Abstract:In order to utilize the visible light of TiO2 effectively, the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite was synthesized by a hydrothermal approach. Characterization of the prepared products were performed with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The results indicated that the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite exhibited a significant red shift while the CdS quantum dots were attached on the surface of the TiO2 nanotubes. Based on a quartz crystal microbalance array, TiO2 nanotubes and heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite were used to fabricate a chemical prototype device to study the surface and interface properties of the heterostructured nanocomposite. The adsorption properties of the chemical prototype device to some typical organic volatiles were examined under the same micro-environment. The results showed that the attachment of CdS on the TiO2 nanotubes had enhanced the adsorption properties to those organic volatiles greatly. After the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite was casted on the surface of Au interdigital electrodes on flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrates, the photoresponse of the nanocomposite was examined with a low-power visible light source to explore the modification mechanism in detail. It was found that the CdS modification enhanced the photo-current of the TiO2 nanotubes to weak visible light. Not only showing enhanced visible light response, but also possessing excellent adsorption properties to organic volatiles, the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite, has good potential applications in photocatalysts, self-cleaning coatings, photo detectors, chemical and bio-sensors.
Polymer-Derived Carbon Nanofiber and Its Photocurrent-Switching Responses of Carbon Nanofiber/Cu Nanocomposite in Wide Ranges of Excited Light Wavelength

Abstract:Transformation into electric or photoelectric functional composite from non-conjugated polymers is a great challenge due to the presence of a large number of locative states. In this paper, carbon nanofiber was synthesized via hydrothermal carbonization utilizing carboxymethyl cellulose as a precursor, and the carbon nanofiber/Cu nanocomposite was constructed for defect passivation. The results indicated that the resulting nanocomposites exhibited good absorbance in visible light range and NIR (near-infrared). The photoconductive responses to typical weak visible light (650 nm et al.) and NIR (808, 980, and 1064 nm) were studied based on Au gap electrodes on flexible polymer substrates. The results exhibited that the nanocomposite’s solid thick film showed photocurrent-switching behaviors to visible light and NIR, the switch-ratio was depending on the wavelengths and power of incident lights. The positive and negative photoconductance responses phenomenon was observed in different compositions and changing excited wavelengths. Their photophysical mechanisms were discussed. This illustrated that the nanocomposites easily produce free electrons and holes via low power of incident light. Free electrons and holes could be utilized for different purposes in multi-disciplinary fields. It would be a potential application in broadband flexible photodetectors, artificial vision, simulating retina, and bio-imaging from visible light to NIR. This is a low-cost and green approach to obtain nanocomposite exhibiting good photocurrent response from the visible range to NIR.
Synthesis and Characterization of Bi2S3 Quantum Dot-Sensitized TiO2 Nanorod Arrays Coated with ZnSe Passivation Layers

Abstract:Stable Bi2S3 quantum dots (QDs) prepared by a modified successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method were used to decorate TiO2 nanorod (TNR) arrays and enhance their photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. In the above procedure, elemental sulfur vapor was utilized as a precursor instead of aqueous Na2S to prevent the photodecomposition of QDs, whereas the hydrolysis of the Bi precursor (Bi(NO3)(3)) was prevented by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizer, and interfacial charge recombination was inhibited by depositing ZnSe passivation layers. The prepared photoelectrodes were subjected to morphological, structural, compositional, and optical/PEC property analyses, and the ideal bandgap and high absorption coefficient of Bi2S3 QDs was shown to result in enhanced visible light absorption properties and PEC performance of QD-sensitized TNR thin films, as compared to those of bare TNR films. The deposition of ZnSe on sensitized films resulted in further PEC performance enhancement, achieving a photocurrent density of 0.11 mA/cm(2) and an electron lifetime of 37.9 ms, which was attributed to the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination by ZnSe passivation layers. Thus, the facile synthesis and environmentally friendly nature of Bi2S3 QD-sensitized TNR films coated with ZnSe passivation layers make them promising components of solar energy-driven devices.
Photovoltaic Properties of Dye Functionalized Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube/Conjugated Polymer Devices

Abstract:Photovoltaic properties of dye, N-(1-pyrenyl)maleimide (PM), functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT)-conjugated polymer, poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT), blend composites are reported. Devices were fabricated by drop or spin cast from the solution of composite onto ITO-coated glass. Improved performance was achieved by functionalizing the SWNT with dye molecules. Photovoltaic behavior with an open circuit voltage of 0.6-0.7 V was measured in diodes (Al/SWNT+PM-polymer/ITO). The short circuit current was found to increase by more than an order of magnitude compared to the SWNT-polymer diode without dye. Optical absorption spectra showed considerable ground-state interaction between SWNT+dye and the polymer. It is proposed that the main reason for the increase in short circuit current is due to efficient transfer of holes by dye molecules to P3OT at the dye/polymer interface and the rapid transfer of the generated electrons to the SWNTs at the dye/nanotube interface. It is shown that the dye functionalized SWNT-conjugated polymer composites represent an alternative class of organic semiconducting materials for dye-based organic photovoltaic cells.
One-Pot Synthesis of Semiconducting Quantum Dots-Organic Linker-Carbon Nanotubes for Potential Applications in Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

Abstract:Materials and composites with the ability to convert light into electricity are essential for a variety of applications, including solar cells. The development of materials and processes needed to boost the conversion efficiency of solar cell materials will play a key role in providing pathways for dependable light to electric energy conversion. Here, we show a simple, single-step technique to synthesize photoactive nanocomposites by coupling carbon nanotubes with semiconducting quantum dots using a molecular linker. We also discuss and demonstrate the potential application of nanocomposite for the fabrication of bulk heterojunction solar cells. Cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) were attached to multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic-3, 4, 9, 10-dianhydride (PTCDA) as a molecular linker through a one-step synthetic route. Our investigations revealed that PTCDA tremendously boosts the density of QDs on MWCNT surfaces and leads to several interesting optical and electrical properties. Furthermore, the QD-PTCDA-MWCNTs nanocomposites displayed a semiconducting behavior, in sharp contrast to the metallic behavior of the MWCNTs. These studies indicate that, PTCDA interfaced between QDs and MWCNTs, acted as a molecular bridge which may facilitate the charge transfer between QDs and MWCNTs. We believe that the investigations presented here are important to discover simple synthetic routes for obtaining photoactive nanocomposites with several potential applications in the field of opto-electronics as well as energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Abstract Here, a facile approach to enhance the performance of solar‐driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is described by means of the synergistic effects of a hybrid network of plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The device based on TiO2–Au:CNTs hybrid network sensitized with colloidal CdSe/(CdSexS1−x)5/(CdS)1 core/alloyed shell quantum dots (QDs) yields a saturated photocurrent density of 16.10 ± 0.10 mA cm−2 [at 1.0 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] under 1 sun illumination (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2), which is ≈26% higher than the control device. The in‐depth mechanism behind this significant improvement is revealed through a combined experimental and theoretical analysis for QDs/TiO2–Au:CNTs hybrid network and demonstrates the multifaceted impact of plasmonic Au NPs and CNTs: i) hot‐electron injection from Au NPs into CNTs and TiO2; ii) near‐field enhancement of the QDs absorption and carrier generation/separation processes by the plasmonic Au NPs; iii) enhanced photoinjected electron transport due to the highly directional pathways offered by CNTs. These results provide fundamental insights on the properties of QDs/TiO2–Au:CNTs hybrid network, and highlights the possibility to improve the performance of other solar technologies.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated with nanocrystals (NCs) or quantum dots (QDs) form a new class of hybrid nanomaterials that could potentially display both the unique properties of NCs and those of CNTs. The photo-induced charge transfer within the hybrid nanostructure may either increase or decrease the CNT electrical conductivity. The use of a chemical vapor deposition method realizes direct assembly of CdSe NCs onto the external surfaces of single-walled CNTs without applying any organic linkers. The NC loading on the nanotubes can be tuned simply through deposition duration. Upon visible light excitation, photo-generated electrons are injected into CNTs from the excited states of CdSe NCs, which is monitored by the measurement of the photocurrent and field effect transistor (FET) characteristics. The direction of the electron transfer could be controlled with the NC coverage on CNTs and the gate voltage.

Abstract:Electromechanical switching devices have been fabricated successfully employing vertically grown multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) from the prepatterned catalyst dots on the patterned device electrodes. The devices show various interesting switching characteristics depending on the length and the number of MWCNTs used. The device design not only simplifies the fabrication process, but also improves the integration density greatly. The device has a great potential in realizing technically viable nanoelectromechanical systems, such as switch, memory, fingers, or grippers.

Abstract:A molecular dispersed heterojunction solar cell consisting of a polymer and dye coated carbon nanotubes blend sandwiched between metal electrodes has been developed. The dye naphthalocyanine (NaPc) was used as the main sensitiser, while nanotubes and poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT) act as the electron acceptor and the electron donor, respectively. The incorporation of the NaPc in the P3OT/SWNT composite does dramatically increase the layer absorption resulting in a much higher photocurrent. We report on the exploration of new principles and concepts to develop molecular electronic devices for low cost solar cells.
A Nanocomposite of Carbon Quantum Dots and TiO2nanotube Arrays: Enhancing Photoelectrochemical and Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:A novel nanocomposite of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and TiO2 nanotubes was fabricated and its enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties were demonstrated. Carbon quantum dots were obtained by electrochemical-etching graphite electrodes and TiO2 nanotubes arrays were prepared by anodization methods. Subsequently, CQDs were assembled on the surface of vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (CQDs/TiO2 nanotubes) and the as-prepared samples were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic measurements. XPS measurement shows the presence of carbon species which come from CQDs. A red shift of light absorption edge and more absorption in the visible light region were observed for the resulting samples from the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. An enhanced photocurrent and photopotential were demonstrated for the CQDs sensitized TiO2 nanotubes under visible light irradiation and the photocurrent density was 2.7 times larger than that of pristine TiO2 nanotubes. A solar cell was fabricated for further verifying the sensitization of CQDs over TiO2 nanotubes. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of CQDs/TiO2 nanotubes towards the degradation of methylene blue was demonstrated and about 14% enhanced degradation efficiency was obtained with the presence of CQDs. This work developed a simple method to fabricate CQDs and demonstrated the introduction of CQDs to be a new approach for improving the utilization of visible light for TiO2 nanotube arrays.

Abstract:Novel CdS quantum dots (QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanotube-array photoelectrodes were investigated for their photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. The highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays were synthesized by anodic oxidation and CdS QDs were deposited into the pores of the nanotube arrays by a sequential chemical bath deposition method. It is found that the CdS QDs deposited in the pores of the TiO2 nanotube arrays may significantly increase the liquid junction PEC short circuit photocurrent (from 0.22 to 7.82 mA/cm(2)) and cell efficiency (up to 4.15%). These results clearly demonstrate that the unique nanotube structure can facilitate the propagation and kinetic separation of photogenerated charges, suggesting potentially important applications of the inorganic QDs sensitized TiO2 nanotube-array films in solar cell applications.

Abstract:We show that the performance of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based infrared photodetector can be greatly enhanced through the combination with colloidal PbS quantum dots (QDs). To improve the photo-induced charge transport efficiency and the carrier mobility, the colloidal PbS QDs are modified by short-chain inorganic. Under illumination, the light-induced electron-hole pairs can be effectively separated by the internal electric field formed at the interfaces between SWCNTS and PbS QDs, which will lead to the increase of both conductivities in them. Photocurrent is formed under the driving of source-drain voltage (Vds) applied by the interdigital finger electrodes. Our hybrid phototransistor achieves a responsivity of 7.2 A/W, a specific detectivity (defined below) of 7.1×1010 Jones, and a response time of 1.58 ms at the same time under 1550-nm illumination with low intensity. Through gate voltage tuning, the responsivity can be increased to 353.4 A/W. In addition, our hybrid phototransistor is stable, low-cost, and compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductor, which benefits a lot in real applications.

Abstract:Despite the recent progress of developing graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a metal-free photocatalyst, the synthesis of nanostructured g-C3N4 has still remained a complicated and time-consuming approach from its bulk powder, which substantially limits its photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications as well as the potential to form composites with other semiconductors. Different from the labor-intensive methods used before, such as exfoliation or assistant templates, herein, we developed a facile method to synthesize graphitic C3N4 quantum dots (g-CNQDs) directly grown on TiO2 nanowire arrays via a one-step quasi-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process in a homemade system. The as-synthesized g-CNQDs uniformly covered over the surface of TiO2 nanowires and exhibited attractive photoluminescence (PL) properties. Abstract:A new method to enhance the stability of quantum dots (QDs) in aqueous solution by encapsulating them with conducting polymer polyaniline was reported. The polyaniline-encapsulated QDs were then decorated onto graphene through π-π interactions between graphene and conjugated polymer shell of QDs, forming stable polyaniline/QD/graphene hybrid. A testing electronic device was fabricated using the hybrid in order to investigate the photoinduced charge transfer between graphene and encapsulated QDs within the hybrid. The charge transfer mechanism was explored through cyclic voltammetry and spectroscopic studies. The hybrid shows a clear response to the laser irradiation, presenting a great advantage for further applications in optoelectronic devices.
Tunable Emissive CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 Quantum Dots Engineered by Discrete Phase Transformation for Enhanced Photogating in Field‐Effect Phototransistors

Abstract:This study demonstrates a kinetically controlled discrete phase transformation process that converts non‐luminescent Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals into hybrid Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 quantum structures emitting blue (430 nm), cyan (480 nm), and green (510 nm) light. The resulting hybrid QDs can be integrated with organic semiconducting polymers to achieve high‐performance n‐type field‐effect phototransistors. Precise control of quantum structures in hybrid nanocrystals requires advancements in scientific methodologies. Here, on the design of tunable CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 quantum dots are reported by developing a unique discrete phase transformation approach in Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals. Unlike conventional hybrid systems that emit solely in the green region, this current strategy produces adjustable luminescence in the blue (450 nm), cyan (480 nm), and green (510 nm) regions with high photoluminescence quantum yields up to 45%, 60%, and 85%, respectively. Concentration‐dependent studies reveal that phase transformation mechanisms and the factors that drive CsBr removal occur at lower dilutions while the dissolution–recrystallization process dominates at higher dilutions. When the polymer‐CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 integrated into a field‐effected transistor the resulting phototransistors featured enhanced photosensitivity exceeding 105, being the highest reported for an n‐type phototransistor, while maintaining good transistor performances as compared to devices consisting of polymer‐CsPbBr3 NCs.

High-quality CdS quantum dots sensitized ZnO nanotube array films for superior photoelectrochemical performance

Abstract:Abstract Herein, the surface characteristics of ZnO were synthetically optimized by a self-designed simultaneous etching and W-doping hydrothermal method utilizing the as-prepared ZnO nanorod (NR) array films as template. Benefiting from the etching and regrowth process and the different structure stability of the different faces of ZnO NRs, the uniquely etched and W-doped ZnO (EWZ) nanotube (NT) array films with larger surface area, more active sites and better energy band structure were conducted to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance and the loading quality of CdS quantum dots (QDs). On the basis of better surface characteristics, the CdS QDs were uniformly loaded on EWZ NT array film with good coverage ratio and interface connection, which can effectively improve the light-harvesting ability, charge transportation and separation as well as charge injection efficiency during the PEC reaction. Therefore, all the CdS QDs sensitized EWZ NT array films exhibit significantly enhanced PEC performance. The CdS/EWZ-7 composite films exhibited the optimal photocurrent density with a value of 12 mA/cm 2 , which is 2.5 times higher than that of conventional CdS/ZnO-7 composite films under the same sensitization times of CdS QDs. Additionally, the corresponding etching and optimizing mechanisms were also discussed in present work.

Cdte Quantum Dots-Sensitized Tio2 Nanotube Array Photoelectrodes

Abstract:TiO2 nanotube array films, formed by anodic oxidation, have been shown to yield high efficiency of charge generation and collection in photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. However, the wide band gap (3.2 eV) of TiO2 limits the efficiency of these devices in the visible region. In this work, four types of presynthesized CdTe quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes were deposited into the TiO2 nanotubes to serve as the sensitizers, and the performance of the CdTe QD-sensitized TiO2 nanotube arrays was measured in a PEC solar cell. It is found that, with decreasing particle size, the driving force for electron injection increases while the visible light response decreases. Maximum photocurrent was obtained for the QDs that have an absorption peak at 536 nm. Under AM 1.5 G illuminations, a 6 mA/cm(2) Short circuit current density is achieved, which presents a 35 times improvement compared to that based on using a plain TiO2 nanotube film.
Preparation and Photoelectrochemical Properties of CdS Quantum Dot‐sensitized ZnO Nanotube Arrays

Abstract:CdS/ZnO nanotubes (NTs) arrays were synthesized on a transparent conductive glass (FTO) substrate by hydrothermal method, chemical bath etching and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, which were used in semiconductor-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (PECs). The crystal structure, morphology and photoelectrochemical conversion properties of different photoanodes were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), and electrochemical workstation. The results show a heterojunction has been formed between ZnO and CdS QDs. The ZnO NTs and CdS QDs played a remarkable controllability for PEC performances. The photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency of ZnO NTs photoanodes was 3 times that of ZnO nanorods (NRs) arrays photoanodes. After sensitization of CdS quantum dots, the photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency of CdS/ZnO NRs was improved by 7 times and the CdS/ZnO NTs was increased by 4 times. These results demonstrate that the CdS/ZnO core-shell structure can provide a facile and compatible frame for the potential applications in nanotube-based solar cells.
Photoinduced Charge Transfer in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Quantum Dots

Abstract:In this paper, we have explored the charge transfer mechanism in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) quantum dots (QDs) of molybdenum disulfide ($\rm{MoS_2}$) and tungsten disulfide ($\rm{WS_2}$). Rhodamine 6G (R6G), a dye from the rhodamine family, has been employed as the fluorescent molecule, with MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ QDs acting as electron acceptors in the photo-induced charge transfer process. The TMDC QDs were synthesized using a top-down approach and characterized through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and fluorimetry. TEM images revealed well-dispersed particles measuring 2 nm in size. These QDs exhibit strong fluorescence emission when excited with light at wavelengths below 350 nm. Under light exposure, photons generate charges in the fluorescent dye molecules, and the TMDC QDs facilitate the charge transfer process. The charge transfer phenomenon was investigated using time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC), a time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopic technique. The time-resolved fluorescence study indicated a change in the fluorescence (FL) lifetime of R6G molecules in the presence of QDs. The FL lifetime of R6G molecules without QDs was found to be 4.0 ns, which decreased to 1.9 ns and 3.8 ns in the presence of MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ QDs, respectively. This reduction in FL lifetime suggests that the MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ QDs provide an additional pathway for photo-generated electrons in the excited state of R6G molecules. This research can be extended to optoelectronic devices, where charge transfer is crucial for device efficiency and performance.

Abstract:The photoresponse of TiO2 nanotube-array films in the visible region is shown to have been significantly improved by sensitizing them with CdS and CdSe semiconductor quantum dots using a sequential chemical bath deposition method. These quantum dots served as cosensitizers, and the performance of corresponding photoelectrode was measured in a photoelectrochemical solar cell. A 13.0 mA/cm(2) short circuit current density is achieved with the TiO2/CdS/CdSe photoelectrode under AM 1.5G illuminations, which is higher than the direct sum of CdS and CdSe sensitized TiO2.
