Abstract:We consider a special case of the generalized minimum spanning tree problem (GMST) and the generalized travelling salesman problem (GTSP) where we are given a set of points inside the integer grid (in Euclidean plane) where each grid cell is $1 \times 1$. In the MST version of the problem, the goal is to find a minimum tree that contains exactly one point from each non-empty grid cell (cluster). Similarly, in the TSP version of the problem, the goal is to find a minimum weight cycle containing one point from each non-empty grid cell. We give a $(1+4\sqrt{2}+\epsilon)$ and $(1.5+8\sqrt{2}+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm for these two problems in the described setting, respectively. Our motivation is based on the problem posed in [7] for a constant approximation algorithm. The authors designed a PTAS for the more special case of the GMST where non-empty cells are connected end dense enough. However, their algorithm heavily relies on this connectivity restriction and is unpractical. Our results develop the topic further.

Abstract:In this paper, the minimum spanning tree problem is investigated on the graph with fuzzy edge weights. The notion of fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree is presented based on the credibility measure, and then the solutions of the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem are discussed under different assumptions. First, we respectively, assume that all the edge weights are triangular fuzzy numbers and trapezoidal fuzzy numbers and prove that the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem can be transformed to a classical problem on a crisp graph in these two cases, which can be solved by classical algorithms such as the Kruskal algorithm and the Prim algorithm in polynomial time. Subsequently, as for the case that the edge weights are general fuzzy numbers, a fuzzy simulation-based genetic algorithm using Prufer number representation is designed for solving the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem. Some numerical examples are also provided for illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Abstract:We consider the geometric version of the well-known Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem introduced in 2015 by Bhattacharya et al. that is called the Euclidean Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem in Grid Clusters (EGTSP-GC). They proved the intractability of the problem and proposed first polynomial time algorithms with fixed approximation factors. The extension of these results in the field of constructing the polynomial time approximation schemes (PTAS) and the description of non-trivial polynomial time solvable subclasses for the EGTSP-GC appear to be relevant in the light of the classic C. Papadimitriou result on the intractability of the Euclidean TSP and recent inapproximability results for the Traveling Salesman Problem with Neighborhoods (TSPN) in the case of discrete neighborhoods. Abstract:We study a discrete version of a geometric stable marriage problem originally proposed in a continuous setting by Hoffman, Holroyd, and Peres, in which points in the plane are stably matched to cluster centers, as prioritized by their distances, so that each cluster center is apportioned a set of points of equal area. We show that, for a discretization of the problem to an $n\times n$ grid of pixels with $k$ centers, the problem can be solved in time $O(n^2 \log^5 n)$, and we experiment with two slower but more practical algorithms and a hybrid method that switches from one of these algorithms to the other to gain greater efficiency than either algorithm alone. We also show how to combine geometric stable matchings with a $k$-means clustering algorithm, so as to provide a geometric political-districting algorithm that views distance in economic terms, and we experiment with weighted versions of stable $k$-means in order to improve the connectivity of the resulting clusters.

Abstract:Minimum spanning trees (MSTs) provide a convenient representation of datasets in numerous pattern recognition activities. Moreover, they are relatively fast to compute. In this paper, we quantify the extent to which they are meaningful in low-dimensional partitional data clustering tasks. By identifying the upper bounds for the agreement between the best (oracle) algorithm and the expert labels from a large battery of benchmark data, we discover that MST methods can be very competitive. Next, we review, study, extend, and generalise a few existing, state-of-the-art MST-based partitioning schemes. This leads to some new noteworthy approaches. Overall, the Genie and the information-theoretic methods often outperform the non-MST algorithms such as K-means, Gaussian mixtures, spectral clustering, Birch, density-based, and classical hierarchical agglomerative procedures. Nevertheless, we identify that there is still some room for improvement, and thus the development of novel algorithms is encouraged.

The new pattern we made has taken successful to better equilibrium the benefits of local and global when we employ the strategy of divide and conquer to optimize solutions on problem. Under new model, we let the course of clustering become more transparent with many details, so that the whole solution may be featured of much reasonable, flexibility, efficiency and approach to reveal or reflect the reality. There are some important methods and avenues as fruits derived from discussions or trial which can be broad usefulness in the fields of graphic analysis, data mining, k-means clustering problem and so forth.

Abstract:We prove that for every planar graph $X$ of treedepth $h$, there exists a positive integer $c$ such that for every $X$-minor-free graph $G$, there exists a graph $H$ of treewidth at most $f(h)$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of $H\boxtimes K_c$. This is a qualitative strengthening of the Grid-Minor Theorem of Robertson and Seymour (JCTB 1986), and treedepth is the optimal parameter in such a result. As an example application, we use this result to improve the upper bound for weak coloring numbers of graphs excluding a fixed graph as a minor.

Abstract:Choi et. al (2011) introduced a minimum spanning tree (MST)-based method called CLGrouping, for constructing tree-structured probabilistic graphical models, a statistical framework that is commonly used for inferring phylogenetic trees. While CLGrouping works correctly if there is a unique MST, we observe an indeterminacy in the method in the case that there are multiple MSTs. In this work we remove this indeterminacy by introducing so-called vertex-ranked MSTs. We note that the effectiveness of CLGrouping is inversely related to the number of leaves in the MST. This motivates the problem of finding a vertex-ranked MST with the minimum number of leaves (MLVRMST). We provide a polynomial time algorithm for the MLVRMST problem, and prove its correctness for graphs whose edges are weighted with tree-additive distances.

Abstract:Clustering is a commonplace problem in many areas of data science, with applications in biology and bioinformatics, understanding chemical structure, image segmentation, building recommender systems, and many more fields. While there are many different clustering variants (based on given distance or graph structure, probability distributions, or data density), we consider here the problem of clustering nodes in a graph, motivated by the problem of aggregating discrete degrees of freedom in multigrid and domain decomposition methods for solving sparse linear systems. Specifically, we consider the challenge of forming balanced clusters in the graph of a sparse matrix for use in algebraic multigrid, although the algorithm has general applicability. Based on an extension of the Bellman-Ford algorithm, we generalize Lloyd's algorithm for partitioning subsets of Rn to balance the number of nodes in each cluster; this is accompanied by a rebalancing algorithm that reduces the overall energy in the system. The algorithm provides control over the number of clusters and leads to "well centered" partitions of the graph. Theoretical results are provided to establish linear complexity and numerical results in the context of algebraic multigrid highlight the benefits of improved clustering.

Abstract:Algorithms or target functions for graph clustering rarely admit quality guarantees or optimal results in general. Based on properties of minimum-cut trees, a clustering algorithm by Flake et al. does however yield such a provable guarantee, which ensures the quality of bottlenecks within the clustering. We show that the structure of minimum s-t-cuts in a graph allows for an efficient dynamic update of those clusterings, and present a dynamic graph clustering algorithm that maintains a clustering fulfilling this quality guarantee, and that effectively avoids changing the clustering. Experiments on real-world dynamic graphs complement our theoretical results.

Abstract:Computing a Euclidean minimum spanning tree of a set of points is a seminal problem in computational geometry and geometric graph theory. We combine it with another classical problem in graph drawing, namely computing a monotone geometric representation of a given graph. More formally, given a finite set $S$ of points in the plane and a finite set $\cal D$ of directions, a geometric spanning tree $T$ with vertex set $S$ is ${\cal D}$-monotone if, for every pair $\{u,v\}$ of vertices of $T$, there exists a direction $d \in \cal D$ for which the unique path from $u$ to $v$ in $T$ is monotone with respect to $d$. We provide a characterization of ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning trees. Based on it, we show that a ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree of minimum length can be computed in polynomial time if the number $k=|{\cal D}|$ of directions is fixed, both when (i) the set ${\cal D}$ of directions is prescribed and when (ii) the objective is to find a minimum-length ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree over all sets ${\cal D}$ of $k$ directions. For $k = 2$, we describe algorithms that are much faster than those for the general case. Furthermore, in contrast to the classical Euclidean minimum spanning tree, whose vertex degree is at most six, we show that for every even integer $k$, there exists a point set $S_k$ and a set $\cal D$ of $k$ directions such that any minimum-length $\cal D$-monotone spanning tree of $S_k$ has maximum vertex degree $2k$.

Abstract:Most of the existing clustering methods are based on a single granularity of information, such as the distance and density of each data. This most fine-grained based approach is usually inefficient and susceptible to noise. Therefore, we propose a clustering algorithm that combines multi-granularity Granular-Ball and minimum spanning tree (MST). We construct coarsegrained granular-balls, and then use granular-balls and MST to implement the clustering method based on "large-scale priority", which can greatly avoid the influence of outliers and accelerate the construction process of MST. Experimental results on several data sets demonstrate the power of the algorithm. Abstract:Motivated by recent developments regarding the product structure of planar graphs, we study relationships between treewidth, grid minors, and graph products. We show that the Cartesian product of any two connected $n$-vertex graphs contains an $\Omega(\sqrt{n})\times\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ grid minor. This result is tight: The lexicographic product (which includes the Cartesian product as a subgraph) of a star and any $n$-vertex tree has no $\omega(\sqrt{n})\times\omega(\sqrt{n})$ grid minor.

Minimum Spanning Trees with Bounded Degrees of Vertices in a Specified Stable Set

Abstract:Given a graph $G$ and sets $\{\alpha_v~|~v \in V(G)\}$ and $\{\beta_v~|~v \in V(G)\}$ of non-negative integers, it is known that the decision problem whether $G$ contains a spanning tree $T$ such that $\alpha_v \le d_T (v) \le \beta_v $ for all $v \in V(G)$ is $NP$-complete. In this article, we relax the problem by demanding that the degree restrictions apply to vertices $v\in U$ only, where $U$ is a stable set of $G$. In this case, the problem becomes tractable. A. Frank presented a result characterizing the positive instances of that relaxed problem. Using matroid intersection developed by J. Edmonds, we give a new and short proof of Frank's result and show that if $U$ is stable and the edges of $G$ are weighted by arbitrary real numbers, then even a minimum-cost tree $T$ with $\alpha_v \le d_T (v) \le \beta_v $ for all $v \in U$ can be found in polynomial time if such a tree exists.

Abstract:Clustering analysis is an unsupervised learning method, which has applications across many fields such as pattern recognition, machine learning, information security, and image segmentation. The density-based method, as one of the various clustering algorithms, has achieved good performance. However, it works poor in dealing with multidensity and complex-shaped datasets. Moreover, the result of this method depends heavily on the parameters we input. Thus, we propose a novel clustering algorithm (called the MST-DC) in this paper, which is based on the density core. Firstly, we employ the reverse nearest neighbors to extract core objects. Secondly, we use the minimum spanning tree algorithm to cluster the core objects. Finally, the remaining objects are assigned to the cluster to which their nearest core object belongs. The experimental results on several synthetic and real-world datasets show the superiority of the MST-DC to Kmeans, DBSCAN, DPC, DCore, SNNDPC, and LDP-MST.

Abstract:Existing clustering methods rely on prior knowledge of the data set to cluster it, so the quality of the clustering effect is entirely dependent on the user’s familiarity with the data set. Furthermore, when extracting the information from a data set, existing clustering algorithms frequently ignore the geometric distribution of data, making it difficult to identify data objects in their entirety and detect local spatial structures. To address these issues, this paper proposes a spatial subcluster clustering method by grid-connection, which automatically obtains subclusters by iterative local labeling without requiring a priori knowledge of the data set and efficiently extracts correlations between data by establishing relationships between subclusters by grid-connecting. Experiments are conducted to validate the proposed algorithm against existing state-of-the-art algorithms on 9 synthetic and 4 real data sets. The results show SSCG can efficiently utilize the information on the grid space without relying on a priori knowledge, and the overall performance is better than the existing advanced algorithms.

Abstract:We describe the structure of the graphs with the smallest average distance and the largest average clustering given their order and size. There is usually a unique graph with the largest average clustering, which at the same time has the smallest possible average distance. In contrast, there are many graphs with the same minimum average distance, ignoring their average clustering. The form of these graphs is shown with analytical arguments. Finally, we measure the sensitivity to rewiring of this architecture with respect to the clustering coefficient, and we devise a method to make these networks more robust with respect to vertex removal.
