Abstract:Purpose This article considers Inverse Gaussian distribution as the basic lifetime model for the test units. The unknown model parameters are estimated using the method of moments, the method of maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. As part of maximum likelihood analysis, this article employs an expectation-maximization algorithm to simplify numerical computation. Subsequently, Bayesian estimates are obtained using the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm. This article then presents the design of optimal censoring schemes using a design criterion that deals with the precision of a particular system lifetime quantile. The optimal censoring schemes are obtained after taking into account budget constraints. Design/methodology/approach This article first presents classical and Bayesian statistical inference for Progressive Type-I Interval censored data. Subsequently, this article considers the design of optimal Progressive Type-I Interval censoring schemes after incorporating budget constraints. Findings A real dataset is analyzed to demonstrate the methods developed in this article. The adequacy of the lifetime model is ensured using a simulation-based goodness-of-fit test. Furthermore, the performance of various estimators is studied using a detailed simulation experiment. It is observed that the maximum likelihood estimator relatively outperforms the method of moment estimator. Furthermore, the posterior median fares better among Bayesian estimators even in the absence of any subjective information. Furthermore, it is observed that the budget constraints have real implications on the optimal design of censoring schemes. Originality/value The proposed methodology may be used for analyzing any Progressive Type-I Interval Censored data for any lifetime model. The methodology adopted to obtain the optimal censoring schemes may be particularly useful for reliability engineers in real-life applications.

Abstract:In many applications involving follow-up studies, individuals' lifetimes may be subject to both left and right censoring. In this paper we consider regressing the median of the lifetime variable or a transformation thereof on the corresponding covariates when the lifetimes are subject to both left and right censoring and the values of both censoring variables are always observable. A semiparametric inferential procedure is proposed and the asymptotic properties of the proposed method are discussed. We also propose an alternative empirical likelihood based inferential procedure for the regression coefficients vector. Moreover, we make some discussion on classical doubly censored data whose censoring variables cannot always be observed. The proposed methods are illustrated by some simulation studies.

Abstract:Summary Longitudinal data arise when subjects are followed over a period of time. A commonly encountered complication in the analysis of such data is the variable length of follow‐up due to right censorship. This can be further exacerbated by the possible dependency between the censoring time and the longitudinal measurements. This article proposes a combination of a semiparametric transformation model for the censoring time and a linear mixed effects model for the longitudinal measurements. The dependency is handled via latent variables which are naturally incorporated. We show that the likelihood function has an explicit form and develops a two‐stage estimation procedure to avoid direct maximization over a high‐dimensional parameter space. The resulting estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal, with a closed form for the variance–covariance matrix that can be used to obtain a plug‐in estimator. Finite sample performance of the proposed approach is assessed through extensive simulations. The method is applied to renal disease data.

Abstract:A number of models for generating statistical data in various fields of insurance, including life insurance, pensions, and general insurance have been considered. It is shown that the insurance statistics data, as a rule, are truncated and censored, and often multivariate. We propose a non-parametric estimation of the distribution function for multivariate truncated-censored data in the form of a quasi-empirical distribution and a simple iterative algorithm for its construction. To check the accuracy of the proposed evaluation of the distribution function for truncated-censored data, simulation studies have been conducted, which showed its high efficiency. The proposed estimates have been tested for many years by the IAAC Group of Companies in the actuarial valuation of corporate social liabilities according to IAS 19 Employee Benefits. Apart from insurance, some results of the work can be used, for example in medicine, biology, demography, mathematical theory of reliability, etc.

Abstract:Working on product lifetime data is of significant importance for evaluating safety and reliability, predicting remaining useful life and formulating maintenance strategy or replacement policy. In practical applications, observed datasets often consist of failure data and randomly censored data, which are referred as general censored data. Meanwhile, inverse Gaussian (IG) distribution has been widely adopted to depict lifetime data because it not only can possess flexible expression formats but also can explain the mechanism of first hitting time from a soft failure viewpoint. Motivated by these two regards, this paper develops a novel method on best linear unbiased estimations (BLUEs) for general censored data. A three-parameter IG distribution type is adopted. A novel method is established to optimize the skewness parameter. Then, BLUEs of mean and standard deviation can be obtained. The proposed method can construct closed-form parameter estimations in linear functions of order statistics. The computation process has been further simplified for flexible applications. The frequently utilized maximum likelihood estimation method is also introduced as a reference for a better understanding. Comparative results of both comprehensive simulation study and empirical application illustrate that the proposed method can significantly enhance the estimation accuracy and keep a stable performance, because more life information can be extracted and adopted from the censored datasets.

Abstract:In this article, the parameter estimation of several commonly used two-parameter lifetime distributions, including the Weibull, inverse Gaussian, and Birnbaum–Saunders distributions, based on joint progressively Type-II right-censored sample is studied. Different numerical methods and algorithms are used to compute the maximum likelihood estimates of the unknown model parameters. These methods include the Newton–Raphson method, the stochastic expectation–maximization (SEM) algorithm, and the dual annealing (DA) algorithm. These estimation methods are compared in terms of accuracy (e.g. the bias and mean squared error), computational time and effort (e.g. the required number of iterations), the ability to obtain the largest value of the likelihood, and convergence issues by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study. Recommendations are made based on the simulated results. A real data set is analyzed for illustrative purposes. These methods are implemented in Python, and the computer programs are available from the authors upon request.

Abstract:We propose some new diagnostic tests for duration models -popularly used in economics, finance and other fields -using a computationally simple empirical survival function that utilizes information from censored observations. The impact of parameter estimation uncertainty is properly addressed, ensuring that the proposed tests have an asymptotically valid Type I error. A simple resampling method is used to obtain critical values for the proposed tests, and extensions to unobserved heterogeneity and competing risk are also considered. A simulation study shows that the proposed tests have reasonable sizes and good powers in finite samples.

Abstract:The Gini coefficient of the life table is a concentration index that provides information on lifespan variation. Originally proposed by economists to measure income and wealth inequalities, it has been widely used in population studies to investigate variation in ages at death. We focus on a complementary indicator, Drewnowski's index, which is as a measure of equality. We study its mathematical properties and analyze how changes over time relate to changes in life expectancy. Further, we identify the threshold age below which mortality improvements are translated into decreasing lifespan variation and above which these improvements translate into increasing lifespan inequality. We illustrate our theoretical findings simulating scenarios of mortality improvement in the Gompertz model. Our experiments demonstrate how Drewnowski's index can serve as an indicator of the shape of mortality patterns. These properties, along with our analytical findings, support studying lifespan variation alongside life expectancy trends in multiple species.

Abstract:This paper considers the order-restricted statistical inference for two populations based on the joint type-II progressive censoring scheme. The lifetime distributions of the two populations are supposed to follow the Gompertz distribution with the same shape parameter but different scale parameters. The maximum likelihood estimates of the unknown parameters are derived by employing the Newton-Raphson algorithm and the expectation-maximization algorithm, respectively. The Fisher information matrix is then employed to construct asymptotic confidence intervals. For Bayes estimation, we assume an ordered Beta-Gamma prior for the scale parameters and a Gamma prior for the common shape parameter. Bayes estimations and the highest posterior density credible intervals for unknown parameters under two different loss functions are obtained with the importance sampling technique. To evaluate the performance of order-restricted inference, extensive Monte Carlo simulations are performed and two air-conditioning systems datasets are used to illustrate the proposed inference methods. In addition, the results are compared with the case when there is no order restriction on the parameters. Finally, the optimal censoring scheme is obtained by four optimality criteria.

Abstract:We study the problems related to the estimation of the Gini index in presence of a fat-tailed data generating process, i.e. one in the stable distribution class with finite mean but infinite variance (i.e. with tail index $\alpha\in(1,2)$). We show that, in such a case, the Gini coefficient cannot be reliably estimated using conventional nonparametric methods, because of a downward bias that emerges under fat tails. This has important implications for the ongoing discussion about economic inequality. We start by discussing how the nonparametric estimator of the Gini index undergoes a phase transition in the symmetry structure of its asymptotic distribution, as the data distribution shifts from the domain of attraction of a light-tailed distribution to that of a fat-tailed one, especially in the case of infinite variance. We also show how the nonparametric Gini bias increases with lower values of $\alpha$. We then prove that maximum likelihood estimation outperforms nonparametric methods, requiring a much smaller sample size to reach efficiency. Finally, for fat-tailed data, we provide a simple correction mechanism to the small sample bias of the nonparametric estimator based on the distance between the mode and the mean of its asymptotic distribution.

Abstract:We develop inference procedures for longitudinal data where some of the measurements are censored by fixed constants. We consider a semi-parametric quantile regression model that makes no distributional assumptions. Our research is motivated by the lack of proper inference procedures for data from biomedical studies where measurements are censored due to a fixed quantification limit. In such studies the focus is often on testing hypotheses about treatment equality. To this end, we propose a rank score test for large sample inference on a subset of the covariates. We demonstrate the importance of accounting for both censoring and intra-subject dependency and evaluate the performance of our proposed methodology in a simulation study. We then apply the proposed inference procedures to data from an AIDS-related clinical trial. We conclude that our framework and proposed methodology is very valuable for differentiating the influences of predictors at different locations in the conditional distribution of a response variable.

Abstract:This paper discusses regression analysis of right-censored failure time data when censoring indicators are missing for some subjects. Several methods have been developed for the analysis under different situations and especially, Goetghebeur and Ryan[4] considered the situation where both the failure time and the censoring time follow the proportional hazards models marginally and developed an estimating equation approach. One limitation of their approach is that the two baseline hazard functions were assumed to be proportional to each other. We consider the same problem and present an efficient estimation procedure for regression parameters that does not require the proportionality assumption. An EM algorithm is developed and the method is evaluated by a simulation study, which indicates that the proposed methodology performs well for practical situations. An illustrative example is provided.

Abstract:Independent censoring is usually assumed in survival data analysis. However, dependent censoring, where the survival time is dependent on the censoring time, is often seen in real data applications. In this project, we model the vector of survival time and censoring time marginally through semiparametric heteroscedastic accelerated failure time models and model their association by the vector of errors in the model. We show that this semiparametric model is identified, and the generalized estimating equation approach is extended to estimate the parameters in this model. It is shown that the estimators of the model parameters are consistent and asymptotically normal. Simulation studies are conducted to compare it with the estimation method under a parametric model. A real dataset from a prostate cancer study is used for illustration of the new proposed method.

Abstract:Consider a situation where one is interested in estimating the density of a survival time that is subject to random right censoring and measurement errors. This happens often in practice, like in public health (pregnancy length), medicine (duration of infection), ecology (duration of forest fire), among others. We assume a classical additive measurement error model with Gaussian noise and unknown error variance and a random right censoring scheme. Under this setup, we develop minimal conditions under which the assumed model is identifiable when no auxiliary variables or validation data are available, and we offer a flexible estimation strategy using Laguerre polynomials for the estimation of the error variance and the density of the survival time. The asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators is established, and the numerical performance of the methodology is investigated on both simulated and real data on gestational age.

Abstract:The nonparametric estimator of the conditional survival function proposed by Beran is a useful tool to evaluate the effects of covariates in the presence of random right censoring. However, censoring indicators of right censored data may be missing for different reasons in many applications. We propose some estimators of the conditional cumulative hazard and survival functions which allow to handle this situation. We also construct the likelihood ratio confidence bands for them and obtain their asymptotic properties. Simulation studies are used to evaluate the performances of the estimators and their confidence bands.

Abstract:This paper discusses regression analysis of case K interval-censored failure time data, a general type of failure time data, in the presence of informative censoring with the focus on simultaneous variable selection and estimation. Although many authors have considered the challenging variable selection problem for interval-censored data, most of the existing methods assume independent or non-informative censoring. More importantly, the existing methods that allow for informative censoring are frailty model-based approaches and cannot directly assess the degree of informative censoring among other shortcomings. To address these, we propose a conditional approach and develop a penalized sieve maximum likelihood procedure for the simultaneous variable selection and estimation of covariate effects. Furthermore, we establish the oracle property of the proposed method and illustrate the appropriateness and usefulness of the approach using a simulation study. Finally we apply the proposed method to a set of real data on Alzheimer's disease and provide some new insights.

Abstract:With few exceptions, spontaneous mutation frequency and pattern are similar across tissue types and relatively constant in young to middle adulthood in wild type mice. Underrepresented in surveys of spontaneous mutations across murine tissues is the diversity of epithelial tissues. For the first time, spontaneous mutations were detected in pancreas and submaxillary gland and compared with kidney, lung, and male germ cells from five adult male Big Blue® mice. Mutation load was assessed quantitatively through measurement of mutant and mutation frequency and qualitatively through identification of mutations and characterization of recurrent mutations, multiple mutations, mutation pattern, and mutation spectrum. A total of 9.6 million plaque forming units were screened, 226 mutants were collected, and 196 independent mutations were identified. Four novel mutations were discovered. Spontaneous mutation frequency was low in pancreas and high in the submaxillary gland. The submaxillary gland had multiple recurrent mutations in each of the mice and one mutant had two independent mutations. Mutation patterns for epithelial tissues differed from that observed in male germ cells with a striking bias for G:C to A:T transitions at CpG sites. A comprehensive review of lacI spontaneous mutation patterns in young adult mice and rats identified additional examples of this mutational bias. An overarching observation about spontaneous mutation frequency in adult tissues of the mouse remains one of stability. A repeated observation in certain epithelial tissues is a higher rate of G:C to A:T transitions at CpG sites and the underlying mechanisms for this bias are not known. Environ. Mol.
