The previously unobserved acceptor symmetric O-D stretch fundamental vibration is detected, with Ka = 0 <-- 0 and 1 <-- 0 sub-bands at about 2669 and 2674 cm-1, respectively. Analysis indicates that the various water dimer tunneling splittings generally decrease in the excited vibrational state, similar to the three other previously observed O-D stretch fundamentals. Two new (D2O)2 combination bands are observed, giving information on intermolecular vibrations in the excited O-D stretch states. The likely vibrational assignments for these and a previously observed combination band are discussed.

Abstract:The OH radical has remarkable features in aqueous environments. Studies of vibrational properties can uncover more information about this omnipresent radical. However, infrared spectra of the OH radical in water represent a challenging task. This work studies the OH⋆ stretching vibration from the gas phase for OH⋆‐wn (w = water, n = 0–5) clusters to the bulk phase for OH⋆‐w31 via ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations with B3LYP‐D3 and the maximally localized Wannier function scheme. The infrared spectrum of pure liquid water reveals from an AIMD simulation with 32 water molecules a characteristic bulk phase. The OH⋆ stretching vibration is continuously red‐shifted from the gas phase to liquid water. This fact is supported by static DFT and RI‐MP2 calculations. A comparison of Wannier and radical Voronoi tessellation spectra leads to the same result for all clusters, which implies the absence of delocalized electrons. Despite the use of van der Waals radii, the Voronoi approach is able to distinguish between strong and weak hydrogen bonds, emphasizing the flexibility of this approach toward different hydrogen bond types. The stretching vibration of the OH⋆ in the gas phase appears as a doublet due to the coupling of rotation and stretching. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the OH stretching vibration trend from the gas phase up to liquid water. A continuous decreasing red‐shift is shown. Wannier and Voronoi approaches reveal the absence of delocalized electrons. The partitioning via van der Waals radii in the Voronoi approach, has the flexibilty to distinguish strong and weak hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:The infrared absorption spectrum of the protonated water dimer (H5O2+) is simulated in full dimensionality (15D) in the spectral range 0-4000 cm-1. The calculations are performed using the Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method for propagation of wavepackets. All the fundamentals and several overtones of the vibrational motion are computed. The spectrum of H5O2+ is shaped to a large extent by couplings of the proton-transfer motion to large amplitude fluxional motions of the water molecules, water bending and water-water stretch motions. These couplings are identified and discussed, and the corresponding spectral lines assigned. The large couplings featured by H5O2+ do not hinder, however, to describe the coupled vibrational motion by well defined simple types of vibration (stretching, bending, etc.) based on well defined modes of vibration, in terms of which the spectral lines are assigned. Comparison of our results to recent experiments and calculations on the system is given. The reported MCTDH IR-spectrum is in very good agreement to the recently measured spectrum by Hammer et al. [JCP, 122, 244301, (2005)].

Abstract:We present a conceptually simple model for understanding the significant spectral changes that occur with the temperature in the infrared spectra of hydrogen-bound complexes. We have measured room-temperature spectra of the methanol dimer and two deuterated isotopologues in the OH(D)-stretching region. We correctly predict spectral changes observed in the gas phase for the bound OH stretch in the methanol dimer from jet-cooled to room temperature and corroborate this with experimental and theoretical results for deuterated isotopologues. The origin of the observed spectral features is explained based on a reduced-dimensional vibrational model, which includes the two high-frequency OH stretches, the two methyl torsions, and the six intermolecular low-frequency vibrations. Key to the success of the model is a new coordinate definition to describe the intrinsic large-amplitude curvilinear motion of low-frequency vibrations. Despite the deceivingly simple appearance of the room temperature bound OH-stretching fundamental band, it consists of ∼10<sup>7</sup> vibrational transitions.

Abstract:Water trimer, as the smallest water cluster in which the three-body interactions can manifest, is arguably the most important hydrogen-bonded trimer. We present the methodology that for the first time allows rigorous twelve-dimensional (12D) quantum calculation of its intermolecular vibration-tunneling eigenstates, with the monomers treated as rigid. These 12D eigenstates are used to simulate the low-frequency absorption spectrum of the trimer, for direct comparison with the measured far-infrared (FIR) spectrum of water trimer in helium nanodroplets. The 12D calculations reveal weak coupling between the large-amplitude torsional and intermolecular stretching vibrations. The calculated torsional tunneling splittings are in excellent agreement with spectroscopic results. There are visible differences between the spectrum simulated using the 12D eigenstates and that based on our earlier 9D calculations where the stretching vibrations are not included. The peaks in the 12D spectrum are generally shifted to slightly lower energies relative to those in the 9D spectrum, as well as the measured FIR spectrum, and are often split by intermolecular stretch-bend Fermi resonances.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy was used to obtain the OH and OD stretch spectra of the imaginary part of the nonlinear susceptibility, Im chi((2))(s) (omega(IR)), for H2O/vapor, D2O/vapor, and 2:1 H2O-D2O/vapor interfaces that explicitly characterize their resonances. They all exhibit a positive and a negative resonance band in the bonded-OH region, clearly different from those deduced from fitting of the vertical bar chi((2))(s) (omega(IR))vertical bar(2) spectra, and from MD simulations. The broad continuum is characteristic of inhomogeneously broadened resonances associated with interfacial water species of various hydrogen-bonding geometries and strengths. Abstract:Spectra of water-CO2 dimers are studied using a tunable mid-infrared source to probe a pulsed slit jet supersonic expansion. H2O-CO2 and D2O-CO2 are observed in the CO2 nu3 fundamental region (~2350 cm-1), D2O-CO2 is also observed in the D2O nu3 fundamental region (~2790 cm-1), and HDO-CO2 is observed in the HDO O-D stretch fundamental region (~2720 cm-1), all for the first time in these regions. Analysis of the spectra yields excited state rotational parameters and vibrational shifts. They also yield the first experimental values of the ground state internal rotation tunneling splittings for D2O-CO2 (0.003 cm-1) and HDO-CO2 (0.0234 cm-1). The latter value is a direct determination made possible by the reduced symmetry of HDO-CO2. These results provide stringent and easily interpreted tests for theoretical water - CO2 potential energy surface calculations.

Abstract:In this work, from the discussion on water structure and clusters, it can be deduced that the OH stretching vibration is closely related to local hydrogen-bonded network for a water molecule, and different OH vibrations can be assigned to OH groups engaged in various hydrogen bonding. At ambient condition, the main local hydrogen bonding for a molecule can be classified as DDAA (double donor–double acceptor), DDA (double donor–single acceptor), DAA (single donor–double acceptor) and DA (single donor–single acceptor) and free OH vibrations. As for water at 290K and 0.1MPa pressure, the OH stretching region of the Raman spectrum can be deconvoluted into five sub-bands, which are located at 3014, 3226, 3432, 3572, and 3636cm−1, and can be assigned to νDAA-OH, νDDAA-OH, νDA-OH, νDDA-OH, and free OH2 symmetric stretching vibrations, respectively.

Abstract:Eight patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (6 patients with mycosis fungoides, 1 patient with Sézary's syndrome, 1 patient with low-grade malignant lymphoma, unclassified) were treated with TP-5, a synthetic pentapeptide having the same biologic activity as the thymic hormone thymopoietin. TP-5 was administered three times weekly at a dosage of 50 mg subcutaneously in 6 patients, 50 mg intravenously in 1 patient, and 100 mg subcutaneously in 1 patient. Clinical evaluation at the end of the trial disclosed improvement in 4 patients (2 patients with mycosis fungoides, 1 patient with Sézary's syndrome, 1 patient with low-grade malignant lymphoma, unclassified), deterioration in 3 patients with mycosis fungoides and no change in 1 patient with mycosis fungoides. As TP-5 evidently exerts some effect on cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, further investigations of its therapeutic potential in this group of diseases seem worthwhile.

Abstract:Using phase-sensitive sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy with a carefully chosen phase reference, we revisited the vibrational spectra of vapor/water interfaces of neat H2O and D2O as well as HDO in diluted isotopic mixtures. Using z-cut quartz as the phase reference, with proper frequency scaling, the gross features of the OH and OD stretching spectra from H2O and D2O and from HDO in two isotopic mixtures look similar and agree with those reported earlier, but differences are also apparent. In particular, a weak positive band at low frequencies, which has been asserted by molecular dynamic simulations but not detectable in the experimental OH spectrum with pure H2O, is now visible in the OD spectrum. The differences must arise from the change of intermolecular interaction of water molecules with their surrounding molecules upon exchange of the isotopes.
The strength of the OH-bend/OH-stretch Fermi resonance in small water clusters

Abstract:A novel Raman jet-spectrometer is used to study the Fermi resonance between the OH bending overtone and OH stretching fundamental in small cyclic water clusters (H 2 O) n with n = 3, 4, 5. The new setup features a recirculating vacuum system which reduces the gas consumption by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude and enables long-term measurements of very weak Raman signals. Raman spectra measured from highly diluted expansions with unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio are presented and cluster-specific intensity ratios and effective coupling constants are derived using Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo methods, yielding a high probability for an almost "perfect" resonance for the tetramer and pentamer, i.e. a close frequency match of bend overtone and stretch fundamental with intensity ratios close to 1, but a larger coupling constant for the trimer, with best estimates close to W 5 ≲ 50 cm −1 < W 4 ≲ 60 cm −1 < W 3 ≈ 65 cm −1 .

Full-dimensional Quantum Studies of Vibrational Energy Transfer Dynamics Between H2O and Ar: Theory Assessing Experiment.

Abstract:We report the first full-dimensional quantum mechanical calculations of the ro-vibrational inelastic scattering dynamics between water molecules and argon atoms on an accurate potential energy surface, using a recently developed time-independent quantum method based on the close-coupling approach. The state-to-state integral cross-sections and rate coefficients show strong observance of gap laws. The calculated thermal rate coefficients for the relaxation of the stretching fundamental states of H2O are in good agreement with experimental values, while those for the bending overtone state are approximately five times smaller than the values extracted through a previous kinetic modeling of fluorescence decay data. Our state-specific quantum scattering results suggest the need to reassess the kinetic modeling of the experimental data. This work advanced our understanding of the quantum dynamics of vibrationally inelastic energy transfer processes involving polyatomic molecules.

Abstract:Terahertz VRT laser spectra of four (H2O)2 intermolecular vibrations consisting of 362 transitions have been measured between 87 and 108 cm−1 with ca. 2 MHz precision. The results differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from the predictions of dimer potentials tested. The spectra also reveal an ordering of the intermolecular vibrations which differs dramatically from that predicted by normal mode analysis. Strong coupling is indicated between the low barrier tunneling motions and the intermolecular vibrations as well as among different vibrations. In particular the 102.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 vibration assigned as the acceptor wag (ν8) exhibits two types of perturbations. In one of these a component of Ka=1 coupling with a tunneling component of Ka=0 in the 108 cm−1 acceptor twist (ν11) vibration. There is also an indication that the 103.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 band assigned as the donor in-plane bend (ν6) is coupled to the acceptor wag resulting in a lower of the in-plane bend frequency and a higher acceptor wag frequency. Detailed analysis of the VRT levels confirms the extreme nonrigidity of this complex, indicating that the use of approximate models with reduced dimensionality to calculate its properties are likely to fail.
Vibronically induced decay paths from the C̃1B1-state of water and its isotopomers

Abstract:The photochemistry of the water molecule has revealed a wealth of quantum phenomena, which arise from the involvement of several coupled electronic states with very different potential energy surfaces. Most recently, dissociation from single rotational levels of its C̃(1)B1 state near 124 nm has been attributed to a vibronically coupled decay via the lower Ã-state surface, despite a large vertical energy gap of 2.8 eV. Similar conclusions have been reached for subsequent experimental data for D2O. The present paper presents further experimental data for HOD and for both the H+OD(X) and D+OH(X) products. Unlike the cases for H2O and D2O, the vibrational populations for hydroxyl products do not follow a smooth distribution with v(OH∕OD). In particular, for OH there is a clear alternation in population for all the strong peaks, with odd v favoured over even v. These experimental data are analysed using new MRCI+Q calculations, which have been used to generate potential surfaces and associated non-adiabatic matrix elements for transition from the adiabatic C̃-state to lower unbound potential surfaces; and hence, to guide dynamical calculations using time-dependent wavepackets. It is concluded that although there is a minor contribution from the C̃→ Ã decay route, the major route follows C̃→ (1)A2 → Ã. This is mediated through two regions of near degeneracy of the elusive (1)A2 surface with C̃ for short bonds ca. 0.8 Å; and between (1)A2 and Ã with long bonds ≥2 Å, thereby bridging the vertical energy gap. The striking population alternation for the D+OH(X) products is attributed to dynamic symmetry breaking on the (1)A2 surface.

Abstract:To study the effect of large blood vessels on the temperature field in invasive microwave ablation, a finite element method was applied based on the convective-type boundary condition on the interface between tissues and blood flow. Whether a large blood vessel is outside of or involved in the lesion area will affect the 54°C effective therapeutic area in different critical conditions. This paper drew the function diagraph on the distance between blood vessel and antenna with the diameter of the blood vessel and put forward the concept of effective therapy radius. It can be used to study the influence of large vessels on the external boundary of the coagulation area and can be used as a theoretical basis to help to decide whether to occlude the large vessels before microwave ablation therapy.
Intermolecular Bending States and Tunneling Splittings of Water Trimer from Rigorous 9D Quantum Calculations: I. Methodology, Energy Levels, and Low-Frequency Spectrum

Abstract:We present the computational methodology that enables the first rigorous nine-dimensional (9D) quantum calculations of the intermolecular bending states of the water trimer, as well as its low-frequency spectrum for direct comparison with experiment. The water monomers, treated as rigid, have their centers of mass (cm's) at the corners of an equilateral triangle, and the intermonomer cm-to-cm distance is set to a value slightly larger than that in the equilibrium geometry of the trimer. The remaining nine strongly coupled large-amplitude bending (angular) degrees of freedom (DOFs) enter the 9D bend Hamiltonian of the three coupled 3D rigid-water hindered rotors. Its 9D eigenstates encompass excited librational vibrations of the trimer, as well as their torsional and bifurcation tunneling splittings which have been the subject of much interest. For this reason, the calculation of these eigenstates by diagonalizing the 9D bend Hamiltonian represents the most rigorous high-dimensional quantum treatment to date of the intermolecular vibrational states of the water trimer and its excited-state tunneling splittings. Such calculations are extremely demanding, and a sophisticated computational scheme is developed that exploits the molecular symmetry group of the water trimer, G48, in order to make them feasible in a reasonable amount of time. The spectrum of the low-frequency vibrations of the water trimer simulated using the eigenstates of the 9D bend Hamiltonian agrees remarkably well with the experimentally observed far-infrared (FIR) spectrum of the trimer in helium nanodroplets over the entire frequency range of the measurements from 70 to 620 cm−1. This shows that most peaks in the experimental FIR spectrum are associated with the intermolecular bending vibrations of the trimer. Moreover, the ground-state torsional tunneling splittings from the present 9D calculations are in excellent agreement with the spectroscopic data. These results demonstrate the high quality of the ab initio 2+3-body PES employed for the DOFs included in the bound-state calculations.

The origins of intra- and inter-molecular vibrational couplings: A case study of H2O-Ar on full and reduced-dimensional potential energy surface

Abstract:The origin and strength of intra- and inter-molecular vibrational coupling is difficult to probe by direct experimental observations. However, explicitly including or not including some specific intramolecular vibrational modes to study intermolecular interaction provides a precise theoretical way to examine the effects of anharmonic coupling between modes. In this work, a full-dimension intra- and inter-molecular ab initio potential energy surface (PES) for H2O-Ar, which explicitly incorporates interdependence on the intramolecular (Q1, Q2, Q3) normal-mode coordinates of the H2O monomer, has been calculated. In addition, four analytic vibrational-quantum-state-specific PESs are obtained by least-squares fitting vibrationally averaged interaction energies for the (v1, v2, v3) = (0, 0, 0), (0, 0, 1), (1, 0, 0), (0, 1, 0) states of H2O to the three-dimensional Morse/long-range potential function. Each vibrationally averaged PES fitted to 442 points has root-mean-square (rms) deviation smaller than 0.15 cm(-1), and required only 58 parameters. With the 3D PESs of H2O-Ar dimer system, we employed the combined radial discrete variable representation/angular finite basis representation method and Lanczos algorithm to calculate rovibrational energy levels. This showed that the resulting vibrationally averaged PESs provide good representations of the experimental infrared data, with rms discrepancies smaller than 0.02 cm(-1) for all three rotational branches of the asymmetric stretch fundamental transitions. The infrared band origin shifts associated with three fundamental bands of H2O in H2O-Ar complex are predicted for the first time and are found to be in good agreement with the (extrapolated) experimental values. Upon introduction of additional intramolecular degrees of freedom into the intermolecular potential energy surface, there is clear spectroscopic evidence of intra- and intermolecular vibrational couplings.
Quantum mechanical deconstruction of vibrational energy transfer rate and pathways modified by collective vibrational strong coupling

Abstract:Recent experiments have demonstrated that vibrational strong coupling (VSC) between molecular vibrations and the optical cavity field can modify vibrational energy transfer (VET) processes in molecular systems. However, the underlying mechanisms and the behavior of individual molecules under collective VSC remain largely incomplete. In this work, we combine state-of-the-art quantum vibrational spectral calculation, quantum wavepacket dynamics simulations, and ab initio machine-learning potential to elucidate how the vibrational dynamics of water OH stretches can be altered by VSC. Taking the (H$_2$O)$_{21}$-cavity system as an example, we show that the collective VSC breaks the localization picture, promotes the delocalization of OH stretches, and opens new intermolecular vibrational energy pathways involving both neighboring and remote water molecules. The manipulation of the VET process relies on the alignment of the transition dipole moment orientations of the corresponding vibrational states. The emergence of new energy transfer pathways is found to be attributed to cavity-induced vibrational resonance involving OH stretches across different water molecules, along with alterations in mode coupling patterns. Our fully quantum theoretical calculations not only confirm and extend previous findings on cavity-modified energy transfer processes but also provide new insights in energy transfer processes under collective VSC.
