Abstract:The present study was designed to discover whether pre-testing with the conditioned stimulus (CS) would affect extinction of the conditioned eyelid response to light.' Many conditioning experiments have employed preliminary adaptation (pre-testing) trials in which the CS was presented alone before the reinforcing trials were given. In view of the fact that S obviously learns to respond to overall characteristics of the sequences of reinforcing trials, it is quite possible that adaptation-series produce measurable effects upon the course of subsequent extinction.2 Broadly speaking, a pre-tested S has learned to respond following what may be considered extinction trials during the pre-test; and, therefore, may continue to respond longer, or even at a greater rate, after future extinction trials than would an S who had received no pre-test. It was to investigate this possibility that the present experiment was conducted. Apparatus and general procedure were similar to that of previous experiments.3
