Abstract:Sulfur-doped copper-nickel bimetallic oxide (S-CuNiO) was employed as the ozonation catalyst for aniline degradation. The results demonstrated that the removal efficiencies of aniline (0.1 mmol/L) significantly increased with the S-CuNiO dosage from 0 to 1.0 g/L and the ozone dose from 0 to 96.5 mg/(min L-liquid). More than 92% of aniline was decomposed within 20 min in the initial pH range of 2-11, and the removal of total organic carbon reached 71% at initial pH 6. S-CuNiO exhibited more excellent catalytic performance than CuNiO, S-CuO and S-NiO. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance technique confirmed that •OH rather than O2•− played a dominant role in aniline degradation. Combined with characterization of the catalyst, the possible mechanism of catalytic ozonation was deduced. The −OH groups on the catalyst surface stimulated ozone to produce •OH, meanwhile ≡Cu+ and ≡Ni2+ on the surface of S-CuNiO promoted the decomposition of ozone via electron transfer to form •OH, accompanied by the production of ≡Cu2+ and ≡Ni3+. Subsequently, ≡Cu+ converted ≡Ni3+ into ≡Ni2+ and released ≡Cu2+, which was reduced to ≡Cu+ by S2− on the surface of the catalyst. Consequently, catalytic cycles were established to facilitate aniline degradation and improve its mineralization. Based on the analyses of intermediates by HPLC-TOF-MS, the possible pathways of aniline degradation were further proposed.

Abstract:Heterogeneous Fenton-like systems using H2O2 as an oxidant have been extensively investigated in acidic and neutral conditions, but usually, they become ineffective under alkaline conditions. In this study, a cuprous graphitic carbon nitride material (Cu-CN) was prepared that can generate singlet oxygen (1O2) from H2O2. The results demonstrate that at pH 11, 95 % of 50 mg/L p-chlorophenol (4-CP) can be effectively eliminated within 120 min. Through semi-quantitative analysis and density functional theory calculations, it has been confirmed that 1O2 is the dominant reactive oxygen species in this system under alkaline conditions. The main pathway for 1O2 generation involves the formation of a complex between & sdot;O2- and Cu(II)-N sites, and the subsequent intra-molecular electron transfer. To enhance the stability and separation performance of this catalyst, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was employed as a binder to combine Cu-CN with Fe3O4. The terminal hydroxyl groups in PEG were cross-liked by metals, thus forming a solid and magnetic composite (CuFe@PEG). Compared to Cu-CN, CuFe@PEG exhibited remarkable performance with 93 % retention of its original capacity for 4-CP removal at pH 11. Furthermore, after seven cycles, the degradation efficiency only decreased by 6.36 %. This study introduces a novel approach for utilizing Fenton-like reactions in treating alkaline wastewater.
A Catalytic Oxidation Approach to Coat Copper Powder with Polyaniline

Abstract:To improve the oxidation resistance of fine copper powder, a new catalytic oxidation method was used to coat copper microparticles with polyaniline. In the method, some copper on the surface of copper particles was converted into Cu2+, and with the catalysis of Cu2+ aniline was oxidized by hydrogen peroxide to form the polyaniline coating layer on copper particles. Detected by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), it is proved that the composite particles have fine core–shell structure, their core are copper particles and their shell are mainly composed of compact polyaniline. The stability of the composites was tested by Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) in nitrogen and in air. It is found that the particulate composite is more stable than copper particles in air.
Cotton Fiber-Anchored Nb Single-Site Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Anilines to Azoxybenzenes

Abstract:This work demonstrated a facile methodology to construct single Nb site catalysts with merely 0.63 wt% Nb by employing alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid-functionalized cotton fiber as green and sustainable supporting material. The as-synthesized catalysts have been characterized thoroughly and exhibited a superior catalytic activity for selective oxidation of aniline into azoxybenzene with nearly 100% utilization efficiency of H2O2 under mild and green conditions. Notably, it demonstrated the highest TOF (4806 h-1) among the currently reported hetero-geneous catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst has steadily been operated under continuous-flow conditions, which afforded significant benefits compared to batch processes as reported in these transformations. The activity test and catalyst characterization indicated that the atomically dispersed Nb-peroxo coordination centers were actually catalytic sites. Especially, the alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid groups on cotton fiber played an important role in coordinating/stabilizing single Nb site. Moreover, 1H MAS NMR spectra verified that there exists an acid-base interaction between arylamines and free alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid groups covalently grafted on cotton fiber, which was favorable for adsorption and activation of the substrates. Mechanism studies indicated that the azoxy derivatives were produced through condensation step between N-phenylhydroxylamine and nitrosobenzene rather than direct oxidation of azobenzene. The work provides an economical and environmentally friendly approach to construct single-site catalysts for the oxidation catalysis.
Conversion of aniline contaminant to valuable polyaniline polymers from wastewater under alkaline conditions

Abstract:Although the oxidation processes mediated by persulfate (PS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) attract more attention in the degradation of various recalcitrant contaminants, the high concentrations of oxidants required for the low concentrations of contaminants always limit their large-scale applications. In this work, aniline can be effectively oxidized by CuO and PS under pH-neutral and alkaline conditions. The increased observed rate constant (kobs) values with increasing pHs indicate that the oxidation of aniline is facilitated by solution OH−. Meanwhile, the low ratios between the removed PS and aniline (1.19 at pH 7.0 and 1.68 at pH 12.0) indicate the high catalytic oxidation efficacy of the CuO-PS system. The insignificant contributions of SO4−, OH, 1O2 and O2− to aniline oxidation in quenching experiments and EPR analysis suggest that PS is likely activated on the surface of CuO via the non-radical pathway. The presence of carbon-centered radicals (CCRs), as well as UV and GCMS analysis, indicates the important intermediates of PhNH2+ and PhNH radicals during the oxidation process, revealing that separate transfer of an electron from aniline to the activated PS, followed by subsequent abstraction of a H+ by OH− to form PhNH are two important steps in the oxidation process. Further coupling of PhNH radicals results in the formation of insoluble polyaniline polymers at pHs 7.0 and 12.0. The high thermal stability and ideal pseudo-capacitive properties of the insoluble products indicate that the polyaniline produced from aniline wastewater can be used for high-temperature-resistant materials or capacitors. This study provides an efficient alternative to turn aniline waste to polyaniline polymers.

Abstract:Cu/SBA-15 catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method using mesoporous siliceous SBA-15 as the support. The effects of different loadings of Cu/SBA-15 catalysts on the catalytic oxidation of NO were investigated. The physical and chemical properties of the Cu/SBA-15 catalysts were characterized by N 2 adsorption/desorption, SEM, XRD, TEM, FTIR, XPS, H 2 -TPR and O 2 -TPD. The characterization results suggested that the incorporation of copper did not disrupt the ordered hexagonal mesoporous structure of SBA-15. A lower copper loading was beneficial for increasing the dispersion of CuO x on the surface of the support, thereby improving the activity of the catalyst. At loading above 10%, the CuO x material aggregated into CuO x clusters on the SBA-15 support and changed from an amorphous phase to a crystalline phase, reducing the catalytic activity. Moreover, the lower copper loading was beneficial for improving the reduction ability and desorption of surface chemisorbed oxygen of the catalyst. The experimental results indicated that 10% Cu/SBA-15 catalysts exhibited the highest activity, nearly 90% of NO conversion efficiency.

Abstract:A new heterogeneous copper catalyst was developed using highly porous activated carbon as the catalyst support. The catalyst was designed to promote the oxidation of organic pollutants in dyeing and printing wastewater from the textile industry, which was carried out in a 2 l high-pressure reactor. The new catalyst enhanced the conversion of organic compounds in dyeing and printing wastewater, shortened the reaction time, and lowered the reaction temperature and the system total pressure. The conditions for preparing the catalyst were experimentally optimized according to their catalytic oxidation efficiency in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:An extensive series of experiments was performed to identify suitable catalysts to increase the reaction rate of wet‐air oxidation of textile wastewater at relatively mild temperatures and pressures. Wastewater types treated included natural‐fiber desizing wastewater, synthetic‐fiber desizing wastewater, and printing and dyeing wastewater. Experimental results indicated that all catalysts tested in this investigation significantly increased the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removal rates and total COD and TOC removals. Of all catalysts tested, copper salts were the most effective. Anions in the salt solutions played a role in the catalytic process. Nitrate ions were more effective than sulfate ions. Similarly, copper nitrates were more effective than copper sulfates. A mixture of salts containing different metals performed better than any single salt.

Abstract:The effect of magnesium sulfate on thrombus formation in vivo was studied by scanning electron microscopy utilizing the model of endothelial damage by temporary arterial occlusion with a Heifetz clip. Examination of arterial segments compressed by the surgical clip for 30 minutes, followed by 2 hours of reflow, revealed marked attachment of platelets and deposition of erythrocytes, with very few leukocytes, to exposed subendothelial tissues. This thrombotic deposition protruded as much as 150 mu into the vascular lumen (15% of luminal diameter). By contrast, in animals pretreated with magnesium sulfate, this deposition was limited to isolated areas of single or very few platelets with few erythrocytes or leukocytes. The difference in overall quantity of thrombus formation between nontreated and magnesium sulfate-treated groups was much less obvious after 24 hours; however, fewer leukocytes and erythrocytes were seen to be attached to the platelet carpet in the treated group as compared with the nontreated group. The effect of magnesium sulfate on the overall quantity of thrombus formation corresponded inversely to the measured levels of serum magnesium in these groups.
Kinetics of Aniline Oxidation in Supercritical Water

Abstract:Water under supercritical conditions (T>374.2℃, P>22MPa) is an attractive medium for the efficient oxidation of wastes. Oxidation of aniline in supercritical water was studied at 673.15K~948.15K , 25MPa and 300% excess oxygen in an isothermal, isobaric, tubular flow reactor. The experimental results showed that increasing the temperature and resident time could increase the aniline removal efficiency and COD removal efficiency. The aniline removal efficiency could be achieved 93% in 30 seconds at the conditions of 2.351×10-4mol·L-1 aniline, 748.15K, 25.0MPa and 300% excess oxygen. But only when the temperature is higher than 923.15K with other conditions unchanged, can the COD removal efficiency be achieved greater than 90%. In the temperature range 873.15K~898.15K, the COD removal efficiency is strongly temperature dependent. At the conditions of 673.15K~748.15K, 25.0MPa and 300% excess oxygen, the global kinetics for aniline disappearance could be described as follows: in which the reaction order respect to aniline is 1.554, the activation energy is 2.96′104J×mol-1, and the Arrhenius pre-exponential factor is 6.69×103.

Abstract:In this study a copper-loaded N-doped carbon catalyst with mesoporous hollow sphere structure characteristic (Cu–NCHS) was prepared by in-situ synthesis followed with calcination and hydrothermal etching. Its catalytic performance for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was evaluated using bisphenol A (BPA) as target pollutant. Owing to the coordination of more active sites provided by copper-loading and the mesoporous hollow structure characterized with high specific surface area (SSA) of 282.2 m2 g−1 and large pore volume of 0.831 cm3 g−1, Cu–NCHS showed significantly better catalytic performance in BPA degradation (96.8% within 120 min) than those of NCHS (16.4%) and Cu-NC (19.6%) under the same initial conditions of BPA (20 mg L−1), PMS (100 mg L−1) and catalyst dosage (50 mg L−1). The possible mechanism of PMS activation by Cu–NCHS was also explored by ESR analysis and quenching experiments, and both radical and non-radical pathways were confirmed to be involved in BPA degradation process in Cu–NCHS/PMS system. Singlet oxygen (1O2), hydroxyl radical (•OH) and sulfate radical (SO4•−) were identified to be the reactive oxygen species (ROS), of which 1O2 was the dominant ROS. Besides, the Cu–NCHS/PMS system showed excellent adaptability to pH change (from 3 to 11), common inorganic anions (Cl−, HCO3−, HPO42−, SO42−) and natural organic matter (humic acid) in water. Meanwhile, the Cu–NCHS catalyst also showed good stability (with low Cu leaching of 0.14 mg L−1) and well reusability in recycling tests (the removal rate of BPA dropped by 14.0% after four successive runs). Combined with the experimental results in actual water (river water and wastewater), we demonstrated this study might provide a new insight for developing copper-loaded catalyst with high effect toward water treatment.

Abstract:The manner of ammonia-containing wastewater in industrial production has always been an urgent issue that needs to be solved. Accordingly, a carbon-supported low-loading Ru/Cu bimetallic catalyst with high activity and hydrothermal stability was produced through facile disposal for catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO). In the preparation process, Ru and Cu ions were loaded onto micro mesoporous carbon prepared through the calcination of potassium citrate by impregnation. Various characteristic techniques were utilized to characterize their structures and morphology, and results show that the calcination temperature with micro-mesopores' characteristics could regulate the morphology of carbon. The results of catalytic experiments demonstrated that the obtained catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance in the process of CWAO. The Ru/Cu@C-700 catalyst achieved 99.6 % conversion of ammonia water at 800 ppm and 99.1 % selectivity to nitrogen at 200 °C and 2 MPa O 2 in 4 h. The ammonia nitrogen content in the treated water was less than 15 ppm, meeting the standard for direct discharge . Moreover, no apparent deactivation phenomenon was observed after five cycles, indicating that the prepared catalyst can effectively prevent the leaching of ruthenium and copper nanoparticles. The low loading (less than 1 %) of the Ru/Cu bimetallic catalyst can significantly reduce costs and can synergistically enhance conversion and selectivity, providing an effective strategy for studying the CWAO of ammonia.

Abstract:CuO@UiO-66-NH 2 was constructed using a hydrothermal method and used for the enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The results showed that under the optimal conditions, the degradation rate of BPA (6 mg/L) was 95.08%, and the leaching amount of copper ions was 0.42 mg/L. After five cycles, the degradation rate of the catalyst still exceeded 90%, indicating that the catalyst has good stability. Through quenching experiments, CuO@UiO-66-NH 2 /PMS catalytic system includes both free radical and non-free radical pathways, among which the non-free radical 1 O 2 is the main reactive oxygen species for degrading BPA. The intermediate of the reaction was identified through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS) in the experiment, and the degradation mechanism and pathway of the catalyst were proposed.

Using innovative copper-loaded activated alumina (Cu/AA) as the catalyst for catalytic wet peroxidation (CWPO) of catechol

Abstract:In this study, copper-loaded activated alumina (Cu/AA) was synthesized and used for the CWPO of catechol (a representative refractory organic pollutant). Various characterization techniques were deployed to characterize the catalysts, e.g., activated alumina (AA), as well as pristine and spent 1% Cu/AA. The innovative 1% Cu/AA catalyst exhibited good thermal stability up to 1173 K with a marginal weight loss of 13%. The Cu species were well dispersed on the activated alumina framework with no significant cluster formation. Typically, the average copper particle size of 5 nm was dispersed on the AA framework. Catechol removal was observed to be 92% with 87% mineralization at optimized conditions (initial catechol concentration = 200 mg/L, catalyst dose of 1% Cu/AA = 2 g/L; temperature = 323 K; pH = 6; and H2O2/catechol stoichiometric ratio = 0.5). The mineralization of catechol was analyzed using mass spectroscopy, with the associated mechanism has been elucidated. Results of this study indicated that synthesized catalyst has phenomenal advantages in terms of simple separation and high removal efficiency of catechol, suggesting the feasibility of employing Cu/AA as the effective catalyst for the CWPO of catechol.
Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbon derived from polypyrrole-polythiophene for efficient peroxydisulfate activation towards degradation of aniline

Abstract:To enhance the catalytic activity of carbon materials and streamline their synthesis process, it is necessary to optimize the doping of heteroatoms and reduce the dependence on organic solvents. This can be achieved by utilizing carbonized Polypyrrole-Polythiophene (C(Ppy-Pth)), which is obtained through simultaneous and in-situ co-doping of N and S. This material can serve as an effective activator of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of aniline (AN). The results showed that Ppy-Pth could be efficiently synthesized by using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, pyrrole, thiophene, FeCl3, and H2O2 in water. Based on the price, self-decomposition and oxidation efficiency, the performance of PDS activated by C(Ppy-Pth) was superior to that of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in degrading AN. The optimum conditions for catalyzing PDS and degrading 30 mg/L AN by C(Ppy-Pth) were 0.10 g/L C(Ppy-Pth)-1000-1/1, 2.10 mM PDS, and pH0 = 3.00, which resulted in 86.69% AN removal in 30 min. Carbonation temperature, N/S ratio and pyridine N content are the key factors affecting the catalytic activity of C(Ppy-Pth). Quenching, probe, and electrochemical experiment revealed that in the catalytic PDS system with C(Ppy-Pth)-1000-1/1 (pH0 = 3.00), the oxidation of AN mainly occurred through the generation of hydroxyl radical (·OH), superoxide anion (O2·-), and electron transfer on the C(Ppy-Pth)-1000-1/1 surface. The steady-state concentration of ·OH and O2·- were 2.65 × 10-14 M and 1.97 × 10-13 M, respectively, and the contribution rate of ·OH oxidation was 31.28%. The oxidation of AN by sulfate radical (SO4·-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) could be neglected. This study provides a promising strategy for the construction of PDS catalyst and wastewater treatment.

Abstract:High-salt petrochemical wastewater requires advanced treatment for water reuse due to its high salinity and the presence of refractory organic compounds. Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation is an effective advanced treatment method, with the key to its success lying in the preparation of catalysts. A novel carbon-coated copper-based core-shell catalyst (C/Cu-Al2O3) was successfully prepared. In this work, Al2O3 was used as a carrier and copper as an active component to construct a catalyst with levodopa (L-DOPA) shell and embedded copper sites through the self-polymerization of L-DOPA. The active groups in L-DOPA molecules such as amine and carboxyl groups can be introduced into catalyst and L-DOPA also served as carbon source to reduce Cu(II) to more reactive Cu(I) and Cu(0). Under optimal conditions, its chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate for high-salt petrochemical wastewater reached 62.5%. After 20 cycles, its COD removal rate was maintained at above 53%. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigations, quenching tests, and degradation experiments of oxalic acid revealed that the generation of embedded copper sites (Cu-O, Cu-N) and the construction of the carbon shell provided the catalyst with rich surface hydroxyl groups and Lewis acid sites, which promoted the decomposition of ozone into hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (•O2 -), and singlet oxygen (1O2) and achieved efficient degradation of organic compounds.

Abstract:Copper oxide/ halloysite nanotubes (CuO/HNTs) served as excellent catalysts for bisphenol A (BPA) removal were prepared through a hydrothermal method. The influences of catalyst dosage, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) concentration, pH value, initial BPA concentration, temperature, inorganic anions, and humic acid on the degradation efficiency were investigated. The degradation results indicated that the catalyst 70% CuO/HNTs (70% represented the weight ratio of CuO to HNTs) displayed an extraordinary TOC removal efficiency of 96%, which was 1.2 times higher than that of CuO. The mechanism studies suggested that the abundant hydroxyl groups of HNTs mostly contributed to the superior degradation efficiency of CuO/HNTs. The singlet oxygen (1O2) produced in the CuO/HNTs/PMS system acted as the predominant active specie in the degradation process. Moreover, the formed Cu-O-Al bond constrained the growth of CuO and improved the cycle performance of CuO/HNTs. This work provides an efficient catalyst for contaminant removal and contributes an innovative strategy for constructing functional mineral composites with abundant hydroxyl groups.

Abstract:High copper contented mesoporous Cu/SBA-15 catalysts with high copper dispersion were successfully synthesized via the simple ammonia-driving deposition-precipitation method. The physicochemical properties of these Cu/SBA-15 catalysts have been studied through various characterization methods such as BET, XRD, SEM, TEM and TPR. The catalytic activities of these catalysts were determined on the hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) to ethylene glycol (EG) under gas-phase fixed-bed conditions at high space-time yield. The results revealed that the high copper contented Cu/SBA-15 catalyst still has high specific area, proper pore volume and mesoporous structure, and the catalysts showed much high activities compared to the one prepared by impregnation method. This finding opens a new avenue for the selection of better catalyst for the hydrogenation of DMO to EG.
Enhanced Denitrification of Aniline and Its Derivatives by Catalysts, Anions, and Co-fuels during Supercritical Water Oxidation Process

Abstract:We investigated the denitrification performance of aniline and its derivatives (N-methylaniline and N, N-dimethylaniline) in supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) under varying conditions (temperature: 643-743 K, reaction time: 0.5-4 min, pressure: 24.0 MPa, oxidation coefficient: 300%). Cu2+ proved to be an efficient homogeneous catalyst, generating radicals via a Fenton-like reaction. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) outperformed methanol and ethanol as a co-fuel, enhancing TN removal due to its higher heating value. Nitrogen-containing product distribution revealed that N2 generation correlated with org-N depletion, especially with Cu2+ and IPA. A denitrification mechanism was elucidated using DFT, with Fukui indices, EHOMO, and ELUMO highlighting aniline's greater susceptibility compared to MA and DMA. Our findings provide insights into optimizing SCWO denitrification using aniline derivatives, shedding light on sustainable nitrogen removal processes.

Abstract:Conversion of aniline wastes to value-added products is always a promising method to treat aniline wastewater. In this study, a selective oxidation of aniline contaminants by Bi2·15WO6 was carried out under visible light and alkaline conditions. Kinetic results show that the oxidation rates of aniline increase with increasing pH values under visible light. UV-vis absorption spectra and GC-MS analysis confirm that azobenzene is the primary oxidation product with aminophenol and N,N'-diphenylhydrazine as the secondary products. The analyses from Mott-Schottky, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), transient photocurrent and photoluminescence (PL) further indicate that OH- promotes the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs on the surface of Bi2·15WO6, thus facilitating oxidation of aniline. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis confirm that h+ is the predominant specie in the Bi2·15WO6 system and aniline radical cation (PhNH2•+) is an important intermediate. The Hammett and ΔBDEN-H plots further reveal that e- abstraction from aniline with the formation of PhNH2•+, followed by H+ abstraction from PhNH2•+ with the formation of anilino radicals (PhNH•), is the prerequisite for the formation of N,N'-diphenylhydrazine, which is then oxidized to azobenzene via the hydrogen-abstraction pathway. This work provides a cost-effective method to selectively oxidize aniline to azobenzene.
