interface failure load was determined using a detaching test after periods of 6, 10, 24, and 32 weeks. The apatite layer-coated implants exhibited significantly higher failure load than the uncoated control at each time period (all p < 0.001). Histologically, the coated-implants bonded directly to bone via the uniform coating, with no intervening soft tissue. In uncoated controls, there was fibrous tissue intervening at the interface even at longer periods. SEM-EPMA demonstrated a Ca-P-rich layer on the coated implants and direct bonding at the interface. No sign of degradation and delamination of the coating was seen after periods of up to 32 weeks. Our results suggest that apatite layer coating on Ti alloys in situ may improve bone-to-implant bonding and make it as a promising coating material.

Abstract:To achieve improved osseointegration, there have been many efforts to modify the surface composition and topography of dental implants. Recently, the anodic oxidation treatment of titanium (Ti) has attracted a great deal of attention. Meanwhile, calcium phosphate is commonly applied to metallic implants as a coating material for fast fixation and firm implant–bone attachment on the account of its demonstrated bioactive and osteoconductive properties. In the present study, anodized surface and calcium phosphate deposition by electron beam evaporation were combined. Nanostructured calcium phosphate film was deposited on the micro-arc oxidized Ti. New apatite layer formed easily on the coated film when incubating in DPBS solution at 37°C. By adding basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in the DPBS solution, the bFGF could be immobilized in the newly formed apatite layer. The coated film enhanced osseointegration of Ti implants in vivo.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a non-bioceramic commonly used in human implants in the form of coatings, which are limited in their application by mechanical and wear resistance properties, as well as biodegradability. In this study, fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite (FHA) coatings were prepared on Ti–6Al–4V surfaces by plasma spraying method using a mixture of calcium fluoride and hydroxyapatite powders. The prepared coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy at different levels of calcium fluoride (3 wt.%, 6 wt.%, 9 wt.%, and 12 wt.%). The biocompatibility of the coatings was evaluated by in vitro mineralization experiments. Experimental results showed that at 9 wt.% of calcium fluoride, the prepared FHA coatings had better mechanical properties, with improved bond strength (28.2 MPa). The X-ray diffraction patterns of the coatings reflect the fluorine substitution during the spraying process and the 9FHA has the highest crystallinity according to the XRD analysis, which is closely related to the biological activity of the coating. In addition, Potentiodynamic polarisation showed that the sample coated with the 9FHA coating had the highest Ecorr and lowest Icorr, indicating the best corrosion resistance. The FHA coating exhibits faster apatite deposition in simulated body fluid, and the efficiency of apatite deposition increases with the increase of CaF 2 .

Abstract:Objective This study applied an electrochemical technology to prepare a nano-hydroxyapatite(nano-HA) coating and evaluated the effects of the nano-HA coating on osteoblast biological ability.Methods Titanium plates were roughened.Nano-HA coatings were deposited by the electrochemical technology.FSEM,FTIR and XRD analysis were used to observe topography and chemical composition of coatings.The biological activity was evaluated by the BMSCs cell culture.Results FSEM observation showed the rod-like crystals uniformity covered the porous surfaces,the diameter of which was 70～80nm.XRD and FTIR analysis showed this coating consisted of HA.Nano-HA coatings improved expression of ALP and OC.Conclusion Nano-HA coatings were deposited on rough titanium surfaces by the electrochemical technology and improved BMSCs into osteoblast.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of biomimetically and electrochemically deposited nano-hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on the osseointegration of porous titanium implants after 6 and 12 weeks of insertion in a rabbit bone model.Forty-two roughened implants were separated into 3 groups: roughened group, biomimetically deposited CaP (BDCaP) group, and electrochemically deposited HA (EDHA) group. Implant surface morphology of 3 groups (n = 6) was performed by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FSEM). Thirty-six implants were randomly inserted into tibias of 18 rabbits. After 6 and 12 weeks, tibias were retrieved and prepared for histomorphometric evaluation.FSEM showed the BDCaP crystals were flakelike, whereas the EDHA crystals were rodlike with a hexagonal cross section. Histological observation showed bone growth along the surfaces after 6 weeks. New bones were also seen on the BDCaP and EDHA implant surfaces in the marrow space. New bone on the roughened and EDHA implants became mature after 12 weeks. The EDHA implant showed significantly greater BIC and bone area compared with the roughened and BDCaP implants during 6 to 12 weeks (P < .05). The BDCaP implants did not evidently increase BIC and bone area compared to the roughened implants during the test period (P > .05).These results suggest that the EDHA coating has a better bone integration potential than does the BDCaP coating.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of biomimetically and electrochemically deposited hydroxyapatite on the fixation of an implant with bone tissue.Implants were separated into 3 groups: roughened group, biomimetically deposited calcium-phosphorus (BDCaP) group, and electrochemically deposited hydroxyapatite (EDHA) group. We randomly inserted 90 implants into the femurs of 45 rabbits. After 2, 4, and 8 weeks, the femurs were retrieved and prepared for removal torque tests (RTQs) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy observation.During the test period, the EDHA group showed significantly greater RTQ values than did the roughened group and BDCaP group. The BDCaP group failed to increase the RTQ values compared with the roughened group. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy observation showed that the amount of attached bone tissue on the EDHA-coated implant surface was more than that on the roughened and BDCaP-coated implant surfaces during the test period.The electrochemical hydroxyapatite coating contributes to the fixation between bone and implant compared with the roughened surface, whereas the biomimetic calcium-phosphorus coating has little effect on the fixation.
Enhanced antibacterial and osteogenic properties of titanium by sputtering a nanostructured fluoride-doped tantalum oxide coating

Abstract:Infections and poor osseointegration are the main challenges for titanium implants in clinical practice. Herein, we proposed fabricating a novel fluoride-doped tantalum oxide (F-TaO x ) coating on titanium by one-step reactive sputtering deposition to endow implants with superior antibacterial and osteogenic ability. By altering the fluorine and oxygen loading amount, the coating's physicochemical properties, corrosion resistance, antibacterial and osteogenic activities are tuned simultaneously. All coatings exhibit nano-morphology, superhydrophilicity and improved surface hardness. Despite containing fluoride, the F-TaO x coating produced with fluorine and oxygen dual-deposition still shows enhanced corrosion resistance due to the protection of existing metal oxidizes. The antibacterial test reveals that the F-TaO x coating exhibits long-lasting and superior antibacterial properties. The microenvironment acidification by F - , the excessive ROS generation and the disruption of ATP by F - , TiF 3 and Ta 2 O 5 , and the repulsive force by superhydrophilic surface synergistically result in bacterial death. The cell experiments indicate that the F-TaO x coating shows good cytocompatibility, promote cell spread and osteogenic differentiation by enhancing ALP activities and ECM mineralization. This work provides a promising strategy for the surface functionalization of metallic implants to produce dual anti-infection and osteogenesis effects for orthopedic and dental applications.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) alloys show excellent fatigue and corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratio, and no toxicity; however, poor osseointegration ability of Ti may lead to implant loosening in vivo. Plasma spraying of hydroxyapatite [HA, Ca10 (PO4)6 (OH)2] coating on Ti surfaces is commercially used to enhance osseointegration and the long-term stability of these implants. The biological properties of HA can be improved with the addition of both cationic and anionic dopants, such as zinc ions (Zn2+) and fluoride (F-). However, the hygroscopic nature of fluoride restricts its utilization in the radiofrequency (RF) plasma spray process. In addition, the amount of doping needs to be optimized to ensure cytocompatibility. We have fabricated zinc and fluoride doped HA-coated Ti6Al4V (Ti64) to mitigate these challenges using compositional and parametric optimizations. The RF induction plasma spraying method is utilized to prepare the coatings. Multiple parametric optimizations with amplitude and frequency during the processing result in coating thicknesses between 80 and 145 μm. No adverse effects on the adhesion properties of the coating are noticed because of doping. The antibacterial efficacy of each composition is tested against S. aureus for 24, 48, and 72 h, and showed that the addition of zinc oxide and calcium fluoride to HA leads to nearly 70 % higher antibacterial efficacy than pure HA-coated samples. The addition of osteogenic Zn2+and F- leads to 1.5 times higher osteoblast viability for the doped samples than pure HA-coated samples after 7-days of cell culture. Zn2+ and F- doped HA-coated Ti64 with simultaneous improvements in anti-bacterial efficacy and in vitro biocompatibility can find application in load-bearing implants, particularly in revision surgeries and immune-compromised patients.

Abstract:Abstract Titanium (Ti) is the widely used implant material in clinic, however, failures still frequently occur due to its bioinertness and poor antibacterial property. To improve the biological and antibacterial properties of Ti implants, micro-nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) coating was prepared on Ti surface by micro-arc oxidation (MAO), and then the antibacterial agent of chitosan (CS) was loaded on the HA surface through dip-coating method. The results showed that the obtained HA/CS composite coating accelerated the formation of apatite layer in SBF solution, enhanced cell adhesion, spreading and proliferation, and it also inhibited the bacterial growth, showing improved biological and antibacterial properties. Although, with the increased CS amount, the coverage of HA coating would be enlarged, resulting in depressed biological property, however, the antibacterial property of the composite coating was enhanced, and the cytotoxicity about CS was not detected in this work. In conclusion, the HA/CS coating has promising application in orthopedics, dentistry and other biomedical devices.

Abstract:Nano-sized titanium containing hydroxyaptite has been prepared, the particle size of nanoTiHA was shown to be 12-20 nm in width and 30-40 nm in length, smaller than that of nanoHA. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the phase purity of nanoTiHA produced. Antimicrobical assays demonstrated that nanoTiHA has excellent growth inhibitory properties, and is able to inhibit the growth of all bacterial strains tested, both Gram-negative and Gram-positive species, including multi-antibiotic resistant EMRSA 15 and EMRSA 16 'superbugs'. Biocidal activity against all four Staphylococcus spp was also shown at the concentration tested. Nanostuctured TiHA coating was successfully deposited onto Ti surfaces using EHDA spraying under optimized processing conditions with the thickness of the coating being further controlled by the spraying time. All of the nanoTiHA coated Ti surfaces were able to support human osteoblast (HOB) cell attachment and growth. The coating thickness did not significantly influence the proliferation of HOB cells on nanoTiHA coatings, while the ability of nanoTiHA coating to support HOB cell differentiation was demonstrated from the alkaline phosphatase activity. Our study showed that nanoTiHA has excellent anti-bacterial properties and the thin nanoTiHA coating was also able to support the attachment, growth and differentiation of HOB cells. Therefore, nanoTiHA coating could pave the way for the development of the next generation of dental and orthopedic implants by offering anti-infection potential in addition to osteoconductivity.

Abstract:Adhesion strength and fracture toughness are two crucial mechanical properties for bioceramic coatings on metal implants directly affecting successful implantation and long-term stability. In this study, the adhesion strength of sol–gel derived FHA coatings on Ti6Al4V substrates was measured by pull-out tensile test, and the toughness was assessed by energy release method. With increase of the degree of fluoridation, the adhesion strength increases up to about 40% and the fracture toughness increases about 200 to 300%. Contrary to the wide-spread belief, it is interesting to note that after soaking in the Tris-buffered physiological saline solution (for 21 days), the adhesion strength increases about 60% as compared with the as-deposited coating, instead of decreasing. The mechanism of the increase is discussed.

Abstract:Fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA) coatings were deposited onto Ti6Al4V substrates by sol–gel dip-coating method. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that fluoride ions were successfully incorporated into the hydroxyapatite (HA) lattice structure. The dissolution behavior in Tris-buffered physiological saline indicated that all fluoridated HA coatings had lower solubility than that of the pure HA coating. The lowest solubility was obtained at fluoride ion concentrations of 0.8–1.1M. In vitro cell responses were evaluated with human osteosarcoma MG63 cells in terms of cell morphology, proliferation and differentiation (alkaline phosphatase activity and osteocalcin level). For all coatings tested, similar cell morphologies and good cell viability were observed. Coatings fluoridated to 0.8–1.1 had a stronger stimulating effect on cell proliferation and differentiation activities. The influences on cell phenotypes were attributed mainly to a combined ion effect of Ca, P and F released from the coating during dissolution. For the best dissolution resistance and cell activities, it is recommended that the molar level of fluoride ion be from 0.8 to 1.1, such that the coating takes the form of Ca10(PO4)6(OH)1.2–0.9F0.8–1.1.

Abstract:<p>Titanium has been widely used in medical implants for hard tissue replacements. Nevertheless, the bioinert innate oxide layer on the titanium implant surface usually makes the implant fail to osseointegrate with the surrounding tissue after surgery. To improve the bioactivity of titanium implants, the deposition of calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings attracts much research interest owing to the excellent bioactivity and biocompatibility of CaP. This work successfully developed a promising synthetic method to prepare uniform fluoridated CaP coatings with ultrathin thicknesses (∼170 nm) and desired phases on acid etched pure titanium (AETi) substrates. A dense ultrathin coating with a dominant phase of fluoridated amorphous CaP (FACP) was obtained by an electrochemical deposition method in galvanostatic mode. After a heat treatment at 600 °C for 3 h in a humid atmosphere, the as-prepared coating was transformed to a coating with a dominant phase of fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA). Additionally, the dominant phase of the coating could be transformed from FACP to α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) by a heat treatment at 800 °C for 3 h. Unlike previously reported fluoridated CaP coatings with thicknesses of around several micrometers, the ultrathin thickness could potentially enhance the adhesive strength and ductility of coating. Notably, the fluorine incorporation in the coating could bring in additional benefits such as lower solubility, higher antibacterial activity, and higher adhesive strength. Electrochemical deposition associated with post heat treatment could obtain fluoridated CaP coatings with different desired phases in a controllable manner, which is very important since CaPs with different phases possess different properties and may be suitable for different biomedical applications. This study proposed a promising, simple, and low-cost method which can endow complex-shaped titanium implants with better bioactivity for dental and orthopedic applications.</p>

Abstract:This study discusses the contribution of Cu 2+ and Mg 2+ , two biologically important ions substituted into the structure of fluorohydroxyapatite. FHA, a partial substitution of fluorine ion in HA has received a great attention because it improves the corrosion resistance of orthopedic implants. Copper, Magnesium and copper-Magnesium doped fluorohydroxyapatite (FHA) coatings were electrochemical deposited on titanium (Ti) using a cyclic voltammetry technique. The coatings properties were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion behavior of coated and uncoated samples, immersed for 7 days in aerated simulated body fluid (SBF) in a presence of 0.2 g/l human serum albumin (HAS) was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The synergetic effect of albumin and doped elements on the degradation of Ti was studied. As a result of these investigations, it is revealed that: fluoride, copper and magnesium were successfully incorporated into apatite lattice structure. The additions of ions in FHA crystal matrix reduced the crystallite size, increased the crystallinity and changed the structure of F-hydroxyapatite. All the electrochemical techniques employed demonstrated that the coatings that were produced offered superior protection against corrosion for titanium when exposed to artificial body fluids. The nano-Mg-FHA coating improves effective protection to Ti and presents the highest corrosion resistance. The outcomes of this investigation were also compared with already published works to validate the research results.

Abstract:Fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA) coatings have been investigated as an alternative for pure hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings because FHA are less soluble and are equally bioactive. In this study, Ca(NO3)2, P2O5, and HPF6 have been used to prepare FHA coatings on Ti–6Al–4V substrates by sol–gel dip-coating method. The interface between the coating and the substrate is characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A TiO2 (rutile)-rich layer is found at the interface. The fluorine content fluctuates basically in sync with the oxygen content near the interface, which is ascribed to the formation of Ti(O2−xF2x). It is also found that the amount of rutile is related to the HPF6 amount in the dipping sol. The reason is ascribed to the existence of CaF2 at the interface, which provides more oxygen for rutile formation by forming hydrogen bonding (F⋯HO).

Abstract:A biphasic layer with a Zn-containing β-tricalcium phosphate (ZnTCP) phase and a fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA) phase on titanium alloy substrate was prepared by the sol–gel technique. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis results showed the ZnTCP/FHA layer to have a heterogeneous surface with microscaled gibbous structures originating from ZnTCP particle agglomeration. This layer had a slow and sustained Zn release behavior. The scratch test result of the ZnTCP/FHA layer was 489±4mN, indicating good interface bonding between the layer and substrate. The ZnTCP/FHA layer supported cell growth, and showed a statistically significant increase in cell viability in comparison with another biphasic layer (TCP/FHA) without Zn. This work demonstrates that the present biphasic ZnTCP/FHA layer has the potential to play a significant role in enhancing bone growth when used as the outermost part of bioactive coatings on metallic implants.
Human-Explainable Features for Job Candidate Screening Prediction

Abstract:Video blogs (vlogs) are a popular media form for people to present themselves. In case a vlogger would be a job candidate, vlog content can be useful for automatically assessing the candidates traits, as well as potential interviewability. Using a dataset from the CVPR ChaLearn competition, we build a model predicting Big Five personality trait scores and interviewability of vloggers, explicitly targeting explainability of the system output to humans without technical background. We use human-explainable features as input, and a linear model for the systems building blocks. Four multimodal feature representations are constructed to capture facial expression, movement, and linguistic usage. For each, PCA is used for dimensionality reduction and simple linear regression for the predictive model. Our system’s accuracy lies in the middle of the quantitative competition chart, while we can trace back the reasoning behind each score and generate a qualitative analysis report per video.
Preparation and Properties of Hydroxyapatite/Chitosan Coatings on Ti Surface by Different Electrochemical Methods

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) is the widely used implant material in clinic; however, failures still frequently occur due to its poor bioactivity and antibacterial property. To improve the bioactivity and antibacterial property, in this work, petaling micro-nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings were firstly prepared on Ti surface by micro-arc oxidation (MAO), and then, the antibacterial agent—chitosan (CS) was loaded on the HA surfaces. The CS was loaded by two methods: One is anodic oxidation, and the other is the in situ MAO. The degradability, bioactivity, biocompatibility and antibacterial activity of the two kinds of HA/CS coatings were examined and compared by in vitro tests. The results showed that, the two-step method induced HA/CS coating had more CS on Ti surface, showing better antibacterial property; however, the in situ MAO-induced HA/CS coating had longer degradation time and better biological property. The better antibacterial property was due to the increased CS amount on HA surface. The prolonged degradation time was due to the mixed structure of HA and CS. And the good biological property was attributed to the improved surface roughness, hydrophilicity and exposed HA area. Considering the long-term needs of both antibacterial and biological properties for implant materials, the in situ MAO-induced HA/CS coating has a greater potential to be used as an implant material in clinics.

Abstract:In this study, a hydroxyapatite (HA) was coated on a pure titanium surface by means of a complex oxidation and hydrothermal treatment. First an anodic oxidation was done on the titanium plates, followed by micro-arc oxidation. The HA-coated specimens and pure titanium specimens were immersed in SLB for 1, 5, and 10 days, respectively, to study their electrochemical behavior. The corrosion currents of HA-coated specimens were less than pure titanium specimens. This indicated that HA coating prevented surface metal ions of the implant from dissolving, thereby, reducing the tissue toxicity. The cytotoxic effect on fibroblasts L929 cells was measured by cell counting after being seeded for 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h. The number of surface cell attachments on the HA-coated specimens was much greater than on pure titanium specimens. The morphology of the cells on the HA coating had normal shapes and spread well with some cells climbing onto surface pores while cells on the pure titanium were oval shaped. The results confirm that the cell compatibility on HA-coated ion titanium surfaces is much better than pure titanium.
