Abstract:Enhanced geothermal systems (EGSs) developed by hydraulic stimulation are promising for exploiting petrothermal heat by improving fluid pathways in low-permeable geothermal reservoir rocks. However, fluid injection into the subsurface can potentially cause large seismic events by reactivating pre-existing faults, which is a significant barrier to EGSs. The management of injection-induced seismicity is, therefore, essential for the success of EGSs. During the hydraulic stimulation of an EGS, fluid can be injected into a fault zone or into the rock matrix containing pre-existing faults adjacent to the injection well. The differences in hydromechanical responses between fluid injection into and adjacent to a fault have not been investigated in detail. Here, we performed triaxial fluid injection experiments involving injecting fluid directly and indirectly into a fault in granite rock samples to analyse the distinct hydromechanical responses and estimate the injection-induced seismicity in both cases. Our results suggest that in addition to directly injecting fluid into a critically stressed fault, injecting into nearly intact granite adjacent to the fault could also cause injection-induced seismic hazards owing to the high fluid pressure required to create new fractures in the granite matrix. It is, therefore, important to carefully identify pre-existing faults within tight reservoirs to avoid injecting fluid adjacent to them. Additionally, once prior unknown faults are delineated during hydraulic stimulation, appropriate shut-in strategies should be implemented immediately to mitigate seismic risks. Abstract:Abstract Using a BEM-based hydraulic fracture model and the Coulomb frictional law, the generation of slip and shear rupturing produced by fluid injection is investigated. A wide range of factors can contribute to injection-induced seismicity. In addition to injection rate, fluid viscosity and existing permeability, several other factors are considered in this paper to determine their effects on slip development during continuous fluid injection and during shut-in. These factors include dilatant strengthening, slip weakening of frictional coefficients, structural complexities along a rupturing path like jogs and branches and the application of far-field wave-form stresses. The numerical method is summarized and the theoretical formulation of the above physical processes associated with generation of seismic events is provided. The numerical results show a rich and complex local slip rate change during extension of the slip zone. Under fluid injection, the slip can first produce a seismic event either caused by rapidly increasing pressure or by abrupt slip initiation, and then slows. When the permeability is large enough, the slip pattern manifests itself as long-term slow slip period coupled with aseismic slip transients. The long-duration and low-magnitude seismic events are associated with the slipping state in the conditionally stable regime, in which fluid pressure is marginally equal to a value required to produce slip using the effective stress and the static frictional strength. A small perturbation in the fluid pressure caused by any of the above factors can stop and/or generate relatively faster slip rates. The slip continues varying with time after shut-in in the presence of the above influencing factors. The slow slip on a fault, which is difficult to detect by seismology, could be a significant process in dissipating elastic strain energy during hydraulic fracturing stimulations. In addition, the model can capture a tendency of the slip rate to become significantly large. The results demonstrate the importance of fracture and fault permeability enhancement on variations of fluid pressure and slip rates.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding the physical mechanisms which link fluid injection with triggered earthquakes is critical in minimizing hazard in subsurface fluid‐injection operations. Currently, injection‐induced changes in effective stress on faults are considered as the main criterion in triggering seismic fault slip. However, rate of change in effective stress, together with inertial effects, are also be implicated in this criterion. We present a modified critical stiffness criterion to investigate the relative likelihood of triggering earthquakes during injection for different injection rate schedules (constant‐vs‐cycled‐vs‐increasing). A stability analysis of fault stress is used to define a critical stiffness as a function of magnitudes and rate of change in effective stresses. The relative potential for triggering earthquakes due to fluid injection is investigated using a coupled fluid‐flow‐deformation model. Polarities of change in critical stiffness are employed as an index to define the tendency for a transition from aseismic to seismic reactivation. During constant rate injection and self‐equilibration stages, the absolute magnitude of effective stress controls the transition. Conversely, the rate of change in effective stress dominates this transition when injection suddenly starts or stops, and inertial effects suppress the transformation to seismic slip. Cycling injection rates into a given fault is the most stable, followed by constant injection, with linear injection the least stable for the same total volume injected. High permeability reservoirs and strike‐slip faulting regimes reduce the potential of inducing seismicity. This work provides both new insights into assessing the seismic risks associated with injection and guidance for mitigation.

Abstract:Abstract The evolution of fluid injection‐induced seismicity, generally characterized through the number of events or their seismic moment, depends on, among other factors, the injected fluid volume. Migration of seismicity is observed during those sequences and might be caused by a range of mechanisms: fluid pressure diffusion, fluid‐induced aseismic slip propagating along a stimulated fault, interactions between earthquakes. Recent theoretical and observational developments underline the important effect on seismicity migration of structural parameters, like fault criticality, or injection parameters, like flow rate or pressurization rate. Here, we analyze two well‐studied injection‐induced seismic sequences at the Soultz‐sous‐Fôret and Basel geothermal sites, and find that the evolution of the seismicity front distance primarily depends on the injected fluid volume. Based on a fracture mechanics model, we develop new equations relating seismicity migration to injected fluid volume and frictional and structural properties of the fault. We find that the propagation of a fluid‐induced aseismic slip front along the stimulated fault, triggering seismicity, explains well the observations made on the two sequences. This model allows us to constrain parameters describing the seismicity front evolution and explains the diversity of migration patterns observed in injection‐induced and natural earthquake swarms.

Abstract:During an earthquake, the elastic energy stored in the Earth is released as frictional energy and radiated energy in the form of seismic waves. The partitioning of energy released during an earthquake gives an indication of the overall size of the earthquake and its potential for damage to man-made structures. Here, we perform an energy analysis of fluid-injection-induced earthquakes using a single-degree-of-freedom spring poroslider and rate-and-state friction. We show that seismic radiation can be modeled within the single-degree-of-freedom spring-slider by adding a radiation damping term. We then use it to study fluid injection and assess its effects on the energy partitioning during induced and triggered earthquakes. We find that: (1) seismic efficiency, stress drop, and total slip are directly influenced by the rate of increase in pore pressure, (2) the ratio of elastic energy stored in the skeleton to injection energy is low and is influenced by the rate of fluid injection, (3) seismic injection efficiency is also low and is lower for induced earthquakes compared to triggered ones, and (4) fluid injection leads to bigger and potentially more damaging earthquakes overall.

Abstract:Summary Earthquakes can be triggered by fluid injection into underground formations. Fluid injection can cause large changes in the underground volume that exert stresses on nearby preexisting faults, leading to seismic activity. Assuming an increase in underground development activities in the future, our understanding of the mechanism underlying induced seismicity must be improved, and methods must be developed to properly assess the risk of seismic events. The objective of this study is to develop a seismicity prediction model that calculates the magnitude and timing of triggered earthquakes or seismic events occurring during various subsurface fluid injection activities. We developed an injection-induced seismicity analysis model that predicts the dynamic earthquake nucleation caused by changes in stress and pore pressure that occur during various subsurface activities. The governing equations consisting of the dynamic motion of the poroelastic spring-slider system, rate and state friction laws and pore pressure diffusion equation were solved using the embedded semi-implicit Runge-Kutta (SIRK) method. The dynamic sliding model was also incorporated into the finite element method (FEM) model, considering the variations in the stresses and pore pressures in the formation. A field case study was also conducted to compare the model results with typical microseismicity responses observed from hydraulic fracturing treatments in shale fields. Contrary to the popular understanding derived from Amonton’s law, the dynamic friction model revealed that a large normal stress on the fault leads to rapid sliding. A larger normal stress accumulates a large amount of elastic energy until it slips owing to fluid injection, nucleating large seismic waves. The poroelastic spring-slider model estimated reasonable microseismic magnitudes for hydraulic fracturing treatment but overestimated the time required to trigger a microseismic event under field conditions. To improve the analysis results, the poroelastic spring-slider model was coupled with a linear elastic FEM that considered the complex interplay of stress changes from hydraulic fracturing and the associated pore pressure variation in the formation. Compared with the field data, the coupled simulation model estimated a reasonable timing for the induced microseismic events when the increasing pore pressure during hydraulic fracturing penetrated deep into the formation. These findings suggest the existence of permeable natural fractures in the formation, which intensify early frictional sliding during treatment. The seismicity prediction model presented in this study simulates the magnitude and timing of seismic nucleation, helping to manage and mitigate the environmental impacts of induced seismicity during various subsurface development activities, such as oil and gas extraction, hydraulic fracturing, geothermal, and carbon dioxide sequestration. Moreover, the case study results imply that the time series of seismic events predicted by the model can be used to understand the possible fracture geometry and extent of fluid invasion for field applications. Abstract:The effect of normal stress variations on fault frictional strength has been extensively characterized in laboratory experiments and modelling studies based on a rate-and-state-dependent fault friction formalism. However, the role of pore pressure changes during injection-induced fault reactivation and associated frictional phenomena is still not well understood. We apply rate-and-state friction (RSF) theory in finite element models to investigate the effect of fluid pressurization rate on fault (re)activation and on the resulting frictional slip characteristics at the laboratory scale. We consider a stepwise injection scenario where each fluid injection cycle consists of a fluid pressurization phase followed by a constant fluid pressure phase. We first calibrate our model formulation to recently published laboratory results of injection-driven shear slip experiments. In a second stage, we perform a parametric study by varying fluid pressurization rates to cover a higher dimensional parameter space. We demonstrate that, for high permeability laboratory samples, the energy release rate associated with fault reactivation can be effectively controlled by a stepwise fluid injection scheme, i.e. by the applied fluid pressurization rate and the duration of the constant pressure phase between each successive fluid pressurization phase. We observe a gradual transition from fault creep to slow stick-slip as the fluid pressurization rate increases. Furthermore, computed peak velocities for an extended range of fluid pressurization rate scenarios (0.5 MPa/min to 10 MPa/min) indicate a non-linear (power-law) relationship between the imposed fluid pressurization rate and the peak slip velocities, and consequently with the energy release rate, for scenarios with a fluid pressurization rate higher than a critical value of 4 MPa/min. We also observe that higher pressurization rates cause a delay in the stress release by the fault. We therefore argue that by adopting a stepwise fluid injection scheme with lower fluid pressurization rates may provide the operator with a better control over potential induced seismicity. The implications for field-scale applications that we can derive from our study are limited by the high matrix and fault permeability of the selected sample and the direct hydraulic connection between the injection well and the fault, which may not necessarily represent the conditions typical for fracture dominated deep geothermal reservoirs. Nevertheless, our results can serve as a basis for further laboratory experiments and field-scale modelling studies focused on better understanding the impact of stepwise injection protocols on fluid injection-induced seismicity.
Maximum size and magnitude of injection-induced slow slip events

Abstract:Fluid injections can induce aseismic slip, resulting in stress changes that may propagate faster than pore pressure diffusion, potentially triggering seismicity at significant distances from injection wells. Constraining the maximum extent of these aseismic ruptures is thus important for better delineating the influence zone of injections concerning their seismic hazard. Here we derive a scaling relation based on rupture physics for the maximum size of aseismic ruptures, accounting for fluid injections with arbitrary flow rate histories. Moreover, based on mounting evidence that the moment release during these operations is often predominantly aseismic, we derive a scaling relation for the maximum magnitude of aseismic slip events. Our theoretical predictions are consistent with observations over a broad spectrum of event sizes, from laboratory to real-world cases, indicating that fault-zone storativity, background stress state, and injected fluid volume are key determinants of the maximum size and magnitude of injection-induced slow slip events.

Abstract:Rates of seismicity in the Delaware Basin of Texas and New Mexico increased from 10 earthquakes per year of local magnitude (ML) 3.0 and above in 2017 to more than 185 in 2022, coincident with increasing oil and gas production and wastewater re‐injection into strata shallow or deeper than producing intervals. Events of large magnitude—up to ML 5.4 to‐date—occur on faults extending into formations above the basement that have received more than four billion barrels of injection. Here, we demonstrate the link between injection geology, pore pressure evolution, fault stability, and induced seismicity in this region. We find that the injection targets are largely dolomitized platform carbonates with low (<5 vol.%) matrix porosity and fracture‐enhanced permeability with inherent heterogeneity in flow properties. A comprehensive, three‐dimensional geological model populated with reservoir properties is used for fluid flow modeling, with global calibration supplemented by dynamic injectivity data. Pore pressure changes with deep injection are up to 5 MPa from 1983 to 2023, increasing the native pore pressure state by 10% locally. Modeling results show that earthquakes occurring at distances of up to 30 km from deep injection have experienced small (<0.1 MPa) pore pressure increases, indicating that the faults hosting these earthquakes are highly sensitive to changes in effective stress and have lower frictional stability than the 0.6 generally assumed. These results serve as a critical step in understanding the stress changes that induce earthquakes in one of the most seismically active and geologically complex basins in the US.

Abstract:SUMMARY In this work, we study the induced seismicity recorded during an injection operation at the Muara Laboh geothermal plant (Indonesia). The swarm, consisting of three bursts activating a normal fault zone, is characterized by rapid earthquake (km d−1) migration. We use a 2-D rate-and-state asperity model to better understand the physical mechanisms controlling the evolution of this induced swarm. The model suggests that the observed rapid seismic migration can be explained by the interaction among asperities through the expansion of slow post-seismic slip fronts. Also, it shows that the amount of seismicity generated by the fluid injection is strongly controlled by the background seismicity of the system, that is by the seismicity determined by the tectonic load charging the fault. This close correlation between natural and induced seismicity suggests that the injection in Muara Laboh principally stimulates critically stressed faults, which release the seismicity determined by their natural seismic cycle.

Abstract:Abstract How induced seismicity in deep geothermal project (enhanced geothermal systems, EGS) is controlled by fluid injection is of central importance for monitoring the related seismic risk. Here we analyze the relationship between the radiated seismic energy and the hydraulic energy related to the fluid injection during several hydraulic stimulations and circulation tests at Soultz‐sous‐Forêts geothermal site. Based on a harmonized database, we show that the ratio between these energies is at first order constant during stimulations and of the same magnitude independently of the stimulation protocol and injection depth. Re‐stimulations are characterized by a sharp evolution of this ratio during injection which ultimately converges to the characteristic value of the reservoir. This supports that the seismicity is caused by the relaxation of the pre‐existing strain energy in the stimulated volume, rather than by the deformation generated from fluid injection. The ratio appears as an intrinsic large‐scale property of the reservoir that can be assessed at the very beginning of the first stimulation. Based on this property, we suggest a way to predict the largest magnitude of the induced seismic events knowing the maximum targeted hydraulic energy of the injection.

Abstract:Induced seismicity associated with fluid injection has raised serious concerns for the safety and efficiency of geo-energy systems. Cyclic injection has recently been proposed as an alternative injection scheme to reduce the large magnitude injection-induced seismicity. However, the influence of cyclic injection on the activation of natural fractures in granite and the resulting seismic risk is not yet clear. This study investigates the injection-induced activation of a critically stressed natural fracture in a granite core sample, particularly focusing on the comparison between monotonic and cyclic water injection under pressure-controlled and volume-controlled conditions. Experimental results show that the acceleration and deceleration of fracture slip are modulated by the shear stress imbalance between the fixed shear stress and the evolving frictional strength of the fracture. Fracture slip affects the fluid pressure distribution on the fracture, which in turn regulates the frictional strength of the fracture. At a small total shear displacement (i.e., ~ 0.9 mm in this study), cyclic injection with a restricted peak injection pressure results in aseismic fracture slip at much smaller peak slip rates compared to that during the monotonic injection. On the one hand, the more uniform reduction in effective normal stress caused by cyclic injection encourages slow and stable fracture slip, characterized by the smaller peak slip rates. On the other hand, the flowback of injected fluid or suspension of injection could prevent the occurrence of fast-accelerated fracture slip during cyclic injection. However, the fracture can become unstable when it has experienced a considerable amount of total shear displacement (larger than ~ 0.9 mm in this study), and likely gained a significantly enhanced permeability. Continued injection after the unstable shut-in stage, signified by an unusual increase in slip rate and an accelerated drop in injection pressure, could result in rapid and unstable fracture slip.

Abstract:Abstract. Geologic carbon storage, as well as other geo-energy applications, such as geothermal energy, seasonal natural gas storage and subsurface energy storage imply fluid injection and/or extraction that causes changes in rock stress field and may induce (micro)seismicity. If felt, seismicity has a negative effect on public perception and may jeopardize wellbore stability and damage infrastructure. Thus, induced earthquakes should be minimized to successfully deploy geo-energies. However, numerous processes may trigger induced seismicity, which contribute to making it complex and translates into a limited forecast ability of current predictive models. We review the triggering mechanisms of induced seismicity. Specifically, we analyze (1) the impact of pore pressure evolution and the effect that properties of the injected fluid have on fracture and/or fault stability; (2) non-isothermal effects caused by the fact that the injected fluid usually reaches the injection formation at a lower temperature than that of the rock, inducing rock contraction, thermal stress reduction and stress redistribution around the cooled region; (3) local stress changes induced when low-permeability faults cross the injection formation, which may reduce their stability and eventually cause fault reactivation; (4) stress transfer caused by seismic or aseismic slip; and (5) geochemical effects, which may be especially relevant in carbonate-containing formations. We also review characterization techniques developed by the authors to reduce the uncertainty in rock properties and subsurface heterogeneity both for the screening of injection sites and for the operation of projects. Based on the review, we propose a methodology based on proper site characterization, monitoring and pressure management to minimize induced seismicity.

Abstract:Summary The Lacq area in southwest France has been associated with continuous moderate induced seismic activity since 1969. However, the mechanisms driving this induced seismicity are not fully understood: reservoir depletion has been proposed as the main factor, and more recently wastewater injection has been suggested to play a more important role (Grasso et al., 2021). The interpretation of these mechanisms relies heavily on the quality of earthquake locations, which we prove to be weak due to a lack of local instrumentation for several years. In order to provide the most complete and reliable induced event catalog for the studies of the Lacq induced seismicity mechanisms & seismic hazard, we made an exhaustive compilation, analysis and improvement of all available catalogs. We also provided new earthquake detections & relocations in a 3D velocity model from past and present temporary deployments never used for studying the Lacq area. Important remaining location uncertainties lead us to also carefully sort the events according to their location confidence, defining 3 classes of events (unconstrained location, location constrained within 2-3 km and 1-2 km respectively). This new harmonized catalog and the identification of well-constrained events, covering 50 years of induced seismicity, allow us to propose that wastewater injection is almost certainly the main mechanism driving the seismicity, with (i) most of the constrained events located within the reservoir boundaries and (ii) the released seismic energy variations following variations in injection operations at different scales. In particular, we have also highlighted a change in the injection-seismicity relationship around 2010–2013. From 2013, despite lower injection volumes, seismicity remained persistent and some clusters of earthquakes were detected predominantly in spring, summer, and early autumn, except in winter periods. From 2016, we observed a strong temporal relationship between days with higher rate/volume injections (approximately above 400m3/day) and both clustered events and higher magnitude earthquakes (greater than 2.4).

Transient evolution of permeability and friction in a slowly slipping fault activated by fluid pressurization

Abstract:The mechanisms of permeability and friction evolution in a natural fault are investigated in situ. During three fluid injection experiments at different places in a fault zone, we measured simultaneously the fluid pressure, fault displacements and seismic activity. Changes in fault permeability and friction are then estimated concurrently. Results show that fault permeability increases up to 1.58 order of magnitude as a result of reducing effective normal stress and cumulative dilatant slip, and 19-to-60.8% of the enhancement occurs without seismic emissions. When modeling the fault displacement, we found that a rate-and-state friction and a permeability dependent on both slip and slip velocity together reasonably fit the fault-parallel and fault-normal displacements. This leads to the conclusion that the transient evolution of fault permeability and friction caused by a pressure perturbation exerts a potentially dominant control on fault stability during fluid flow.

Abstract:It has long been known that human activities such as waste fluid disposal and reservoir impoundment may cause earthquakes. Recently, anthropogenic activities to tackle the increasing energy demand and to address climate change issues are also reported to induce earthquakes. These activities have a common attribute in that fluids are injected and extracted underground and induce spatiotemporal changes of pore pressure and stress, which may cause slip on faults. Induced earthquakes not only pose significant impacts on seismic hazard assessment and preparation, but also raise the question to the society as how to balance the economic needs of resources development and the public’s concerns about potential environmental impacts. Here we review the observations of fluid-injection/extraction induced earthquakes, ground deformation associated with these activities, and their physical mechanisms. Furthermore, we discuss the influences of induced earthquakes on seismic hazard models, regulatory policies on these anthropogenic activities, and current development of academic, industrial and government initiatives and collaborations in order to understand this intriguing phenomenon and address associated challenges.

Abstract:Abstract Induced seismicity is a limiting factor for the development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). Its causal mechanisms are not fully understood, especially those of post-injection seismicity. To better understand the mechanisms that induced seismicity in the controversial case of the Basel EGS (Switzerland), we perform coupled hydro-mechanical simulation of the plastic response of a discrete pre-existing fault network built on the basis of the monitored seismicity. Simulation results show that the faults located in the vicinity of the injection well fail during injection mainly triggered by pore pressure buildup. Poroelastic stressing, which may be stabilizing or destabilizing depending on the fault orientation, reaches further than pressure diffusion, having a greater effect on distant faults. After injection stops, poroelastic stress relaxation leads to the immediate rupture of previously stabilized faults. Shear-slip stress transfer, which also contributes to post-injection reactivation of distant faults, is enhanced in faults with slip-induced friction weakening.

Abstract:The injection‐induced slip of a fault containing along‐the‐fault geometrical complexities such as permeable cracks, dilational jogs and branches, was studied numerically using a plane‐strain hydraulic fracture model. The fault is modeled by placing complexities evenly spaced on either side of the inlet where fluid coming from a steady source is injected at a constant rate. The fault slip obeys the Coulomb friction law with slip weakening of the coefficient of friction. The applied shear stress is less than the residual fault strength, corresponding to a situation where a fault undergoes stable slip behind a slowly advancing rupture front. The numerical results show that the segments of complexity may not only delay slip zone extension and fluid flow, but temporarily increase slip rates. Short‐term faster slip rates occur after cracks and jogs are pressurized. The slip rate can reach values typical of microearthquake events, accompanied by rising and then dropping pressure and producing a stress release. Especially, the discontinuous slip sources are separated by the right‐angle jogs that do not slip. The slip on branches can be activated by fluid invasion and an associated normal effective stress reduction, and the slow slip sources eventually move from the fault to the branches. Even if a hydraulic fracturing treatment presents a low risk of generating dynamic slip, when fractures intersect faults containing geometrical complexities, fast slip events may be induced. The spatiotemporally varying slip rates and patterns presented provide an alternative interpretation for recorded seismic slip signals.
