Abstract:A study on the scattering of torsional flexural guided waves from circular holes and crack-like defects in hollow cylinders is carried out through finite element simulation and laboratory experiment. Two types of defects: circular holes and crack-like defects with varying orientation angles are studied. Results show that the reflection coefficients for flexural modes with different helix angles of propagation detecting a crack-like defect vary greatly, while for a circular hole the reflection coefficients for different flexural modes are similar. It is observed that there exists a specific flexural mode that shows the maximum reflection coefficient for a crack-like defect. The scattering properties can be utilized to classify defects as circular hole and crack-like, the range of the orientation angle of a crack-like defect can also be predicted. The detection sensitivity for oblique crack-like defects is significantly improved by using flexural modes that propagate at a helix angle with respect to the pipe axis. A flexural mode sweeping technique is proposed for classifying and characterizing defects in hollow cylinders. The proposed classification and characterization method is validated by laboratory experiments. Pipeline inspection using flexural guided waves can be supplemental to current inspection using only axisymmetric waves in order to improve the probability of an accurate and reliable inspection process.

Abstract:˖Ultrasonic guided wave technology shows a good prospect in the long distance and large-scale structure of the non-destructive testing and health monitoring, thanks to its advantages such as single-ended excitation, long propagation distance, 100% detection of cross section.Constrained by theory and instrumentation technology, ultrasonic guided wave is basically only used for defect screening, ultrasonic guided wave quantitative detection technology has not been widely studied and applied.Aiming at the quantitative analysis of defect size problem in guided wave inspection, it proposes a method based on matching pursuit for quantifying the severity of pipeline defect along axial direction.By analyzing the characteristics of the echo signal, the optimized dictionary is constructed to efficiently decompose the edge reflection components from defect reflection signal.The axial extent of defect can be then quantitatively evaluated by using obtained information.Algorithm validation experiments of finite element numerical simulation as well as detecting the artificial defects in the aluminum pipe by using MSGW magnetostrictive guided wave detector show that the algorithm of error is less than 5%.

Abstract:Scattering of an elastic wave by a cylindrical shell embedded in poroelastic medium is investigated theoretically with the assumption that the shell material is also a porous elastic medium. The porous medium is modellized via Biot's theory and the scattering by cylindrical shell is expressed by the definition of scattering matrix. The normal mode expansion technique is employed for analysing the scattering field, and the asymptotic solutions of displacements, stresses and pore pressure are derived. Two limiting cases-scattering by a poroelastic cylinder in Biot medium and a elastic cylindrical shell in elastic medium are obtained from the general solutions. The dispersion curves of displacement amplitude at the interface of shell and medium is compared with the case of elastic shell. The scattering amplitude associated with the fast, slow and transverse waves are identified by numerical simulation. On the scattering of torsional waves from axisymmetric defects in buried pipelines

Abstract:This article develops a numerical model suitable for analysing elastic wave scattering in buried pipelines. The model is based on a previous so-called hybrid approach, where a nominally infinite length of pipe is split up into uniform and non-uniform regions. The key challenge for buried structures is in enforcing the appropriate boundary conditions in both the axial and radial directions, which must encompass the entire length of the structure, as well as the surrounding material. Accordingly, the focus of this article is on developing a model suitable for accurately applying these boundary conditions, and so the analysis is restricted here to the study of axisymmetric defects and to an incident sound field that consists of the fundamental torsional mode only. It is shown that this problem may be addressed in a numerically efficient way provided one carefully choses a perfectly matched layer for the surrounding material, and then integrates over this layer using a complex co-ordinate stretching function. This enables the use of mode matching to deliver a convergent system of equations that enforce the appropriate axial and radial boundary conditions.

Abstract:After long-term service in deep ocean, pipelines are usually suffered from corrosions, which may greatly influence the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) behavior of pipes. Thus, we investigate the VIV of defective pipelines. The geometric nonlinearity due to large deformation of pipes and nonlinearity in vortex-induced force are simulated. This nonlinear vibration system is simulated with finite element method and solved by direct integration method with incremental algorithm. Two kinds of defects, corrosion pits and volumetric flaws, and their effects of depth and range on VIV responses are investigated. A new finite element is developed to simulate corrosion pits. Defects are found to aggravate VIV displacement response only if environmental flow rate is less than resonance flow rate. As the defect depth grows, the stress responses increase, however, the increase of the defect range reduces the stress response at corroded part. The volumetric flaws affect VIV response stronger than the corrosion pits.

Abstract:According to Helmholtz theorem of vector resolution,the potential function expressions of wave numbers of P1 wave(fast compressional wave),P2 Wave(slow compressional wave)and S wave(shear wave)of nearly saturated soil were obtained based on the wave motion equation put forward by Vardoulakis and Beskos.The nearly saturated soil and the lining were considered as isotropic and homogenous,the potential functions of incident,scattering and refracting waves were expanded to the series form of Fourier-Bessel functions,the stresses and displacements at the boundary of the nearly saturated soil and lining were considered as continuous and the inner bounder of the lining was considered as free,and the theoretical solutions of scattering and refracting coefficients were obtained of the problem of incident plane P1 wave scattered by a deeply buried circular lining.And finally the effect of the saturation on DSCF(concentration factors of dynamic stress)of the nearly saturated soil and lining PPCF(concentration factor of pore pressure)of the nearly saturated soil were studied by the numerical computation,which indicates that when the saturation increases,DSCF of the nearly saturated soil decreases,DSCF of the lining changes little,and PPCF of the nearly saturated soil increases.
Guided wave propagation in an elastic hollow cylinder coated with a viscoelastic material

Abstract:The propagation of ultrasonic guided waves in an elastic hollow cylinder with a viscoelastic coating is studied. The principle motivation is to provide tools for performing a guided wave, nondestructive inspection of piping and tubing with viscoelastic coatings. The theoretical boundary value problem is solved that describes the guided wave propagation in these structures for the purpose of finding the guided wave modes that propagate with little or no attenuation. The model uses the global matrix technique to generate the dispersion equation for the longitudinal modes of a system of an arbitrary number of perfectly bonded hollow cylinders with traction-free outer surfaces. A numerical solution of the dispersion equation produces the phase velocity and attenuation dispersion curves that describe the nature of the guided wave propagation. The attenuation dispersion curves show some guided wave modes that propagate with little or no attenuation in the coated structures of interest. The wave structure is examined for two of the modes to verify that the boundary conditions are satisfied and to explain their attenuation behavior. Experimental results are produced using an array of transducers positioned circumferentially around the pipe to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical solution.

Abstract:Millions of miles of pipes are being used in both civil and industrial fields. Spiral-welded pipes, which are widely applied in fields such as drainage, architecture as well as oil and gas storage and transportation, are difficult to inspect due to their complex geometry. Guided waves have shown a great potential in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for such cases. Flexural guided waves that propagate at a helix angle relative to the axial direction of pipe, are the most appropriate modes for inspecting spiral-welded pipes. The classical Normal Mode Expansion method (NME) is adopted to disseminate the forced response and perturbation analysis of a steel pipe with respect to a time delay circular loading. A time delay circular array transducer (TDCAT) is proposed for the purpose of exciting pure flexural mode in pipes. Pure flexural mode can be excited when the time delay parameter is specifically designed. The theoretical prediction is verified by finite element numerical evaluation and spiral-welded pipe inspection experiment.
Deconvolution Imaging of Weak Reflective Pipe Defects Using Guided-Wave Signals Captured by a Scanning Receiver

Abstract:Guided-wave echoes from weak reflective pipe defects are usually interfered by coherent noise and difficult to interpret. In this paper, a deconvolution imaging method is proposed to reconstruct defect images from synthetically focused guided-wave signals, with enhanced axial resolution. A compact transducer, circumferentially scanning around the pipe, is used to receive guided-wave echoes from discontinuities at a distance. This method achieves a higher circumferential sampling density than arrayed transducers—up to 72 sampling spots per lap for a pipe with a diameter of 180 mm. A noise suppression technique is used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. The enhancement in both signal-to-noise ratio and axial resolution of the method is experimentally validated by the detection of two kinds of artificial defects: a pitting defect of 5 mm in diameter and 0.9 mm in maximum depth, and iron pieces attached to the pipe surface. A reconstructed image of the pitting defect is obtained with a 5.87 dB signal-to-noise ratio. It is revealed that a high circumferential sampling density is important for the enhancement of the inspection sensitivity, by comparing the images reconstructed with different down-sampling ratios. A modified full width at half maximum is used as the criterion to evaluate the circumferential extent of the region where iron pieces are attached, which is applicable for defects with inhomogeneous reflection intensity.
Imaging of Nonaxisymmetric Area Discontinuities in Pipes Using Guided Wave Synthetic Focusing

Abstract:The corrosion discontinuities that cause thickness loss in arbitrarily shaped areas are one of the major health problems for long-term operating pipes. In this paper, the guided wave synthetic focusing technique and deconvolution algorithm are used to reconstruct the images of area discontinuities in pipes. Firstly, the feasibility of this imaging technique is verified by numerical simulation. Two kinds of nonaxisymmetric area discontinuities are imaged: those with uniform thickness loss and those with progressive thickness loss. The axial length of an area discontinuity with uniform thickness loss can be quantitatively determined from the reconstructed image. As for the discontinuities with progressive thickness loss, the essential condition for guided wave reflection is the saltation of thickness-varying gradient. Secondly, the slices attached on the pipe and a scratch upon the pipe surface were imaged by experiment. The reconstructed discontinuity images successfully located the discontinuities and presented the discontinuities' thickness -variation features.

Abstract:In this paper, the quasi-static component (QSC) generation of longitudinal waves propagating in an isotropic pipe is investigated numerically and experimentally. The three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) simulations are first carried out to gain physical insights into the characteristics of QSC generation from longitudinal wave travelling in an isotropic pipe with weak material nonlinearity. By applying the axial displacement excitation in the FE model, L(0, 1) mode and L(0, 2) mode are excited simultaneously. Then, the generated QSC pulses are extracted using the phase reversal approach for analysis. It is found that the QSC pulses generated by L(0, 2) mode and L(0, 1) mode are L(0, 1) mode. Meanwhile, the shapes of QSC pulses at different locations are extracted and compared. In this study, a data pre-processing method is proposed to handle numerically calculated and subsequent experimentally measured displacement signals, and a nonlinear acoustic parameter is defined to evaluate the incipient damages. After that, an experiment is conducted to measure the QSCs induced by the propagation of longitudinal waves in an aluminum pipe. The experimental results indicate that the propagation of longitudinal waves in the aluminum pipe can induce the QSCs. Different levels of corrosion are created on the surface of the aluminum pipe and are assessed by the generated QSCs. The results show that the nonlinear acoustic parameter has a monotonically increasing trend with the growing severity of corrosion. The QSCs generated by longitudinal wave can be used to detect and evaluate the early-stage surface corrosion in the aluminum pipe.

Abstract:Transient wave reflection methods (TWRMs) have exhibited favorable capability in leak detection for elastic pipelines, but applications have demonstrated their relatively low accuracy for viscoelastic pipelines. This paper investigates the transient wave behaviour, the principal tenet for leak detection by TWRMs, in a leaky viscoelastic pipeline to understand the mechanism of wave modification by leaks and viscoelasticity. Based on the correspondence principle, this research derives analytical formulations of the leak-induced wave reflection and phase difference at any measurement point in a viscoelastic pipe. According to the measured reflection coefficient, an optimization algorithm is further developed to detect the leak. The methodologies are then assessed and discussed through sinusoidal and sigmoid perturbations in numerical and laboratory tests. The extensive analyses indicate that measurement distance and leak ratio affect the magnitude of the reflected wave, yet, the wave phase shift is relatively independent of the leak ratio for practical applications.

Scattering of the Fundamental Shear Guided Wave From a Surface-Breaking Crack in Plate-Like Structures

Abstract:Cracks in critical sections of steel structures pose a major safety concern in many industries. Existing high-frequency ultrasonic techniques offer high detection sensitivity to cracks but have poor inspection volume coverage, limiting their practical use for monitoring large areas of structures. Low-frequency guided waves have relatively high inspection area coverage and are currently used in pipeline monitoring for corrosion defects but face challenges in detecting critical cracks that often cause over an order of magnitude lower cross-sectional area loss. A study of scattering from small cracks in a thin-walled (<12 mm) section with an incident plane SH0 guided wave at higher frequencies but remaining below the SH1 cutoff is presented here using quasi-static approximations, the aim being to explore the possibility of using this regime for crack growth monitoring applications. A 3-D solution was developed using dimensional analysis, which showed that the SH0 reflection ratio is proportional to frequency to the power 1.5, to the effective crack size cubed, and is inversely proportional to the plate thickness and to the square root of the distance from the crack to the receiving sensor. Finite element analysis was used to validate these power coefficients and to calculate the proportionality constant. The results show that a higher inspection frequency offers improved sensitivity, but the validity of the results here is limited to the SH1 cutoff frequency. The predicted 3-D solution was validated by measurements on a pipe with a progressively grown notch.
Modelling of nonlinear wave scattering in a delaminated elastic bar

Abstract:Integrity of layered structures, extensively used in modern industry, strongly depends on the quality of their interfaces; poor adhesion or delamination can lead to a failure of the structure. Can nonlinear waves help us to control the quality of layered structures? In this paper, we numerically model the dynamics of a long longitudinal strain solitary wave in a split, symmetric layered bar. The recently developed analytical approach, based on matching two asymptotic multiple-scales expansions and the integrability theory of the Korteweg–de Vries equation by the inverse scattering transform, is used to develop an effective semi-analytical numerical approach for these types of problems. We also employ a direct finite-difference method and compare the numerical results with each other, and with the analytical predictions. The numerical modelling confirms that delamination causes fission of an incident solitary wave and, thus, can be used to detect the defect.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation in which acoustic emission (AE) wave was generated through a pencil lead break as a point source on two pipeline sections made of mild steel and titanium. The pipelines (bare, epoxy phenolic coated) were of same length but had two different diameters and wall thicknesses. The recorded AE signals were analysed using time and frequency domain signals, energy levels and wavelet transform to explore time-frequency features for the identification of wave modes. It is concluded that the damping behaviour of coating restricts the peaks of waves, decreases the decay time of waves and reduces the energy level in the coated pipeline. It is concluded that monitoring of coated pipeline wave propagation could be done effectively with sensor placement directly on the pipeline surface compared to sensor placement on the coating surface. A high wall thickness of pipeline results in a higher number of reflected waves and increases the decay time of waves. The coating on pipeline resists wave propagation, and different densities of coating layer and pipeline affect the velocity of the wave. This experimental work advance towards designing an alternative way to monitor changes in pipeline structures (e.g., corrosion under insulation applications).

Abstract:When pipe defects are generated above the T-type support structure location, it is difficult to distinguish the reflection signals caused by the weld bead at the support structure from the reflection echoes of pipe defects. Therefore, in order to effectively detect pipe defects, a waveform subtraction method with a circumferential shear horizontal (CSH) guided wave is proposed, which is generated by an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). First, a CSH0 guided wave mode with a center frequency of 500 kHz is selected to establish a three-dimensional model with and without pipe defects above the support structure. Following this, the influence of different widths of support structures on the echo signal is compared. Moreover, simulation and experimental results are used to compare the influence of different welding qualities on the detection results. Finally, the waveform subtraction method is used to process the simulation and experimental signals, and the influence of pipe defects with different lengths and depths is discussed. The results show that the non-through crack defect of 5 mm × 1 mm (length × depth) can be detected. The results show that this method can effectively detect the cracks by eliminating the influence of the weld echo, which provides a new concept for the detection of the defect above the support structure.

Study on Pipe Circumferential SH Guided Wave Characteristics

Abstract:SH guided wave dispersion characteristics and wave structure for free surface isotropic elastic pipe circumferential waveguide were calculated and analyzed to guide pipeline inspection, and these characteristics were compared with those of the plate SH (shear horizontal) guided wave. A new propagation direction arc calculation algorithm was proposed for pipe circumferential SH guided wave formulation. The study results show that the bigger the ratio of inner and outer radii, the more the pipe circumferential SH guided wave will resemble the plate SH guided wave in the dispersion characteristics and wave structure, and plate SH0 mode and pipe circumferential CSH0 mode are suitable for defect detection.
Interaction of in-plane waves with a structured penetrable line defect in an elastic lattice

Abstract:We consider the scattering of in-plane waves that interact with an edge of a structured {penetrable (inertial)} line defect contained in a triangular lattice, composed of periodically placed masses interconnected by massless elastic rods. The steady state problem for time-harmonic excitation is converted into a vector Wiener-Hopf equation using Fourier transform. The matrix Wiener-Hopf kernel of this equation describes all dynamic phenomena engaged in the scattering process, which includes instances where localised interfacial waves can emerge along structured defect. This information is exploited to identify the dependency of the existence of these waves on the incident wave parameters and properties of the inertial defect. The symmetry in the structure of scattering medium allows us to convert the vectorial problem into a pair of scalar Wiener-Hopf equations posed along the lattice row containing the defect. The solution embodies the exact representation of scattered field, in terms of a contour integral in the complex plane, that includes the contributions of evanescent and propagating waves. The solution reveals that in the remote lattice, the reflected and transmitted components of incident field are {accompanied by dynamic modes from three distinct symmetry classes in addition to localised interfacial waves}. These classes correspond to tensile modes acting transverse to the defected lattice row, shear modes that act parallel to this row, and wave modes represented as a mixture of these two responses. Benchmark finite element calculations are provided to validate results against the obtained semi-analytical solution, which involve numerical computations of the contour integrals. Graphical illustrations demonstrate special dynamic responses encountered during the wave scattering process, including dynamic anisotropy, negative reflection and negative refraction.

Abstract:Hidden corrosion defects can lead to dangerous accidents such as leakage of toxic materials causing extreme environmental and economic consequences. Ultrasonic guided waves showed good potential detecting distributed corrosion in pipeline networks at sufficiently large distances. To simplify signal analysis, traditional guided wave methods use low frequencies where only fundamental modes exist; hence, the small, localized defects are usually barely detectable. Novel techniques frequently use higher order guided wave modes that propagate around the circumference of the pipe and are more sensitive to the localized changes in the wall thickness. However current high order mode guided wave technology commonly uses either non-dispersive shear modes or higher order mode cluster (HOMC) waves that are mostly sensitive to surface defects. As the number of application cases of high order modes to corrosion detection is still limited, a huge potential is available to seek for other modes that can offer improved resolution and sensitivity to localized corrosion type defects. The objective of this work was to investigate higher order modes for corrosion detection and to determine the most promising ones in sense of excitability, leakage losses, propagation distance, and potential simplicity in the analysis. The selection of the proper mode is discussed with the support of phase and group velocity dispersion curves, out of plane and in plane distributions over the thickness and on surface of the sample, and leakage losses due to water load. The analysis led to selection of symmetric S3 mode, while the excitation of it was demonstrated through finite element simulations, taking into account the size of phased array aperture and apodization law and considering two-sided mode generation. Finally, theoretical estimations were confirmed with experiments, demonstrating the ability to generate and receive selected mode. It was shown that S3 mode is a good candidate for corrosion screening around the circumference of the pipe, as it has sufficient propagation distance, can be generated with conventional ultrasonic (UT) phased arrays, has sufficiently high group velocity to be distinguished from co-existing modes, and is sensitive to the loss of wall thickness.
