Abstract:In the spanning tree congestion problem, given a connected graph G , the objective is to compute a spanning tree T in G that minimizes its maximum edge congestion, where the congestion of an edge e of T is the number of edges in G for which the unique path in T between their endpoints traverses e . The problem is known to be -hard, but its approximability is still poorly understood, and it is not even known whether the optimum solution can be efficiently approximated with ratio o ( n ). In the decision version of this problem, denoted , we need to determine if G has a spanning tree with congestion at most K . It is known that is -complete for , and this implies a lower bound of 1.125 on the approximation ratio of minimizing congestion. On the other hand, can be solved in polynomial time, with the complexity status of this problem for remaining an open problem. We substantially improve the earlier hardness results by proving that is -complete for . This leaves only the case open, and improves the lower bound on the approximation ratio to 1.2. Motivated by evidence that minimizing congestion is hard even for graphs of small constant radius, we also consider restricted to graphs of radius 2, and we prove that this variant is -complete for all .

Abstract:In this paper we study the Spanning Tree Congestion problem, where we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and are asked to find a spanning tree $T$ of minimum maximum congestion. Here, the congestion of an edge $e\in T$ is the number of edges $uv\in E$ such that the (unique) path from $u$ to $v$ in $T$ traverses $e$. We consider this well-studied NP-hard problem from the point of view of (structural) parameterized complexity and obtain the following results. We resolve a natural open problem by showing that Spanning Tree Congestion is not FPT parameterized by treewidth (under standard assumptions). More strongly, we present a generic reduction which applies to (almost) any parameter of the form ``vertex-deletion distance to class $\mathcal{C}$'', thus obtaining W[1]-hardness for parameters more restricted than treewidth, including tree-depth plus feedback vertex set, or incomparable to treewidth, such as twin cover. Via a slight tweak of the same reduction we also show that the problem is NP-complete on graphs of modular-width $4$. Even though it is known that Spanning Tree Congestion remains NP-hard on instances with only one vertex of unbounded degree, it is currently open whether the problem remains hard on bounded-degree graphs. Abstract:Computing a Euclidean minimum spanning tree of a set of points is a seminal problem in computational geometry and geometric graph theory. We combine it with another classical problem in graph drawing, namely computing a monotone geometric representation of a given graph. More formally, given a finite set $S$ of points in the plane and a finite set $\cal D$ of directions, a geometric spanning tree $T$ with vertex set $S$ is ${\cal D}$-monotone if, for every pair $\{u,v\}$ of vertices of $T$, there exists a direction $d \in \cal D$ for which the unique path from $u$ to $v$ in $T$ is monotone with respect to $d$. We provide a characterization of ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning trees. Based on it, we show that a ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree of minimum length can be computed in polynomial time if the number $k=|{\cal D}|$ of directions is fixed, both when (i) the set ${\cal D}$ of directions is prescribed and when (ii) the objective is to find a minimum-length ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree over all sets ${\cal D}$ of $k$ directions. For $k = 2$, we describe algorithms that are much faster than those for the general case. Furthermore, in contrast to the classical Euclidean minimum spanning tree, whose vertex degree is at most six, we show that for every even integer $k$, there exists a point set $S_k$ and a set $\cal D$ of $k$ directions such that any minimum-length $\cal D$-monotone spanning tree of $S_k$ has maximum vertex degree $2k$.

Minimum Cost Flow in the CONGEST Model

Abstract:We consider the CONGEST model on a network with $n$ nodes, $m$ edges, diameter $D$, and integer costs and capacities bounded by $\text{poly} n$. In this paper, we show how to find an exact solution to the minimum cost flow problem in $n^{1/2+o(1)}(\sqrt{n}+D)$ rounds, improving the state of the art algorithm with running time $m^{3/7+o(1)}(\sqrt nD^{1/4}+D)$ [Forster et al. FOCS 2021], which only holds for the special case of unit capacity graphs. For certain graphs, we achieve even better results. In particular, for planar graphs, expander graphs, $n^{o(1)}$-genus graphs, $n^{o(1)}$-treewidth graphs, and excluded-minor graphs our algorithm takes $n^{1/2+o(1)}D$ rounds. We obtain this result by combining recent results on Laplacian solvers in the CONGEST model [Forster et al. FOCS 2021, Anagnostides et al. DISC 2022] with a CONGEST implementation of the LP solver of Lee and Sidford [FOCS 2014], and finally show that we can round the approximate solution to an exact solution. Our algorithm solves certain linear programs, that generalize minimum cost flow, up to additive error $\epsilon$ in $n^{1/2+o(1)}(\sqrt{n}+D)\log^3 (1/\epsilon)$ rounds.

Minimum Plane Bichromatic Spanning Trees

Abstract:For a set of red and blue points in the plane, a minimum bichromatic spanning tree (MinBST) is a shortest spanning tree of the points such that every edge has a red and a blue endpoint. A MinBST can be computed in $O(n\log n)$ time where $n$ is the number of points. In contrast to the standard Euclidean MST, which is always plane (noncrossing), a MinBST may have edges that cross each other. However, we prove that a MinBST is quasi-plane, that is, it does not contain three pairwise crossing edges, and we determine the maximum number of crossings. Moreover, we study the problem of finding a minimum plane bichromatic spanning tree (MinPBST) which is a shortest bichromatic spanning tree with pairwise noncrossing edges. This problem is known to be NP-hard. The previous best approximation algorithm, due to Borgelt et al. (2009), has a ratio of $O(\sqrt{n})$. It is also known that the optimum solution can be computed in polynomial time in some special cases, for instance, when the points are in convex position, collinear, semi-collinear, or when one color class has constant size. We present an $O(\log n)$-factor approximation algorithm for the general case.

Abstract:The Minimum Spanning Tree problem aims to create a subset of a graph where all the vertices are connected with the minimum edge weights and with no cycle. In this field, an innovative method entitled Dhouib-Matrix-MSTP (DM-MSTP) is designed in this research work with a time complexity independently of the number of edges O(n*log(n)) where n is the number of vertices. DM-MSTP is a constructive algorithm based on a matrix navigation with two new lists (Min-Columns and MST-Path) in order to organize the steering flow. DM-MSTP is composed of four simple steps where the first and the fourth steps are repeated only once, whereas the second and third are reiterated (n-1). For more clarification, a step-by-step application of the proposed method is presented in details. Besides, the performance of DM-MSTP is proved through different examples from the literature including a graph with negative weighted edges and complete graphs from TSP-LIB. Moreover, with a simple modification (Min by Max) the DM-MSTP is tested on the Maximum (Largest) Spanning Tree Problem. Also, DM-MSTP is applied on eight case studies and compared to six methods developed in the literature. All these experimental results in the above different environments show that DM-MSTP can rapidly plan the shortest spanning tree with a stable performance and convivial representation of the optimal tree. Hence, DM-MSTP is developed under Python programming language using Matplotlib and Numpy standard libraries.
Minimum Spanning Trees with Bounded Degrees of Vertices in a Specified Stable Set

Abstract:Given a graph $G$ and sets $\{\alpha_v~|~v \in V(G)\}$ and $\{\beta_v~|~v \in V(G)\}$ of non-negative integers, it is known that the decision problem whether $G$ contains a spanning tree $T$ such that $\alpha_v \le d_T (v) \le \beta_v $ for all $v \in V(G)$ is $NP$-complete. In this article, we relax the problem by demanding that the degree restrictions apply to vertices $v\in U$ only, where $U$ is a stable set of $G$. In this case, the problem becomes tractable. A. Frank presented a result characterizing the positive instances of that relaxed problem. Using matroid intersection developed by J. Edmonds, we give a new and short proof of Frank's result and show that if $U$ is stable and the edges of $G$ are weighted by arbitrary real numbers, then even a minimum-cost tree $T$ with $\alpha_v \le d_T (v) \le \beta_v $ for all $v \in U$ can be found in polynomial time if such a tree exists.

Abstract:The maximum flow algorithm has long been known for calculating the minimum edge cut of any two vertices of a connected graph. The original algorithm, however, does not tell us which edges should be taken exactly and therefore there could be more than one way to construct a minimum-edge-cut set. In this paper, we propose a new method to get a minimum-edge-cut set by selecting edges of a graph in the order of betweenness. By comparing with the augmenting path method, it tends to make the two divided parts of a graph more balanced.
Geometric Spanning Trees Minimizing the Wiener Index

Abstract:The Wiener index of a network, introduced by the chemist Harry Wiener, is the sum of distances between all pairs of nodes in the network. This index, originally used in chemical graph representations of the non-hydrogen atoms of a molecule, is considered to be a fundamental and useful network descriptor. We study the problem of constructing geometric networks on point sets in Euclidean space that minimize the Wiener index: given a set $P$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, the goal is to construct a network, spanning $P$ and satisfying certain constraints, that minimizes the Wiener index among the allowable class of spanning networks. In this work, we focus mainly on spanning networks that are trees and we focus on problems in the plane ($d=2$). We show that any spanning tree that minimizes the Wiener index has non-crossing edges in the plane. Then, we use this fact to devise an $O(n^4)$-time algorithm that constructs a spanning tree of minimum Wiener index for points in convex position. We also prove that the problem of computing a spanning tree on $P$ whose Wiener index is at most $W$, while having total (Euclidean) weight at most $B$, is NP-hard. Computing a tree that minimizes the Wiener index has been studied in the area of communication networks, where it is known as the optimum communication spanning tree problem.

Abstract:The Minimum Branch Vertices Spanning Tree problem aims to find a spanning tree $T$ in a given graph $G$ with the fewest branch vertices, defined as vertices with a degree three or more in $T$. This problem, known to be NP-hard, has attracted significant attention due to its importance in network design and optimization. Extensive research has been conducted on the algorithmic and combinatorial aspects of this problem, with recent studies delving into its fixed-parameter tractability. In this paper, we focus primarily on the parameter modular-width. We demonstrate that finding a spanning tree with the minimum number of branch vertices is Fixed-Parameter Tractable (FPT) when considered with respect to modular-width. Additionally, in cases where each vertex in the input graph has an associated cost for serving as a branch vertex, we prove that the problem of finding a spanning tree with the minimum branch cost (i.e., minimizing the sum of the costs of branch vertices) is FPT with respect to neighborhood diversity.

The Central Spanning Tree Problem

Abstract:Spanning trees are an important primitive in many data analysis tasks, when a data set needs to be summarized in terms of its "skeleton", or when a tree-shaped graph over all observations is required for downstream processing. Popular definitions of spanning trees include the minimum spanning tree and the optimum distance spanning tree, a.k.a. the minimum routing cost tree. When searching for the shortest spanning tree but admitting additional branching points, even shorter spanning trees can be realized: Steiner trees. Unfortunately, both minimum spanning and Steiner trees are not robust with respect to noise in the observations; that is, small perturbations of the original data set often lead to drastic changes in the associated spanning trees. In response, we make two contributions when the data lies in a Euclidean space: on the theoretical side, we introduce a new optimization problem, the "(branched) central spanning tree", which subsumes all previously mentioned definitions as special cases. On the practical side, we show empirically that the (branched) central spanning tree is more robust to noise in the data, and as such is better suited to summarize a data set in terms of its skeleton. We also propose a heuristic to address the NP-hard optimization problem, and illustrate its use on single cell RNA expression data from biology and 3D point clouds of plants.

Abstract:The minimal spanning tree problem is a popular problem of discrete optimization. Numerous algorithms have been developed using the traditional approach but with the emergence of modern-day complex data structures, new algorithms have been proposed which are more complex yet asymptotically efficient. In this paper we present a cycle detection based greedy algorithm, to obtain a minimal spanning tree of a given input weighted undirected graph. The algorithm operates on the idea that every connected graph without any cycle is a tree. At successive iterations, the algorithm selects and tests if the highest degree vertex is a member of any cycle to remove the most expensive edge from the cycle associated with it. The iteration continues until all the cycles are eliminated to obtain the resultant minimal spanning tree. The simplicity of the algorithm makes it easier to understand and implement in any high-level languages. The proposed approach will be beneficial in analyzing certain class of problems in science and engineering.

Abstract:Both the building cost and the multiple-source routing cost are important considerations in construction of a network system. A spanning tree with minimum building cost among all spanning trees is called a minimum spanning tree (MST), and a spanning tree with minimum k-source routing cost among all spanning trees is called a k-source minimum routing cost spanning tree (k-MRCT). This paper proposes an algorithm to construct a spanning tree T for a metric graph G with a source vertex set S such that the building cost of T is at most 1+2/(α−1) times of that of an MST of G, and the k-source routing cost of T is at most α(1+2(k−1)(n−2)/k(n+k−2)) times of that of a k-MRCT of G with respect to S, where α>1, k=|S| and n is the number of vertices of G.

Abstract:Planar hypergraphs are widely used in several applications, including VLSI design, metro maps, information visualisation, and databases. The minimum hypercut problem in a weighted hypergraph is to find a partition of the vertices into two nonempty sets, S and , with and that minimizes the total weight of hyperedges that have at least two endpoints in two different sets. In the present study, we propose an approach that effectively solves the minimum hypercut problem in ( s , t )-planar hypergraphs. The method proposed demonstrates polynomial time complexity, providing a significant advancement in solving this problem. The modelling example shows that the proposed strategy is effective at obtaining balanced bipartitions in VLSI circuits.

Approximating maximum-size properly colored forests

Abstract:In the Properly Colored Spanning Tree problem, we are given an edge-colored undirected graph and the goal is to find a properly colored spanning tree, i.e., a spanning tree in which any two adjacent edges have distinct colors. The problem is interesting not only from a graph coloring point of view, but is also closely related to the Degree Bounded Spanning Tree and (1,2)-Traveling Salesman problems, two classical questions that have attracted considerable interest in combinatorial optimization and approximation theory. Previous work on properly colored spanning trees has mainly focused on determining the existence of such a tree and hence has not considered the question from an algorithmic perspective. We propose an optimization version called Maximum-size Properly Colored Forest problem, which aims to find a properly colored forest with as many edges as possible. We consider the problem in different graph classes and for different numbers of colors, and present polynomial-time approximation algorithms as well as inapproximability results for these settings. Our proof technique relies on the sum of matching matroids defined by the color classes, a connection that might be of independent combinatorial interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the inverse minimum spanning tree problem under the bottleneck-type Hamming distance, where the weights of edges can be modified only within given intervals. We further consider the constrained case in which the total modification cost cannot exceed a given upper bound. It is shown that these inverse problems can be transformed into a minimum node cover problem on a bipartite graph, and we give a strongly polynomial time algorithm to solve this type of node cover problems.

In this paper, we show that if for all $S\subseteq V(G)$, $$\Omega_m(G\setminus S)\le \sum_{v\in S}\big(f(v)-2m\big)+m+\Omega_m(G[S]),$$ then $G$ has a spanning $m$-tree-connected subgraph $H$ containing $F$ such that for each vertex $ v$, $d_H(v)\le f(v)+\max\{0,d_F(v)-m\}$, where $G[S]$ denotes the induced subgraph of $G$ with the vertex set $S$ and $\Omega_m(G_0)$ is a parameter to measure $m$-tree-connectivity of a given graph $G_0$.
