Abstract:Spectra of mixed H/D water dimers are studied in the mid-infrared region of the O-D stretch fundamental (2630-2800 cm-1) using a pulsed supersonic slit jet and a tunable optical parametric oscillator infrared source. Over 30 bands, belonging to nine of the ten possible isotopologues (only H2O-HOD is missed), are observed and analyzed. The implications for excited state tunneling splittings, lifetime effects, and vibrational shifts are discussed. These are the first significant new experimental results on (gas phase) mixed water dimers in over 25 years, and they are valuable for testing water dimer theoretical calculations, a field which continues to be of lively current interest.

Abstract:The infrared absorption spectrum in the OH stretching region of (H 2 O) 19 clusters formed in a supersonic molecular beam is reported. It was obtained with mass-spectrometric detection and is compared with a similarly obtained spectrum of (H 2 O) 6 and a large-cluster spectrum obtained with bolometric detection. The mass-resolved spectra show a broad absorption band between ≈ 3200 and 3600 cm −1 , reminiscent of the H-bonding feature in acondensed phase spectrum. The spectrum via the bolometer is peaked to the blue of this region, suggesting that the level of H-bondingis much lower. Mass resolution is clearly advantageous in selectively obtaining spectra of large clusters, free of interferencefrom smaller ones.

Abstract:Water clusters formed in a molecular beam are predissociated by tunable, pulsed, infrared radiation in the frequency range 2900–3750 cm−1. Absorption spectra of the clusters are obtained by detecting the recoiling fragments off-axis from the molecular beam as a function of laser frequency using a rotatable mass spectrometer. By carefully adjusting the expansion conditions of the molecular beam and monitoring the largest cluster observable, excessive contamination by clusters larger than the specific one of interest is avoided. It is found that the spectra of clusters containing three or more water molecules absorb over the same frequency range as the liquid. Dynamical information on the predissociation process is obtained from the measured angular and velocity distributions of the fragments. An upper limit to the excited vibrational state lifetime of ∼1 μs is observed for the results reported here. The most probable dissociation process concentrates the available excess energy into the internal motions of the fragment molecules. From adiabatic dissociation trajectories and Monte Carlo simulations it is seen that the strong coupling present in the water polymers causes extensive energy sharing among the intermolecular motions in the polymer before dissociation, consistent with the experimentally measured energy distributions. Comparison between current intermolecular potentials describing liquid water and the observed frequencies is made in the normal mode approximation. The inability of any potential to predict the gross spectral features (the number of bands and their observed frequency shift from the gas phase monomer) suggests that substantial improvement in the potential energy functions is possible, but that more accurate methods of solving the vibrational wave equation are necessary before a proper explanation of the spectral fine structure is possible.

Abstract:The low-lying isomers of cationic water cluster (HO) have been globally explored by using particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Compared with previous results, our searching method covers a wide range of structural isomers of (HO) and therefore turns out to be more effective. With these local minima, geometry optimization and vibrational analysis are performed for the most interesting clusters at second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)/aug-cc-pVDZ level, and their energies are further refined at MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ and coupled-cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The interaction energies using the complete basis set limits at MP2 level are also reported. The relationships between their structure arrangement and their energies are discussed. Based on the results of thermal simulation, structural change from a four-numbered ring to a tree-like structure occurs at T ≈ 45 K, and the relative population of six lowest-free-energy isomers is found to exceed 4% at some point within the studied temperature range. Studies reveal that, among these six isomers, two new-found isomers constitute 10% of isomer population at 180 K, and the experimental spectra can be better explained with inclusions of the two isomers. The molecular orbitals for six representative cationic water clusters are also studied. Through topological and reduced density gradient analysis, we investigated the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these water cluster radical cations.

Abstract:Terahertz VRT laser spectra of four (H2O)2 intermolecular vibrations consisting of 362 transitions have been measured between 87 and 108 cm−1 with ca. 2 MHz precision. The results differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from the predictions of dimer potentials tested. The spectra also reveal an ordering of the intermolecular vibrations which differs dramatically from that predicted by normal mode analysis. Strong coupling is indicated between the low barrier tunneling motions and the intermolecular vibrations as well as among different vibrations. In particular the 102.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 vibration assigned as the acceptor wag (ν8) exhibits two types of perturbations. In one of these a component of Ka=1 coupling with a tunneling component of Ka=0 in the 108 cm−1 acceptor twist (ν11) vibration. There is also an indication that the 103.1 cm−1 (H2O)2 band assigned as the donor in-plane bend (ν6) is coupled to the acceptor wag resulting in a lower of the in-plane bend frequency and a higher acceptor wag frequency. Detailed analysis of the VRT levels confirms the extreme nonrigidity of this complex, indicating that the use of approximate models with reduced dimensionality to calculate its properties are likely to fail.

Abstract:We have obtained high-resolution (∼1.5 cm−1) photoionization spectra of supersonically cooled (Trot∼50 K) H2O and D2O in the 1000–900 Å range. The light source, which used the technique of frequency tripling in a pulsed free jet of gas, is described briefly. Spectra are rotationally resolved. Vibrationally excited autoionizing Rydberg series converging to the ground electronic [X̃; (1b1)−1] state of the molecular ion are detected. This may well be the first example of a highly resolved Rydberg spectrum of a stable polyatomic molecule. From the convergence limit, the ionization potential H2O is determined to be 101 777±7 cm−1. Intensities of the Rydberg state autoionization signals are smaller than predicted with known Franck–Condon factors, indicating that predissociation is a competitive decay channel. Rydberg state lifetimes are ∼1 ps, deduced from homogeneous linewidths. Autoionizing features from Rydberg states associated with the ion’s quasilinear Ã (3a1)−1 state are observed with linewidths above 10 cm−1, indicating that their lifetimes are less than ∼0.5 ps. Rotational assignments of some of the bands in this linear←bent transition show that the Rydberg and ionic state geometries are nearly identical. A consistent assignment of the controversial bending (v2) quantum number and Rydberg series quantum defect δ=−0.037 have been provided.

Abstract:Spectra of water-CO2 dimers are studied using a tunable mid-infrared source to probe a pulsed slit jet supersonic expansion. H2O-CO2 and D2O-CO2 are observed in the CO2 nu3 fundamental region (~2350 cm-1), D2O-CO2 is also observed in the D2O nu3 fundamental region (~2790 cm-1), and HDO-CO2 is observed in the HDO O-D stretch fundamental region (~2720 cm-1), all for the first time in these regions. Analysis of the spectra yields excited state rotational parameters and vibrational shifts. They also yield the first experimental values of the ground state internal rotation tunneling splittings for D2O-CO2 (0.003 cm-1) and HDO-CO2 (0.0234 cm-1). The latter value is a direct determination made possible by the reduced symmetry of HDO-CO2. These results provide stringent and easily interpreted tests for theoretical water - CO2 potential energy surface calculations.

Abstract:The infrared absorption spectrum of the protonated water dimer (H5O2+) is simulated in full dimensionality (15D) in the spectral range 0-4000 cm-1. The calculations are performed using the Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method for propagation of wavepackets. All the fundamentals and several overtones of the vibrational motion are computed. The spectrum of H5O2+ is shaped to a large extent by couplings of the proton-transfer motion to large amplitude fluxional motions of the water molecules, water bending and water-water stretch motions. These couplings are identified and discussed, and the corresponding spectral lines assigned. The large couplings featured by H5O2+ do not hinder, however, to describe the coupled vibrational motion by well defined simple types of vibration (stretching, bending, etc.) based on well defined modes of vibration, in terms of which the spectral lines are assigned. Comparison of our results to recent experiments and calculations on the system is given. The reported MCTDH IR-spectrum is in very good agreement to the recently measured spectrum by Hammer et al. [JCP, 122, 244301, (2005)].

Abstract:The low solubility of solute molecules in a nonpolar solvent and the weak interactions between solute and solvent molecules can be utilized to study isolated solute molecules. The in-situ inclusion process of H 2 O and D 2 O in CCl 4 was observed by infrared absorption spectroscopy. These in-situ spectra showed deviations from the monomer spectrum over time attributed to the formation of water dimers. The water dimer spectrum was extracted by subtraction between the time-series spectra. DFT calculations allowed the assignment of the four vibrational modes in the dimer spectrum. The most notable changes from the monomer to the dimer spectra were in the donor molecule, which showed a peak redshift and a large increase in the absorption strengths, especially for the donor OH (OD) bond which participates in the hydrogen bonding to the acceptor water molecule. Using free energy calculations, the equilibrium constants of H 2 O and D 2 O dimers dissolved in CCl 4 were determined to be 0.013 and 0.015, respectively, and the concentrations were determined to be ~1 μ M. The intensity ratio between the v3 mode of the water monomer and the vBD mode of the dimer calculated through DFT was found to be in close agreement with the ratios from the monomer and dimer spectra. In contrast, when the solvent was chloroform, the increase of the vBD mode of the dimer from the experiment did not agree with that from the calculations, indicating that the specific interaction of the water molecules with chloroform should be considered.

Abstract:Two setups based on CW cavity ring-down spectroscopy were used at Bruxelles and Rennes to record jet-cooled water dimer absorption between 7188 and 7285, and between 7357 and 7386 cm(-1). Some 19 absorption features are reported, significantly more than in the literature. Limited high-resolution information is available due to strong overlap between neighboring vibration-rotation-tunneling (VRT) structures and to spectral broadening induced by short upper state vibrational predissociation lifetimes, likely to range between 100 and 20 ps. Rotational band contours analyses are performed to assign the partly resolved VRT structures to the v1v2v3,vfvb = 000,11; 200,00; 000,20; and 101,00 zero-order vibrational states. Their wavenumbers are found to be 7192.34, 7225.86, 7240.57, and 7256.99 cm(-1), respectively. Both so-called acceptor-switching tunneling components are involved in the assignments whose tentative character is discussed.
Disentangling the Complex Vibrational Spectrum of the Protonated Water Trimer, H+(H2O)3, with Two-Color IR-IR Photodissociation of the Bare Ion and Anharmonic VSCF/VCI Theory

Abstract:Vibrational spectroscopy of the protonated water trimer provides a stringent constraint on the details of the potential energy surface (PES) and vibrational dynamics governing excess proton motion far from equilibrium. Here we report the linear spectrum of the cold, bare H+(H2O)3 ion using a two-color, IR-IR photofragmentation technique and follow the evolution of the bands with increasing ion trap temperature. The key low-energy features are insensitive to both D2 tagging and internal energy. The D2-tagged D+(D2O)3 spectrum is reported for the first time, and the isotope dependence of the band pattern is surprisingly complex. These spectra are reproduced by large-scale vibrational configuration interaction calculations based on a new full-dimensional PES, which treat the anharmonic effects arising from large amplitude motion. The results indicate such extensive mode mixing in both isotopologues that one should be cautious about assigning even the strongest features to particular motions, especially for the absorptions that occur close to the intramolecular bending mode of the water molecule.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy was used to obtain the OH and OD stretch spectra of the imaginary part of the nonlinear susceptibility, Im chi((2))(s) (omega(IR)), for H2O/vapor, D2O/vapor, and 2:1 H2O-D2O/vapor interfaces that explicitly characterize their resonances. They all exhibit a positive and a negative resonance band in the bonded-OH region, clearly different from those deduced from fitting of the vertical bar chi((2))(s) (omega(IR))vertical bar(2) spectra, and from MD simulations. The broad continuum is characteristic of inhomogeneously broadened resonances associated with interfacial water species of various hydrogen-bonding geometries and strengths. Abstract:The infrared (IR) spectra of protonated water clusters encode precise information on the dynamics and structure of the hydrated proton. However, the strong anharmonic coupling and quantum effects of these elusive species remain puzzling up to the present day. Here, we report unequivocal evidence that the interplay between the proton transfer and the water wagging motions in the protonated water dimer (Zundel ion) giving rise to the characteristic doublet peak is both more complex and more sensitive to subtle energetic changes than previously thought. In particular, hitherto overlooked low-intensity satellite peaks in the experimental spectrum are now unveiled and mechanistically assigned. Our findings rely on the comparison of IR spectra obtained using two highly accurate potential energy surfaces (PESs) in conjunction with highly accurate state-resolved quantum simulations. We demonstrate that these high-accuracy simulations are important for providing definite assignments of the complex IR signals of fluxional molecules.

Abstract:Spatial separation of water dimers from water monomers and larger water clusters through the electric deflector is presented. A beam of water dimers with 93% purity and a rotational temperature of 1.5 K was obtained. Following strong-field ionization using a 35 fs laser pulse with a wavelength centered around 800 nm and a peak intensity of 1014 W/cm2, we observed proton transfer and 46% of ionized water dimers broke apart into hydronium ions H3O+ and neutral OH.

Abstract:As a key species in understanding the hydrogen-bonding network transitions between liquid water and ice, the neutral water heptamer is a challenging experimental target, owing to the richness of low-lying isomers. Here, we report the size-specific infrared spectra of confinement-free, neutral water heptamer (H2O)7 based on threshold photoionization using a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser. The complexity of the observed spectra indicates that many nearly isoenergetic isomers are present at finite temperatures. Two classes of prism- and cage-like structures are identified in a high-pressure pulsed supersonic expansion of water heptamer, in which the former is favored energetically at low temperatures and serves as a major contributor to the experimental spectrum. These findings provide key information for filling the gap between well-studied water hexamer and octamer.

Abstract:Infrared (IR) spectroscopy provides detailed structural and dynamical information on clusters at the fingerprint level. Herein, we demonstrate the capability of a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) for selective detection of a wide variety of neutral water clusters and for recording the size-dependent IR spectra. The present technique does not require the presence of an ultraviolet chromophore or a dipole moment and is generally applicable for IR spectroscopy of neutral clusters free from confinement. To show the features of our technique, we report here the IR spectra of neutral water dimer in the OH stretch region, providing benchmarks for theoretical study of the accurate description of hydrogen bonding structures involved in liquid water and ice. Quantum mechanical calculations on a 12-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface are utilized to simulate the anharmonic vibrational spectra of water dimer. These results help to resolve the controversy of the exact vibrational assignment of each band feature of the water dimer.

The previously unobserved acceptor symmetric O-D stretch fundamental vibration is detected, with Ka = 0 <-- 0 and 1 <-- 0 sub-bands at about 2669 and 2674 cm-1, respectively. Analysis indicates that the various water dimer tunneling splittings generally decrease in the excited vibrational state, similar to the three other previously observed O-D stretch fundamentals. Two new (D2O)2 combination bands are observed, giving information on intermolecular vibrations in the excited O-D stretch states. The likely vibrational assignments for these and a previously observed combination band are discussed.

Abstract:Absorption spectra of liquid water at 300 K are calculated from both classical and density functional theory molecular dynamics simulation data, which together span from 1 MHz to hundreds of THz, agreeing well with experimental data qualitativley and quantitavely over the entire range, including the IR modes, the microwave peak, and the intermediate THz bands. The spectra are decomposed into single-molecular and collective components as well as into components due to molecular reorientations and changes in induced intramolecular dipole moments. These decompositions shed new light on the motions underlying the librational and translational (hydrogen-bond stretch) bands at 20 and 5 THz respectively: interactions between donor protons and acceptor lone pair electrons are shown to be important for the line shape in both librational and translational regimes, and in- and out-of-phase librational dimer modes are observed and explored.

Abstract:Using phase-sensitive sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy with a carefully chosen phase reference, we revisited the vibrational spectra of vapor/water interfaces of neat H2O and D2O as well as HDO in diluted isotopic mixtures. Using z-cut quartz as the phase reference, with proper frequency scaling, the gross features of the OH and OD stretching spectra from H2O and D2O and from HDO in two isotopic mixtures look similar and agree with those reported earlier, but differences are also apparent. In particular, a weak positive band at low frequencies, which has been asserted by molecular dynamic simulations but not detectable in the experimental OH spectrum with pure H2O, is now visible in the OD spectrum. The differences must arise from the change of intermolecular interaction of water molecules with their surrounding molecules upon exchange of the isotopes.
