Abstract:Background: Fatigue is one of the most distressing and prevalent symptoms reported by paediatric oncology patients. With the increase in cancer survival rate, how to control children's cancer-related fatigue during treatments or the coexisting period with the disease to further increase their quality of life has become the focus of medical teams who provide care to children with cancer. Objectives: The objective of this systematic review was to synthesise the best available evidence concerning the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions on fatigue in children and adolescents with cancer. Search strategy: The search strategy aimed to find studies published between 1960 and 2010, in either the English or Chinese languages. Reference lists of studies that met the inclusion criteria were also searched for additional studies. Types of studies: This review included randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies that examined the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue in children and adolescents with cancer. Types of participants: Children and adolescents aged between one to 18 years old, with cancer either during or after the chemotherapy. The types of cancer included were acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia, lymphoma and solid tumours. Types of interventions: Non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue in children and adolescents with cancer including: activity enhancement (exercise, physical activity), psychosocial interventions, cognitive behavioural therapy, stress management, relaxation, nutrition consultation, massage and educational interventions. The intervention descriptions included the length, frequency, setting and intervention providers. Types of outcome measures: The outcome measures considered fatigue scores assessment. Types of setting: The review considered studies conducted either in a hospital or a community setting. Data collection and synthesis: The data were extracted and synthesised using the standardised data extraction tool and synthesis function offered by the Joanna Briggs Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument. Results: The review included six studies - five English-language papers and one Chinese-language paper. Meta-analysis did not show a statistically significant impact on the effectiveness of exercise interventions in reducing overall fatigue in children and adolescents with cancer. Exercise interventions did lead to a statistically significant improvement (p = 0.01) in general fatigue (i.e. tiredness, physical weakness) (effect size = -0.76; 95% Confidence Interval -1.35 to -0.17). Conclusions: The results of this systematic review show that exercise interventions can effectively reduce the level of general fatigue of children aged six to 18 years. No strong conclusions can be made for the use of massage therapy or health education measures, as there was only one article for each of these interventions. Implications for practice: The review provides an evidenced-based guide to future priorities for clinical practice. Exercise intervention could reduce the level of general fatigue of children aged six to 18 years. In particular, exercise interventions for fatigue are feasible and safe. Implications for research: There is still a lack of rigorous research on this specific topic. Further research requires more rigorous study design and reporting of methodological issues, such as randomised controlled trials using concealment of allocation. Other non-pharmacological interventions for this problem should also be examined, including cognitive behavioural therapy, stress management, relaxation, support groups and massage therapy.

Abstract:Health-promoting self-care behavior emphasizing positive lifestyle practices may improve the health and quality of life of adults. One variable that may influence health-related decisions is the status of basic needs as described by Maslow. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among basic need satisfaction, health-promoting self-care behavior, and selected demographic variables in a sample of community-dwelling adults. A convenience sample of 84 community-dwelling adults was recruited to complete the Basic Need Satisfaction Inventory, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, and demographic information. Results of the study indicated that self-actualization, physical, and love/belonging need satisfaction accounted for 64% of the variance in health-promoting self-care behavior. The findings of this study are consistent with Maslow’s theory of human motivation and suggest that persons who are more fulfilled and content with themselves and their lives, have physical need satisfaction, and have positive connections with others may be able to make better decisions regarding positive health-promoting self-care behaviors.
Physical Activity as a Treatment for Cancer-Related Fatigue in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most common and distressing symptoms in paediatric oncology. Based on previous studies, physical activity interventions are considered to be effective in reducing CRF in adult cancer patients. Aim: The aim of this systematic review is to investigate whether physical activity interventions can reduce CRF in paediatric patients undergoing cancer treatment. Methodology: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and Sport-Discus in October 2021 to identify intervention studies examining the effects of physical activity on CRF in cancer patients ≤ 21 years of age. Their methodological quality was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tool. Results: A total of 20 studies (seven randomized-controlled, six quasi-experimental and seven single-arm intervention trials) were included in the review. Nine studies reported significant positive effects of physical activity interventions on CRF in group comparison or within groups. Eleven trials reported no significant changes in CRF. Conclusion: Physical activity as a therapeutic intervention in paediatric oncology may have the potential to reduce CRF in childhood cancer patients undergoing cancer treatment. Further high-quality studies with large samples are needed to verify these results and to assess the interdependence of dose and response of physical activity interventions.

Abstract:Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent and debilitating side effect of cancer treatment that can persist for years posttreatment, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Given the limited efficacy of pharmacological treatments, nonpharmacological interventions are gaining attention as effective management strategies for CRF. This review aims to provide an overview of the most common nonpharmacological interventions for CRF management, including exercise therapies, psychosocial interventions, sensory art therapy, light therapy, nutritional management, traditional Chinese medicine therapies, sleep management, combination therapy, and health education. By synthesizing the findings of high-quality literature, this review presents the definition of each therapy, along with their advantages and disadvantages in treating patients with CRF. Additionally, it addresses the role of oncology nurses in the nonpharmacological management of CRF. In summary, this review aims to inform oncology nurses about the prevalent nonpharmacological interventions for CRF and explore their clinical application to facilitate the development of effective CRF management strategies in clinical practice.

Abstract:The difficulty in the prediction of the complicated solid-state structure of boronic acid derivatives, resulting from the complex pathway of reversible covalent interactions, represents a significant obstacle to the development of a new generation of advanced supramolecular systems such as covalent organic frameworks of efficient anticancer drugs. In this contribution, various 2D 11B-11B solid-state NMR correlation techniques supported by DFT calculations were explored to formulate a reliable tool for monitoring the covalent assembly of boronic acid residues in the solid state. This way, the self-condensation of bortezomib molecules was investigated, different local constitutions of boroxine motifs were unveiled, and the previously unreported boroxine structures of bortezomib polymorphs exhibiting secondary coordination were discovered and described in detail. The recorded 11B NMR parameters responded sensitively to subtle changes in the local geometries, which were reliably interpreted and directly visualized by the DFT calculations. A uniform 2.6 Å distance in bortezomib 11B-11B spin pairs was conclusively identified by the through-space 11B-11B double-quantum (DQ) coherence build-up curves, whereas distinct 2D 11B-11B DQ correlation patterns revealed unique boroxine structures existing in the crystalline as well as amorphous state. The boroxine rings were found to be internally stabilized through the transformation of the trigonal boron sites toward tetrahedral geometry, as the secondary five-membered rings were formed. This way, the nature of bortezomib polymorphism is disclosed, and an efficient strategy for exploring the assembly of boronic acid derivatives in the solid state, for which no crystallographic data are available, is thus demonstrated.

Abstract:Background: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is common among patients with cancer. Various interventions have been reported to reduce fatigue, and some evidence suggests that nurse-led interventions may be effective in the management of CRF. A systematic review was conducted to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions for CRF in patients with cancer and survivors. Objective: The aim of this study was to review and appraise the evidence for the effectiveness of different types of nurse-led interventions on fatigue in patients with cancer and survivors. Methods: Electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were searched to identify studies published from January 2013 to October 2023. The studies that described nurse-led interventions in patients with cancer or survivors regardless of treatment duration, modes of intervention delivery, and any based intervention were included. The studies were excluded if no fatigue was an outcome measure. Results: Twelve studies from 2013 to 2023 were included and eligible for the review. Nine studies obtained a Jadad score of 3 or more, indicating high quality for the quality assessment. Eleven of the included studies reported a significant effect of the nurse-led interventions in reducing fatigue in patients with cancer or survivors. Conclusions: Nurse-led interventions that focus on multidisciplinary, exercise, psychological, and behavioral approaches appear promising in the management of CRF. More research is needed in order to determine the most acceptable forms of intervention. Implications for practice: The development of evidence-based interventions for managing CRF is significant to nursing practice.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers, the symptoms and treatment of which can cause negative emotions like anxiety, depression, and cancer-related fatigue (CRF). Nonpharmacological interventions, serving as alternative therapies, can greatly alleviate CRF in lung cancer patients. Previous meta-analyses have reported nonpharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients, but the results may be conflicting, and the reporting and methodological qualities remain unknown. Moreover, there is limited evidence to identify efficient and safe non-pharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients. This study aims to assess the therapeutic efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients through a network meta-analysis.METHODS: Relevant literatures reporting non-pharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients published before June 2021 will be searched in online databases, including Wanfang, VP Information Chinese Journal Service Platform, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese BioMedicine Literature Database, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of science. Two reviewers will be independently responsible for study selection, quality appraisal, and data extraction. Data analysis will be performed using the STATA14.0 and GEMTC 0.14.3 software.RESULTS: This meta-analysis will provide additional and stronger evidences for nonpharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients. Our findings will be conductive to make therapeutic decisions by clinicians.CONCLUSION: This study will provide a reliable evidence-based basis for non-pharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients.ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval was not required for this study. Abstract:Objective: This scoping review will aim to identify the domains contributing to cancer-related fatigue in childhood cancer survivors and will explore whether non-pharmacological interventions have addressed these domains. This information will help to better define cancer-related fatigue, identify knowledge gaps in the literature, and direct future research efforts. Introduction: Cancer-related fatigue is a commonly reported symptom in aftercare following childhood cancer treatments. However, its operational definition and contributors are unclear, which makes it difficult to select targets and design adequate interventions. In this scoping review, we will identify contributing domains to help clarify their role as key characteristics of cancer-related fatigue. We will then review the evidence as to whether these contributing domains have been addressed by non-pharmacological interventions aimed at fatigue. Inclusion criteria: We will include articles on cancer-related fatigue following childhood cancer treatments (age at diagnosis ≤ 21 years) and non-pharmacological interventions aimed at reducing fatigue. Both will retain qualitative and quantitative studies will be considered for inclusion. Methods: In accordance with the JBI methodological framework for conducting scoping reviews, we will perform a search in PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane Library, Grey Matters, OAlster, and OpenGrey. We will use the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. Studies published in English or French will be included, with no date limitations. The data collection and analysis of eligible articles will be performed by two independent reviewers and will be classified in summary tables. The findings on contributors to cancer-related fatigue in childhood cancer survivors will be synthesized in a cross table linking contributor domains with intervention type.

Abstract:Background Cancer‐related fatigue (CRF) emerges as a common symptom in pediatric cancer patients during treatment. Exercise interventions are increasingly being used as CRF interventions to improve CRF in children with cancer. Aim The objective of this meta‐analysis was to synthesize the best available evidence concerning the effectiveness of exercise interventions for cancer‐related fatigue in children with cancer. Interventions for cancer-related fatigue: a scoping review

Abstract:Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is common and can be distressing for some survivors. There is increasing interest in measuring levels of CRF, highlighting its impact on quality of life. This review describes the nature and scope of evidence relating to interventions for CRF. Scoping review methodology was used to identify studies, extract data, collate and summarise results. Data were collated according to cancer tumour streams, stage of illness and the types of trial interventions. A total of 447 trials and 37 systematic reviews met the inclusion criteria. Nine papers reported longitudinal results. Populations studied were predominantly of mixed cancer diagnoses and breast cancer. The most frequent interventions were exercise, pharmacological, psycho-education and mind-body interventions. Fatigue was identified as a primary outcome measure (OM) in 58% of studies, with 58 different fatigue measures reported. Emerging evidence exists for the effectiveness of fatigue interventions for some cancer types. More research on interventions with participants with the same cancer type and illness phase is needed. Measurement of severity and impact of CRF using fewer, robust OMs will permit comparisons across studies.
Various interventions for cancer-related fatigue in patients with breast cancer: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the effects of various intervention approaches on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in patients with breast cancer. Method: Computer searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang databases from their establishment to June 2023. Selection was made using inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 77 articles were included to compare the effects of 12 interventions on patients with breast cancer. Results: Seventy-seven studies with 12 various interventions were examined. The network findings indicated that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) (SMD, -1.56; 95%CI, -3.08~-0.04), Chinese traditional exercises (CTE) (SMD, -0.85; 95%CI, -1.34~-0.36), aerobic exercise (AE) (SMD, -0.77; 95%CI, -1.09~-0.45), multimodal exercise (ME) (SMD, -0.75; 95%CI, -1.26~-0.25), music interventions (MI) (SMD, -0.74; 95%CI, -1.45~-0.03), and yoga (YG) (SMD, -0.44; 95%CI, -0.83 to -0.06) can reduce CRF more than the control group (CG). For relaxation exercises (RE) (MD, -6.69; 95%CI, -9.81~-3.57), MI (MD, -5.45; 95%CI, -7.98~-2.92), AE (MD, -4.34; 95%CI, -5.90~-2.78), ME (MD, -3.47; 95%CI, -4.95~-1.99), YG (MD, -2.07; 95%CI, -3.56~-0.57), and mindfulness training (MD, -1.68; 95%CI, -2.91~-0.46), PSQI improvement was superior to CG. In addition, for CTE (MD, 11.39; 95%CI, 4.11-18.66), YG (MD, 11.28; 95%CI, 1.63-20.93), and AE (MD, 9.34; 95%CI, 0.26~18.42), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast improvement was superior to CG. Conclusion: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective measure for alleviating CRF in patients with breast cancer and Relaxation exercises (RE) is the most effective measure for improving sleep quality. In addition, Chinese traditional exercises (CTE) is the best measure for enhancing quality of life. Additional randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are expected to further investigate the efficacy and mechanisms of these interventions. Physical Activity Promotion Programmes in Childhood Cancer Patients and Their Impact on Fatigue and Pain: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Cancer is one of the main causes of death in children, however, the techniques and interventions applied allow the cure of 80% of diagnosed cases. The aim of this review was to determine the benefits of a health and physical activity promotion programme to reduce pain and fatigue symptoms in children and adolescents with cancer. The databases PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science and PEDro were searched between December 2020 and January 2021 to elaborate this review, using the keywords child, cancer, exercise, fatigue and pain. The review was preregistered in PROSPERO (ID CRD42021262183). Six studies, out of 937 identified at baseline, were finally included in the review: four randomised controlled trials and two quasi-experimental studies. The total sample size of all the included studies was of 474 participants with very different types of cancer and evolution, and outcome variables were pain, fatigue, physical activity level, self-efficacy and quality of life. A health and physical activity promotion programme seems to improve fatigue in paediatric cancer patients and survivors, but no significant results were found related to pain.

Abstract:Introduction: Fatigue is the most prevalent symptom for patients with a primary brain tumour (PBT), significantly reducing quality of life and limiting daily activities. Currently, there are limited options for managing cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in patients with a PBT, using non-pharmacological methods. The objective of this scoping review is to identify current and emerging evidence in relation to non-pharmacological CRF interventions for patients with a PBT. Methods and analysis: Electronic databases OVID and EBSCO platforms: MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL will be searched. In addition, PROSPERO, The Cochrane Library and ISI Web of Science will be searched. Trials registries CENTRAL and the International Clinical Trials Registry platform will also be searched for ongoing research. Inclusion criteria: studies from 2006 onwards, primary research on non-pharmacological interventions in patients with a PBT (>18 years). A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flow diagram will be utilised to summarise the screening process and results.Quantitative data will be analysed descriptively, while content analysis will be used for qualitative data.Findings will map the existing and emerging evidence on non-pharmacological interventions for CRF in patients with PBTs. This will provide insights into the extent and nature of the evidence in this evolving field, identifying gaps in knowledge and research priorities, and guide further investigations in this area. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval is not required for this scoping review. Findings will be disseminated via relevant peer-reviewed journals, PhD thesis, conference presentations, and shared with relevant charities and health professionals.
Reducing fatigue in pediatric rheumatic conditions: a systematic review

Abstract:Background: Although fatigue is a prevalent distressing symptom in children and adolescents with Pediatric Rheumatic Conditions (PRCs), intervention studies designed for reducing fatigue in PRCs are limited. Aim: To systematically review evidence regarding the efficacy of interventions intended to reduce fatigue in patients with PRCs. Methods: Comprehensive electronic searches were performed in PubMed/ MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and Cinahl. The risk of bias was assessed using the 'Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials' and 'Quality Assessment Tool for Before-After Studies With No Control Group' for respectively studies with and without a control group. Results: Ten out of 418 studies were included with a total of 240 participants (age range 5-23 years). Interventions included land-based and aquatic-based exercise therapy, prednisolone, vitamin-D and creatine supplementation, psychological therapy and a transition program into an adult rheumatology program. Fatigue was assessed with self-reported questionnaires in all included studies. Land-based exercise therapy was effective in one pre-post intervention study, whereas not effective in two randomized controlled trials. Aquatic-based exercise therapy was found more effective than land-based exercise therapy. Two placebo-controlled studies showed a significant positive effect in reducing subjective fatigue with prednisolone and vitamin-D. Creatine was not found effective. Cognitive therapy was effective in one pre-post intervention study, while one RCT did not show an effect in reducing fatigue. A transition program based on health education showed a small reducing effect, however, it was not clear if this was a significant effect. Six studies showed a high risk of bias, three studies a moderate risk, and one study had a low risk of bias. Conclusions: Insufficient evidence is provided to substantiate the efficacy of current interventions to reduce fatigue in PRCs. The low number of studies, non-comparable interventions, risk of bias, and inconclusive outcomes of the included studies denote future research should focus on intervention studies aimed at the treatment of fatigue in children and adolescents with PRCs. Identification of possible underlying biological and psychosocial mechanisms as possible treatment targets to reduce complaints of fatigue in children and adolescents with PRCs is warranted.

Abstract:Increased cancer survivorship means more people are living with cancer-related fatigue (CRF), which is associated with activity performance limitations, restricted participation in meaningful life roles, and reduced quality of life. To identify whether non-pharmacological interventions that are effective in minimizing CRF also have an impact on everyday activity performance and participation outcomes for adult cancer survivors. This is a systematic review with narrative synthesis. Eight databases were searched (Medline, CINAHL, PsychINFO, EMBASE, Scopus, OT Seeker, CENTRAL, Cochrane SR database), from 2000 to 2020 for randomized controlled trials of effective non-pharmacological CRF interventions in adult cancer survivors with fatigue. A total of 5,762 studies were identified of which 29 studies were reviewed. In 28 studies, quality of life was investigated as a primary or secondary outcome, where concepts of participation or activity performance were used. Review findings indicate there is insufficient evidence to determine whether activity performance and participation is affected by CRF interventions.

Abstract:Background: Cancer-related fatigue is reported as the most common and distressing symptom experienced by patients with cancer. It can exacerbate the experience of other symptoms, negatively affect mood, interfere with the ability to carry out everyday activities, and negatively impact on quality of life. Educational interventions may help people to manage this fatigue or to cope with this symptom, and reduce its overall burden. Despite the importance of education for managing cancer-related fatigue there are currently no systematic reviews examining this approach. Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of educational interventions for managing cancer-related fatigue in adults. Search methods: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, ERIC, OTseeker and PEDro up to 1st November 2016. We also searched trials registries. Selection criteria: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of educational interventions focused on cancer-related fatigue where fatigue was a primary outcome. Studies must have aimed to evaluate the effect of educational interventions designed specifically to manage cancer-related fatigue, or to evaluate educational interventions targeting a constellation of physical symptoms or quality of life where fatigue was the primary focus. The studies could have compared educational interventions with no intervention or wait list controls, usual care or attention controls, or an alternative intervention for cancer-related fatigue in adults with any type of cancer. Data collection and analysis: Two review authors independently screened studies for inclusion and extracted data. We resolved differences in opinion by discussion. Trial authors were contacted for additional information. A third independent person checked the data extraction. The main outcome considered in this review was cancer-related fatigue. We assessed the evidence using GRADE and created a 'Summary of Findings' table. Main results: We included 14 RCTs with 2213 participants across different cancer diagnoses. Four studies used only 'information-giving' educational strategies, whereas the remainder used mainly information-giving strategies coupled with some problem-solving, reinforcement, or support techniques. Interventions differed in delivery including: mode of delivery (face to face, web-based, audiotape, telephone); group or individual interventions; number of sessions provided (ranging from 2 to 12 sessions); and timing of intervention in relation to completion of cancer treatment (during or after completion). Most trials compared educational interventions to usual care and meta-analyses compared educational interventions to usual care or attention controls. Methodological issues that increased the risk of bias were evident including lack of blinding of outcome assessors, unclear allocation concealment in over half of the studies, and generally small sample sizes. Using the GRADE approach, we rated the quality of evidence as very low to moderate, downgraded mainly due to high risk of bias, unexplained heterogeneity, and imprecision.There was moderate quality evidence of a small reduction in fatigue intensity from a meta-analyses of eight studies (1524 participants; standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.52 to -0.04) comparing educational interventions with usual care or attention control. We found low quality evidence from twelve studies (1711 participants) that educational interventions had a small effect on general/overall fatigue (SMD -0.27, 95% CI -0.51 to -0.04) compared to usual care or attention control. There was low quality evidence from three studies (622 participants) of a moderate size effect of educational interventions for reducing fatigue distress (SMD -0.57, 95% CI -1.09 to -0.05) compared to usual care, and this could be considered clinically significant. Pooled data from four studies (439 participants) found a small reduction in fatigue interference with daily life (SMD -0.35, 95% CI -0.54 to -0.16; moderate quality evidence). No clear effects on fatigue were found related to type of cancer treatment or timing of intervention in relation to completion of cancer treatment, and there were insufficient data available to determine the effect of educational interventions on fatigue by stage of disease, tumour type or group versus individual intervention.Three studies (571 participants) provided low quality evidence for a reduction in anxiety in favour of the intervention group (mean difference (MD) -1.47, 95% CI -2.76 to -0.18) which, for some, would be considered clinically significant. Two additional studies not included in the meta-analysis also reported statistically significant improvements in anxiety in favour of the educational intervention, whereas a third study did not. Compared with usual care or attention control, educational interventions showed no significant reduction in depressive symptoms (four studies, 881 participants, SMD -0.12, 95% CI -0.47 to 0.23; very low quality evidence). Three additional trials not included in the meta-analysis found no between-group differences in the symptoms of depression. No between-group difference was evident in the capacity for activities of daily living or physical function when comparing educational interventions with usual care (4 studies, 773 participants, SMD 0.33, 95% CI -0.10 to 0.75) and the quality of evidence was low. Pooled evidence of low quality from two of three studies examining the effect of educational interventions compared to usual care found an improvement in global quality of life on a 0-100 scale (MD 11.47, 95% CI 1.29 to 21.65), which would be considered clinically significant for some.No adverse events were reported in any of the studies. Authors' conclusions: Educational interventions may have a small effect on reducing fatigue intensity, fatigue's interference with daily life, and general fatigue, and could have a moderate effect on reducing fatigue distress. Educational interventions focused on fatigue may also help reduce anxiety and improve global quality of life, but it is unclear what effect they might have on capacity for activities of daily living or depressive symptoms. Additional studies undertaken in the future are likely to impact on our confidence in the conclusions.The incorporation of education for the management of fatigue as part of routine care appears reasonable. However, given the complex nature of this symptom, educational interventions on their own are unlikely to optimally reduce fatigue or help people manage its impact, and should be considered in conjunction with other interventions. Just how educational interventions are best delivered, and their content and timing to maximise outcomes, are issues that require further research.

Abstract:Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common symptom among patients with cancer, with a prevalence of >49%. CRF significantly affects the quality of life of patients and may also affect their overall survival. Pharmacological interventions serve as a last resort after carefully weighing the risks and benefits, with limited benefits for patients, many side effects, and adverse reactions. Compared to traditional medicine, nutritional approaches have fewer side effects, are highly accepted by patients, and do not affect the antitumor treatment of patients. Many studies have shown that nutritional approaches, as a form of complementary and alternative medicine, help improve the symptoms of CRF and the quality of life of patients. This study was designed to examine nutritional approaches to CRF and assess their effectiveness of nutritional approaches in improving CRF. We present an overview of clinical trials investigating nutritional approaches for CRF that have been published over the last 2 decades. A total of 33 records were obtained from 3 databases: Web of Science, MEDLINE, and PubMed. Some nutritional approaches, such as melatonin, PG2, and S-adenosyl-l-methionine, are potential options for CRF treatment. However, the trials included in the review varied widely in quality, most were weak in methodology, and there is currently insufficient evidence to conclude with certainty the effectiveness of nutritional approaches in reducing CRF. Therefore, the design and methods used in future complementary and alternative medicine trials should be more rigorous.
