Abstract:Calcium oxide (CaO) which originated from calcium aluminate cement (CAC, binder) in alumina-magnesia refractory castables significantly deteriorates its high-temperature properties, particularly corrosion resistance. Hence, the development trend of castables is moving towards ultra-low cement and even cement-free castables. In the present work, the influence of different binders, including aluminate cement and alumina-silica gel bonding, on microstructural evolution, thermal-mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of Al 2 O 3 -MgO castables has been investigated. The obtained results indicated the hot strength of the Al 2 O 3 -MgO cement castables was much higher than that of Al 2 O 3 -MgO castables with gel-bonding. While the latter possessed a better residual strength (9.1 MPa) and residual strength ratio (59.71 %) after thermal-shock testing when compared to the cement bonding sample (6.73 MPa, 50.12 %). Compared to the CACs-bonded samples, slag penetration resistance displayed a notable enhancement in the gel bonding sample. A typical corrosion mechanism based on FactSage® (Version 8.1) thermodynamic simulation was proposed to elucidate the corrosion behavior.
