Abstract:Despite technological advances in healthcare, pressure injuries (PIs) remain a major health problem, negatively impacting both patients and healthcare institutions. In a meta-analysis by Li et al, 1 the pooled PI prevalence among 1,366,848 patients was reported as 12.8%. Flattau et al 2 reported that among hospitalized patients with PIs, cumulative mortality was 44.6% at 90 days and 54.4% at 180 days. 2 Further, hospital length of stay is longer for patients with PIs in comparison to those without. Bauer et al 3 reported that patients with PIs were hospitalized for a mean of 11.1 (SD, 15) days, in comparison with stays of 4.6 (SD, 6.8) days for patients without PIs. 3 Similarly, Cremaso et al 4 noted lengths of hospital stay were 39.13 (SD, 24.89) days versus 25.94 (SD, 23.78) days for patients with or without PIs, respectively. 4 The length of the hospital stay increases with higher PI stages. 5 Pressure injuries cause pain, discomfort, sleep disturbances, mobility issues, and delayed rehabilitation 6 and negatively impact the psychological, physical, and social aspects of patients' lives. 6
