Abstract:A multiple-needle-cathode plasma surface alloying process has been developed for improving the properties of surface hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V. The process is carried out at temperatures below 800 degrees C and facilitates the simultaneous introduction of W, Mo,nitrogen and carbon into the surfaces of Ti6Al4V forming gradient alloying layer structure with an extremely high hardness. The process is performed at working pressure of 30Pa-80Pa with 9-needle-cathode of W80Mo20 alloy rods array and a high pure graphite plate cathode as target electrode. A maximum microhardness is 4-6 times much harder than the substrate. The results show the presence of carbide and nitride ceramics phases contribute to high microhardness and wear resistance. The multiple-needle-cathode discharge plasma treatment is an effective method for improvement of the mechanical and tribological properties of titanium-base alloys by formation of graded diffusion hard surface layers. The present paper describes this novel process and properties characteristics.
Electrochemical deposition multi-walled carbon nanotube coatings on the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy for enhancing its biotribological properties

Abstract:Ti6Al4V alloys have potential applications as bone implants. However, their poor biotribological performances affected the service life. In this work, carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CMWNT) coatings were grafted on the surface of Ti6Al4V alloys by electrochemical deposition for enhancing the biotribological properties. The CMWNT coatings showed lower coefficient of friction and wear rates, with the reduction of wear rates of 6% in dry condition and 90% under simulated body fluid (SBF) lubrication. This result might be ascribed to the transfer of friction behavior from sliding friction to rolling friction. In addition, the tribological regularity of CMWNT coating with the frequency and load were discussed. Under dry friction, with the increase of frequency and the decrease of normal load, the COF of the CMWNT coating decreased. In SBF lubrication, the COF decreased and the wear rate increased with the increase of frequency. Moreover, the excellent anti-wear properties were observed at the below of 10 N. These findings indicate that the CMWNT coating has an excellent protective effect on titanium alloy, and has a certain application potential in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Hydrogen-free a-C/a-C:Ti nanomultilayer films are deposited on medical Ti6Al4V alloy using a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering under graded bias voltage. The mechanical and tribological properties of the nanomultilayer films are performed on the nanoindentor, Rockwell and scratch tests, and ball-on-disk tribometer. The biological properties are evaluated by cell cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, subchronic systemic toxicity and implant. The hard a-C/a-C:Ti nanomultilayer films on medical alloy exhibit high adhesion strength and excellent tribological properties in both ambient air and Hank's solution. Biocompatibility results reveal the film no cytotoxity, no genotoxicity, no subchronic systemic toxicity and no contraindications in implant systems. Because of excellent mechanical properties and biosafety, the carbon-based films on medical alloy unveils a prospective application in medical implants.
Corrosion Behavior of Nitrided Layer of Ti6Al4V Titanium Alloy by Hollow Cathodic Plasma Source Nitriding

Abstract:Ti6Al4V titanium alloys, with high specific strength and good biological compatibility with the human body, are ideal materials for medical surgical implants. However, Ti6Al4V titanium alloys are prone to corrosion in the human environment, which affects the service life of implants and harms human health. In this work, hollow cathode plasm source nitriding (HCPSN) was used to generate nitrided layers on the surfaces of Ti6Al4V titanium alloys to improve their corrosion resistance. Ti6Al4V titanium alloys were nitrided in NH3 at 510 °C for 0, 1, 2, and 4 h. The microstructure and phase composition of the Ti-N nitriding layer was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This modified layer was identified to be composed of TiN, Ti2N, and α-Ti (N) phase. To study the corrosion properties of different phases, the nitriding 4 h samples were mechanically ground and polished to obtain the various surfaces of Ti2N and α-Ti (N) phases. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements were conducted in Hank's solution to characterize the corrosion resistance of Ti-N nitriding layers in the human environment. The relationship between corrosion resistance and the microstructure of the Ti-N nitriding layer was discussed. The new Ti-N nitriding layer that can improve corrosion resistance provides a broader prospect for applying Ti6Al4V titanium alloy in the medical field.

Abstract:Orthopedic metal implant materials such as titanium alloy may face the problem of friction wear during long-term implantation. TiCu alloy has been proved to have excellent mechanical properties, biofunctionability and biocompatibility. In order to further improve its wear resistance, a multilayer coating composed of high hardness TiCuN and ZrN were deposited on the surface of TiCu by axial magnetic field enhanced pulsed bias arc ion plating (AMFE-AIP) system. Then, the corresponding relationship among the modulation period (Λ), the microstructure of the TiCuN/ZrN multi-layers and the influence properties were analyzed. The results showed that in the multi-layers, there existed a “Cu nail/bridge” structure which was biased perpendicular to the direction of the film. With the decrease of the Λ, the maximum stress on the coating surface during the sliding process was decreased, the adhesion, wear resistance of the film and the release of Cu ions from the film were gradually increased, which resulted in the improvement of anti-bacteria and cell proliferation promotion properties. This study indicated that the TiCuN/ZrN multilayer coating is promised to be a new kind of biofunctionalized coating with properties that can be regulated on demand for adapting various implant environment of titanium alloy implants.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomultilayer coatings were deposited on medical-grade Ti6Al4V alloy using a magnetron sputtering technique under a graded bias voltage. The mechanical properties of the nanomultilayer coatings were investigated by nanoindentation, Rockwell and scratch tests as well as a ball-on-disk tribometer. The biological properties related to the immunological response of the coatings were investigated by wear simulation and wear particles analysis. Wear simulation was done according to ISO 14242, wear particles were analysed according to ISO 17853, and then compared with CoCr femoral heads. The results revealed that the carbon-based nanomultilayer coatings showed a multilayer structure, with a hardness of ∼20 GPa, an elastic modulus of ∼175 GPa, an adhesion higher than 80 N, and a low average coefficient of friction of 0.1. The average gravimetric wear rate of the polyethylene cups between the coated and CoCr groups had no statistical difference (P = 0.098). The average equivalent circle diameter of particles produced in the coated group was larger than that in CoCr (P = 0.001), but the proportion of submicron particles and globular/circular particles was not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). Results showed lower Co/Cr ion contamination in the coated group. Hence, the carbon-based nanomultilayer coating on Ti6Al4V has good mechanical and tribological properties, releases fewer harmful metal ions and would not cause a more intense immunological host response than a CoCr prosthesis. The newly designed a-C nanomultilayer coatings are expected to prolong the longevity of artificial hip joints.

Abstract:Abstract Titanium nitride (TiN) and titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) coatings are very hard materials that are mostly coated on cutting tools to increase the tool life. These coatings have also been successfully applied as a coating material for biomedical applications mainly due to their tribological properties, biocompatibility, and affordable price. In an attempt to develop transition metal nitride coatings on specimens of cylindrical geometry, TiN and TiAlN thin films were deposited successfully on stainless steel tubes using a direct-current cylindrical magnetron cosputtering method. Both types of coatings were uniform in nature and had good adherence to the substrate. TiN and TiAlN thin films were characterized systematically to determine their structure, surface morphology, chemical states, chemical structure, and electrochemical behavior using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic methods, respectively. The XRD patterns of the TiN and TiAlN coatings indicated (111) preferential orientation. Cross-sectional SEM images revealed a columnar growth of the coatings with an arrow-headed geometry. XPS characterization showed the presence of TiN, Titanium dioxide, titanium oxynitride, aluminum oxide, and aluminum nitride phases. Potentiodynamic polarization tests in 3.5 % sodium chloride solution revealed that the TiAlN coating exhibited superior corrosion resistance compared with the TiN coating. Furthermore, TiAlN coating showed 94 % of average absorption in ultraviolet-visible region using photospectrometry. The cylindrical magnetron sputter deposition technique enables development of uniform protective coatings on tubular geometries, which are frequently employed in solar thermal and nuclear applications.
Effects of Nitrogen Ion Implantation and Implantation Energy on Surface Properties and Adhesion Strength of TiN Films Deposited on Aluminum by Magnetron Sputtering

Abstract:The performance of tribological coatings depends greatly on the adhesion strength between the coatings and substrates. In this work, we investigated the influence of the ion implantation energy of nitrogen on the adhesion and surface properties of TiN deposited on aluminum substrate. Aluminum samples were implanted with 15keV, 30keV and 40keV nitrogen ions before TiN films were deposited using magnetron sputtering in a custom-designed multi-functional ion implanter. The adhesion properties of the implanted TiN films were assessed using nano-scratch tests and were observed to vary with the nitrogen ion implantation energy. Our frictional test results show that an appropriate ion implantation energy and dose can improve the frictional behavior of TiN films deposited on aluminum.
Microstructure and Tribological Behavior of TiAlSiN Coatings Deposited by Deep Oscillation Magnetron Sputtering

Abstract:Development of pulsed-techniques aimed to generate highly ionized target species and high plasma density opens up a new way to tailor composition, structure, and properties of coatings. In this work, TiAlSiN coatings have been deposited at various negative substrate biases (V-s) using deep oscillation magnetron sputtering by sputtering a TiAlSi compound target in Ar/N-2 mixtures. The increase in V-s from -30 to -120V resulted in a decrease in (111)-preferred orientation and grain size, together with the increase in residual stress and rough morphology. The nc-TiAlN/a-Si3N4 nanocomposite structure was obtained in coatings. The highest hardness and Young's modulus reached 42.4 and 495GPa at -120V, respectively. However, at -60V, the coatings with the highest H/E* and H-3/E*(2) ratios of 0.095 and 0.332 exhibited excellent adhesion with above HF1 level, the lowest coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.35 and specific wear rate of 2.1x 10(-7)mm(3)N(-1)m(-1). Wear mechanism changed from the mixture of severe adhesive, oxidative and abrasive wear to mild oxidative wear to severe oxidative wear. TiAlSiN coatings with high hardness and H/E* and H-3/E*(2) ratios exhibited the decrease in COF and wear rate due to refined grains in uniform distribution, which well promoted oxide layers formed on sliding contact surface.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, Ahead of Print. This study investigates the application of DC magnetron sputtering (MS) technology for producing TiN and ion-substituted Ca-P coatings on dental implant materials, demonstrating ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 887 MPa, a modulus of elasticity of 11.3 × 106 MPa. The influence of various physical vapor deposition (PVD-MS) parameters—such as substrate temperature, post-heat treatment, deposition duration, discharge power, and bias voltage—on the characteristics of these coatings is examined. The research evaluates the advantages and limitations of PVD-MS in fabricating TiN and Ca-P coatings, with an emphasis on their impact on surface topography and chemical composition, which are critical factors influencing cellular behavior. The study reveals that while ion-substituted HA coatings can enhance cell adhesion, they may also exhibit cytotoxic effects, potentially limiting cell growth. It compares osteogenic cell proliferation rates between low-crystalline HA coatings and highly crystalline variants on Ti-based substrates, highlighting significant performance disparities. Additionally, PVD-MS demonstrates robust adhesion capabilities and facilitates the incorporation of therapeutic ions, effectively replicating bioapatite properties. The addition of coating on the substrate promotes additional strengthening mechanisms of the layers, leading to improved wear resistance compared to an alloyed substrate. Estimated values for hardness range between 7.2 and 8.4 GPa, and for Young's modulus, they range from 126 to 162 GPa. The study highlights the potential of PVD-MS in creating nanostructured Ca-P coatings on biodegradable metals, alloys, and polymeric biomaterials. This technology improves corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, chemical stability, wear resistance, and overall performance in various biomedical applications.

Abstract:In this work, TiN-incorporated graphite-like amorphous carbon (alpha-GLC) bioceramic films were successfully fabricated on Ti alloy (Ti6Al4V) using the magnetron sputtering technique. The biocompatibility and bio-tribological properties of the TiN/alpha-GLC-coated Ti alloy were evaluated. Based on the clinical application, the microstructure, biocompatibility, histomorphological observation, and mechanical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation test, and in vitro and in vivo tests including MTT, cell adhesion test, and slice observation of hard tissues. These techniques confirmed that there was strong bonding between the Ti alloy and the TiN/alpha-GLC film. In addition, face-centered cubic TiN and hexagonal close-packed Ti were clearly detected in the TiN/alpha-GLC films. A partial nanocomposite structure, comprised of homogeneous nanoclusters and crystalline particles, was detected in the amorphous matrix. Cell adhesion and MTT test results indicated that the TiN/alpha-GLC film could promote cell attachment and proliferation. Phase composition and the film morphology were determined to be the crucial factors that contributed to the improved biocompatibility. The biotribological property test showed that the TiN/alpha-GLC film with a Ti content of 7.8 at% had the lowest coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.076 and the lowest wear rate of 1.76 x 10(-6) mm(3) (N m)(-1). The low COF was attributed to the superior mechanical properties of the TiN/alpha-GLC composite film. The TiN/alpha-GLC-coated Ti alloy implants were placed subcutaneously into rabbits for different time periods, and the tissue response decreased significantly as compared to that of the pure alpha-GLC film. The excellent biocompatibility and function reliability of the TiN/alpha-GLC bioceramic films showed that they are potential candidates for bone tissue implants.
Phase Composition, Hardness, and Thermal Shock Properties of AlCrTiN Hard Films with High Aluminum Content

Abstract:TiCrAlN hard films based on TiN or CrN show superior properties in terms of hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability due to the addition of alloying elements. AlCrTiN films based on AlN may have higher thermal shock properties, but the knowledge of AlCrTiN films with high Al content has been insufficient until now. In this study, two sets of AlCrTiN hard films with different Al contents of 48 at.% and 58 at.% among metal components were prepared via multi-arc ion plating so as to investigate the effect of Al content on the phase composition, hardness, and thermal shock resistance of the films. The same microstructures, morphologies, and thicknesses of the fabricated film samples were achieved by changing the combination of cathode alloy targets and adjusting the arc source current during deposition. The surface chemical composition, cross-sectional elemental distribution, microstructure, morphology, phase composition, surface hardness, film/substrate adhesion strength, and thermal shock performance of the AlCrTiN films were examined. The obtained results reveal that the two sets of AlTiCrN hard films are face-centered cubic solid solutions with a columnar fine grain structure and a preferred growth orientation of (200) crystal plane. The hardness of the AlCrTiN films can be improved up to HV2850 by properly reducing the Al content from 58 at.% to 48 at.%. Meanwhile, the film/substrate adhesion performance is strong enough in terms of critical loads greater than 200 N. Furthermore, the AlCrTiN films maintain high thermal shock resistance at 600 °C when the Al content decreases from 58 at.% to 48 at.%. The optimal composition of the AlCrTiN hard films is 25:13:15:47 (at.%), based on the consideration of hardness, adhesion, and thermal shock cycling resistance. This optimal AlCrTiN hard film can be suggested as an option for protective coatings of hot process die tools.

Nanomechanical and Microstructural Characterization of Biocompatible Ti 3 Au Thin Films Grown on Glass and Ti6Al4V Substrates

Abstract:Ti-Au intermetallic-based material systems are being extensively studied as next-generation thin film coatings to extend the lifetime of implant devices. These coatings are being developed for application to the articulating surfaces of total joint implants and, therefore, must have excellent biocompatibility combined with superior mechanical hardness and wear resistance. However, these key characteristics of Ti-Au coatings are heavily dependent upon factors such as the surface properties and temperature of the underlying substrate during thin film deposition. In this work, Ti3Au thin films were deposited by magnetron sputtering on both glass and Ti6Al4V substrates at an ambient and elevated substrate temperature of 275 °C. These films were studied for their mechanical properties by the nanoindentation technique in both variable load and fixed load mode using a Berkovich tip. XRD patterns and cross-sectional SEM images detail the microstructure, while AFM images present the surface morphologies of these Ti3Au thin films. The biocompatibility potential of the films is assessed by cytotoxicity tests in L929 mouse fibroblast cells using Alamar blue assay, while leached ion concentrations in the film extracts are quantified using ICPOEMS. The standard deviation for hardness of films deposited on glass substrates is ∼4 times lower than that on Ti6Al4V substrates and is correlated with a corresponding increase in surface roughness from 2 nm for glass to 40 nm for Ti6Al4V substrates. Elevating substrate temperature leads to an increase in film hardness from 5.1 to 8.9 GPa and is related to the development of a superhard β phase of the Ti3Au intermetallic. The standard deviation of this peak mechanical hardness value is reduced by ∼3 times when measured in fixed load mode compared to the variable load mode due to the effect of nanoindentation tip penetration depth. All tested Ti-Au thin films also exhibit excellent biocompatibility against L929 fibroblast cells, as viability levels are above 95% and leached Ti, Al, V, and Au ion concentrations are below 0.1 ppm. Overall, this work demonstrates a novel Ti3Au thin film system with a unique combination of high hardness and excellent biocompatibility with potential to be developed into a new wear-resistant coating to extend the lifetime of articulating total joint implants.
Biocompatibility and Microstructure-Based Stress Analyses of TiNbZrTa Composite Films

Abstract:Background: the clinical application of orthopedic or dental implants improves the quality of the lives of patients. However, the long-term use of implants may lead to implant loosening and related complications. The purpose of this study is to deposit titanium (Ti)-niobium (Nb)-zirconium (Zr)-tantalum (Ta) alloys on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V to increase structural strength and biocompatibility for the possible future application of implants. Materials and methods: Ti, Nb, Zr, and Ta served as the materials for the surface modification of the titanium alloy. TiNbZr and TiNbZrTa coatings were produced using cathodic arc evaporation, and a small amount of nitrogen was added to produce TiNbZrTa(N) film. Annealing and oxidation were then conducted to produce TiNbZrTa-O and TiNbZrTa(N)-O coatings. In this study, biological tests and finite element analyses of those five alloy films, as well as uncoated Ti-6Al-4V, were performed. Human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63) and mouse fibroblast cells (L-929) were used to analyze cytotoxicity, cell viability, and cell morphology, and the bone differentiation of MG-63 was evaluated in an alkaline phosphatase experiment. Furthermore, for measuring the gene expression level of L-929, reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was conducted. The three-dimensional (3D) computational models of the coated and uncoated sample films were constructed using images of transmission electron microscopy and computer-aided design software and, then, the stress distributions of all models were evaluated by finite element analysis. Result: the cytotoxicity test revealed that the surface treatment had no significant cytotoxic effects on MG-63 and L-929 cells. According to the results of the cell viability of L-929, more cell activity was observed in the surface-treated experimental group than in the control group; for MG-63, the cell viability of the coated samples was similar to that of the uncoated samples. In the cell morphology analysis, both MG-63 and L-929 exhibited attached filopodia and lamellipodia, verifying that the cells were well attached. The alkaline phosphatase experiment demonstrated that the surface treatment did not affect the characteristics of early osteogenic differentiation, whereas RT-qPCR analysis showed that surface treatment can promote better performance of L-929 cells in collagen, type I, α1, and fibronectin 1. Finally, the results of the finite element analysis revealed that the coated TiNb interlayer can effectively reduce the stress concentration inside the layered coatings. Conclusions: TiNbZrTa series films deposited using cathodic arc evaporation had excellent biocompatibility with titanium alloys, particularly in regard to soft tissue cells, which exhibited an active performance. The finite element analysis verified that the TiNb interlayer can reduce the stress concentration inside TiNbZrTa series films, increasing their suitability for application in biomedical implants in the future.
Experimental and Numerical Evaluations of Adhesion Strength and Stress in Tin Films Deposited on Ti-Implanted Aluminum

Abstract:Titanium ions were implanted into aluminum substrates at 40kV prior to magnetron sputtering deposition of the Ti interlayer and TiN film using our custom-designed multifunctional ion implanter without breaking vacuum. An 82-nm-thick modified layer was formed between the TiN film and the substrate. The characteristics of the implanted samples were compared to those of TiN∕Al and TiN∕Ti∕Al samples that were not preimplanted. Based on our scratch tests, the critical loading Lc of the TiN∕Ti∕Ti-implanted Al sample was significantly improved compared to the unimplanted TiN∕Al and TiN∕Ti∕Al samples. Finite element analysis was conducted to simulate the scratch process to help reveal the stress distributions in the vicinity of the interlayer. The results show that the stress around the interface is largely reduced in the TiN∕Ti∕Ti-implanted Al sample. Consequently, the mechanical properties such as resistance to loadings are enhanced.
The Tribological Performance of Surface Treated Ti6A14V as Sliding Against Si3N4 Ball and 316L Stainless Steel Cylinder

Abstract:Closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering was used to deposit diamond-like carbon (Ti-C:H) coatings on Ti6Al4V alloy and gas nitrided Ti6Al4V alloy. Four different specimens were prepared, namely untreated Ti6Al4V alloy (Ti6Al4V), gas nitrided Ti6Al4V alloy (N-Ti6Al4V), Ti-C:H-coated Ti6Al4V alloy (Ti-C:H/Ti6Al4V) and Ti-C:H-coated gas nitrided Ti6Al4V alloy (Ti-C:H/N-Ti6Al4V). The tribological properties of the four specimens were evaluated using a reciprocating wear tester sliding against a Si3N4 ball (point contact mode) and 316L stainless steel cylinder (line contact mode). The wear tests were performed in a 0.89 wt.% NaCl solution. The results showed that the nitriding treatment increased the surface roughness and hardness of the Ti6Al4V alloy and improved the wear resistance as a result. In addition, the Ti-C:H coating also improved the tribological performance of Ti6Al4V. For example, compared to the untreated Ti6Al4V sample, the Ti-C:H coating reduced the wear depth and friction coefficient by 340 times and 10 times, respectively, in the point contact wear mode, and 151 times and 9 times, respectively, in the line contact wear mode. It is thus inferred that diamond-like carbon coatings are of significant benefit in extending the service life of artificial biomedical implants.

Abstract:<p>TiAlN coatings are widely used in high-speed cutting, machining, and other high-temperature applications. However, owing to the high cathode temperature, large amounts of metal droplets are produced during fabrication in arc ion plating (AIP) and the shadowing effect introduces particles and voids in the coatings. Continuous high-power magnetron sputtering (C-HPMS) can produce high ionization rates similar to high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) and high deposition rates similar to AIP. In this work, the morphology, adhesion strength, tribological properties, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance of Al-rich TiAlN coatings prepared by C-HPMS are studied systematically. Higher Al and Ti ionization rates and deposition rates are achieved by increasing the power density. The largest deposition rate is 0.45 μm/min and coating hardness is 34.4 GPa. More importantly, no particles are produced as manifested by small surface roughness of 17.8 nm.</p>

Abstract:In this study, Titanium Nitride (TiN), Chromium Nitride (CrN), and Titanium Diboride(TiB2) coatings were deposited on a Ti6Al4V alloy substrate, by using the RF magnetron sputter deposition technique. An examination was carried out to meticulously compare the phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical and tribological properties of the three coating types. XRD, Optical 3D-profilometer, FESEM, EDAX, WDXRF, Raman spectroscopy, nanoindentation, and scratch test techniques were employed for the comprehensive characterization of coating properties, including phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical behavior. A universal tribometer was used to measure the friction and wear coefficients under different sliding distances. The nanoindentation test outcomes revealed that the CrN coating exhibited elastic modulus (E) and hardness (H) values of approximately 172.62 ± 8.6 GPa and 12.57 ± 0.7 GPa, respectively. These values were higher compared to those of the TiN and TiB2 coatings. According to the adhesive strength analysis in the scratch test, the critical load value for CrN was 592.1 mN, significantly outperforming the critical loads for both TiN and TiB2 coatings. Among the three coatings, the CrN coating demonstrated superior tribological performance, displaying the lowest friction coefficients and wear coefficients across various sliding distances against a SiC ball. Additionally, an analysis of the wear mechanisms for all three types of coatings was conducted. The analysis indicates that the use of CrN coating on a Ti6Al4V alloy would result in improved service life and better endurance in machine components, cutting tools, and aerospace applications.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">Tribological, mechanical, and chemical properties of the TiN coatings on Ti substrate were experimentally investigated for implant applications. X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that the principal crystal structure of TiN coating was (111) preferred orientation with FCC structure. Experimental evaluation was conducted at two substrate surface roughness, i.e., 0.1 μm and 0.4 μm. TiN coatings having 0.4-μm substrate surface roughness and approximately 3.3-μm coating thickness demonstrated optimum results of adhesion strength, hardness, coefficient of friction, wear rate, and corrosion rate in simulation body fluid (SBF). The selected TiN-coated sample exhibited maximum of 16.585 GPa hardness, 238.7 GPa elastic modulus, approximately 20 N adhesion, and 0.088 coefficient of friction. TiN coating showed approximately 8 times more corrosion resistance and 4 times more wear resistance than the bare titanium substrate. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the wear tracks of TiN coating in SBF showed no presence of any harmful ingredients and confirmed its biocompatibility over the usage time in SBF. TiN-coated sample with higher substrate surface roughness (0.4 μm) demonstrated better tribo-mechanical properties and could reduce the cost of production than the conventionally used TiN-coated Ti implants of lower substrate surface roughness (0.1 μm).</p>
