Abstract:Given a set P of n points in the plane, the two-line center problem asks to find two lines that minimize the maximum distance from each point in P to its closer one of the two resulting lines. The currently best algorithm for the problem takes $O(n^2\log^2n)$ time by Jaromczyk and Kowaluk in 1995. In this paper, we present faster algorithms for three variants of the two-line center problem in which the orientations of the resulting lines are constrained. Specifically, our algorithms solve the problem in $O(n \log n)$ time when the orientations of both lines are fixed; in $O(n \log^3 n)$ time when the orientation of one line is fixed; and in $O(n^2 \alpha(n) \log n)$ time when the angle between the two lines is fixed, where $\alpha(n)$ denotes the inverse Ackermann function.

Minimum Monotone Spanning Trees

Abstract:Computing a Euclidean minimum spanning tree of a set of points is a seminal problem in computational geometry and geometric graph theory. We combine it with another classical problem in graph drawing, namely computing a monotone geometric representation of a given graph. More formally, given a finite set $S$ of points in the plane and a finite set $\cal D$ of directions, a geometric spanning tree $T$ with vertex set $S$ is ${\cal D}$-monotone if, for every pair $\{u,v\}$ of vertices of $T$, there exists a direction $d \in \cal D$ for which the unique path from $u$ to $v$ in $T$ is monotone with respect to $d$. We provide a characterization of ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning trees. Based on it, we show that a ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree of minimum length can be computed in polynomial time if the number $k=|{\cal D}|$ of directions is fixed, both when (i) the set ${\cal D}$ of directions is prescribed and when (ii) the objective is to find a minimum-length ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree over all sets ${\cal D}$ of $k$ directions. For $k = 2$, we describe algorithms that are much faster than those for the general case. Furthermore, in contrast to the classical Euclidean minimum spanning tree, whose vertex degree is at most six, we show that for every even integer $k$, there exists a point set $S_k$ and a set $\cal D$ of $k$ directions such that any minimum-length $\cal D$-monotone spanning tree of $S_k$ has maximum vertex degree $2k$.

Abstract:In this paper, the minimum spanning tree problem is investigated on the graph with fuzzy edge weights. The notion of fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree is presented based on the credibility measure, and then the solutions of the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem are discussed under different assumptions. First, we respectively, assume that all the edge weights are triangular fuzzy numbers and trapezoidal fuzzy numbers and prove that the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem can be transformed to a classical problem on a crisp graph in these two cases, which can be solved by classical algorithms such as the Kruskal algorithm and the Prim algorithm in polynomial time. Subsequently, as for the case that the edge weights are general fuzzy numbers, a fuzzy simulation-based genetic algorithm using Prufer number representation is designed for solving the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem. Some numerical examples are also provided for illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.
Efficient search of a minimum tree on points in a space with the $l_1$-norm

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the minimum spanning tree problem (for short, MSTP) on an arbitrary set of $n$ points of $d$-dimensional space in $l_1$-norm. For this problem, for each fixed $d\geq 2$, there is a known algorithm of the computational complexity $O\big(n\cdot (\log\,n + \log^{r_d}\,n\cdot \log\log\,n)\ big)$, where $r_d\in \{0,1,2,4\}$ for $d\in \{2,3,4,5\}$ and $r_d=d$ for $d\geq 6$. For $d=3$, this result can be improved to the computational complexity $O(n\cdot \log\,n)$. In this paper, for any fixed $d\geq 2$, an algorithm with the computational complexity $O(n\cdot \log^{d-1}\,n)$ is proposed to solve the considered MSTP, which improves the previous achievement for $d\geq 6$.

Minimum Plane Bichromatic Spanning Trees

Abstract:For a set of red and blue points in the plane, a minimum bichromatic spanning tree (MinBST) is a shortest spanning tree of the points such that every edge has a red and a blue endpoint. A MinBST can be computed in $O(n\log n)$ time where $n$ is the number of points. In contrast to the standard Euclidean MST, which is always plane (noncrossing), a MinBST may have edges that cross each other. However, we prove that a MinBST is quasi-plane, that is, it does not contain three pairwise crossing edges, and we determine the maximum number of crossings. Moreover, we study the problem of finding a minimum plane bichromatic spanning tree (MinPBST) which is a shortest bichromatic spanning tree with pairwise noncrossing edges. This problem is known to be NP-hard. The previous best approximation algorithm, due to Borgelt et al. (2009), has a ratio of $O(\sqrt{n})$. It is also known that the optimum solution can be computed in polynomial time in some special cases, for instance, when the points are in convex position, collinear, semi-collinear, or when one color class has constant size. We present an $O(\log n)$-factor approximation algorithm for the general case.

Efficient Algorithms for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree on Near-Convex Terminal Sets

Abstract:The Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree problem takes as input a set $\mathcal P$ of points in the Euclidean plane and finds the minimum length network interconnecting all the points of $\mathcal P$. In this paper, in continuation to the works of Du et al. and Weng et al., we study Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree when $\mathcal P$ is formed by the vertices of a pair of regular, concentric and parallel $n$-gons. We restrict our attention to the cases where the two polygons are not very close to each other. In such cases, we show that Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree is polynomial-time solvable, and we describe an explicit structure of a Euclidean Steiner minimal tree for $\mathcal P$. We also consider point sets $\mathcal P$ of size $n$ where the number of input points not on the convex hull of $\mathcal P$ is $f(n) \leq n$. We give an exact algorithm with running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(f(n)\log n)}$ for such input point sets $\mathcal P$. Note that when $f(n) = \mathcal{O}(\frac{n}{\log n})$, our algorithm runs in single-exponential time, and when $f(n) = o(n)$ the running time is $2^{o(n\log n)}$ which is better than the known algorithm stated in Hwang et al. We know that no FPTAS exists for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree unless P=NP, as shown by Garey et al. On the other hand FPTASes exist for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree on convex point sets, as given by Scott Provan. In this paper, we show that if the number of input points in $\mathcal P$ not belonging to the convex hull of $\mathcal P$ is $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$, then an FPTAS exists for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree. In contrast, we show that for any $\epsilon \in (0,1]$, when there are $\Omega(n^{\epsilon})$ points not belonging to the convex hull of the input set, then no FPTAS can exist for Euclidean Steiner Minimal Tree unless P=NP.

Effective medium theories for irregular fluffy structures: aggregation of small particles

Abstract:We study the extinction efficiencies as well as scattering properties of particles of different porosity. Calculations are performed for porous pseudospheres with small size (Rayleigh) inclusions using the discrete dipole approximation. Five refractive indices of materials covering the range from $1.20+0.00i$ to $1.75+0.58i$ were selected. They correspond to biological particles, dirty ice, silicate, amorphous carbon and soot in the visual part of spectrum. We attempt to describe the optical properties of such particles using Lorenz-Mie theory and a refractive index found from some effective medium theory (EMT) assuming the particle is homogeneous. We refer to this as the effective model. It is found that the deviations are minimal when utilizing the EMT based on the Bruggeman mixing rule. Usually the deviations in extinction factor do not exceed $\sim 5%$ for particle porosity ${\cal P}=0 - 0.9$ and size parameters $x_{\rm porous} = 2 \pi r_{\rm s, porous}/\lambda \la 25$. The deviations are larger for scattering and absorption efficiencies and smaller for particle albedo and asymmetry parameter. Our calculations made for spheroids confirm these conclusions. Preliminary consideration shows that the effective model represents the intensity and polarization of radiation scattered by fluffy aggregates quite well. Thus, the effective models of spherical and non-spherical particles can be used to significantly simplify computations of the optical properties of aggregates containing only Rayleigh inclusions.

Near-linear Time Algorithm for Approximate Minimum Degree Spanning Trees

Abstract:Given a graph G = (V, E), we wish to compute a spanning tree whose maximum vertex degree, i.e. tree degree, is as small as possible. Computing the exact optimal solution is known to be NP-hard, since it generalizes the Hamiltonian path problem. For the approximation version of this problem, a Õ(mn) time algorithm that computes a spanning tree of degree at most Δ^* +1 is previously known [Fürer & Raghavachari 1994]; here Δ^* denotes the minimum tree degree of all the spanning trees. In this paper we give the first near-linear time approximation algorithm for this problem. Specifically speaking, we propose an Õ(1/ϵ^7m) time algorithm that computes a spanning tree with tree degree (1+ϵ)Δ^* + O(1/ϵ^2log n) for any constant ϵ∈ (0,1/6). Thus, when Δ^*=ω(log n), we can achieve approximate solutions with constant approximate ratio arbitrarily close to 1 in near-linear time.
Finding a Minimum Spanning Tree with a Small Non-Terminal Set

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of finding a minimum weight spanning tree that contains each vertex in a given subset $V_{\rm NT}$ of vertices as an internal vertex. This problem, called Minimum Weight Non-Terminal Spanning Tree, includes $s$-$t$ Hamiltonian Path as a special case, and hence it is NP-hard. In this paper, we first observe that Non-Terminal Spanning Tree, the unweighted counterpart of Minimum Weight Non-Terminal Spanning Tree, is already NP-hard on some special graph classes. Moreover, it is W[1]-hard when parameterized by clique-width. In contrast, we give a $3k$-vertex kernel and $O^*(2^k)$-time algorithm, where $k$ is the size of non-terminal set $V_{\rm NT}$. The latter algorithm can be extended to Minimum Weight Non-Terminal Spanning Tree with the restriction that each edge has a polynomially bounded integral weight. We also show that Minimum Weight Non-Terminal Spanning Tree is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the number of edges in the subgraph induced by the non-terminal set $V_{\rm NT}$, extending the fixed-parameter tractability of Minimum Weight Non-Terminal Spanning Tree to the general case. Finally, we give several results for structural parameterization.

Geometric Spanning Trees Minimizing the Wiener Index

Abstract:The Wiener index of a network, introduced by the chemist Harry Wiener, is the sum of distances between all pairs of nodes in the network. This index, originally used in chemical graph representations of the non-hydrogen atoms of a molecule, is considered to be a fundamental and useful network descriptor. We study the problem of constructing geometric networks on point sets in Euclidean space that minimize the Wiener index: given a set $P$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, the goal is to construct a network, spanning $P$ and satisfying certain constraints, that minimizes the Wiener index among the allowable class of spanning networks. In this work, we focus mainly on spanning networks that are trees and we focus on problems in the plane ($d=2$). We show that any spanning tree that minimizes the Wiener index has non-crossing edges in the plane. Then, we use this fact to devise an $O(n^4)$-time algorithm that constructs a spanning tree of minimum Wiener index for points in convex position. We also prove that the problem of computing a spanning tree on $P$ whose Wiener index is at most $W$, while having total (Euclidean) weight at most $B$, is NP-hard. Computing a tree that minimizes the Wiener index has been studied in the area of communication networks, where it is known as the optimum communication spanning tree problem.

Abstract:In this article, we study the Euclidean minimum spanning tree problem in an imprecise setup. The problem is known as the \emph{Minimum Spanning Tree Problem with Neighborhoods} in the literature. We study the problem where the neighborhoods are represented as non-crossing line segments. Given a set ${\cal S}$ of $n$ disjoint line segments in $I\!\!R^2$, the objective is to find a minimum spanning tree (MST) that contains exactly one end-point from each segment in $\cal S$ and the cost of the MST is minimum among $2^n$ possible MSTs. We show that finding such an MST is NP-hard in general, and propose a $2\alpha$-factor approximation algorithm for the same, where $\alpha$ is the approximation factor of the best-known approximation algorithm to compute a minimum cost Steiner tree in an undirected graph with non-negative edge weights. As an implication of our reduction, we can show that the unrestricted version of the problem (i.e., one point must be chosen from each segment such that the cost of MST is as minimum as possible) is also NP-hard. We also propose a parameterized algorithm for the problem based on the "separability" parameter defined for segments.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the inverse minimum spanning tree problem under the bottleneck-type Hamming distance, where the weights of edges can be modified only within given intervals. We further consider the constrained case in which the total modification cost cannot exceed a given upper bound. It is shown that these inverse problems can be transformed into a minimum node cover problem on a bipartite graph, and we give a strongly polynomial time algorithm to solve this type of node cover problems.

Abstract:The Minimum Branch Vertices Spanning Tree problem aims to find a spanning tree $T$ in a given graph $G$ with the fewest branch vertices, defined as vertices with a degree three or more in $T$. This problem, known to be NP-hard, has attracted significant attention due to its importance in network design and optimization. Extensive research has been conducted on the algorithmic and combinatorial aspects of this problem, with recent studies delving into its fixed-parameter tractability. In this paper, we focus primarily on the parameter modular-width. We demonstrate that finding a spanning tree with the minimum number of branch vertices is Fixed-Parameter Tractable (FPT) when considered with respect to modular-width. Additionally, in cases where each vertex in the input graph has an associated cost for serving as a branch vertex, we prove that the problem of finding a spanning tree with the minimum branch cost (i.e., minimizing the sum of the costs of branch vertices) is FPT with respect to neighborhood diversity.

Simple Length-Constrained Minimum Spanning Trees

Abstract:In the length-constrained minimum spanning tree (MST) problem, we are given an $n$-node edge-weighted graph $G$ and a length constraint $h \geq 1$. Our goal is to find a spanning tree of $G$ whose diameter is at most $h$ with minimum weight. Prior work of Marathe et al.\ gave a poly-time algorithm which repeatedly computes maximum cardinality matchings of minimum weight to output a spanning tree whose weight is $O(\log n)$-approximate with diameter $O(\log n)\cdot h$. In this work, we show that a simple random sampling approach recovers the results of Marathe et al. -- no computation of min-weight max-matchings needed! Furthermore, the simplicity of our approach allows us to tradeoff between the approximation factor and the loss in diameter: we show that for any $\epsilon \geq 1/\operatorname{poly}(n)$, one can output a spanning tree whose weight is $O(n^\epsilon / \epsilon)$-approximate with diameter $O(1/\epsilon)\cdot h$ with high probability in poly-time. This immediately gives the first poly-time $\operatorname{poly}(\log n)$-approximation for length-constrained MST whose loss in diameter is $o(\log n)$.

Abstract:The Minimum Spanning Tree problem aims to create a subset of a graph where all the vertices are connected with the minimum edge weights and with no cycle. In this field, an innovative method entitled Dhouib-Matrix-MSTP (DM-MSTP) is designed in this research work with a time complexity independently of the number of edges O(n*log(n)) where n is the number of vertices. DM-MSTP is a constructive algorithm based on a matrix navigation with two new lists (Min-Columns and MST-Path) in order to organize the steering flow. DM-MSTP is composed of four simple steps where the first and the fourth steps are repeated only once, whereas the second and third are reiterated (n-1). For more clarification, a step-by-step application of the proposed method is presented in details. Besides, the performance of DM-MSTP is proved through different examples from the literature including a graph with negative weighted edges and complete graphs from TSP-LIB. Moreover, with a simple modification (Min by Max) the DM-MSTP is tested on the Maximum (Largest) Spanning Tree Problem. Also, DM-MSTP is applied on eight case studies and compared to six methods developed in the literature. All these experimental results in the above different environments show that DM-MSTP can rapidly plan the shortest spanning tree with a stable performance and convivial representation of the optimal tree. Hence, DM-MSTP is developed under Python programming language using Matplotlib and Numpy standard libraries.
Minimizing the stabbing number of matchings, trees, and triangulations

Abstract:The (axis-parallel) stabbing number of a given set of line segments is the maximum number of segments that can be intersected by any one (axis-parallel) line. This paper deals with finding perfect matchings, spanning trees, or triangulations of minimum stabbing number for a given set of points. The complexity of these problems has been a long-standing open question; in fact, it is one of the original 30 outstanding open problems in computational geometry on the list by Demaine, Mitchell, and O'Rourke. The answer we provide is negative for a number of minimum stabbing problems by showing them NP-hard by means of a general proof technique. It implies non-trivial lower bounds on the approximability. On the positive side we propose a cut-based integer programming formulation for minimizing the stabbing number of matchings and spanning trees. We obtain lower bounds (in polynomial time) from the corresponding linear programming relaxations, and show that an optimal fractional solution always contains an edge of at least constant weight. This result constitutes a crucial step towards a constant-factor approximation via an iterated rounding scheme. In computational experiments we demonstrate that our approach allows for actually solving problems with up to several hundred points optimally or near-optimally.

Approximating Spanning Trees with Low Crossing Number

Abstract:We present a linear programming based algorithm for computing a spanning tree $T$ of a set $P$ of $n$ points in $\Re^d$, such that its crossing number is $O(\min(t \log n, n^{1-1/d}))$, where $t$ the minimum crossing number of any spanning tree of $P$. This is the first guaranteed approximation algorithm for this problem. We provide a similar approximation algorithm for the more general settings of building a spanning tree for a set system with bounded \VC dimension. Our approach is an alternative to the reweighting technique previously used in computing such spanning trees. Abstract:In the spanning tree congestion problem, given a connected graph G , the objective is to compute a spanning tree T in G that minimizes its maximum edge congestion, where the congestion of an edge e of T is the number of edges in G for which the unique path in T between their endpoints traverses e . The problem is known to be -hard, but its approximability is still poorly understood, and it is not even known whether the optimum solution can be efficiently approximated with ratio o ( n ). In the decision version of this problem, denoted , we need to determine if G has a spanning tree with congestion at most K . It is known that is -complete for , and this implies a lower bound of 1.125 on the approximation ratio of minimizing congestion. On the other hand, can be solved in polynomial time, with the complexity status of this problem for remaining an open problem. We substantially improve the earlier hardness results by proving that is -complete for . This leaves only the case open, and improves the lower bound on the approximation ratio to 1.2. Motivated by evidence that minimizing congestion is hard even for graphs of small constant radius, we also consider restricted to graphs of radius 2, and we prove that this variant is -complete for all .

Abstract:Given an undirected graph with a nonnegative weight on each edge, the shortest total path length spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree of the graph such that the total path length summed over all pairs of the vertices is minimized. In this paper, we present several approximation algorithms for this problem. Our algorithms achieve approximation ratios of 2, 15/8, and 3/2 in time O(n2+f(G)),O(n3), and O(n4) respectively, in which f(G) is the time complexity for computing all-pairs shortest paths of the input graph G and n is the number of vertices of G. Furthermore, we show that the approximation ratio of (4/3+ε) can be achieved in polynomial time for any constant ε>0.
