Abstract:An ultrasonic motor is a promising actuator for robots since it has a simple construction, high response, and high torque at low speeds. This paper proposes a robot hand using vibration-type ultrasonic motors as the fingers instead of moving elements. This robot hand with three fingers can simultaneously grasp and rotate a cylindrical body. The driving characteristics of the robot hand were examined experimentally under various conditions. It was confirmed that high torque was obtained when the optimum contact angle and contact force of the ultrasonic motors were used. The reduction of the output torque is small even when the diameter of the rotational body deviates from the designed value.
Activation of peroxymonosulfate with natural pyrite-biochar composite for sulfamethoxazole degradation in soil: Organic matter effects and free radical conversion

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) represent an effective method for the remediation of antibiotic-contaminated soils. In this study, a natural pyrite-biochar composite material (FBCx) was developed, demonstrating superior activation performance and achieving a 76% removal rate of SMX from soil within 120 min. There existed different degradation mechanisms for SMX in aqueous and soil solutions, respectively. The production of 1 O 2 and inherent active species produced by soil slurry played an important role in the degradation process. The combination of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical probe experiments confirmed the presence of free radical transformation processes in soil. Wherein, the·OH and SO 4 ·− generated in soil slurry did not directly involve in the degradation process, but rather preferentially reacted with soil organic matter (SOM) to form alkyl-like radicals (R·), thereby maintaining a high concentration of reactive species in the system. Furthermore, germination and growth promotion of mung bean seeds observed in the toxicity test indicated the environmental compatibility of this remediation method. This study revealed the influence mechanism of SOM in the remediation process of contaminated soil comprehensively, which possessed enormous potential for application in practical environments.

Abstract:Nonradical oxidation plays a crucial role in the contaminant degradation due to their high selectivity and anti-interference ability. In this study, we report that peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated by MgFe 2 O 4 /MgO modified biochar (MMFBC) achieves almost complete nonradical oxidation process dominated by 1 O 2 for degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The experimental results show that MMFBC exhibits excellent performance for SMX degradation, and is not susceptible to interference from coexisting ions and different water matrices. Oxygen vacancy (OV) and surface − OH groups on MMFBC surface are detected and considered to be crucial for nonradical processes. Characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the co-adsorbed PMS and dissolved oxygen (O 2 ) near OV form a localized high-density electron transfer process. With the premise of hydrogen bonding between PMS and surface − OH groups, PMS acts as an electron donor to OV, which in turn transfers electron to O 2 through the iron cycle involving Fe(II)/Fe(III). Finally, the electron acceptor O 2 undergoes conversion into O 2 − , which subsequently transforms into 1 O 2 to achieve nonradical oxidation processes. This work provides an in-depth investigation into the OV and surface − OH groups mediated nonradical oxidation mechanism, and proposes a novel insight into electron-transfer processes among PMS, O 2 and catalyst.

Facile synthesis of ball-milling and oxalic acid co-modified sludge biochar to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for sulfamethoxazole degradation: 1O2 and surface-bound radicals

Abstract:A novel approach of ball milling and oxalic acid was employed to modify sludge-based biochar (BOSBC) to boost its activation performance for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). 98.6% of SMX was eliminated by PMS/BOSBC system within 60 min. Furthermore, PMS/BOSBC system was capable of maintaining high removal rates for SMX (>88.8%) in a wide pH range from 3 to 9, and displayed a high tolerance to background electrolytes including inorganic ions and humic acid (HA). Quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, in-situ Raman characterization and PMS decomposition experiments confirmed that the non-radicals of 1O2 and surface-bound radicals were the main contributors to SMX degradation by PMS/BOSBC system. The results of ecotoxicity assessment illustrated that all transformed products (TPs) generated in PMS/BOSBC system were less toxic than that of SMX. After five reuse cycles, PMS/BOSBC system still maintained a high removal rate for SMX (77.8%). Additionally, PMS/BOSBC system exhibited excellent degradation performance for SMX in various real waters (Yangtze River water (76.5%), lake water (74.1%), tap water (86.5%), and drinking water (98.1%)). Overall, this study provided novel insights on non-metal modification for sludge-based biochar and non-radical mechanism, and offered a feasible approach for municipal sludge disposal.

Abstract:The treatment of emerging pollutants has become a challenging and multidisciplinary subject. Advanced oxidation processes based on persulfate are a strategic opportunity to address this issue, with research into catalysts and catalytic processes being the focus of this process. In this work, flower-like cobalt sulfide (F-CoS) particles acted as catalysts in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for degrading an organic pollutant, sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results indicated that F-CoS/PMS combined system performed excellently, with SMX being completely oxidized within 10 min. And the system exhibited superior resistance to environmental factors (e.g. pH and anions). Radicals quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses indicated that non-radical pathways based on high-valent cobalt-oxo (Co(IV)) species and 1 O 2 take a dominant position in SMX degradation, instead of SO 4 •- and •OH. Electrochemical, in-situ Raman and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that PMS interacts with Co sites on the F-CoS surface, and then electronic transfer processes occurred, in which PMS acts as an electron acceptor to produce Co(IV) species and as an electron donor to produce 1 O 2 . This study not only implies a method with great potential application in organic wastewater treatment but also contributes to further comprehending the heterogeneous activation process and catalytic mechanism of PMS.

Red Mud Modified Sludge Biochar for the Activation of Peroxymonosulfate: Singlet Oxygen Dominated Mechanism and Toxicity Prediction.

Abstract:In this paper, red mud-sewage sludge derived biochar (RSDBC) was synthesized and employed as the heterogenous activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. With the incorporation of red mud, 825% degradation of SMX was achieved by RSDBC/PMS system in a process dominated by O-1(2), which was attributed to the participation of oxygen vacancy, ketone groups and graphitic carbon. On the other hand, in the absence of red mud, center dot OH and SO4 center dot- were dominantly accounted for SMX degradation in sewage sludge derived biochar (SDBC)/PMS system. In this case heterogeneous Fe species, ketone groups and graphitic carbon were responsible for PMS activation. Due to the different Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), effects of reaction conditions including initial pH, common anions and natural organic matter (NOM) were not in full accord. Besides, Fe leaching from RSDBC (0.67 ppm) was much lower than that of SDBC (3.07 ppm), leading to a better reuse ability for RSDBC. Less degradation intermediates were disclosed in RSDBC/PMS system, along with lower residual toxicity. In addition, eco-toxicity of all the intermediates was predicted by ECOSAR program for the further understanding of the detoxification of SMX. Advantages of RSDBC/PMS system as disclosed in this paper further suggest its potential full-scale application of environmental remediation. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Radicals of SO4 •-, OH•, non-radical of 1O2 and even direct oxidation all occurred in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process. Hence, to regulate the above radical or non-radical mechanism is of great significance for the treatment of organic pollutants in practical water. In this work, MgAl-minerals exhibited a satisfied performance in controlling the contribution of radicals (SO4 •-, OH•) and non-radical (1O2) towards PMS activation based on results of reactive oxygen species scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance spectra. Compared with MgAl-1(61.8%) and MgAl-2 (61.4%) (Al/Mg = 1, 2), MgAl-3 (Al/Mg = 3) exhibited the highest sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal efficiency (92.5%). Moreover, the contribution of radical and non-radical to SMX degradation were 56.7% and 30.1%, which was different from that of MgAl-1(7.8% and 39.5%) and MgAl-2 (5.2% and 41.6%). The roles of Lewis acid-base site and oxygen vacancies (OVs) in MgAl-minerals on radical and non-radical processes were detailed investigated. Lewis acid sites and OVs can enrich SMX and PMS at the solid-water interface. Simultaneously, OVs promote electron transfer from SMX to PMS acts as electron media, resulting in more SO4 •- and OH• generation. While the basic sites favored the generation of 1O2 via PMS self-decomposition mechanism. Therefore, in PMS activation process over MgAl-minerals, the involved reactive oxygen species can be regulated via controlling the amounts of Lewis acid-base sites and oxygen vacancies. This finding provided new insights into PMS oxidation over non-transition metal-based catalysts and water remediation with complex water characteristics.

Mediated Peroxymonosulfate Activation at the Single Atom Fe-N3O1 Sites: Synergistic Degradation of Antibiotics by Two Non-Radical Pathways

Abstract:The activation of persulfates to degrade refractory organic pollutants is a hot issue in advanced oxidation right now. Here, it is reported that single-atom Fe-incorporated carbon nitride (Fe-CN-650) can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Through some characterization techniques and DFT calculation, it is proved that Fe single atoms in Fe-CN-650 exist mainly in the form of Fe-N3O1 coordination, and Fe-N3O1 exhibited better affinity for PMS than the traditional Fe-N4 structure. The degradation rate constant of SMX in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system reached 0.472 min-1, and 90.80% of SMX can still be effectively degraded within 10 min after five consecutive recovery cycles. The radical quenching experiment and electrochemical analysis confirm that the pollutants are mainly degraded by two non-radical pathways through 1O2 and Fe(IV)═O induced at the Fe-N3O1 sites. In addition, the intermediate products of SMX degradation in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system show toxicity attenuation or non-toxicity. This study offers valuable insights into the design of carbon-based single-atom catalysts and provides a potential remediation technology for the optimum activation of PMS to disintegrate organic pollutants.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was investigated through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by the synthesized flower-like Fe3S4, which showed the best performance with the highest reaction stoichiometric efficiency (7.9%). 99% of SMX (2 mg/L) was eliminated from reaction solution during 30 min with 20 mg/L Fe3S4 and 0.1 mM PMS. The main reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the contaminant decomposition were investigated through quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization. In addition to the typical sulfate radical (SO4 •-) and hydroxyl radical (HO•), it should be noted that non-radical singlet oxygen (1O2) was generated and participated in the catalytic oxidation of compounds. The degradation of SMX in the PMS alone system through non-radical pathway and in the Fe3S4/PMS system by both radical and non-radical pathways were proposed according to the detected intermediates. The ecotoxicity of SMX and its by-products were evaluated through the quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. The present study provided new insight into the mechanism of organic compound removal by ROS including radical and non-radical in Fe3S4/PMS system.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene (NRGO) can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). However, the activation mechanism of PMS by NRGO needs to be further investigated. In this study NRGO was prepared by a facile method, and its activation mechanism of PMS for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was investigated. The XPS spectrum showed that nitrogen loading reached 16.5% (atomic percentage). The SMX removal efficiency reached 91.7% at 240 min in the NRGO-activated PMS system. During the PMS activation process, NRGO acted as dual roles: PMS activator and electron transfer mediator. NRGO can activate PMS to form singlet oxygen. In addition, NRGO can act as the electron transfer mediator to enhance the SMX degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that nitrogen doping increased the charge density of net positive carbon atoms and decreased the energy gap, further enhancing the PMS activation. The effects of pH, temperature and the concentrations of chloridion and humic acid were investigated. NRGO had good stability in activating PMS evidenced by the cycling experiments. Eight degradation intermediate products of SMX was identified. Among them, 3-amino-5-methyl-isoxazole and 4-nitro-SMX presented high abundance. The acute toxicity of treated SMX solution increased, suggesting that the degradation products of SMX formed in the non-radicals' process should be concerned. This study provided an insight into the SMX degradation by NRGO-activated PMS including the mechanisms of PMS activation and SMX degradation.
Effective Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Oxygen Vacancy Induced Musa Basjoo Biochar to Degrade Sulfamethoxazole: Efficiency and Mechanism

Abstract:Biochar materials have garnered attention as potential catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation due to their cost-effectiveness, notable specific surface area, and advantageous structural properties. In this study, a suite of plantain-derived biochar (MBB-400, MBB-600, and MBB-800), possessing a well-defined pore structure and a substantial number of uniformly distributed active sites (oxygen vacancy, OVs), was synthesized through a facile calcination process at varying temperatures (400, 600, and 800 °C). These materials were designed for the activation of PMS in the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Experimental investigations revealed that OVs not only functioned as enriched sites for pollutants, enhancing the opportunities for free radicals (•OH/SO4•−) and surface-bound radicals (SBRs) to attack pollutants, but also served as channels for intramolecular charge transfer leaps. This role contributed to a reduction in interfacial charge transfer resistance, expediting electron transfer rates with PMS, thereby accelerating the decomposition of pollutants. Capitalizing on these merits, the MBB-800/PMS system displayed a 61-fold enhancement in the conversion rate for SMX degradation compared to inactivated MBB/PMS system. Furthermore, the MBB-800 exhibited less cytotoxicity towards rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. Hence, the straightforward calcination synthesis of MBB-800 emerges as a promising biochar catalyst with vast potential for sustainable and efficient wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Since the discovery of the potential environmental risk associated with large quantities of red mud, there has been an urgent need to find a rational disposal technology for this waste. In this study, low-cost iron-based biochar catalysts ( x ) were synthesized by co-pyrolysis of waste red mud and spent coffee grounds after ball milling. exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity, reaching 4.70 mg/g in 120 min. The adsorbed SMX was degraded simultaneously after adding peroxodisulfate (PDS), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was completely removed from the solution in only 30 min. Correlation analysis and pre-sorption experiment proved that the adsorption of SMX significantly enhanced the oxidation effect. Moreover, the Fe 0 , defects and CO groups of were the main active sites. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) played a dominant role in the degradation of SMX rather than the traditional radicals (•OH or SO 4 •− ). In particular, O 2 •− was shown to be used mainly as a precursor for the production of 1 O 2 without directly oxidizing SMX. The steady state concentration of 1 O 2 has been calculated to be hundreds or thousands of times higher than that of other radicals. Five degradation pathways of SMX were proposed (including NS bond cleavage, hydroxylation, and –NH 2 oxidation). has the advantages of strong anti-interference ability, low iron leaching based on energy calculations and environmental impact assessments. This work provides a new option for the resource utilization of red mud and designs a green material with fast adsorption and efficient catalysis for the practical treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

Abstract:Application of activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate sulfate radical or hydroxyl radical is a promising strategy for wastewater treatment, while our knowledge on the background reaction, namely, the direct interaction between PMS and target contaminants is quite limited. In this contribution, the degradation kinetics, stoichiometry, products and mechanism of the reaction between unactivated PMS and trimethoprim (TMP), one of the most commonly detected micro-pollutants in the aquatic system were investigated systematically. The results indicated that TMP was susceptible to degradation by direct PMS oxidation via a non-radical process. By recording the decay of two reactants simultaneously, the stoichiometric ratio between PMS and TMP was estimated to be approximately 1. Higher PMS levels exhibited a promotion effect on PMS decay. And the degradation was pH-dependent, basic conditions were favorable for TMP degradation, which could be well modeled based on the species-specific reactions. The two amine groups on the pyrimidine ring were identified as the reactive sites. After direct attacks by PMS, they would be oxidized to form hydroxylamine-products, namely, N8-OH-TMP and N9-OH-TMP. These two hydroxylamine-products were quite stable and resistant to further oxidation by PMS, preventing the formation of more toxic nitroso- and nitro-products. The new findings in the present work would provide beneficial information on the strategy choice for the elimination of specific pollutants, like TMP, as PMS also exhibits relatively high reactivity towards them.

Abstract:Animal-derived biochar are identified as a promising candidate for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation due to the abundant aromatics and oxygen-containing functional groups. The current investigation focuses on pig carcass-derived biochar (800-BA-PBC) by ball milling-assisted alkali activation. The results showed that 800-BAPBC could effectively activate PMS and degraded 94.2% sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 10 mg/L) within 40 min. The reaction rate constant was found to be 47 times higher than that observed with PBC. The enhanced catalytic activity is mainly attributed to the increase in specific surface area, the increase content of oxygen-containing groups on the surface, and the formation of graphitic nitrogen. The quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis demonstrated that 1O2 is the main active species in the degradation of SMX. Moreover, the 800-BA-PBC + PMS system can maintain excellent degradation rate under different water quality, wide pH range, and the presence of different anions. The degradation pathways of SMX in the optimal system are also evaluated through intermediate identification and DFT calculation. These results indicate that the catalytic system has high anti-interference ability and practical application potential. This investigation provides new insight into the rational design of animal-derived biochar and develops a low-cost technology for the treatment of antibiotic containing wastewater.

Abstract:A novel oxidation system of in-situ electrogenerated persulfate (EO-PS) derived from sulphate in water and its activation by Fe/Mn bimetal co-functionalized sludge biochar (Fe/Mn-SBC) was built in this study to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The result showed that 98.8% of SMX was degraded within 60 min in EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system. The abundant defect structures, oxygen-containing functional groups, Mn(Ⅱ)/Mn(Ⅲ) and magnetic Fe3O4 on Fe/Mn-SBC surface guaranteed its outstanding activation performance for EO-PS. The quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments confirmed that non-radicals of 1O2 and surface-bound radicals were the dominant contributors for SMX elimination. The pathway Ⅰ and Ⅲ were proposed to be the main pathways of SMX degradation in EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system based on its transformed products (TPs) identification and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Overall, the TPs of SMX generated in EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system were less toxic to aquatic organisms compared to that of SMX. Also, EO/Fe/Mn-SBC/Na2SO4 system displayed favorable degradation performance for SMX in real waters (98.5%, 91.1%, 84.8%, 81.2% and 77.4% in pure water, tap water, river water, lake water and sewage effluent, respectively). Additionally, Fe/Mn-SBC exhibited the easy magnetic separation, excellent reusability and environmental safety. This study developed a promising technology of in-situ EO-PS and its activation by carbon-based material for SMX elimination without addition of exogenous PS, in addition to that the resource utilization of sewage sludge and wastewater sulphate were simultaneously achieved.

Abstract:Developing an efficient, low-cost and stable catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for pollutant degradation is crucial in environmental remediation. Herein, Co1Fe1 layered double hydroxide (Co1Fe1-LDH) was in situ loaded on biochar (BC) derived from rape straw for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation via activating PMS. It could be found that the optimal catalyst (BC/Co1Fe1-LDH-4) exhibited the highest SMX degradation efficiency of 94.8% within 5 min reaction, far more than the pristine Co1Fe1-LDH (58.5%), which might be ascribed to the synergistic effects between Co1Fe1-LDH and BC during reaction. For one thing, BC itself participated in the catalytic degradation reaction as an activator and made the catalyst have excellent adsorption and degradation performance. For another, BC as a carrier not only effectively inhibited the agglomeration of Co1Fe1-LDH to increase the active sites, but also accelerated the Co2+/Co3+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ cycles to reduce the leaching of metal ions. Meanwhile the leaching of trace metal ions also promoted the degradation of SMX to a certain extent, indicating that the catalytic mechanism was the combination of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, and the latter was dominant. The quenching trials, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electrochemical measurements implied that the radical and non-radical processes were involved in the reaction, where SO4·-, ·OH and O2·- were the main radical species to drive the radical process, and 1O2 and direct electron transfer were responsible for the non-radical process. In addition, the possible SMX degradation pathways were reasonably proposed by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) tests and SMX mineralization degree was provided through total organic carbon (TOC) measurements. This present work provides a new insight to construct the highly efficient PMS activation catalyst for environment wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Active sites on catalyst surface play significant roles in oxidative species formation. The work focused on the regulation of main active sites on catalyst surface and oxidative species formation. Herein, sewage sludge (SS)-red mud (RM) complex biochar (SRCB) and N-functionalized SRCB (NSRCB) were served as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfanilamide (SMX) degradation. Specially, NSRCB-1 showed excellent catalytic performance with 97.5% removal of SMX within 110 min. Additionally, the effects of N incorporation on the reconstruction of N species, conversion of intrinsic Fe species and ketonic CO groups in SRCB were studied systematically. Both radical (hydroxyl radicals (OH), sulfate radicals (SO4-) and superoxide radical (O2-)) and non-radical (electron transfer and singlet oxygen (1O2)) pathways were confirmed by quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) testing and electrochemical measurements. Ketonic CO groups, pyridinic N and pyrrolic N were responsible for non-radical pathway in SMX degradation process. Besides, Fe(II) modulated by N-doping was the main actives site for radicals generation. The contribution of active sites on catalyst surface to oxidative species formation provided fundamental basis for practical water treatment in PMS process.

Abstract:High efficient activator is highly desired in the field of persulfate-based advanced oxidation process. In comparison with the previous studies, this study adopted nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen co-doped carbon material to support Fe-0 encapsulate in Fe3O4 to prepare iron-based modified carbon composite (Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC) by a facile two-step pyrolysis. Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC was then used for degradation of sulfamethoxazole. The results showed that Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC had superior catalytic activity for PMS activation due to the synergistic effect of iron-based compound and modified carbon. In the presence of 0.1 g/L of Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC, SMX (0.04 mM) could be completely degraded within 120 mM at pH 3.4 and 3 mM of PMS. The SMX degradation followed pseudo first-order kinetic model, with the rate constant of 0.12 min(-1), and the mineralization of SMX achieved 48.4%. Sulfate radicals dominated in the SMX degradation. In addition to Fe-0 and Fe3O4, carbon defects, graphitic N, sulfur and FeN4 also contributed to PMS activation. Fe-0 oxidation was the rate-limiting step for PMS activation. Dissolved oxygen made a minor contribution to Fe-0 oxidation. The intermediate products of SMX degradation were identified, and two pathways of SMX degradation were proposed. The influencing factors on SMX degradation were studied, including pH, temperature, PMS concentration, Fe-0@Fe3O4-MC dosage, chloridion, carbonate and humic acids, and the influencing mechanism was discussed. This study could provide an efficient PMS activator for the degradation of emerging organic pollutants in water and wastewater.

Abstract:Direct electron-transfer dominated organic pollutant removal technology is considered an economical and promising method for selective water and wastewater treatment. However, in the heterogeneous catalysis of activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate the surface-bound PMS*, reactive oxygen species such as sulfate radical, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen are easily produced at the same time, resulting in waste of PMS. Herein, we reported an efficient zinc single-atom catalyst (Zn-N@C) that could activate PMS to induce an electron-transfer mechanism and degrade 95.7% sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 20 min, which was superior to most of the advanced oxidation systems that have been reported for the removal of SMX. The negligible effect of anions and humic acid in water on Zn-N@C/PMS systems made it potential for practical application. Experiments and density functional theory calculations revealed that ZnN4 as the active site for PMS activation, and the enhanced redox potential of Zn-N@C/PMS* complexes improved the removal efficiency of SMX by demonstrating the increased work function and enlarged electron density near the Fermi level of Zn-N@C after PMS adsorption. SMX was degraded predominately via SO2 extrusion, hydroxylation, and cleavage of the S–N and S–C bonds. The diminished ecotoxicity of transformation products suggested a controlled risk of SMX degradation during the Zn-N@C/PMS treatment process. This study expands the research scope of transitional metal-based single-atom catalysts to zinc on PMS activation and deepens the understanding of electron-transfer oxidation pathways.

Abstract:Groundwater contamination by sulfonamides (SAs) has aroused great concern due to their potential risks to ecosystem and public health. In this work, degradation of SAs with different substituents was studied via a single oxygen dominated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process. Recoverable hierarchical CuO/MgO nanosheets (NSs) with highly exposure of active sites and open diffusion channels was employed as a PMS activator. The degradation behavior of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfamethazine (SMZ), sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamerazine (SMR) and sulfathiazole (STZ) was studied via batch reactions, revealing an efficient heterogeneous oxidation process. In a fixed-bed column of the supported hierarchical CuO/MgO NSs, simultaneous degradation of the five SAs in complicated water matrix was observed with high removal efficiency, long-term stability and strong anti-interference capability toward background constituents of groundwaters. Kinetic experiments and mechanistic study elucidated PMS was activated by CuO and MgO synergically that incorporating with defective-rich MgO induced highly oxidative Cu 3+ . The activation of PMS over MgO was mediated by surface oxygen vacancies, while thermal feasible redox cycle of Cu 3+ /Cu 2+ responsible for the activation of PMS over defective CuO. This study may help to understand the simultaneous degradation of different SAs in a nonradical oxidation process and provide a feasible technology for in-situ remediation of SAs-contaminated groundwater.
