Abstract:Terahertz VRT laser spectra of four (H2O)2 intermolecular vibrations consisting of 362 transitions have been measured between 87 and 108 cm−1 with ca. 2 MHz precision. The results differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from the predictions of dimer potentials tested. The spectra also reveal an ordering of the intermolecular vibrations which differs dramatically from that predicted by normal mode analysis. Strong coupling is indicated between the low barrier tunneling motions and the intermolecular vibrations as well as among different vibrations. In particular the 102.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 vibration assigned as the acceptor wag (ν8) exhibits two types of perturbations. In one of these a component of Ka=1 coupling with a tunneling component of Ka=0 in the 108 cm−1 acceptor twist (ν11) vibration. There is also an indication that the 103.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 band assigned as the donor in-plane bend (ν6) is coupled to the acceptor wag resulting in a lower of the in-plane bend frequency and a higher acceptor wag frequency. Detailed analysis of the VRT levels confirms the extreme nonrigidity of this complex, indicating that the use of approximate models with reduced dimensionality to calculate its properties are likely to fail.

Abstract:The low-lying isomers of cationic water cluster (HO) have been globally explored by using particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Compared with previous results, our searching method covers a wide range of structural isomers of (HO) and therefore turns out to be more effective. With these local minima, geometry optimization and vibrational analysis are performed for the most interesting clusters at second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)/aug-cc-pVDZ level, and their energies are further refined at MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ and coupled-cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The interaction energies using the complete basis set limits at MP2 level are also reported. The relationships between their structure arrangement and their energies are discussed. Based on the results of thermal simulation, structural change from a four-numbered ring to a tree-like structure occurs at T ≈ 45 K, and the relative population of six lowest-free-energy isomers is found to exceed 4% at some point within the studied temperature range. Studies reveal that, among these six isomers, two new-found isomers constitute 10% of isomer population at 180 K, and the experimental spectra can be better explained with inclusions of the two isomers. The molecular orbitals for six representative cationic water clusters are also studied. Through topological and reduced density gradient analysis, we investigated the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these water cluster radical cations.

Abstract:Eight patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (6 patients with mycosis fungoides, 1 patient with Sézary's syndrome, 1 patient with low-grade malignant lymphoma, unclassified) were treated with TP-5, a synthetic pentapeptide having the same biologic activity as the thymic hormone thymopoietin. TP-5 was administered three times weekly at a dosage of 50 mg subcutaneously in 6 patients, 50 mg intravenously in 1 patient, and 100 mg subcutaneously in 1 patient. Clinical evaluation at the end of the trial disclosed improvement in 4 patients (2 patients with mycosis fungoides, 1 patient with Sézary's syndrome, 1 patient with low-grade malignant lymphoma, unclassified), deterioration in 3 patients with mycosis fungoides and no change in 1 patient with mycosis fungoides. As TP-5 evidently exerts some effect on cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, further investigations of its therapeutic potential in this group of diseases seem worthwhile.
Infrared spectra of the water-CO2 complex in the 4.3-3.6 micron region and determination of the ground state tunneling splitting for HDO-CO2

Abstract:Spectra of water-CO2 dimers are studied using a tunable mid-infrared source to probe a pulsed slit jet supersonic expansion. H2O-CO2 and D2O-CO2 are observed in the CO2 nu3 fundamental region (~2350 cm-1), D2O-CO2 is also observed in the D2O nu3 fundamental region (~2790 cm-1), and HDO-CO2 is observed in the HDO O-D stretch fundamental region (~2720 cm-1), all for the first time in these regions. Analysis of the spectra yields excited state rotational parameters and vibrational shifts. They also yield the first experimental values of the ground state internal rotation tunneling splittings for D2O-CO2 (0.003 cm-1) and HDO-CO2 (0.0234 cm-1). The latter value is a direct determination made possible by the reduced symmetry of HDO-CO2. These results provide stringent and easily interpreted tests for theoretical water - CO2 potential energy surface calculations.

H2O Trimer: Rigorous 12D Quantum Calculations of Intermolecular Vibrational States, Tunneling Splittings, and Low-Frequency Spectrum

Abstract:Water trimer, as the smallest water cluster in which the three-body interactions can manifest, is arguably the most important hydrogen-bonded trimer. We present the methodology that for the first time allows rigorous twelve-dimensional (12D) quantum calculation of its intermolecular vibration-tunneling eigenstates, with the monomers treated as rigid. These 12D eigenstates are used to simulate the low-frequency absorption spectrum of the trimer, for direct comparison with the measured far-infrared (FIR) spectrum of water trimer in helium nanodroplets. The 12D calculations reveal weak coupling between the large-amplitude torsional and intermolecular stretching vibrations. The calculated torsional tunneling splittings are in excellent agreement with spectroscopic results. There are visible differences between the spectrum simulated using the 12D eigenstates and that based on our earlier 9D calculations where the stretching vibrations are not included. The peaks in the 12D spectrum are generally shifted to slightly lower energies relative to those in the 9D spectrum, as well as the measured FIR spectrum, and are often split by intermolecular stretch-bend Fermi resonances.

Abstract:The low solubility of solute molecules in a nonpolar solvent and the weak interactions between solute and solvent molecules can be utilized to study isolated solute molecules. The in-situ inclusion process of H 2 O and D 2 O in CCl 4 was observed by infrared absorption spectroscopy. These in-situ spectra showed deviations from the monomer spectrum over time attributed to the formation of water dimers. The water dimer spectrum was extracted by subtraction between the time-series spectra. DFT calculations allowed the assignment of the four vibrational modes in the dimer spectrum. The most notable changes from the monomer to the dimer spectra were in the donor molecule, which showed a peak redshift and a large increase in the absorption strengths, especially for the donor OH (OD) bond which participates in the hydrogen bonding to the acceptor water molecule. Using free energy calculations, the equilibrium constants of H 2 O and D 2 O dimers dissolved in CCl 4 were determined to be 0.013 and 0.015, respectively, and the concentrations were determined to be ~1 μ M. The intensity ratio between the v3 mode of the water monomer and the vBD mode of the dimer calculated through DFT was found to be in close agreement with the ratios from the monomer and dimer spectra. In contrast, when the solvent was chloroform, the increase of the vBD mode of the dimer from the experiment did not agree with that from the calculations, indicating that the specific interaction of the water molecules with chloroform should be considered.

Abstract:Three electric quadrupole transitions in the second overtone band of D2 are newly measured by comb-referenced cavity ring down spectroscopy around 1.18 μm. These extremely weak transitions (line intensities smaller than 10−29 cm/molecule) are the first to be detected in the (3–0) band of D2. The spectra of the O(3), O(2), and Q(2) lines near 8321, 8446, and 8607 cm−1, respectively, are recorded at room temperature for pressure values ranging between 100 and 600 Torr. Accurate transition frequencies and line intensities of the three D2 transitions are determined from a line fitting procedure using beyond-Voigt profiles, including strong Dicke narrowing. Considering statistical fit errors and possible biases due to the interference with water lines (which are six orders of magnitude stronger than the studied D2 lines), total uncertainties on the frequencies extrapolated at zero pressure are estimated below 14 MHz (∼4.7 × 10−4 cm−1). The derived experimental frequencies and intensities are compared to ab initio values. An overall agreement is achieved, confirming the positional accuracy of the most advanced theoretical calculations.

Abstract:A novel Raman jet-spectrometer is used to study the Fermi resonance between the OH bending overtone and OH stretching fundamental in small cyclic water clusters (H 2 O) n with n = 3, 4, 5. The new setup features a recirculating vacuum system which reduces the gas consumption by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude and enables long-term measurements of very weak Raman signals. Raman spectra measured from highly diluted expansions with unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio are presented and cluster-specific intensity ratios and effective coupling constants are derived using Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo methods, yielding a high probability for an almost "perfect" resonance for the tetramer and pentamer, i.e. a close frequency match of bend overtone and stretch fundamental with intensity ratios close to 1, but a larger coupling constant for the trimer, with best estimates close to W 5 ≲ 50 cm −1 < W 4 ≲ 60 cm −1 < W 3 ≈ 65 cm −1 .

Abstract:The weakly bound dimer water-carbon disulfide is studied by ab initio structure theory and high-resolution infrared spectroscopy. The calculations yield three stable minima in the potential energy surface, all planar. The most stable, Isomer 1, was observed previously by microwave spectroscopy. It has C2v symmetry, an S-O bond, and a linear O-S-C-S backbone. Isomer 2, the next most stable, has not been considered previously by theory or experiment. It also has C2v symmetry, but with a side-by-side structure. Isomer 3, which is slightly less stable, is side-by-side with one O-H bond pointing toward an S atom. The first gas phase water-CS2 infrared spectra are reported. For Isomer 1, H2O-, HDO-, and D2O-CS2 are observed in the CS2 ν1 + ν3 region, H2O-CS2 in the H2O ν2 bend region, and D2O-CS2 in the D2O ν1 and ν3 stretch regions. The latter ν3 spectrum enables an experimental determination of the A rotational parameter, which turns out to be larger than expected. The new Isomer 2 is observed by means of a band in the H2O ν2 region, confirming its C2v symmetry and calculated structure.

Abstract:The photochemistry of the water molecule has revealed a wealth of quantum phenomena, which arise from the involvement of several coupled electronic states with very different potential energy surfaces. Most recently, dissociation from single rotational levels of its C̃(1)B1 state near 124 nm has been attributed to a vibronically coupled decay via the lower Ã-state surface, despite a large vertical energy gap of 2.8 eV. Similar conclusions have been reached for subsequent experimental data for D2O. The present paper presents further experimental data for HOD and for both the H+OD(X) and D+OH(X) products. Unlike the cases for H2O and D2O, the vibrational populations for hydroxyl products do not follow a smooth distribution with v(OH∕OD). In particular, for OH there is a clear alternation in population for all the strong peaks, with odd v favoured over even v. These experimental data are analysed using new MRCI+Q calculations, which have been used to generate potential surfaces and associated non-adiabatic matrix elements for transition from the adiabatic C̃-state to lower unbound potential surfaces; and hence, to guide dynamical calculations using time-dependent wavepackets. It is concluded that although there is a minor contribution from the C̃→ Ã decay route, the major route follows C̃→ (1)A2 → Ã. This is mediated through two regions of near degeneracy of the elusive (1)A2 surface with C̃ for short bonds ca. 0.8 Å; and between (1)A2 and Ã with long bonds ≥2 Å, thereby bridging the vertical energy gap. The striking population alternation for the D+OH(X) products is attributed to dynamic symmetry breaking on the (1)A2 surface.

Abstract:The infrared absorption spectrum in the OH stretching region of (H 2 O) 19 clusters formed in a supersonic molecular beam is reported. It was obtained with mass-spectrometric detection and is compared with a similarly obtained spectrum of (H 2 O) 6 and a large-cluster spectrum obtained with bolometric detection. The mass-resolved spectra show a broad absorption band between ≈ 3200 and 3600 cm −1 , reminiscent of the H-bonding feature in acondensed phase spectrum. The spectrum via the bolometer is peaked to the blue of this region, suggesting that the level of H-bondingis much lower. Mass resolution is clearly advantageous in selectively obtaining spectra of large clusters, free of interferencefrom smaller ones.

Abstract:To study the effect of large blood vessels on the temperature field in invasive microwave ablation, a finite element method was applied based on the convective-type boundary condition on the interface between tissues and blood flow. Whether a large blood vessel is outside of or involved in the lesion area will affect the 54°C effective therapeutic area in different critical conditions. This paper drew the function diagraph on the distance between blood vessel and antenna with the diameter of the blood vessel and put forward the concept of effective therapy radius. It can be used to study the influence of large vessels on the external boundary of the coagulation area and can be used as a theoretical basis to help to decide whether to occlude the large vessels before microwave ablation therapy.
Intermolecular Bending States and Tunneling Splittings of Water Trimer from Rigorous 9D Quantum Calculations: I. Methodology, Energy Levels, and Low-Frequency Spectrum

Abstract:We present the computational methodology that enables the first rigorous nine-dimensional (9D) quantum calculations of the intermolecular bending states of the water trimer, as well as its low-frequency spectrum for direct comparison with experiment. The water monomers, treated as rigid, have their centers of mass (cm's) at the corners of an equilateral triangle, and the intermonomer cm-to-cm distance is set to a value slightly larger than that in the equilibrium geometry of the trimer. The remaining nine strongly coupled large-amplitude bending (angular) degrees of freedom (DOFs) enter the 9D bend Hamiltonian of the three coupled 3D rigid-water hindered rotors. Its 9D eigenstates encompass excited librational vibrations of the trimer, as well as their torsional and bifurcation tunneling splittings which have been the subject of much interest. For this reason, the calculation of these eigenstates by diagonalizing the 9D bend Hamiltonian represents the most rigorous high-dimensional quantum treatment to date of the intermolecular vibrational states of the water trimer and its excited-state tunneling splittings. Such calculations are extremely demanding, and a sophisticated computational scheme is developed that exploits the molecular symmetry group of the water trimer, G48, in order to make them feasible in a reasonable amount of time. The spectrum of the low-frequency vibrations of the water trimer simulated using the eigenstates of the 9D bend Hamiltonian agrees remarkably well with the experimentally observed far-infrared (FIR) spectrum of the trimer in helium nanodroplets over the entire frequency range of the measurements from 70 to 620 cm−1. This shows that most peaks in the experimental FIR spectrum are associated with the intermolecular bending vibrations of the trimer. Moreover, the ground-state torsional tunneling splittings from the present 9D calculations are in excellent agreement with the spectroscopic data. These results demonstrate the high quality of the ab initio 2+3-body PES employed for the DOFs included in the bound-state calculations.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy was used to obtain the OH and OD stretch spectra of the imaginary part of the nonlinear susceptibility, Im chi((2))(s) (omega(IR)), for H2O/vapor, D2O/vapor, and 2:1 H2O-D2O/vapor interfaces that explicitly characterize their resonances. They all exhibit a positive and a negative resonance band in the bonded-OH region, clearly different from those deduced from fitting of the vertical bar chi((2))(s) (omega(IR))vertical bar(2) spectra, and from MD simulations. The broad continuum is characteristic of inhomogeneously broadened resonances associated with interfacial water species of various hydrogen-bonding geometries and strengths. Nonlinear Rotational Spectroscopy Reveals Many-Body Interactions in Water Molecules

Abstract:Because of their central importance in chemistry and biology, water molecules have been the subject of decades of intense spectroscopic investigations. Rotational spectroscopy of water vapor has yielded detailed information about the structure and dynamics of isolated water molecules, as well as water dimers and clusters. Nonlinear rotational spectroscopy in the terahertz regime has been developed recently to investigate the rotational dynamics of linear and symmetric-top molecules whose rotational energy levels are regularly spaced. However, it has not been applied to water or other lower-symmetry molecules with irregularly spaced levels. We report the use of recently developed two-dimensional (2D) terahertz rotational spectroscopy to observe high-order rotational coherences and correlations between rotational transitions that were previously unobservable. The results include two quantum (2Q) peaks at frequencies that are shifted slightly from the sums of distinct rotational transitions on two different molecules. These results directly reveal the presence of previously unseen metastable water complexes with lifetimes of 100 ps or longer. Several such peaks observed at distinct 2Q frequencies indicate that the complexes have multiple preferred bimolecular geometries. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of rotational correlations measured in 2D terahertz spectroscopy to molecular interactions and complexation in the gas phase.
Rotation of Water Molecules in Carbon Disulfide Solution

Abstract:The absorption spectrum of water dissolved in carbon disulfide is investigated for the combination bands whose centers for the vapor lie at 1.135, 1.379 and 1.875μ by means of a recording quartz spectrograph with a slit width adjusted to 0.003μ, and for the band lying in the 3μ region by means of a Hilger rocksalt spectrometer with a slit width adjusted to 0.04μ. Percent transmission curves for the combination bands show vapor-like absorption the minima of which fall in the position of vapor minima analyzed by Mecke into P and Q branches. If a correlation is made between the bands of the solution and vapor on the basis of the absence of a vapor-to-solution shift, then for each band the P branch is strong, the Q branch is weak and the R branch is absent. If the correlation is made so that bands in the solution are regarded as shifted toward longer wave-lengths, it is found that (1) the branches of any one band are shifted by the same amount on a wave number scale, (2) that the shift varies from band to band (the shifts lie between 76 and 156 cm-1), and (3) that Q branches are strongest, R branches are weak, and in every case the P branch is absent. Under either correlation the structure in each band indicates that the molecule in the solution is freely rotating. Reasons for expecting it to do so are discussed. In the 3μ region a doublet is found in the solution of components at 2.80 and 2.65μ, the center of which coincides with a shoulder in the liquid absorption band.
