Abstract:Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editor's attention by a concerned reader that the control GAPDH western blotting bands shown in Fig. 4H on p. 496 were strikingly similar to data that were submitted for publication in advance of this article in different form by different authors at different research institutes [Liu F, Bai C and Guo Z: The prognostic value of osteopontin in limited‑stage small cell lung cancer patients and its mechanism. Oncotarget 8: 70084‑70096, 2017]. A further independent investigation conducted in the Editorial Office revealed that other western blotting data were likely to have been shared in common, comparing between the two articles. Owing to the fact that the contentious data in the above article had already been submitted for publication prior to the submission of this article to Oncology Reports, the Editor has decided that this paper should be retracted from the Journal. After having been in contact with the authors, it was admitted that the authors Feng Chang, Jian-Na Liu and Jun-Xin Lin did not initially provide their agreement to be authors on this paper; otherwise, the rest of the authors accepted the decision to retract the paper. Abstract:Background/Aims: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression by repressing translation or cleaving RNA transcripts in a sequence-specific manner. Downregulated microRNAs and their roles in cancer development have attracted much attention. A growing body of evidence showed that microRNA-133a (miR-133a) has inhibitory effects on cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis of osteosarcoma. Methods: MiR-133a expression in human osteosarcoma cell lines and human normal osteoblastic cell line hFOB was investigated by real-time PCR (RT-PCR). The role of miR-133a in human osteosarcoma growth and invasion was assessed in cell lines in vitro and in vivo. Then, luciferase reporter assay validated IGF-1R as a downstream and functional target of miR-133a, and functional studies revealed that the anti-tumor effect of miR-133a was probably due to targeting and repressing of IGF-1R expression. Results: MiR-133a was lower expressed in human osteosarcoma cell lines than human normal osteoblastic cell line hFOB and its effect on inhibiting proliferation, invasion and metastasis is mediated by its direct interaction with the IGF-1R. Furthermore, the tumour-suppressive function of miR-133a probably contributed to inhibiting the activation AKT and ERK signaling pathway. Conclusion: MiR-133a suppresses osteosarcoma progression and metastasis by targeting IGF-1R in human osteosarcoma cells, providing a novel candidate prognostic factor and a potential anti-metastasis therapeutic target in osteosarcoma.

Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, 21(2), 315-323. https://doi.org/10.1111/jcmm.12966 The above article, published online on 25 October 2016 in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com), has been retracted by agreement between the journal Editor-in-Chief, Stefan Constantinescu; The Foundation for Cellular and Molecular Medicine and John Wiley and Sons Ltd. The retraction has been agreed upon following an investigation into concerns raised by a third party, which revealed inappropriate duplications of image panels (Figures 2D, 3, 4G, 6A and F) within the article and between this and other articles that were previously published or published shortly after in a different scientific context. The authors were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation and the provided raw data could not explain the identified issues, which has led the editors to lose confidence in the data presented. Therefore, the editors consider the conclusions substantially compromised and are retracting the paper. The co-author, J. Shen stated that they were not involved in this research and had no knowledge about its publication, and their correspondence email address was added without their consent. The authors, including Z. Li who submitted the manuscript, were informed of the decision to retract but did not respond to the retraction or the retraction wording.

Abstract:Objective: This study was conducted to dissect the role and potential mechanism of microRNA (miR)-455-3p on osteosarcoma (OS) development.Methods: miR-455-3p and HSF1 expression in OS tissues were detected by RT-qPCR and western blot. Later, gainand loss-of-function assays were implemented in OS cells U-2OS and MNNG. The expression of apoptosis-related genes was measured by RT-qPCR and western blot. MTT, Transwell, scratch test, and flow cytometry were utilized to test OS cell viability, invasion, migration, and apoptosis. The targeting relationship between miR-455-3p and HSF1 was assessed with a dual-luciferase reporter gene assay. The transplantation tumor experiment in nude mice was utilized for in vivo confirmation.Results: Downregulated miR-455-3p and upregulated HSF1 were displayed in OS tissues and cells. Mechanistically, miR-455-3p negatively targeted HSF1. MiR-455-3p inhibition or HSF1 overexpression increased MNNG and U-2OS cell proliferative, invasive, and migrating capabilities, while diminishing U-2OS cell apoptosis. Moreover, HSF1 overexpression negated the impacts of miR-455-3p upregulation on OS cell proliferative, invasive, migrating, and apoptotic abilities. Likewise, overexpressing miR-455-3p curtailed the growth of transplanted OS tumors through HSF1 repression.Conclusion: MiR-455-3p inhibits the development of OS cells by downregulating HSF1, highlighting the possibility of miR-455-3p as an innovative indicator of prognosis and a therapeutic target for OS.& COPY; 2022 The Japanese Orthopaedic Association.
