Abstract:The in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is an effective technology for the remediation of organic contaminated groundwater. However, the requirement of adding oxidants, e.g. persulfate or H2O2, externally obviously reduces the economical efficiency of the overall treatment process. The method of in-situ generation of oxidants can avoid the disadvantage of conventional ISCO. Herein, our study indicates that the active chlorine can be effectively produced in a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) reactor, i.e. PRB-type two-compartment electrochemical device under the electric field. COD, i.e. chemical oxygen demand, as an indicator of organic pollutants in water was degraded by the in-situ electrogenerated active chlorine through the electrolysis of NaCl solution. The amount of COD removed in the anode chamber was 104 mg/L after operating the two-compartment device at 7.0 V for 12 h under the given working conditions, and COD detected in the cathode chamber was near zero, meaning all COD is removable in effluent. The results show that the in-situ electrogeneration of oxidants technology can provide a promising option for the treatment of groundwater organic pollutants.

Abstract:The utilization of copper oxide (CuO) as a catalyst in the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process holds great promise for effectively degrading aqueous organic pollutants, while the relevant mechanism remains inadequately understood. In this study, we delve into the evolution pathways of reactive species in the CuO/PMS system through a comprehensive series of experimental analyses. Our findings indicate that various reactive species are generated in the CuO/PMS system with the specific sequence, where the decomposition of surface Cu(II)-OOSO3- leads to the formation of surface Cu(III) species, which are responsible for the subsequent generation of HO•. The reactivity of these reactive species and the sequence of their generation explain the distinct oxidation behaviors of pollutants with different values of ionization potential (IP). In addition, singlet oxygen (1O2) may be produced during the PMS activation process, while its involvement in the oxidation of substrates is deemed negligible. This investigation presents a novel perspective, enhancing our comprehension of the mechanism underlying transition metal-mediated PMS activation processes. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The removal of refractory organic contaminations in water constitutes a fundamental concern within the realm of environmental pollution management. Peroxymonosulfate activation induced by transition metal oxides has garnered significant recognition as a promising technological approach for the degradation of aqueous organic contaminants, while the underlying mechanism remains enigmatic. In this study, we systematically investigate the evolution pathways of reactive species in the CuO/peroxymonosulfate system to reveal the mystery of the reaction mechanism between CuO and peroxymonosulfate. The outcomes of our study contribute to enhancing the practical applicability of transition metal-triggered PMS activation processes.

Abstract:Manganese oxides (MnOx) have been demonstrated to be effective materials to activate Oxone (i.e., PMS) to degrade various contaminants. However, the contribution of direct oxidation by MnOx to the total contaminant degradation under acidic conditions was often neglected in the published work, which has resulted in different and even conflicting interpretations of the reaction mechanisms. Here, the role of MnOx (as both oxidants and catalysts) in the activation of Oxone was briefly discussed. The findings offered new insights into the reaction mechanisms in PMS-MnOx and provided a more accurate approach to examine contaminant degradation for water/wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The treatment of emerging pollutants has become a challenging and multidisciplinary subject. Advanced oxidation processes based on persulfate are a strategic opportunity to address this issue, with research into catalysts and catalytic processes being the focus of this process. In this work, flower-like cobalt sulfide (F-CoS) particles acted as catalysts in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for degrading an organic pollutant, sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results indicated that F-CoS/PMS combined system performed excellently, with SMX being completely oxidized within 10 min. And the system exhibited superior resistance to environmental factors (e.g. pH and anions). Radicals quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses indicated that non-radical pathways based on high-valent cobalt-oxo (Co(IV)) species and 1 O 2 take a dominant position in SMX degradation, instead of SO 4 •- and •OH. Electrochemical, in-situ Raman and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that PMS interacts with Co sites on the F-CoS surface, and then electronic transfer processes occurred, in which PMS acts as an electron acceptor to produce Co(IV) species and as an electron donor to produce 1 O 2 . This study not only implies a method with great potential application in organic wastewater treatment but also contributes to further comprehending the heterogeneous activation process and catalytic mechanism of PMS.

Abstract:Persulfate-based in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) has been increasingly used for the remediation of contaminated groundwater and soil. In recent years, there have been numerous studies in the literature on all aspects of the activation of persulfate for contaminant removal at the laboratory scale, including the ways and mechanisms for the activation, the pathways of contaminant degradation, the factors associated with the activation performance, the methods characterizing the processes, etc. In contrast, studies in the literature on the practical use of the activated persulfate at the field scale are fewer, and at the same time have not been reviewed in an organized way. This review was initiated to summarize on the current research on the applications of activated persulfate for actual site remediation, and to extract the knowledge necessary for the formation of applicable technologies. The remediation efficiency and mechanism of activated persulfates by heat, alkaline, metal-based, and electrokinetic activated technologies are described. The major factors including pH, the persistence of persulfate, and the radius of influence and soil property during ISCO remediation applications were presented and discussed. Finally, the rebound process and impact towards microbial communities after in-situ chemical oxidation on site application were discussed.

Revisiting the Heterogeneous Peroxymonosulfate Activation by MoS2: a Surface Mo-Peroxymonosulfate Complex as the Major Reactive Species

Abstract:Heterogeneous peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are under extensive investigation for their great potential in water remediation. The understanding of the PMS activation mechanism is crucial but still debatable. Here, we describe a thorough investigation of the mechanism involved in PMS activation by using molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as a catalyst. This MoS2/PMS system exhibited intriguing target-dependent reactivity. Further comprehensive experimental results excluded the major contributions of various possible species, including HO center dot, SO4 center dot-, O-2(center dot-), O-1(2), homogeneous Mo(VI), and heterogeneous Mo(VI). We then proposed a surface Mo-OOSO3- complex as the major reactive species, while SO4 center dot- derived from the decomposition of Mo-OOSO3- acted as the secondary reactive species for pollutant removal. This complex could oxidize pollutants through the oxygen-atom-transfer mechanism and perform both nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks. This work provides novel perspectives for the mechanistic understanding of heterogeneous PMS-based AOPs for water remediation.

Abstract:Persulfate-based in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) for soil remediation has received great attention in recent years. However, the mechanisms of interaction between persulfate (PS) and soil constituents are not fully understood. In this study, PS decomposition, activation, free radical formation and conversion processes in 10 different soils were examined. The results showed that soil organic matter (SOM) was the dominant factor affecting PS decomposition in soil, but Fe/Mn-oxides were mainly responsible for PS decomposition when SOM was removed. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy analysis showed that sulfate radicals (SO4(center dot-)) and hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) generated from PS decomposition subsequently react with SOM to produce alkyl-like radicals (R-center dot), and is dependent on SOM content. R-center dot and SO4 center dot-/center dot OH radicals predominated in soil with high and low SOM, respectively, and all three radicals coexist in soil with medium SOM. Chemical probe analysis further identified the types of radicals, and R-center dot can reductively degrade hexachloroethane in high SOM soil, while SO4 center dot- and center dot OH oxidatively degrade phenol in low SOM soil. These findings provide valuable information for PS-ISCO, and new insight into the role of SOM in the remediation of contaminated soil.

Abstract:The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by multivalent transition metal oxides has been widely studied in organic pollutants degradation. Compared with that of valence electrons, the role of localized electrons of transition metal oxides in the activation of PMS has remained elusive. Herein, ZnO, as a typical irreducible oxide, was used as an ideal model to determine the role of the localized electrons of O-vacancies (Vo) in the PMS heterolysis process. Combined experimental and theoretical analysis demonstrated that O-vacancies, serving as the catalytically active sites, provide enough localized electron retransmission to the adsorbed HSO5- , via a single electron transfer reaction resulting in formation of OH- and SO4?- . In addition, O-vacancies promote PMS dehydration to form metastable - SO4-O-O-O4S- that rapidly decompose into O2?- , which is responsible for the 1O2 production. This work introduces a unique strategy for obtaining electronic-level insights into the role of catalyst defects in promoting efficient PMS activation.
New Insight into the Mechanism of Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Sulfur-Containing Minerals: Role of Sulfur Conversion in Sulfate Radical Generation.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate activation by sulfur-containing minerals has been applied extensively for the degradation of contaminants; however, the role of sulfur conversion in this process has not been fully explored. In this study, pyrite (FeS2)-based PMS activation process was developed for diethyl phthalate (DEP) degradation, and its underlying mechanisms were elucidated. PMS was found to be efficiently activated by FeS2 for DEP degradation and mineralization, achieving 58.9% total organic carbon removal using 0.5 g/L FeS2 and 2.0 mM PMS. Sulfides were the dominant electron donor for PMS activation, and mediated Fe(II) regeneration to activate PMS on the surface of FeS2 particles. Meanwhile, different sulfur conversion intermediates, such as S-5(2-), s(8)(0), S2O32-, and SO32-, were formed from the oxidation of sulfides by Fe(III) and PMS, and determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in-situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. SO32- was the dominant sulfur species responsible for sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-) generation by activating PMS directly or activating Fe(III) to initiate a radical chain reaction, which was supported by the electron paramagnetic resonance results. This study highlights the important role of sulfur conversion in PMS activation by pyrite and provides new insights into the mechanism of oxidant activation by sulfur-containing minerals. Abstract:Single-atom catalysts can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to enhance its oxidation of organic pollutants in water treatment. We synthesized a series of carbon-supported single-atom transition metal catalysts (, , , , and ) with similar compositions and structures. Their catalytic activity toward PMS activation and oxidation mechanisms were investigated using acid orange 7 (AO7) as a model pollutant. The degradation rate (min -1 •mol -1 •g•m -2 ) of AO7 followed order: /PMS (7.576×10 3 ) > /PMS (5.104×10 3 ) > /PMS (1.919×10 3 ) >> /PMS (0.058×10 3 ) > /PMS (0.035×10 3 ). Electron transfer mediated by surface-activated PMS was found to be the main regime of AO7 oxidation in the catalytic systems. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the degradation of AO7 was promoted by the intense adsorption of PMS and the electron transfer between AO7 and the surface-activated PMS on the catalyst. The cleavage of the naphthalene ring and the azo group was the primary degradation pathway. The toxicity of the products was significantly reduced. This research provides valuable findings for preparing highly efficient single-atom transition metal catalysts for PMS-based degradation of toxic and refractory organic pollutants from water.

Abstract:The reaction between Co(II) and PMS is an appealing advanced oxidation process (AOP), where multiple reactive oxidizing species (ROS) including high-valent cobalt-oxo [Co(IV)], sulfate radical (SO4•−), and hydroxy radical (•OH) are intertwined together for degrading pollutants. However, the relative contribution of various ROS and the influences of nontarget matrix constituents, on the degradation process are still unclear and yet to be answered. In this study, we confirmed the generation Co(IV) as dominant intermediate oxidant at acid medium by using methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) as a probe compound. Using chemical scavenging methods, the role of SO4•− and •OH was also identified, and the major ROS were converted from Co(IV) to radical species with the increase of PMS/Co(II) molar ratio as well as pH value. In addition, we found that their contributions to the abatement of organic contaminants are highly dependent on both their available amount and substrate-specific reactivity. Generally, organic substrates with low ionization potential (IP) are prone to react with Co(IV). More interestingly, in contrast to radical-based oxidation, Co(IV) exhibited the great resistance to humic acid (HA) and background ions. This study might shed new light on the PMS activation by cobalt(II) for degradation of organic contaminants.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been received increasing attention in recent years due to their high capability and adaptability for the degradation of emerging contaminants. Persulfate (PS, S2O8 2−) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO5 −) can be activated by thermal, alkaline, ultraviolet light, activated carbon, transition metal (such as Fe0, Fe2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ag+), ultrasound and hydrogen peroxide to form sulfate radical (SO4 −), which is strong oxidant and capable of effectively degrading emerging pollutants. Sulfate radical-based AOPs have a series of advantages in comparison with OH-based methods, for example: higher oxidation potential, higher selectivity and efficiency to oxidize pollutants containing unsaturated bonds or aromatic ring, wider pH range. Therefore, sulfate radicals are capable of removing the emerging contaminants more efficiently. In this review paper, various methods for the activation of PS and PMS were introduced, including, thermal, alkaline, radiation, transition metal ions and metal oxide, carbonaceous-based materials activation and so on; and their possible activation mechanisms were discussed. In addition, the application of activated PS and PMS for the degradation of emerging contaminants and the influencing factors were summarized. Finally, the concluding remarks and perspectives are made for future study on the activation of PS and PMS. This review can provide an overview for the activation and application of PS and PMS for the degradation of emerging contaminants, as well as for the deep understanding of the activation mechanisms of PS and PMS by various methods.

Abstract:Although the activation mechanisms of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by various homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been reported, the chemistry of PMS in catalyst-free systems and its interaction with background oxygenated anions remains poorly understood. In this study, the unactivated PMS and carbonate-activated PMS (CO 3 2– /PMS) systems for removal of various organic pollutant (including oxytetracycline (OTC), metronidazole (MNZ), methylene blue (MB), and acid orange G (OG)) were investigated. The results showed that 74.5 %, 90.21 %, 1.22 %, and 2.25 % of OTC, MB, OG, and MNZ were removed, respectively within 180 min in the unactivated PMS system due to the formation of · OH and 1 O 2 . 95.88 %, 100 %, 100 %, and 6.09 % of OTC, MB, OG, and MNZ were removed, respectively in the CO 3 2– /PMS system, which is primary due to the generation of 1 O 2 . The removal efficiencies of these four pollutants were significantly improved under alkaline conditions. In addition, the TOC removal rates were 21.88 % for MB and 26.53 % for OTC within 180 min in the CO 3 2– /PMS system. The presence of Cl − and SO 4 2− can greatly enhance the OTC removal efficiency both in the unactivated and CO 3 2– /PMS systems. Through the high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis, OTC degradation products in the unactivated PMS and CO 3 2– /PMS systems were identified, revealing six different reaction mechanisms, including hydroxylation (+16 Da), decarbonylation (−28 Da), demethylation (−14 Da), secondary alcohol oxidation (−2 Da), deamination (−15 Da), and dehydration (−18 Da). This study provides insight into the reaction mechanism of catalyst-free PMS systems and may promote the application of unactivated PMS and CO 3 2– /PMS systems for the remediation of organic contaminated water.

Abstract:Heterogeneously activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) have received increasing attention in contaminated water remediation. However, PMS activation by reduced clay minerals (e.g., reduced Fe-bearing smectite clays) has rarely been explored. Herein, PMS decomposition by reduced Fe-bearing smectite clays was investigated, and the hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) and sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) formation mechanisms were elucidated. Reduced nontronite NAu-2 (R-NAu-2) activated PMS efficiently to induce rapid degradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) within 30 s. Mossbauer spectroscopy, FTIR and XPS analyses substantiated that distorted trans-coordinated Fe(II)Fe(II)Fe(II)-OH entities were mainly responsible for rapid electron transfer to regenerate clay surface Fe(II) for PMS activation. Chemical probe, radical quenching, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results confirmed that (OH)-O-center dot and SO4 center dot- were mainly bound to the clay surface rather than in bulk solution, which resulted in the rapid degradation of organic compounds such as DEP, sulfamethoxazole, phenol, chlortetracycline and benzoic acid. Anions such as Cl- and NO3- had a limited effect on DEP degradation, while HCO3- inhibited the DEP degradation due to the increase of reaction pH. This study provides a new PMS activation strategy using reduced Fe-bearing smectite clays that will contribute to rapid degradation of organic contaminants using PMS-based AOTs.

Abstract:Synthetic manganese oxides had been widely investigated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for contaminant removal in recent years. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, e.g., radicals) was believed to be the primary PMS activation pathways. In this work, we report that natural manganese-containing minerals (NMMs) were also effective for PMS activation to degrade bisphenols in water. Moreover, a nonradical pathway different from literatures, was confirmed according to scavenging tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization, chemical probing, solvent exchange, and Raman and electrochemical analysis. It was verified that PMS complexed with the mineral surface via inner-sphere interaction. This surface interaction improved its reactivity towards the probe compounds, bisphenols. Taking bisphenol AF (BPAF) as an example, its degradation rate was related to surface area and dosages of the mineral. Water constituents such as Cl-, HCO3-, and NOM had negligible impact on BPAF removal. The activity of the mineral was kept in an 80-hour continuous flow test. The PMS/NMM coupled oxidation degraded BPAF through direct electron transfer, and the degradation intermediates further underwent hydroxylation, bond cleavage, H-atom substitution, aromatic ring-opening, and decarboxylation. Consequently, eco-toxicity of BPAF can be reduced during the oxidation.

In this study, several soil model minerals including goethite, hematite, magnetite, pyrolusite, kaolin, montmorillonite, and nontronite were selected to investigate their potential effects on PS decomposition and free radical evolution. It was found the decomposition efficiency of PS by these minerals varied significantly, and both the radical and non-radical decomposition processes were included. Pyrolusite has the highest reactivity for PS decomposition. However, PS decomposition is prone to form SO 4 2− through non-radical pathway, and thus, the amounts of free radicals (e.g., • OH and SO 4 •− ) produced are relatively limited. However, PS mainly decomposed to produce free radicals in the presence of goethite and hematite. In the presence of magnetite, kaolin, montmorillonite, and nontronite, PS both decomposed to produce SO 4 2− and free radicals. Furthermore, the radical process exhibited the high degradation performance for model pollutant such as phenol with relatively high utilization efficiency of PS, while non-radical decomposition has limited contribution to phenol degradation with extremely low utilization efficiency of PS. This study deepened the understanding of interactions between PS and minerals during the PS-based ISCO in soil remediation.

Abstract:The directional regulation of oxidation capacity in the carbon-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system is a promising strategy for wastewater purification. In this work, a novel iron cobalt and nitrogen co-doped carbonized wood sponge (FeCoNCWS) was developed. A superb catalytic performance for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation (∼100.0%) was obtained within 30 min in FeCoNCWS800/PMS system at 60℃. Besides, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribution was verified at different reaction temperatures. Specifically, the primary roles of sulfate and hydroxyl radicals (SO4·− and ·OH) in SMX removal weakened, while the secondary role of singlet oxygen (1O2) in SMX degradation was enhanced with the rise of reaction temperature in FeCoNCWS800/PMS system. Interestingly, defects, graphitic N and carbonyl (C=O) groups were vital active sites for PMS activation to produce 1O2, which was facilitated at higher reaction temperature. Besides, the metal sites were identified as PMS activators for SO4·− and ·OH generation, which was promoted under lower reaction temperature. The findings revealed a novel internal temperature-dependent PMS activation mechanism, which can help to regulate the oxidation capacity of PMS activation system rationally for pollutant degradation.

Overlooked Roles and Transformation of Carbon-Centered Radicals Produced from Natural Organic Matter in a Thermally Activated Persulfate System

Abstract:The presence and induced secondary reactions of natural organic matter (NOM) significantly affect the remediation efficacy of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) systems. However, it remains unclear how this process relates to organic radicals generated from reactions between the NOM and oxidants. The study, for the first time, reported the vital roles and transformation pathways of carbon-centered radicals (CCR•) derived from NOM in activated persulfate (PS) systems. Results showed that both typical terrestrial/aquatic NOM isolates and collected NOM samples produced CCR• by scavenging activated PS and greatly enhanced the dehalogenation performance under anoxic conditions. Under oxic conditions, newly formed CCR• could be oxidized by O2 and generate organic peroxide intermediates (ROO•) to catalytically yield additional •OH without the involvement of PS. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) results indicated that CCR• predominantly formed from carboxyl and aliphatic structures instead of aromatics within NOM through hydrogen abstraction and decarboxylation reactions by SO4•- or •OH. Specific anoxic reactions (i.e., dehalogenation and intramolecular cross-coupling reactions) further promoted the transformation of CCR• to more unsaturated and polymerized/condensed compounds. In contrast, oxic propagation of ROO• enhanced bond breakage/ring cleavage and degradation of CCR• due to the presence of additional •OH and self-decomposition. This study provides novel insights into the role of NOM and O2 in ISCO and the development of engineered strategies for creating organic radicals capable of enhancing the remediation of specific contaminants and recovering organic carbon.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation process (PMS-AOP) has shown great potential in sewage purification, and catalyst development capable of efficient PMS activation is a key while challenging element. Herein we reported a facile electro-explosive route to synthesize the oxygen vacancy (Vo)-enriched Mo/MoO2 without using chemical reagents. The detailed studies suggested that the synergy of Mo active site and Vo in the catalyst significantly boosted the activation kinetics of PMS. Evidently, the Mo site of different oxidation states contributed to chemical activation of PMS, while the Vo favored the activation of PMS and the generation of non-radical 1O2 species. As a result, the Mo/MoO2-10 h/PMS system delivered a complete removal of acid orange 7 (AO7) within 4 min, significantly exceeding the activity of Mo/PMS (16%), MoO2-H/PMS (25%) and most of other PMS-based systems. Moreover, the current system showed high potential for removal of different pollutants including antibiotics and organic dyes. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies revealed that the 1O2 species was significant for AO7 decomposition. This work provided a novel strategy to a batch-scale synthesis of high-performance PMS activator for water remediation in practice.
