Abstract:In many applications involving follow-up studies, individuals' lifetimes may be subject to both left and right censoring. In this paper we consider regressing the median of the lifetime variable or a transformation thereof on the corresponding covariates when the lifetimes are subject to both left and right censoring and the values of both censoring variables are always observable. A semiparametric inferential procedure is proposed and the asymptotic properties of the proposed method are discussed. We also propose an alternative empirical likelihood based inferential procedure for the regression coefficients vector. Moreover, we make some discussion on classical doubly censored data whose censoring variables cannot always be observed. The proposed methods are illustrated by some simulation studies.

Abstract:This paper discusses the estimation of parameters in the quantile regression model for dependent truncated data. To account for the dependence between the survival time and the truncated time, the Archimedean copula model is used to construct the association. The parameters of the Archimedean copula model are estimated using certain existing approaches. An inference procedure based on a weighted approach is proposed, where the weights are set according to the variables of interest in the quantile regression model. The finite sample performance of the proposed approach is examined through simulations, and the method is applied to analyze two real datasets: the transfusion-related AIDS dataset and the retirement community center dataset.

Abstract:The median is a simple and meaningful measure for the center of a long-tailed survival distribution. To examine the covariate effects on survival, a natural alternative to the usual mean regression model is to regress the median of the failure time variable or a transformation thereof on the covariates. In this article we propose semiparametric procedures to make inferences for such median regression models with possibly censored observations. Our proposals can be implemented efficiently using a simulated annealing algorithm. Numerical studies are conducted to show the advantage of the new procedures over some recently developed methods for the accelerated failure time model, a special type of mean regression models in the survival analysis. The proposals discussed in the article are illustrated with a lung cancer data set.

Abstract:We propose a new class of semiparametric regression models of mean residual life for censored outcome data. The models, which enable us to estimate the expected remaining survival time and generalize commonly used mean residual life models, also conduct covariate dimension reduction. Using the geometric approaches in semiparametrics literature and the martingale properties with survival data, we propose a flexible inference procedure that relaxes the parametric assumptions on the dependence of mean residual life on covariates and how long a patient has lived. We show that the estimators for the covariate effects are root-$n$ consistent, asymptotically normal, and semiparametrically efficient. With the unspecified mean residual life function, we provide a nonparametric estimator for predicting the residual life of a given subject, and establish the root-$n$ consistency and asymptotic normality for this estimator. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed estimators. We apply the method to analyze a national kidney transplantation dataset to further demonstrate the utility of the work.

Abstract:A class of rank estimators is introduced for regression analysis in the presence of both left-truncation and right-censoring on the response variable. By making use of martingale theory and a tightness lemma for stochastic integrals of multiparameter empirical processes, the asymptotic normality of the estimators is established under certain assumptions. Adaptive choice of the score functions to give asymptotically efficient rank estimators is also discussed.
Copula-based Semiparametric Nonnormal Transformed Linear Model for Survival Data with Dependent Censoring

Abstract:Although the independent censoring assumption is commonly used in survival analysis, it can be violated when the censoring time is related to the survival time, which often happens in many practical applications. To address this issue, we propose a flexible semiparametric method for dependent censored data. Our approach involves fitting the survival time and the censoring time with a joint transformed linear model, where the transformed function is unspecified. This allows for a very general class of models that can account for possible covariate effects, while also accommodating administrative censoring. We assume that the transformed variables have a bivariate nonnormal distribution based on parametric copulas and parametric marginals, which further enhances the flexibility of our method. We demonstrate the identifiability of the proposed model and establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the model parameters under appropriate regularity conditions and assumptions. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our method through extensive simulation studies, and provide a real data example for illustration.

Abstract:The paper discusses the regression analysis of current status data, which is common in various fields such as tumorigenic research and demographic studies. Analyzing this type of data poses a significant challenge and has recently gained considerable interest. Furthermore, the authors consider an even more difficult scenario where, apart from censoring, one also faces left-truncation and informative censoring, meaning that there is a potential correlation between the examination time and the failure time of interest. The authors propose a sieve maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method and in the proposed method for inference, a copula-based procedure is applied to depict the informative censoring. Also the authors utilise the splines to estimate the unknown nonparametric functions in the model, and the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator are established. The simulation results indicate that the developed approach is effective in practice, and it has been successfully applied a set of real data.

Abstract:Truncated data are commonly observed in economics, epidemiology, and other fields. The analysis of truncated data is challenging because the observed data are usually a biased sample of the target population due to truncation. Existing methods of handling truncated data largely depend on conditional likelihood which is the joint distribution of the data given that they are observed, and may be unreliable or have potential efficiency loss. In this paper, the authors develop a maximum full likelihood inference method for truncated data under a parametric model for the conditional distribution of the target variable given covatiates. The distribution of the truncation variable is left unspecified. The authors establish the asymptotic normalities of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) for various parameters, and the likelihood ratio statistics have central chisquare limiting distributions. As a by-product, the proposed method provides a natural MLE for the total number of the observed and unobserved data, which may shed light on the extent of truncation bias. A score test is provided to check the correctness of the assumed parametric model. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed estimation method generally produces more reliable point and interval estimates. For illustration, the authors apply the proposed approaches to analyze a breast cancer data in the Rotterdam Tumor Bank.

Abstract:The analysis left truncated and right censored data is very common in survival and reliability analysis. In lifetime studies patients often subject to left truncation in addition to right censoring. For example, in bone marrow transplant studies based on International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry (IBMTR), the patients who die while waiting for the transplants will not be reported to the IBMTR. In this paper, we develop novel U-statistics under left truncation and right censoring. We prove the $\sqrt{n}$-consistency of the proposed U-statistics. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the U-statistics using counting process technique. As an application of the U-statistics, we develop a simple non-parametric test for testing the independence between time to failure and cause of failure in competing risks when the observations are subject to left truncation and right censoring. The finite sample performance of the proposed test is evaluated through Monte Carlo simulation study. Finally we illustrate our test procedure using lifetime data of transformers.

Abstract:Doubly truncated data are found in astronomy, econometrics and survival analysis literature. They arise when each observation is confined to an interval, i.e., only those which fall within their respective intervals are observed along with the intervals. Unlike the one-sided truncation that can be handled by counting process-based approach, doubly truncated data are much more difficult to handle. In their analysis of an astronomical data set, Efron and Petrosian (1999) proposed some nonparametric methods for doubly truncated data. Motivated by their approach, as well as by the work of Bhattacharya et al. (1983) for right truncated data, we propose a general method for estimating the regression parameter when the dependent variable is subject to the double truncation. It extends the Mann-Whitney-type rank estimator and can be computed easily by existing software packages. Weighted rank estimation are also considered for improving estimation efficiency. We show that the resulting estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal. Resampling schemes are proposed with large sample justification for approximating the limiting distributions. The quasar data in Efron and Petrosian (1999) and an AIDS incubation data are analyzed by the new method. Simulation results show that the proposed method works well.

Abstract:Learning causal effects of a binary exposure on time-to-event endpoints can be challenging because survival times may be partially observed due to censoring and systematically biased due to truncation. In this work, we present debiased machine learning-based nonparametric estimators of the joint distribution of a counterfactual survival time and baseline covariates for use when the observed data are subject to covariate-dependent left truncation and right censoring and when baseline covariates suffice to deconfound the relationship between exposure and survival time. Our inferential procedures explicitly allow the integration of flexible machine learning tools for nuisance estimation, and enjoy certain robustness properties. The approach we propose can be directly used to make pointwise or uniform inference on smooth summaries of the joint counterfactual survival time and covariate distribution, and can be valuable even in the absence of interventions, when summaries of a marginal survival distribution are of interest. We showcase how our procedures can be used to learn a variety of inferential targets and illustrate their performance in simulation studies.

Abstract:This paper discusses regression analysis of right-censored failure time data when censoring indicators are missing for some subjects. Several methods have been developed for the analysis under different situations and especially, Goetghebeur and Ryan[4] considered the situation where both the failure time and the censoring time follow the proportional hazards models marginally and developed an estimating equation approach. One limitation of their approach is that the two baseline hazard functions were assumed to be proportional to each other. We consider the same problem and present an efficient estimation procedure for regression parameters that does not require the proportionality assumption. An EM algorithm is developed and the method is evaluated by a simulation study, which indicates that the proposed methodology performs well for practical situations. An illustrative example is provided.

Abstract:Lifetime data is often right-censored. Recent literature on the Gini index estimation with censored data focuses on independent censoring. However, the censoring mechanism is likely to be dependent censoring in practice. This paper proposes two estimators of the Gini index under independent censoring and covariate-dependent censoring, respectively. The proposed estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal. We also evaluate the performance of our estimators in finite samples through Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, the proposed methods are applied to real data.

Abstract:Based on the semiparametric median regression analysis for the right-censored data developed by Ying et al. (1995), an empirical likelihood based inferential procedure for the regression coefficients is proposed. The limiting distribution of the proposed log-empirical likelihood ratio test statistic follows a chi-squared distribution, which corresponds to the standard asymptotic results of the empirical likelihood method. The inference about the subsets of the entire regression coefficients vector is discussed. The proposed method is illustrated by some simulation studies.

Abstract:In medical studies, there are many situations where the final outcomes are truncated by death, in which patients die before outcomes of interest are measured. In this article we consider identifiability and estimation of causal effects by principal stratification when some outcomes are truncated by death. Previous studies mostly focused on large sample bounds, Bayesian analysis, sensitivity analysis. In this article, we propose a new method for identifying the causal parameter of interest under a nonparametric and semiparametric model. We show that the causal parameter of interest is identifiable under some regularity assumptions and the assumption that there exists a pretreatment covariate whose conditional distributions among two principal strata are not the same, but our approach does not need the assumption of a mixture normal distribution for outcomes as required by Zhang, Rubin, and Mealli (2009). Hence, the proposed method is applicable not only to a continuous outcome but also to a binary outcome. When some of the assumptions are violated, we discuss biases of estimators and propose methods to reduce these biases. We conduct several simulation studies to evaluate the finite-sample performance of the proposed approach. Finally, we apply the proposed approach to a real dataset from a Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) clinical trial.

Abstract:A general missing information principle is proposed for constructing M-estimators of regression parameters in the presence df left truncation and right censoring on the observed responses. By making use of martingale central limit theorems and empirical process theory, the asymptotic normality of M-estimators is established under certain assumptions. Asymptotically efficient M-estimators are also developed by using data-dependent score functions. In addition, robustness properties of the estimators are discussed and formulas for their influence functions are derived for the robustness analysis.

Abstract:A minor modification of the product-limit estimator is proposed for estimating a distribution function (not necessarily continuous) when the data are subject to either truncation or censoring, or to both, by independent but not necessarily identically distributed truncation-censoring variables. Making use of martingale integral representations and empirical process theory, uniform strong consistency of the estimator is established and weak convergence results are proved for the entire observable range of the function. Numerical results are also given to illustrate the usefulness of the modification, particularly in the context of truncated data.

Abstract:Abstract The case-cohort study design provides a cost-effective study design for a large cohort study with competing risk outcomes. The proportional subdistribution hazards model is widely used to estimate direct covariate effects on the cumulative incidence function for competing risk data. In biomedical studies, left truncation often occurs and brings extra challenges to the analysis. Existing inverse probability weighting methods for case-cohort studies with competing risk data not only have not addressed left truncation, but also are inefficient in regression parameter estimation for fully observed covariates. We propose an augmented inverse probability-weighted estimating equation for left-truncated competing risk data to address these limitations of the current literature. We further propose a more efficient estimator when extra information from the other causes is available. The proposed estimators are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. Simulation studies show that the proposed estimator is unbiased and leads to estimation efficiency gain in the regression parameter estimation. We analyze the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study data using the proposed methods.
