Abstract:A theorem of Frieze from 1985 asserts that the total weight of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph $K_n$ whose edges get independent weights from the distribution $UNIFORM[0,1]$ converges to Apéry's constant in probability, as $n\to\infty$. We generalize this result to sequences of graphs $G_n$ that converge to a graphon $W$. Further, we allow the weights of the edges to be drawn from different distributions (subject to moderate conditions). The limiting total weight $\kappa(W)$ of the minimum spanning tree is expressed in terms of a certain branching process defined on $W$, which was studied previously by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan in connection with the giant component in inhomogeneous random graphs.

Abstract:We study the noise sensitivity of the minimum spanning tree (MST) of the $n$-vertex complete graph when edges are assigned independent random weights. It is known that when the graph distance is rescaled by $n^{1/3}$ and vertices are given a uniform measure, the MST converges in distribution in the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov (GHP) topology. We prove that if the weight of each edge is resampled independently with probability $\varepsilon\gg n^{-1/3}$, then the pair of rescaled minimum spanning trees -- before and after the noise -- converges in distribution to independent random spaces. Conversely, if $\varepsilon\ll n^{-1/3}$, the GHP distance between the rescaled trees goes to $0$ in probability. This implies the noise sensitivity and stability for every property of the MST that corresponds to a continuity set of the random limit. The noise threshold of $n^{-1/3}$ coincides with the critical window of the Erdős-Rényi random graphs. In fact, these results follow from an analog theorem we prove regarding the minimum spanning forest of critical random graphs.

Minimum Spanning Trees with Bounded Degrees of Vertices in a Specified Stable Set

Abstract:Given a graph $G$ and sets $\{\alpha_v~|~v \in V(G)\}$ and $\{\beta_v~|~v \in V(G)\}$ of non-negative integers, it is known that the decision problem whether $G$ contains a spanning tree $T$ such that $\alpha_v \le d_T (v) \le \beta_v $ for all $v \in V(G)$ is $NP$-complete. In this article, we relax the problem by demanding that the degree restrictions apply to vertices $v\in U$ only, where $U$ is a stable set of $G$. In this case, the problem becomes tractable. A. Frank presented a result characterizing the positive instances of that relaxed problem. Using matroid intersection developed by J. Edmonds, we give a new and short proof of Frank's result and show that if $U$ is stable and the edges of $G$ are weighted by arbitrary real numbers, then even a minimum-cost tree $T$ with $\alpha_v \le d_T (v) \le \beta_v $ for all $v \in U$ can be found in polynomial time if such a tree exists.

Abstract:A well-known open problem on the behavior of optimal paths in random graphs in the strong disorder regime, formulated by statistical physicists, and supported by a large amount of numerical evidence over the last decade (Braunstein et al. in Phys Rev Lett 91(16):168701, 2003; Braunstein et al. in Int J Bifurc Chaos 17(07):2215–2255, 2007; Chen et al. in Phys Rev Lett 96(6):068702, 2006; Wu et al. in Phys Rev Lett 96(14):148702, 2006) is as follows: for a large class of random graph models with degree exponent , distances in the minimal spanning tree (MST) on the giant component in the supercritical regime scale like . The aim of this paper is to make progress towards a proof of this conjecture. We consider a supercritical inhomogeneous random graph model with degree exponent that is closely related to Aldous's multiplicative coalescent, and show that the MST constructed by assigning i.i.d. continuous weights to the edges in its giant component, endowed with the tree distance scaled by , converges in distribution with respect to the Gromov–Hausdorff topology to a random compact real tree. Further, almost surely, every point in this limiting space either has degree one (leaf), or two, or infinity (hub), both the set of leaves and the set of hubs are dense in this space, and the Minkowski dimension of this space equals . The multiplicative coalescent, in an asymptotic sense, describes the evolution of the component sizes of various near-critical random graph processes. We expect the limiting spaces in this paper to be the candidates for the scaling limit of the MST constructed for a wide array of other heavy-tailed random graph models.

Abstract:Motivated by recent developments regarding the product structure of planar graphs, we study relationships between treewidth, grid minors, and graph products. We show that the Cartesian product of any two connected $n$-vertex graphs contains an $\Omega(\sqrt{n})\times\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ grid minor. This result is tight: The lexicographic product (which includes the Cartesian product as a subgraph) of a star and any $n$-vertex tree has no $\omega(\sqrt{n})\times\omega(\sqrt{n})$ grid minor.

Abstract:Consider~$n$ nodes~$\{X_i\}_{1 \leq i \leq n}$ independently distributed in the unit square~$S,$ each according to a distribution~$f$ and let~$K_n$ be the complete graph formed by joining each pair of nodes by a straight line segment. For every edge~$e$ in~$K_n$ we associate a weight~$w(e)$ that may depend on the \emph{individual locations} of the endvertices of~$e.$ Denoting~$MST_n$ to be the minimum weight of a spanning tree of~$K_n$ and assuming an equivalence condition on the weight function~$w(.),$ we prove that~$MST_n$ appropriately scaled and centred converges to zero a.s.\ and in mean as~$n \rightarrow \infty.$ We also obtain upper and lower bound deviation estimates for~$MST_n.$

Stochastic Minimum Spanning Trees with a Single Sample

Abstract:We consider the minimum spanning tree problem in a setting where the edge weights are stochastic from unknown distributions, and the only available information is a single sample of each edge's weight distribution. In this setting, we analyze the expected performance of the algorithm that outputs a minimum spanning tree for the sampled weights. We compare to the optimal solution when the distributions are known. For every graph with weights that are exponentially distributed, we show that the sampling based algorithm has a performance guarantee that is equal to the size of the largest bond in the graph. Furthermore, we show that for every graph this performance guarantee is tight. The proof is based on two separate inductive arguments via edge contractions, which can be interpreted as reducing the spanning tree problem to a stochastic item selection problem. We also generalize these results to arbitrary matroids, where the performance guarantee is equal to the size of the largest co-circuit of the matroid.

Abstract:Assign i.i.d. standard exponential edge weights to the edges of the complete graph K_n, and let M_n be the resulting minimum spanning tree. We show that M_n converges in the local weak sense (also called Aldous-Steele or Benjamini-Schramm convergence), to a random infinite tree M. The tree M may be viewed as the component containing the root in the wired minimum spanning forest of the Poisson-weighted infinite tree (PWIT). We describe a Markov process construction of M starting from the invasion percolation cluster on the PWIT. We then show that M has cubic volume growth, up to lower order fluctuations for which we provide explicit bounds. Our volume growth estimates confirm recent predictions from the physics literature, and contrast with the behaviour of invasion percolation on the PWIT and on regular trees, which exhibit quadratic volume growth.

Abstract:For any edge weight distribution, we consider the uniform spanning tree (UST) on finite graphs with i.i.d. random edge weights. We show that, for bounded degree expander graphs and finite boxes of ${\mathbb Z}^d$, the diameter of the UST is of order $n^{1/2+o(1)}$ with high probability, where $n$ is the number of vertices.

Abstract:We introduce a new spanning tree model called the random spanning tree in random environment (RSTRE), which interpolates between the uniform spanning tree and the minimum spanning tree as the inverse temperature (disorder strength) $\beta$ varies. On the complete graph with $n$ vertices and i.i.d.\ uniform disorder variables on the edges, we identify: (1) a low disorder regime with $\beta \leq C n/\log n$, where the diameter of the random spanning tree is typically of order $n^{1/2}$, the same as for the uniform spanning tree; (2) a high disorder regime with $\beta \geq n^{4/3} \log n$, where the diameter is typically of order $n^{1/3}$, the same as for the minimum spanning tree. We conjecture that for $\beta=n^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha \in (1, 4/3)$, the diameter is of order $n^{\gamma+o(1)}$ for some $\gamma=\gamma(\alpha)$ strictly between $1/2$ and $1/3$.

Combinatorial and Asymptotical Results on the Neighborhood Grid

Abstract:In various application fields, such as fluid-, cell-, or crowd-simulations, spatial data structures are very important. They answer nearest neighbor queries which are instrumental in performing necessary computations for, e.g., taking the next time step in the simulation. Correspondingly, various such data structures have been developed, one being the \emph{neighborhood grid}. In this paper, we consider combinatorial aspects of this data structure. Particularly, we show that an assumption on uniqueness, made in previous works, is not actually satisfied. We extend the notions of the neighborhood grid to arbitrary grid sizes and dimensions and provide two alternative, correct versions of the proof that was broken by the dissatisfied assumption. Furthermore, we explore both the uniqueness of certain states of the data structure as well as when the number of these states is maximized. We provide a partial classification by using the hook-length formula for rectangular Young tableaux. Finally, we conjecture how to extend this to all 2-dimensional cases.

Sampling Balanced Forests of Grids in Polynomial Time

Abstract:We prove that a polynomial fraction of the set of $k$-component forests in the $m \times n$ grid graph have equal numbers of vertices in each component, for any constant $k$. This resolves a conjecture of Charikar, Liu, Liu, and Vuong, and establishes the first provably polynomial-time algorithm for (exactly or approximately) sampling balanced grid graph partitions according to the spanning tree distribution, which weights each $k$-partition according to the product, across its $k$ pieces, of the number of spanning trees of each piece. Our result follows from a careful analysis of the probability a uniformly random spanning tree of the grid can be cut into balanced pieces. Beyond grids, we show that for a broad family of lattice-like graphs, we achieve balance up to any multiplicative $(1 \pm \varepsilon)$ constant with constant probability, and up to an additive constant with polynomial probability. More generally, we show that, with constant probability, components derived from uniform spanning trees can approximate any given partition of a planar region specified by Jordan curves. These results imply polynomial time algorithms for sampling approximately balanced tree-weighted partitions for lattice-like graphs. Our results have applications to understanding political districtings, where there is an underlying graph of indivisible geographic units that must be partitioned into $k$ population-balanced connected subgraphs. In this setting, tree-weighted partitions have interesting geometric properties, and this has stimulated significant effort to develop methods to sample them.

Cluster-size decay in supercritical kernel-based spatial random graphs

Abstract:We consider a large class of spatially-embedded random graphs that includes among others long-range percolation, continuum scale-free percolation and the age-dependent random connection model. We assume that the model is supercritical: there is an infinite component. We identify the stretch-exponent $\zeta\in(0,1)$ of the decay of the cluster-size distribution. That is, with $|\mathcal{C}(0)|$ denoting the number of vertices in the component of the vertex at $0\in \mathbb{R}^d$, we prove \[ \mathbb{P}(k< |\mathcal{C}(0)|<\infty)=\exp\big(-\Theta(k^{\zeta})\big), \qquad \text{as }k\to\infty. \] The value of $\zeta$ undergoes several phase transitions with respect to three main model parameters: the Euclidean dimension $d$, the power-law tail exponent $\tau$ of the degree distribution and a long-range parameter $\alpha$ governing the presence of long edges in Euclidean space. In this paper we present the proof for the region in the phase diagram where the model is a generalization of continuum scale-free percolation and/or hyperbolic random graphs: $\zeta$ in this regime depends both on $\tau,\alpha$. We also prove that the second-largest component in a box of volume $n$ is of size $\Theta((\log n)^{1/\zeta})$ with high probability. We develop a deterministic algorithm, the cover expansion, as new methodology. This algorithm enables us to prevent too large components that may be de-localized or locally dense in space.

Abstract:Using probabilistic methods, we obtain grid-drawings of graphs without crossings with low volume and small aspect ratio. We show that every $D$-degenerate graph on $n$ vertices can be drawn in $[m]^3$ where $m^3 = O(D^2 n\log n)$. In particular, every graph of bounded maximum degree can be drawn in a grid with volume $O(n \log n)$.

Abstract:The minimum spanning tree (MST) is a combinatorial optimization problem: given a connected graph with a real weight ("cost") on each edge, find the spanning tree that minimizes the sum of the total cost of the occupied edges. We consider the random MST, in which the edge costs are (quenched) independent random variables. There is a strongly-disordered spin-glass model due to Newman and Stein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 2286 (1994)], which maps precisely onto the random MST. We study scaling properties of random MSTs using a relation between Kruskal's greedy algorithm for finding the MST, and bond percolation. We solve the random MST problem on the Bethe lattice (BL) with appropriate wired boundary conditions and calculate the fractal dimension D=6 of the connected components. Viewed as a mean-field theory, the result implies that on a lattice in Euclidean space of dimension d, there are of order W^{d-D} large connected components of the random MST inside a window of size W, and that d = d_c = D = 6 is a critical dimension. This differs from the value 8 suggested by Newman and Stein. We also critique the original argument for 8, and provide an improved scaling argument that again yields d_c=6. The result implies that the strongly-disordered spin-glass model has many ground states for d>6, and only of order one below six. The results for MSTs also apply on the Poisson-weighted infinite tree, which is a mean-field approach to the continuum model of MSTs in Euclidean space, and is a limit of the BL. In a companion paper we develop an epsilon=6-d expansion for the random MST on critical percolation clusters.

Abstract:Consider the Erdős-Renyi random graph on n vertices where each edge is present independently with probability c/n, with c>0 fixed. For large n, a typical random graph locally behaves like a Galton-Watson tree with Poisson offspring distribution with mean c. Here, we study large deviations from this typical behavior within the framework of the local weak convergence of finite graph sequences. The associated rate function is expressed in terms of an entropy functional on unimodular measures and takes finite values only at measures supported on trees. We also establish large deviations for other commonly studied random graph ensembles such as the uniform random graph with given number of edges growing linearly with the number of vertices, or the uniform random graph with given degree sequence. To prove our results, we introduce a new configuration model which allows one to sample uniform random graphs with a given neighborhood distribution, provided the latter is supported on trees. We also introduce a new class of unimodular random trees, which generalizes the usual Galton Watson tree with given degree distribution to the case of neighborhoods of arbitrary finite depth. These generalized Galton Watson trees turn out to be useful in the analysis of unimodular random trees and may be considered to be of interest in their own right.

Abstract:We show that the Brownian continuum random tree is the Gromov–Hausdorff–Prohorov scaling limit of the uniform spanning tree on high-dimensional graphs including the d -dimensional torus with , the hypercube , and transitive expander graphs. Several corollaries for associated quantities are then deduced: convergence in distribution of the rescaled diameter, height and simple random walk on these uniform spanning trees to their continuum analogues on the continuum random tree.
