Abstract:Moxibustion is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It achieved higher level of recognition and had more general application in ancient times than in contemporary life. As the vital historical sources, the records of unearthed literatures offered precious insights to Chinese social life pattern and medical practice in Qin and Han dynasties (221 BC–220 AD). There was no surprise that the bamboo and silk documents excavated from Mawangdui (马王堆 ) tomb, Hantanpo ( 旱滩坡 ) tomb, and other relics had a large amount of texts relevant to moxibustion. This research sorted moxibustion recordings from seven unearthed literatures and discovered that moxibustion had been developed into different modalities and utilized to treat many diseases at that time. In addition, the indications, contraindications of moxibustion, and the method of postmoxibustion care were also discussed. On this basis, some hints were provided to support the hypothesis that the practice of moxibustion led to the discovery of meridians. All our preliminary results in the research have drawn attention for this old therapy and given a new source for its application in clinic and scientific research.

Abstract:Objective:To compare the heat-sensitive moxibustion for treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome(IBS-D) of position moxibustion in clinical effect between different.Methods:54 cases of IBS-D were randomly divided into the experimental group of heat-sensitive suspension moxibustion(hereinafter referred to as the experimental group)and the control group of non heat-sensitive suspension moxibustion(hereinafter referred to as the control group),28 cases of expreimental group,26 cases in the control group.The experimental group with heat-sensitive moxibustion sensation disappeared as the control group,40min each time,2 times a day two group,were treated with 5d,6d 1 times a day,for 25 consecutive times,for 35 times(30d) were observed before and after treatment in two groups of clinical curative effect.Results:After treatment,the cure-remarkable-effectiveness rate of experimental group is 75.00%,compared with the control group,the experimental group was statistically significant(P0.01).The experimental group diarrhea and abdominal distention difference was statistically significant(P0.05).Conclusion:Heat-sensitive moxibustion treatment of IBS-D curative effect is better than that of non heat-sensitive moxibustion,heat-sensitive acupoints developments to pinpoint moxibustion therapeutic effect can be enhanced.
Application Development of Baihui (GV20) Moxibustion in Ancient China: a Data Analysis Study Based on Ancient Books

Abstract:Importance: We compile and analyze ancient literature related to Baihui (GV20) moxibustion and summarize the development of its ancient clinical application. Observations: The Chinese Medical Classic (5th edition) was used as the search source to screen and organize articles related to Baihui moxibustion to establish a database. We created indexing norms according to study characteristics and indexed books, dynasties, literary styles, disease key words, matching acupoints, combinations, moxibustion amounts, and moxa cone sizes. SPSS version 24.0 software was used to calculate the index results. A total of 320 articles that met the requirements were finally included and were attributed to 99 ancient books, spanning from the Western Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. A total of 45 keywords were used for disease evidence: the most frequent occurrences were internal medicine (primary category), limb meridians (secondary category), and head diseases (specific patterns). Conclusions and relevance: Baihui moxibustion has been updated and developed in the literature over the ages, and the method of Baihui moxibustion is diverse. The main treatment rule of Baihui moxibustion considers the whole body and close treatment of partial diseases. Baihui moxibustion also has the rule of following meridian indications, with treatment based on syndrome differentiation and compatible application. Baihui moxibustion alone has a relatively strong effect of raising yang and lifting the sunken, which can treat the sinking of qi and deficiency.

Abstract:The Dragon Gate Stone Inscription prescriptions are the earliest surviving stone inscriptions of medical formulas in China, covering various departments such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and ophthalmology. By reviewing 28 moxibustion prescriptions recorded in the Dragon Gate Stone Inscriptions, the following application characteristics are summarized: moxibustion mainly treats acute diseases such as mania, deficiency-cold syndrome, and jaundice; in terms of point selection, specific points such as the thirteen ghost points, eight influential points, and front-mu points are used, emphasizing the extraordinary meridians such as governor vessel and conception vessel, as well as specific single acupoints with unique therapeutic effects; in clinical application, it follows the principle of treating according to syndrome differentiation, uses multiple acupoints simultaneously, employs food-medicine homology, and adjusts the moxibustion dosage according to individual conditions. The Dragon Gate Stone Inscription prescriptions reflect that the application of moxibustion therapy during the Northern Wei to Tang Dynasty period had already reached a relatively mature level, indicating a high level of proficiency in moxibustion techniques during that time.

Abstract:Objective:To summarize and analyze the acupoint rules of gastrointestinal dysfunction and provide the theoretical foundation for selection program of treating gastrointestinal dysfunction with acupuncture and moxibustion.Methods:Retrieve the articles ( from 1994 to 2014) of gastrointestinal dysfunction treated by acu-puncture and moxibustion from China National Knowledge Infrastructure ( CNKI) .The acupoints used in the ar-ticles were analyzed by statistical methods.Results:Altogether 44 articles were included in analysis, and the most frequently used points were Zusanli(ST 36), Shangjuxu(ST 37), Thianshu(ST 25), Sanyinjiao(SP 6), Neiguan(PC 6)and so on.Selected meridians in the stomach meridian, spleen meridian and Ren meridian were given priority to.Xiahe point, He point and Bahui point were the most frequently used specific acupoints.Con-clusion:Treating gastrointestinal dysfunction with acupuncture and moxibustion is safe and effective, and the acupoints are mainly located in stomach meridian, spleen meridian and Ren meridian.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Stents have been placed through malignant pancreatic strictures, mainly to alleviate pain of presumed obstructive origin. Self-expanding metallic stents have major advantages over plastic stents when used for treatment of malignant biliary strictures. However, there are few reports of their use in patients with malignant pancreatic duct strictures, especially those with complications related to ductal obstruction. METHODS Self-expanding metallic stents were placed in the pancreatic ducts of 3 patients with obstructive complications of pancreatic cancer: smoldering pancreatitis, a disrupted pancreatic duct with pseudocyst caused by open surgical biopsy, and a disrupted pancreatic duct with fistula and resultant liver abscess. All 3 patients had metallic stents placed concomitantly in the biliary tract; one had enteral stents placed as well. Clinical and pathology records and imaging studies were reviewed retrospectively. OBSERVATIONS In all cases, there was resolution of the specific clinical problem and reasonable survival (1.5 years in one patient). CONCLUSIONS The use of self-expanding metallic stents for treatment of certain obstructive complications of pancreatic tumors is feasible and effective.

Abstract:We have developed a computerized system for quantitative morphometric analysis of the number and position of secretory granules and organelles in pancreatic islet beta cells following tolbutamide treatment. Data from animals injected with tolbutamide for 1, 2, and 3 days were compared to tissues obtained from untreated control animals. Pancreatic islets removed by a collagenase technique were perfused with an appropriate medium to restore a basal state. After fixation and embedding, thick sections of beta cells were viewed by electron microscopy. Morphometric studies of randomly selected or serially cut cells were performed with computer programs for digitization, quantify, rotational, and perspective display. Tolbutamide treatment resulted in graded granule depletion which was maximal at 72 hr relative to control animals. Reduced granule density was associated with significant reduction in total cell area or cytoplasmic area, but was without effect on nuclear size. Since granule depletion improved visualization of subcellular structures, this will enable us to pursue studies of exocytosis under a variety of physiological conditions.

Abstract:Acupuncture-moxibustion material found in Dunhuang stone chamber shows academic value on research of acupuncture-moxibustion in Tang Dynasty and before. In the paper we summarize its medical prescriptions and the existing acupoint application contents. It is considered that its acupoint application is widely clinically used in dermatological department, cosmetology department, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology departments, paediatrics department, gynaecology department, anorectal department, orthopedics and traumatology department. It achieves remarkable effects in dermatological department, orthopedics and traumatology department. Medical literature of Dunhuang is a treasure of TCM with distinctive feature and it deserves to be further explored so as to serve the clinic and promote the inheritance and development of Dunhuang medicine, such as finding out high effect prescription.

DOU's inheritance and development of Huangdi Neijing (Internal Classic) and Nanjing (Classics on Medical Problems) as well as his influences on the later schools are approved to have great value and significance on the enhancement of clinical effect and development of acupuncture and moxibustion sciences.

Abstract:Abstract Background The pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) is closely related to the gut microbiota. Moxibustion has been used to improve the inflammation and gastrointestinal dysfunctions in gastrointestinal disorders such as UC. In this study, we investigated whether moxibustion could improve the gut microbial dysbiosis induced by dextran sulphate sodium. Methods Twenty-five male rats were randomly assigned into five groups. The UC rat model was established by administering DSS solution. The rats in the moxibustion and normal rats with moxibustion groups were treated with moxibustion at Tianshu (bilateral, ST25) points, and the mesalazine group rats were treated with mesalazine once daily for 7 consecutive days. Disease activity index (DAI) and haematoxylin and eosin staining were used to evaluate the effect of moxibustion. Gut microbiota profiling was conducted by metagenomic high throughput sequencing technology. The gut microbiota composition, diversity and function were analyzed and compared using metagenomics methodologies. Results The DAI scores and histopathology scores in the moxibustion and mesalazine groups were significantly decreased compared with the UC group ( P < 0.01). Moxibustion treatment increased abundance levels of Bacteroidetes , Actinobacteria , Ascomycota , Synergistetes and decreased abundance of Firmicutes , Proteobacteria . At the genus level, the abundance of Bacteroides , Bacteroides_bacterium_M7 , Prevotella , Bacteroidales_bacterium_H2 , were increased and Bacteroides_bacterium_H3 , Parabacteroides , Porphyromonas , Alistipes , Parasutterella were decreased in the UC group in comparsion with those in the NG group. Moxibustion increased the abundance of Bacteroides and Bacteroides_bacterium_H3 and decreased Bacteroides_bacterium_M7 , Prevotella , Bacteroidales_bacterium_H2 . In UC group, the specie Bacteroides_massiliensis was negatively ( P < 0.05) correlated with IL-23, Bacteroides_eggerthii_CAG109 and Bacteroides_eggerthii were negatively ( P < 0.05) correlated with TGF-β. And the species Prevotella_sp_CAG1031 and Bacteroides_bacterium_H2 were significant positively ( P < 0.05) correlated with IL-23. In addition, compare with the normal group, genes involved in certain metabolic pathways, such as energy production and conversion, amino acid transport and metabolism, carbohydrate transport and metabolism, were under-represented in the UC group, and these changes in the metabolic pathways could be reversed by moxibustion treatment and mesalazine treatment. Conclusions Our findings suggest that moxibustion treatment may protect the host from mucosal inflammation by modulating the intestinal microbiota community.

Abstract:The penetrating moxibustion technique is proposed based on experience of the ancients and clinical practice for many years. From the aspects of definition, action characteristics and technique at different parts, the advantage and application experience of penetrating moxibustion have been discussed. The adequate dose of moxibustion is necessary in penetrating moxibustion; in addition, moxibustion sensation should be penetrating; therefore, with a temperature of 43℃ for more than 20 min, sweating, flushing, speckle appearing after penetrating moxibustion. Due to individual differences of age, gender and constitution factors, the effects of penetrating moxibustion are different, in clinical practice the body reaction and patient's feelings should be deliberately focused on other than does or sore and blister of moxibustion. The technique is common used in the abdomen, waist and knee joint, etc.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE In clinical trials of RA patients on traditional DMARDs, the addition of TNF-alpha antagonists increased infections compared with addition of placebo. Our objective was to compare serious infections following initiation of different RA regimens. Prior comparative studies of DMARD initiation have yielded conflicting results. METHODS We estimated hospitalization rates for infections following initiation of TNF-alpha antagonists, other DMARDs and oral glucocorticoids in Tennessee Medicaid-enrolled RA patients (1995-2005). Exposure time was measured using pharmacy information and infections were identified using validated definitions. Initiation of RA regimens was compared using Cox regression models with MTX as the reference. Sensitivity analyses excluded glucocorticoid users, applied a first exposure carried forward approach, restricted observations to 2002-05 and first episodes of use and explored effects of unmeasured confounders. RESULTS We identified 28 906 new episodes of medication use, including TNF-alpha antagonists (8%), MTX alone (15%) and glucocorticoids alone (57%). Compared with MTX initiation, TNF-alpha antagonist initiation did not significantly increase the risk of hospitalizations for pneumonia [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.61; 95% CI 0.85, 3.03] or any infection (aHR 1.31; 95% CI 0.78, 2.19). Initiation of LEF, SSZ or HCQ did not increase serious infections, compared with MTX. Both initiation and concurrent glucocorticoid use were associated with a dose-dependent increase in serious infections. Sensitivity analyses showed consistent results. CONCLUSIONS Compared with initiation of MTX alone, initiation of TNF-alpha antagonists was not associated with a large increase in the risk of serious infections. Glucocorticoid use was associated with a dose-dependent increase in the risk of these infections.

Abstract:The paper introduces professor GAO Shu-zhong's experience in qiguan (umbilicus pass) theory and its clinical application. Professor GAO believes that the umbilicus is the "pass" where the primary qi of sanjiao transported from the lower jiao to the middle jiao. It is the general pivot of qi transformation of yin and yang, as well as the place for qi ascending, descending, exiting and entering in the human body. Hence, the umbilicus is called qiguan (umbilicus pass). In clinical practice, associated with observation, palpation and pulse diagnosis, the qiguan theory is conductive to disease diagnosis. Moreover, the therapeutic methods for promoting qiguan is generated, i.e. umbilicus-acupuncture therapy and umbilicus-moxibustion therapy. In the umbilicus-acupuncture therapy, Gao 's umbilicus five points (umbilicus heart, umbilicus stomach, umbilicus liver, umbilicus kidney and umbilicus lung) are commonly selected. With the umbilicus- moxibustion therapy, the isolated moxibustion with different herbal materials is exerted at the umbilicus, in which, the herbal materials with drastic medical action, pungent and fragrant in flavor and warm in property are specially selected.

Abstract:New electrical network concepts are emerging in aeronautics due to high voltage direct current networks (HVDC). These networks give some specific possibilities concerning the connections between the bus bars and the equipments. We propose here a new component for this kind of purpose that helps in solving stability problems at the network level and in supplying powerful consumers. This component, the MAPFC - mixed function for actuation & power flow control - is an AC machine connected between two inverters. The machine can be used in a traditional way - as a motor or as a generator - but also to transfer power from one DC bus to the other. We explain the principles of the MAPFC, especially the theory in the Park's domain, and some simulation results are given. We also define capabilities and limitations of the equipment.
[Analysis on infusing and retaining qi from eight methods of treating diseases in Jinzhen Fu]

Abstract:Through study of Internal Classic and Yijing (The Book of Changes) combined with clinical experiences, the author analyzes characteristics of indications treated by eight methods in Jinzhen Fu ,manipulations as well as clinical applications of infusing and retaining qi, and believes that indications treated by eight methods includ coldness, heat, deficiency, excess and illness of qi, blood, body liquid(viscera), as well as meridians, collaterals, blood vessels. And eight methods have respective speciality according to their corresponding indications. The manipulations of eight methods, expecially infusing and retaining qi, are complete. Therefore, only tracing to the source in understanding and recognition of manipulations and keeping with the indications could show the original meaning of Jinzhen Fu, and then got perfect clinical therapeutic effect of eliminating diseases as soon as exertion of the needle.
Application of Data-Mining to Analyze Characteristics of Meridians and Acupoints Selected for Acu-Moxibustion Treatment of Chest Blockage in Ancient Literatures of Different Periods of Ancient Days

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the usage characteristics and principle of meridians and acupoints selected for treating chest blockage of ancient literatures by data-mining.Methods:By collecting the related data of the literature of acupuncture and moxibustion from the pre-Qin to the late Qing dynasty,establishing the ancient acupuncture clinical literature database of chest blockage and using data mining technology to census and sieve the commonly used meridians,acupuncture points and specific acupoints for chest blockage treatment in past dynasties were analyzed and the potential principle of these meridians and acupuncture points were studied as well.Results:In the past dynasties,the pericardium meridian of Hand Jueyin was most selected.The statistics of acupuncture points' usage frequency on chest blockage showed that yin meridians were used much more often while yang meridians seldom be used except stomach meridian and large intestine meridian.From the selected category of the selected specific acupoints,the specific acupoints took up absolute superiority,such as five-shu acupoints,yuan-source,luo-connecting points,etc.Conclusion:The selection for the treatment of chest blockage in ancient literatures mainly focused on the specific acupoints,and it incarnated the principle of selecting acupoints along the meridian.

Abstract:Through collecting the relevant provisions and medical cases of wei syndrome treated with acupuncture and moxibustion from ancient medical works, the diagnosis and acupoint selection in treatment of generalized myasthenia gravis (gMC) with acupuncture and moxibustion were analyzed systematically from 3 aspects, i.e. meridian differentiation, disease differentiation and syndrome differentiation. In treatment based on meridian differentiation, the acupoints are selected in the light of the running course of meridian and characteristics of meridian disorders. In treatment based on disease differentiation, the acupoints are selected in accordance with etiology, pathogenesis and transmission stages of wei syndrome. Concerning to syndrome differentiation in treatment, the acupoints are selected on the basis of therapeutic principles determined by different syndromes/patterns of wei syndrome. In modern clinical practice, the treatment for gMC should be rooted at ancient literature, thus a standardized regimen can be developed for diagnosis and treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion.
