Abstract:Corn husk is an abundant agricultural waste. It has great potential for use as a cellulose source for the production of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The chemical composition of corn husk, such as cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, fatty and waxy matter, pectic matter and aqueous extract was determined. The cellulose extracted from corn husk was carboxymethylated using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and monochloroacetic acid (MCA), in aqueous ethanolic medium, under heterogeneous conditions. The carboxymethylation reaction was optimized as to the NaOH concentration, MCA concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time and cellulose particle size. The degree of substitution (DS) was determined with respect to the reaction conditions using chemical methods. The produced CMC was identified by FTIR and the crystallinity of the CMC was determined by XRD. The CMC product had an optimized DS of 2.41 and the optimal conditions for carboxymethylation were NaOH concentration, 7.5 mol/L; MCA concentration, 12 mol/L; reaction temperature, 55 °C; reaction time, 3.5 h and cellulose particle size, 74 μm. These optimization factors allowed to prepare highly substituted CMC with higher yield, 2.40 g/g, providing plenty of opportunities for its many applications.

Abstract:This study explores the potential of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) leaves (SCLs), a significant agricultural waste, for the sustainable production of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) utilizing an innovative approach of carboxymethylation with monochloroacetic acid and varying sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentrations (ranging from 20 to 60 g/100 mL). The optimal carboxymethylation condition was identified as 40 g/100 mL NaOH, which yielded the highest degree of substitution (DS = 0.86). Furthermore, a higher ash content in the obtained CMC indicated significant carboxymethyl substitution within the structure. The chemical structure of cellulose and the resulting polymers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The FTIR spectrum exhibited characteristic peaks of carboxymethyl groups and their salts at wavenumbers of 1588–1591 cm−1 and 1413–1415 cm−1, respectively. The analyses from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed detailed insights into the crystallinity and morphology of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The levels of heavy metals, including arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury, in the purified CMC were assessed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and were found to be within the recommended WHO/FAO limits, except for lead, which exceeded permissible levels. The prepared CMC demonstrated high purity at 99.34%, surpassing the 98.00% purity requirement for commercial-grade CMC. This product exhibits strong potential for diverse industrial applications, including paper coating, textile sizing and printing, ceramic glazing, and various uses in the oil industry.

Abstract:Cellulose was extracted from mild liquefaction residue of woody biomass and characterized by FT-IR and XRD.Then it was used as a raw material to synthesize carboxymethylcellulose sodium(CMC)by alkali-zation and etherification.The synthetic CMC had higher substitution degree than that of CMC synthesized by cellulose extracted directly from woody biomass,and had better water-solubility.The viscosity of 2% aqueous solution of the CMC product was less than 50 mPa·s,and belonged to low viscosity product.

Abstract:In this work, the polysaccharide carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was first activated via periodate oxidation then modified by insertion of photo-active cinnamic acid hydrazide moieties to finally produce the photo-crosslinkable CMC-CM with various extents of functionalizations. The chemical structures of the manufactured polymeric materials were entirely investigated utilizing FTIR, 1H, 13C NMR, and UV–vis spectra. Upon irradiation in UV light, the progress and kinetics of the cross-linking were detected using UV–vis spectra. Moreover, the crystallinity changes before and after chemical modification and subsequent UV irradiation were examined by XRD spectra. Also, the obtained hydrogels with various cross-linking densities were freeze dried to visualize the morphological changes using SEM. In addition, the rheological experiments indicated the improvement of the hydrogel mechanical properties by increasing both UV irradiation time and degree of cinnamate functionalization. The obtained hydrogel exhibited good swelling, gelation and biodegradation properties, which indicate a promising potential in different biomedical applications.

Abstract:Among the multiple industrial applications of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), those related to food and beverages industries (e.g. as thickener, stabilizer, emulsifier, binding agent), involve one fourth of the global CMC consumption. In the last years, a number of abundant and underutilized vegetable cellulose sources have been assayed as raw material for CMC production, as alternatives to cotton linters or cellulose feedstocks obtained from bleached pulps derived from wood. Alternatively, cellulose of microbial origin appears as a very promising highly pure raw material for CMC production.Together with molecular weight and substituents distribution, it is well established that the degree of substitution (DS) of CMC plays a key role in most food and beverages applications. In the current contribution, highly pure cellulose of bacterial origin was used to produce CMC with tailored DS in a two-stage process consisting of alkalinization with sodium hydroxide, followed by etherification with sodium monochloroacetate. Aiming to get insight into how the carboxymethylation extent conferred to BC can be easily tuned within the DS interval allowed for food uses (i.e. 0.2–1.5), the effects of NaOH concentration, molar NaOH/anhydroglucose unit ratio, molar etherifying reagent/anhydroglucose unit ratio, and etherification time, were systematically analyzed. By proper control of those variables, CMC samples with tailored DS within the 0.60–1.52 interval could be successfully obtained. Samples with varying DS were further characterized by means of FTIR, solid state 13C NMR, XRD and TGA. The suitability of using TGA data for estimating the carboxymethylation extent achieved is proposed.

Abstract:"Sugarcane leaves are an abundant agricultural waste with the potential for use as a source of cellulose. Cellulose from sugarcane leaves was converted to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by carboxymethylation using sodium hydroxide and monochloroacetic acid in isopropyl alcohol. The yield of CMC was 212.16%. A degree of substitution (DS) equivalent to 0.79 was obtained during the conversion, indicating that the product was water-soluble. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy confirmed the presence of major peaks expected for carboxymethyl substitution, compared to commercial CMC. Thermal properties were studied using simultaneous thermal analysis (STA). Melting temperature (Tm) and degradation temperature (Td) of the sample were 116.6 °C and 270.4 °C, respectively, while the residual mass of 36.49% at 800 °C indicated the presence of a non-volatile component fraction. CMC morphology showed a non-circular form with small particles. Results indicated the potential of sugarcane leaves for production of commercial grade CMC."

Abstract:In the present study, we have produced a sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) hydrogel from a bacterial cellulose etherification reaction with chloroacetic acid in an alkaline medium. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was synthesized via economical and environmentally friendly methods using the Gluconacetobacter xylinus bacterium. After purification, freeze-drying, and milling, BC microparticles were dispersed in NaOH solution for different time periods before the etherification reaction. This has allowed the understanding of the alkalinization effect on BC modification. All synthesized CMC were soluble in water, and FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed the etherification reaction. The bath of BC in NaOH solution affects both molecular weight and degree of substitution. SEM analysis revealed the change of BC microstructure from fibrous-like to a smooth, uniform structure. The CMC-0 h allowed the production of crosslinked hydrogel after dehydrothermal treatment. Such hydrogel has been characterized rheologically and has shown a water absorption of 35 times its original weight. The optimization of the CMC produced from BC could pave the way for the production of ultrapure hydrogel to be applied in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:Cellulose from Asparagus officinalis stalk end was extracted and synthesized to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCas) using monochloroacetic acid (MCA) via carboxymethylation reaction with various sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentrations starting from 20% to 60%. The cellulose and CMCas were characterized by the physical properties, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, mechanical properties of CMCas films were also investigated. The optimum condition for producing CMCas was found to be 30% of NaOH concentration for the carboxymethylation reaction, which provided the highest percent yield of CMCas at 44.04% with the highest degree of substitution (DS) at 0.98. The melting point of CMCas decreased with increasing NaOH concentrations. Crystallinity of CMCas was significantly deformed (p < 0.05) after synthesis at a high concentration. The L* value of the CMCas was significantly lower at a high NaOH concentration compared to the cellulose. The highest tensile strength (44.59 MPa) was found in CMCas film synthesized with 40% of NaOH concentration and the highest percent elongation at break (24.99%) was obtained in CMCas film treated with 30% of NaOH concentration. The applications of asparagus stalk end are as biomaterials in drug delivery system, tissue engineering, coating, and food packaging.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a water‐soluble cellulose, can be derived from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFBs). In addition to being highly soluble, it is essential for CMC to exhibit excellent thermal stability when utilized in biocomposites. Reactants in the alkalization and etherification steps to provide high DS of CMC‐based OPEFB have not been standardized. The research aimed to optimize the alkalization and etherification processes using a response surface methodology (RSM). This will help in determining the optimal ratios of 30% NaOH (the center point of 3), isopropanol (the center point of 30) as maceration media, and monochloroacetic acid (the center point of 1.2) needed for the cellulose. RSM determined the optimum ratio of 30% NaOH to OPEFB cellulose, which was 3.36 : 1, an isopropanol ratio of 30.62 : 1, and an MCA to cellulose ratio of 1.19 : 1. The optimization indicates that the OPEFB cellulose‐based CMC have a high degree of substitution of 1.28 and a carboxymethyl content of 31.93%. CMC morphology showed noticeable changes, such as a smoother surface and swelling. There was a significant increase in the wavenumber of 1580 cm −1 due to the presence of carbonyl groups. The OPEFB‐based CMC resulted in a crystallinity of 40.18%, and thermal gravimetric analysis indicated that mass decreases occurred at high temperatures of 500°C, which suggests that the optimal CMC has a high thermal stability. OPEFB‐based CMC exhibits a high degree of substitution and resistance to thermal degradation, which makes it suitable for further use as the main material in biocomposite films.

Abstract:In the present study, cellulose (SWC) extracted from green seaweed Ulva fasciata was processed to synthesize carboxymethyl cellulose (SWCMC). The seaweed cellulose (∼15% DW) was first processed for α cellulose extraction (10.1% on DW) followed by the synthesis and characterization of SWCMC. Thin films were prepared using commercial CMC (CCMC), SWCMC and SWCMC-metal nanoparticle (2% wt/v) by solvent evaporation technique. Films were studied for molecular weight, degree of carboxylation, viscosity and characterized by FT-IR and TGA. AFM surface morphology of SWCMC-metal nanoparticle film confirms the uniform distribution of sphere shaped metal nanoparticle on the film surface with the size in the range of 50-75nm. Further, SWCMC film showed antimicrobial activity when prepared with Ag and leaf extract of Azadirachta indica. The biodegradable nature of SWCMC film was confirmed by growing marine fungus Cladosporium spherospermum on CMC agar plates. Thus, SWCMC films exhibit potential applications in cosmetic, food, textiles, medical, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: This paper describes the reuse of paper sludge, an industrial solid waste, for the preparation of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The process includes pretreatment, basification and etherification.RESULTS: The optimal pretreatment condition involved the addition of 6.7% hydrochloric acid to the paper sludge for 30 min at 70 degrees C. The order of factors influencing the effect of reaction was: etherification temperature > sodium hydroxide dose > basification temperature > etherification time > sodium chloroacetate dose. The optimal preparation condition of CMC was: m(paper sludge): m(sodium hydroxide): m(sodium chloroacetate) = 0.9 : 0.8 : 1.15; basification at 40 degrees C; etherification at 60 degrees C for 1 h. Under these conditions, certified CMC with viscosity less than 20 mPa.s, DS more than 0.50 and purity more than 90% was produced. The results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra analyses indicated that the product has characteristics of high degree of substitution (DS) and low crystallinity. The coated paper using CMC prepared from paper sludge as a water retention agent can meet the quality standards of GB/T 10335.1-2005.CONCLUSION: Preparation of CMC from paper sludge can be considered a feasible alternative, generating value-added product and contributing to solving environmental problems resulting from paper sludge. Abstract:AIMS This study reports the findings of research aimed at determining the rate of prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children of school age. SUBJECTS AND METHOD The epidemiological study was conducted using a community sample extracted by means of multi stage stratified sampling according to socio economic level and schooling and consisted in 1,141 children of both sexes of school age from the city of Maracaibo. The revised Conners scales were used to collect data. RESULTS The estimated prevalence of ADHD was 7.19% and we also obtained 0.35% for the hyperactive type, 1.14% for the disattentional subtype, and 5.70% for the combined type. Contrary to what was expected, prevalence was higher for females. It was found that 7.45% of the general sample scored higher on the academic problems scales, whereas for the sample identified as having ADHD, academic problems were 50% and the comorbidity between ADHD and academic problems was confirmed. CONCLUSIONS The estimates for prevalence found in this study are consistent with those reported in the literature, which suggests that ADHD is a valid diagnosis for Marabino children.
Disease outcome of patients with pancreatic cancer in a cohort treated outside clinical trials.

Abstract:This retrospective study included 92 consecutive patients with locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer treated in the Turku University Hospital in 2010. The diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was verified by either histological samples (adenocarcinoma) or by imaging or both, excluding other known histological types of tumours. Median patient survival was 11 months. Smokers had a better median overall survival (20 months) than non-smokers (10 months) (p=0.029). Patients with carcinoma of the head of pancreas had the best survival rates (15 months), whereas those with cancers of the tail of pancreas reached a median survival of only 3 months. The importance of this small trial resides in its retrospective and non-randomized nature, analyzing real-life patients, as encountered in daily practice, out of which, unfortunately, a substantial proportion would not be eligible for any randomized clinical trial.

Abstract:Sago pulp (57% w/w) isolated from sago waste was converted to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by etherification using sodium monochloroacetate and sodium hydroxide. The reaction was optimized against temperature, concentration and reaction time. The optimized product has a large degree of substitution (DS) of 0.821, which compared favorably to other forms of cellulose. Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FTIR) were used to characterize the product and starting sago pulp. Digital photographs of sago waste and sago pulp showed the expected rough woody structure while that of the CMC generated from the pulp showed a smooth surface morphology.

Abstract:Crystalline cellulose nanofibril (CNF) was isolated from cotton linter pulp using an acid hydrolysis method and used as a filler to reinforce sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) film. The CNF was in rod shape with the diameter of 23-38 nm and the length of 125-217 nm and crystallinity index (CI) was 0.89. The effect of CNF concentration (1, 3, 5, and 10 wt% based on CMC) on the optical, morphological, mechanical, water vapor barrier, surface hydrophobicity, and thermal properties of the nanocomposites were studied. The CNF was evenly distributed in the polymer matrix to form smooth and flexible films indicating the CNF is highly compatible with the CMC. The tensile strength (TS) and elastic modulus (EM) of CMC film increased by 23% and 27%, respectively, while the elongation (E) decreased by 28% with 5 wt% of CNF inclusion. The WVP of CMC film decreased at low content of CNF, and increased with increase in CNF content, then decreased but to the same level of the control CMC film with the inclusion of 10 wt% of CNF. Transparency of CMC film decreased slightly from 87.7% to 86.2% with 5 wt% of CNF. The CMC/CNF composite films have a high potential to be used as an edible coating or packaging films for the extension of shelf life of fresh and minimally processed fruits and vegetables.

Abstract:The increase in the population rate has increased the demand for safe and quality food products. However, the current agricultural system faces many challenges in producing vegetables and fruits. Indiscriminate use of pesticides and fertilizers, deficiency of water resources, short shelf life of products postharvest, and nontargeted delivery of agrochemicals are the main challenges. In this regard, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is one of the most promising materials in the agriculture sector for minimizing these challenges due to its mechanical strength, viscosity, wide availability, and edibility properties. CMC also has high water absorbency; therefore, it can be used for water deficiency (as superabsorbent hydrogels). Due to the many hydroxyl groups on its surface, this substance has high efficacy in removing pollutants, such as pesticides and heavy metals. Enriching CMC coatings with additional substances, such as antimicrobial, antibrowning, antioxidant, and antisoftening materials, can provide further novel formulations with unique advantages. In addition, the encapsulation of bioactive materials or pesticides provides a targeted delivery system. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the use of CMC in agriculture and its applications for preserving fruit and vegetable quality, remediating agricultural pollution, preserving water sources, and encapsulating bioactive molecules for targeted delivery.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is modified cellulose extracted from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) biomass waste that has been prepared through etherification using sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) in the presence of sodium hydroxide. In this research, CMC hydrogel was prepared using calcium chloride (CaCl2) as the chemical crosslinker. Throughout the optimization process, four important parameters were studied, which were: (1) CMC concentration, (2) CaCl2 concentration, (3) reaction time, and (4) reaction temperature. From the results, the best gel content obtained was 28.11% at 20% (w/v) of CMC with 1% (w/v) of CaCl2 in 24 h reaction at room temperature. Meanwhile, the degree of swelling for CMC hydrogel was 47.34 g/g. All samples were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, TGA, and FESEM to study and compare modification on the OPEFB cellulose. The FT-IR spectrum of CMC hydrogel showed a shift of COO− peaks at 1585 cm−1 and 1413 cm−1, indicating the substitution of Ca2+ into the CMC molecular chains. The XRD diffractogram of CMC hydrogel showed no observation of sharp peaks, which signified an amorphous hydrogel phase. The CrI value also proved the decrement of the crystalline nature of CMC hydrogel. TGA–DTG thermograms showed that the Tmax of CMC hydrogel at 293.33 °C is slightly better in thermal stability compared to CMC. Meanwhile, the FESEM micrograph of CMC hydrogel showed interconnected pores indicating the crosslinkages in CMC hydrogel. CMC hydrogel was successfully synthesized using CaCl2 as a crosslinking agent, and its swelling ability can be used in various applications such as drug delivery systems, industrial effluent, food additives, heavy metal removal, and many more.

Abstract:Highly functional and robust biobased materials are still in research to produce valuable composites for various applications. The literature shows the gap of new raw biobased materials in market which can functionally tuned and structurally modified for development of 2d/3d architectures. Thus, in the present study, very cheap, easily available agricultural waste, pineapple leaf fiber (PL-raw) was used for the isolation of microcrystalline cellulose (PL-MCC) and further functionalized using upscaled chemical approach to carboxymethyl microcrystalline cellulose (PL-CMMCC). Very advanced techniques like Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) served to characterize the raw material, high crystalline PL-MCC, and modified carboxy methyl MCC. FTIR determined presence of different absorbed peak at approximately 1620.2 cm −1 , and at 1423.8 cm −1 , carboxyl groups were assigned to PL-CMMCC. On the other hand, the XRD findings verified that PL-CMMCC's crystalline structure has decreased. Analysis by SEM revealed a damaged surface morphology for PL-CMMCC. Following chemical treatments, the EDX analysis revealed that each fiber sample contained a highly pure cellulose elemental composition. Thus, results explain the utilization of agricultural waste, pineapple leaf fiber to high valuable products like highly crystalline PL-MCC, in addition further modification of PL-MCC could leads to formation of highly functional material that could be used for other applications too in future.
