Abstract:R134a will be phased out soon due to its high GWP. Replacing R134a with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and non- or slightly flammable fluids in the systems in stock should maintain the same level of system performance. This study focuses on the drop-in alternatives for R134a regarding a Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A simulation model coupled with a microchannel heat exchanger model is developed and validated for calculating the system Coefficient of Performance (COP) and capacity of the Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A comprehensive method is developed to evaluate the alternative candidates combining the performance simulation and the flammability estimated of mixtures. The evaluation includes the system performance, environmental impact, and flammability of alternative mixtures. 15 pairs of binary mixtures from six pure fluids (R134a, R1234yf, R1234ze(E), R32, R227ea, and R152a) with 99 compositions are evaluated as R134a drop-in replacements, and the results are discussed. There is no perfect mixture found that is nonflammable, has low GWP, and has higher system efficiency and capacity than R134a in this study. Using R152a as a drop-in replacement of R134a can increase the system efficiency and capacity, but R152a is flammable. By adding R134a or R227ea to R152a can reduce the flammability of the mixture. R152a/R134a, R152a/R1234yf, and R32/R152a have higher COP and capacity than R134a, but they are not safe or environmental friendly enough. The mixtures for replacing R134a as drop-in alternatives with low Global Warming Potential (less than 150 or 700), nonflammable or slightly flammable are listed and discussed. The method developed in this study can be extended to evaluate alternatives for replacing other working fluids in any thermal application that will be restricted.
LOW-GWP REFRIGERANTS FOR MEDIUM AND HIGH-PRESSURE APPLICATIONS

Abstract:The merits of an alternative refrigerant are established based on many attributes including environmental acceptance, chemical stability in the refrigeration system, low toxicity, flammability, efficiency and volumetric capacity. In an earlier work, these criteria were used to screen a comprehensive database to search for refrigerants with low global warming potentials (GWP). The present paper summarizes the screening process and presents the performance of the 'best' replacement fluids for small and medium-sized air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration applications. In addition to considering cycle calculations based only on thermodynamic properties, a simulation model that included transport properties and optimized heat exchangers was used to assess the performance potentials of the candidate fluids. The need for this more detailed modeling approach is demonstrated for systems relying on forced-convection evaporation and condensation. The study shows that the low-GWP refrigerant options are very limited, particularly for fluids with volumetric capacities similar to those of R 410A or R-404A. The identified fluids with good COP and low toxicity are at least mildly flammable. Refrigerant blends can be used to increase flexibility in choosing tradeoffs between COP, volumetric capacity, flammability, and GWP. The probability of finding 'ideal', better-performing low-GWP fluids is minimal.

Abstract:The leakage and direct emission of high GWP HFC refrigerants in refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems increase the greenhouse effect, which pose huge threats to the ecological environment and the human health. Meanwhile, some alternative refrigerants with excellent environmental performance have different degrees of flammability. When the flammable refrigerants catastrophically leak from the refrigeration system into a limited space, it is easy to cause an explosion accident, the safety of people and property in the space is greatly threatened. In addition, the operating conditions of refrigeration systems, thermophysical properties of the refrigerants, obstacles and ventilation conditions of the space have a great impact on the process of refrigerant leakage and diffusion, the explosion risks formed in the external space have certain differences. To promote the security application of the alternative refrigerants, the leakage, diffusion, and distribution characteristics of the refrigerants from both theoretical and experimental aspects were reviewed in this work. The potential causes of leakages and common types of leakage holes in refrigeration systems were summarized, and the advantages and disadvantages of the existing leakage and diffusion theoretical models were concluded. The impact of the micro-sized leakage of the refrigerant on the internal of the system was discussed. The diffusion and distribution of the refrigerants in the external space after they catastrophically leaked from different types of systems were analyzed, and the influence of different parameters on the refrigerant distribution and the explosion risk based on the catastrophic leakage was also presented. The future work was prospected. The review is expected to provide a valuable reference for the safety risk assessment of the flammable refrigerants.
Hfc161 And Its Mixtures As Alternative Refrigerants

Abstract:HFC161 is an environmentally friendly refrigerant which is not destructive to the ozone layer and has a very low global warming potential. It has a high cooling capacity and an excellent energy efficiency, offering tangible economic and social benefits. But this refrigerant is flammable if used alone. Refrigerant mixtures with HFC161 are considered to be new and promising alternative refrigerants. We proposed and studied a series of refrigerant mixtures of HFC161. In this paper, we will report vapor pressure and P-V-T behavior of pure HFC161, vapor-tiquid equilibrium of HFC161 mixtures, cycle performance of the refrigerant mixtures and some results of the flammable behaviors of the new refrigerant mixtures. The studies show that the proposed new mixtures have great potential to be as excellent refrigerants. But there are still some key technology barriers to be surmounted before using such refrigerants, such as refrigerant-lubricant compatibility, materials compatibility and other issues.

Abstract:Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and so-called hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) are used as refrigerants in air conditioning, refrigeration, chillers, heat pumps and devices for dehumidification and drying. However, many HFCs, including R-134a and R-125, have a high global warming potential and some of the HFCs and HFOs degrade atmospherically and form persistent degradation products. Thus, there is an urgent need to replace fluorinated refrigerants with non-fluorinated working fluids to avoid direct emissions due to leakage, incorrect loading or removal. It is important, however, also to select refrigerants with high efficiencies to avoid indirect CO2 emissions due to a (too) high energy consumption during the use phase. The present study investigates the available non-fluorinated alternatives to fluorinated refrigerants and shows that a transition to non-fluorinated refrigerants, in general, is possible and has happened in many sectors already. Technically, there are only slight barriers to overcome to replace fluorinated refrigerants in almost all newly developed systems conforming to existing standards. Additionally, we show that alternatives are available even for some use cases for which derogations have been proposed in the PFAS restriction proposal and suggest making these derogations more specific to support bringing the use of non-fluorinated refrigerants into practice.

Abstract:Abstract R404A refrigerant is one of the most widely used hydrofluorocarbons in the commercial refrigeration industry for low and medium temperatures. However, this refrigerant contributes negatively to the environment due to its high global warming potential (GWP = 3943), and for several years, it has been labeled as one of the refrigerants that should be phased out. The present study theoretically evaluates low-GWP refrigerants as a replacement alternative to R404A, including R407H, R442A, R449A, R454A, R454C, R455A, R459B, and R465A. The analysis focuses on the comparison between relative differences in the volumetric flow in the compressor suction and the coefficient of performance for four configurations of the vapor compression cycle, such as the basic cycle, the cycle with an internal heat exchanger, the cycle with direct injection, and the cycle with a sub-cooler. According to the proposed operating conditions of evaporation temperature (−10 °C and −40 °C) and condensation temperature (40 °C and 55 °C), R454A could be the best long-term replacement option for its low GWP, energy performance, and direct fit for any configuration. R459B could also be considered a viable option, but with certain design modifications. On the contrary, the refrigerants R465A, R455A, and R454C would be discarded because they present a greater non-adaptation to the compressor in each configuration analyzed.

Future refrigerants with low global warming potential for residential air conditioning system: a thermodynamic analysis and MCDM tool optimization

Abstract:Increasing CO2 emission due to the practicing of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant like R22 in split air conditioning (AC) units needs the best substitute to match with environment and safety protocols along with good energy efficiency. In this study, 14 alternative refrigerants have been chosen to replace R22 in a 1.5 TR capacity of split AC from the existing studies. The performance of each refrigerant has been analysed thermodynamically and compared their results with R22 by accounting for discharge temperature, power consumption, coefficient of performance (COP), total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) index, and life-time cost. Overall from this theoretical analysis, it was observed that the best refrigerant for each considered measure is not unique; for example, R290 was best in terms of refrigerant charge and discharge pressure, while R444B was chosen to be superior in terms of COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Therefore, a multi-criteria decision-making methodology tool-based optimization has been carried out for selecting a single superior refrigerant for the future by considering thermal properties, COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Results of the evaluation based on the distance from average solution envisage R290 and R1123 as superior and worst choices to replace R22.

Abstract:From solar, geothermal and waste energy, ultra-low-grade heat of 45-60 degrees C is large in scale, and is still interesting challenges in converting into useful refrigeration of 7 degrees C. In this study, a novel cascade refrigeration system was developed to utilize 45-60 degrees C heat. It is composed of a novel two-stage vapor absorption refrigeration (VAR) subsystem with LiBr/H2O working pairs and a conventional vapor compression refrigeration (VCR) subsystem. The VCR subsystem employs potential R1234yf and R1234ze(E) refrigerants. The novel VAR subsystem operates by utilizing ultra-low-grade heat of renewable energy and recycling condensing heat of the VCR subsystem. Based on thermodynamic models of the novel system, its operating mechanism was theoretically investigated and discussed. The results indicate that the novel cascade system can effectively refrigerate by utilizing 45-60 degrees C ultra-low-grade heat. Its operation is mainly determined by the novel VAR subsystem. There are optimal T-m and T-g1 to maximize its performance. T-g2 has a greater impact on the optimal T-m and little effects on the optimal T-g1. Furthermore, it implies that an available temperature span could be obviously enlarged from 90 degrees C down to 45 degrees C. And, progress of utilizing ultra-low-grade heat of renewable energy could be promoted, beneficially. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The development of alternative refrigerants with low global warming potentials (GWP) has become a trend in response to the increasing demands for environment protection. R1234ze(E) and R290 have extremely low GWP values and are potential substitutes. However, their flammability limits their applications under hightemperature conditions. In this study, R134a was experimentally investigated for its flame-retardant effect on R1234ze(E) and R290 refrigerants at 60 degree celsius. The flammability ranges of pure flammable refrigerants were measured, and the variations in the flammability limits of binary mixtures, namely, R134a/R1234ze(E) and R134a/R290, formed at different concentrations of R134a, were explored. The critical explosion suppression ratios for R134a/R1234ze(E) and R134a/R290 were 0.315 and 17.3, respectively. Theoretical predictions were made to study the flammability limit range of the ternary refrigerant mixture R1234ze(E)/R290/R134a, revealing a very narrow non-flammable range, and experimental validation confirmed the accuracy of this prediction. This was primarily due to the poor flame-retardant effect of R134a on R290, which hindered effective synergy formation. This study provided important combustion safety data for R1234ze(E) and R290 mixed refrigerants under high -temperature conditions, and laid an experimental foundation for the future development of new low-GWP mixed refrigerants.

Abstract:An experimental apparatus for testing the explosion limits of flammable refrigerants was established following the standard of American Society for Testing Materials(ASTM) E681-01.Factors affecting the explosion limits of refrigerants were analyzed.Experimental results show that the physical characteristics of HFC-161/125/32 are similar to those of HCFC-22,its ozone depleting potential(ODP) is zero,and its global warming potential(GWP) is smaller than that of HCFC-22,therefore the new refrigerant HFC-161/125/32 can be considered as a promising alternative refrigerant to HCFC-22.The explosion limits of the flammable binary refrigerants of HFC-161/125/32 systems were tested.Based on the experimental data,the critical flammability line of the mixtures HFC-161/125/32 was plotted.Analysis result shows the importance of explosion limits to the safety of flammable refrigerants in manufacture and application.

Abstract:<p>High global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants for refrigeration and heat pump systems or organic Rankine cycle systems are being phased out because of their impact on climate change, such as R134a, R410A and R404A. So it is urgent to find the refrigerants with excellent environmental protection performance. Firstly, nearly 40 alternative refrigerants, including pure refrigerants and mixed refrigerants, are classified according to their environmental and safety characteristics. Secondly, the performance parameters of some typical alternatives, such as refrigerating capacity, COP, safety and environmental protection, are comprehensively compared. It can be concluded that R513a and R466A have good comprehensive performance as alternative refrigerants of R134a and R410A respectively, while those alternatives to R404A have both advantages and disadvantages. The application and technical characteristics of R32, some typical HFOs, natural refrigerants and mixtures are summarized and analyzed. In addition, our group has carried out experimental and theoretical research on the flammability of low GWP and flammable refrigerants such as R1234yf, R161, R290, R600a and R1150, and found that hydrocarbons are more difficult to be inhibited than halogenated hydrocarbons. Finally, a new research idea on the risk of refrigerant explosion is put forward, which can cover the refrigerant leakage, combustion and risk aversion.</p>

Abstract:CFCs and HCFCs, widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, have been or will be phased out according to the revisions of the Montreal Protocol because they deplete the ozone layer. Many substitutes have been proposed, but no one has perfectly replaced the CFC and HCFC refrigerants. New generation alternatives are being investigated worldwide. According to the industrial and environmental requirements, many factors should be considered in the screening and evaluation of refrigerant alternatives. A new method is proposed using the soft algebra method—fuzzy multiple evaluation. The weights for different factors are determined mathematically and criteria values for all the objects are made dimensionless to quantitatively compare the different alternatives. A new long-term drop-in mixture alternative THR02 is developed and evaluated in a series of theoretical and experimental evaluations. THR02 is proved to be an environment-friendly, nontoxic, inflammable, drop-in alternative to CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The thermal performance of the compressors and refrigerators with THR02 as a drop-in is equal to or higher than with CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The compressor and refrigerator using THR02 perform reliably after long-period running.
Thermodynamic Investigation on Low GWP Drop‐in Alternatives to HFC‐245fa in Ejector Refrigeration Cycle for Air Condition Application

Abstract:The ejector refrigeration cycle (ERC) with HFC-245fa can achieve high efficiency and reliability for air conditioning applications. However, because of its high global warming potential (GWP), HFC-245fa needed to be phased out according to recent relative regulations. In this study, four promising alternatives to HFC-245fa were investigated and evaluated, including HC-600, HCFO-1233zd(E), HFO-1336mzz(Z), and HCFO-1224 yd(Z). Besides their low GWP, these alternatives also have similar vapor pressure curves to HFC-245fa, which represents a possibility for refrigerant drop-in replacement in ERC. Thermodynamic real gas modeling of the ERC was adopted in this study for more accurate results, and a critical performance evaluation and comparison with those candidates in ERC were carried out. The results indicate that HCFO-1233zd(E) and HCFO-1224 yd(Z) are outstanding candidates for ERC according to the higher coefficient of performance, entrainment ratio, exergy efficiency, and lower pump power consumption, and the COP relative differences of these two refrigerants would reach 5.5% and 4.6%. HFO-1336mzz(Z) consumes 33% less power at the pump than HFC-245fa under the same conditions and refrigeration capacity. Minimal pump power consumption is its advantage. Although HC-600 is prominent, with the largest coefficient of performance and entrainment ratio, its flammability is not conducive to its popularization. Machine learning is available to predict the performance of ejectors employing different refrigerants. This paper helps to properly select refrigerants for ERC and to pre-evaluate the refrigerants' application under different working conditions.

Abstract:According to the EU F-gas Regulation, the phase-out of the high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants (with higher than 150 GWP value) had been established. The most currently existing household and commercial refrigerators and automobile air conditioners applications based on single-stage vapour compression systems operate with R134a as working fluid. The present paper aims, to review and evaluate the performance of a set of eco-friendly alternatives refrigerants to replace R134a, without change or with minor modifications in refrigeration equipment. The theoretical and experimental studies performed in this field of research were reviewed for this objective. These alternative refrigerants are some of HFCs, HFOs and HCs and their mixtures, which are expected to be an excellent candidates in many refrigeration applications. There are Many replacement possibilities had been proposed viz. drop-in replacement, retrofit refrigerant, and new systems. The results exhibited that the most suitable refrigerants as R134a drop-in substitutes are R1234yf, R152a, R450A, and R513A. The pure R1234ze and its mixtures are not suitable drop-in replacements of R134a but can be a good alternative to R134a only in new refrigeration systems. In terms of hydrocarbon refrigerants R290, R600, and R600a could replace R134a with some modifications to existing refrigeration systems to overcome the flammability issue. We should be using certain HFC and HC mixtures with the lowest TEWI index.

Abstract:There is a widespread belief that the only viable refrigerants in most applications are new fluorocarbon chemicals. This trend will result in continued emissions of several hundred thousand tonnes of alien chemicals to the atmosphere each year, involving the potential risk of unforeseen environmental effects. A number of other options exist, or may be developed. By using substances that already have a natural role in the ecosystem, some uncertainty about the critical issue of our future environment can be avoided. By development and practical testing of a laboratory prototype it has been shown that carbon dioxide is an excellent refrigerant in car air-conditioners, solving completely all environmental problems associated with such systems. General use of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant may provide a number of advantages in the present situation, both from an environmental and practical point of view. It is the authors' considered opinion that the use of the old refrigerant carbon dioxide offers a key to the complete solution of the environmental problems in many areas of refrigeration usage.

Abstract:Climate change is an important environmental issue that is causing global temperatures to rise. The primary environmental targets are to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The refrigeration system is a major emitter of greenhouse gases because it uses refrigerants with a high global warming potential. Due to its excellent thermophysical properties, the R134a is the most commonly used refrigerant in refrigeration systems; however, its high GWP will need to be disposed of earlier. To achieve global environmental objectives, conventional refrigerants need to be replaced with environmentally friendly and energy-efficient refrigerants. In the present work, a mathematical simulation has been carried out to check the performance of low-GWP refrigerant mixtures as environmentally friendly alternatives for R134a in a low-temperature system. In this study, a 190-L domestic refrigerator has been considered a low-temperature system. This simulation was performed using the MATLAB software, and the REFPROP database was used to obtain thermophysical properties of the refrigerants. The results showed that the COP of HFO mixtures decreased by 4-20% compared to R134a. The exergy efficiency of the R1234ze/R134a mixture improves by 4 to 16% as compared to the other mixtures and its performance is very similar to the R134a. Due to the environmentally friendly properties and flammability aspects, R1234ze/R134a (90/10) could be a good substitute for R134a in lower temperature applications and to satisfy the Montreal and Kyoto Protocol expectations.

Abstract:Refrigeration and Air conditioning technology plays a significant role to pro-mote the civilization progress in human society.But the heavy use of CFCs and HCFCs as refrigerant destroys the ozone layer,as well as increasing global warming.HFCs,the al-ternative to CFCs and HCFCs,have 0 ODP,while most of which have higher GWP.CFCs have been phased out,HCFCs and HFCs are being or will be phased-down.Refrigerant with 0 ODP and lower GWP would be the only choice in the future.This kind of alterna-tives is environmental friendly;however,safety issues like flammablility,toxicity and high pressure are still exsiting,which causes concerns.In fact,these refrigerants have been used in RAC sector for a long time.Long-term operation experience,lots of scien-tific researches and risk evaluations carried out at home and abroad show that if safety measures taken strictly,the alternatives could be used safely.
A domestic refrigerator's potential of using hydrocarbon blends as refrigerants

Abstract:Because of environmental concerns, HFCs that were once widely used in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems may soon be phased out. The main reason for the phase-out of HFCs is that of their high potential for global warming (GWP). Consequently, there is now a greater need for appropriate, greener alternatives. In the recent years, significant initiatives are taken toward hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants or other eco-friendly refrigerants to ensure the sustainability of the environment. In this research work, an experimental examination has been made using green hydrocarbon refrigerants, i.e., a mixture of R600a and R290 in a ratio 55:45, as a substitute to R134a in a 150 L domestic refrigerator. Continuous running experiments have been conducted at various ambient temperatures (24, 29, 34, 39, and 43 degrees Celsius), whereas cycling running (ON/OFF) experiments were piloted solely at 29 degrees Celsius. The results revealed that hydrocarbon combination has lowered the energy consumption by 13.8% with 2.85–4.6% increase in COP. Compared to R134a discharge temperature, the exit temperature of green mixture hydrocarbons is found to be 6–14 K lower. Overall, the aforementioned hydrocarbon refrigerant mixture has proven to be the greatest long-term solution for phasing out R134a.

Abstract:With the mandate of Montreal Protocol banning ozone depleting substances, and Kyoto Protocol later on curtailing the use of substances which contribute to global warming, conventional refrigerants are to be replaced by environment-friendly working fluids. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are being substituted by hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), hydrofluorooelifins (HFOs), and a variety of mixtures. In view of the global warming potential of these newly synthesized refrigerants, the recent trend is to go back to the originally used natural fluids such as ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, water vapour, etc. In this article, various issues related to this changeover of refrigerants being used in vapour compression refrigeration systems are discussed.
