Abstract:Over the last 20 years, women's sexuality has become one of the most written about and intensely debated subjects in sexology, sociology and women's studies in mainland China. From these studies, one can trace the development of academic discourse on women's sexuality through three distinct phases: from a predominantly medical discourse, to the use of survey methods to investigate women's real experiences, and finally to a phase in which Western theories have become increasingly influential. Each phase features a distinct stereotype of woman. The implications of this review for sexual research in China will also be discussed.

Abstract:This article examines the role of sociology in the newly emerged interdisciplinary field of sexology in China, the purpose of which is to produce the ideal citizen. Two strands of Chinese sexology are identified, the biomedical and subjective constructionist models. The former promotes sex for pleasure to enhance marital harmony and thus social stability. Through the establishment of new norms of behavior and relations to the self, individuals are called on to be modern subjects who master sexual knowledge and enjoy a quality sex life with a proper frequency of sex. Those who fail are subject to the control of the medical regime. The latter model emphasizes the recognition of subjective interpretation and divergent sexual practices, and has the potential to serve as a corrective to the biomedical model.

Scientia sexualis versus ars erotica: Foucault, van Gulik, Needham

Abstract:This paper begins with a discussion of the scientia sexualis/ars erotica distinction, which Foucault first advances in History of Sexuality Vol. 1, and which has been employed by many scholars to do a variety of analytical work. Though Foucault has expressed his doubts regarding his conceptualization of the differences between Western and Eastern discourses of desire, he never entirely disowns the distinction. In fact, Foucault remains convinced that China must have an ars erotica. I will explore Foucault's sources of authority. To this end, I introduce the work of famous Dutch sinologist Robert Hans van Gulik, who published the tremendously influential Sexual Life in Ancient China in 1961, and also explore Joseph Needham's view on Chinese sex. I argue that, Foucault, in his fierce polemic against the "Repressive Hypothesis", himself imagined a utopian Other where pleasure and desire were organised differently. I end on a discuss on Orientalism and the project of "Sinography" of comparative literature scholars Haun Saussy, Eric Hayot and others.

Abstract:This article examines the changing contours of Chinese sexuality studies by locating recent research in historical context. Our aim is to use the literature we review to construct a picture of the sexual landscape in China and the sociocultural and political conditions that have shaped it, enabling readers unfamiliar with China to understand its sexual culture and practices. In particular, we focus on the consequences of recent changes under the Xi regime for individuals' sexual lives and for research into sexuality. While discussing the social and political regulation of sexuality, we also attend to the emergence of new forms of gendered and sexual subjectivity in postsocialist China. We argue throughout that sexuality in China is interwoven with the political system in a variety of ways, in particular through the tension between neoliberal and authoritarian styles of governance. We explore normative and dissident sexualities as well as forms of sexual conduct that are officially "deviant" but nonetheless tolerated or even tacitly enabled by the party-state. In particular, we highlight the dilemmas and contradictions faced by China's citizens as they negotiate their sexual lives under "socialism with Chinese characteristics."

Abstract:In the past four decades, sexuality research in China has made considerable advancements. From historical and sociological perspectives, our study reviews the literature and provides a comprehensive overview of sexuality in contemporary China by drawing on recent survey data that we collected. First, we introduce sexuality in ancient and modern China and discuss the social contexts that gave rise to a sexual revolution in China. Second, we briefly review empirical research on sexuality in China. Finally, we present results on recent changes and socioeconomic patterns of sexual attitudes and behaviors based on our survey-the 2020 Chinese Private Life Survey. A cohort analysis reveals that sexual attitudes have become more liberal in China, with an earlier sex debut and more diverse sexual activities. Surprisingly, however, we find that sexuality seems to have diminished in its appeal among young cohorts, who have lower rates of sexual frequency than preceding cohorts. In addition, we find a reversal in educational gradient in relation to sexual activeness and diversity. Among those born before 1980, highly educated Chinese are more sexually active, while among those born after 1980 the lower educated are more sexually active-in terms of their sexual activity with their partners, seeking out sexual partners online, and engaging in commercial sex. Compared with women, men have higher levels of sexual well-being.

Abstract:This paper is based on an overall review of the history of sexuality research within and outside of China with the authors' own experience and reflections in Chinese context.It proposes the concept of “subjective construction" as part of the social construction theory to be the main perspective in the field of sexuality study,and also examines its background,rationale,significance and potential development space.Using examples in Chinese contexts,the authors argue that sexuality study,especially in the field of sociology should be based on the indigenous understanding of the sexual issues and concerns,communicate with the western theories and studies critically and selectively,deconstruct over-medicalization and focus on the sexuality in Chinese social and political context based on daily,bodily and diverse experience.

Abstract:Through a meta-literature review, this paper examines the changing contours of Chinese sociology of homosexuality in contemporary China. It unfolds the different theoretical orientations and methodologies that construct the modern male homosexual subject under major socio-economic and political changes. Chinese sociology of homosexuality started in the reform era and has been dominated by Western knowledge production and the political ideology of the communist party-state. Fused with the bio-medical model and the state's modernization project in the 1980s–1990s, the sociological study adopted a functionalist and positivistic approach with survey-based methodology in the main which focused on the etiology of homosexuality. A new transnational knowledge production of sociology of homosexuality has formed since the 2000s which has shifted towards a constructivist/ post-structuralist approach and reflexive qualitative methodology. The new sociological study examines the rise of male (as well as female) homosexual identity in China, questions the hetero/homosexual binary and discusses how an individual makes sense of homosexual identity to form same-sex intimate relationships. By tracing the epistemology of homosexuality in contemporary China, this paper rethinks the dominance of the Western construction and the role of the state in shaping the knowledge of homosexuality and proposes alternative spaces for theorizing Chinese sexual identities, desires and practices.

Abstract:Around the May Fourth Movement,psychoanalysis theory entered into China,almost all writers in Chinese literary world know him,and have direct and indirect connection of Freudian influence.Some novels by Lu Xun and several sections and chapters of " Weeds" are all in the subconscious domain,and dig up the psychological factor and the spirit specific properties of figures,making his works possess outstanding degree of depth and the scope of the soul.The works by Zhou Zuo-ren,Yang Zhen-sheng,Wang Yi-ren and Wang Jing-xi etc.are written with the technique of the instinctive theory of Freudian unconsciousness and nature,expressing the mental pathological changes of the figures and their depressed and abnormal nature,and the distorted human nature under the feudal society.
The Move Toward Spiritual Asceticism in Chinese Sexual Culture

Abstract:Certain observers of traditional Chinese culture have recently argued that China has consistently practiced sexual prohibition and sexual asceticism. This is certainly not the case. Bearing in mind the various historical forms sexual prohibition takes, we must first clarify what actually is being restricted and to what level. We will thus see that the history of sex in China is not unlike that of the West: Both proceed from marital taboos which then develop into sexual taboos. A spiritual asceticism is only acquired later on. In China it is not until the early period of the Qing dynasty that spiritual asceticism is fully established. Although this may correspond historically, both in terms of the period and its manifestation with British-American Protestantism, the actual social consequences of the Chinese experience were precisely the opposite. As far as the sexual history of humanity is concerned, that there should be two different outcomes from a similar historical trajectory remains a great mystery.
Sexuality and the official construction of Occidentalism in Maoist and early post-Mao China

Abstract:In Occidentalism, Xiaomei Chen observes that the West was employed by the opponents of official institutions as a liberating force against the Chinese government in the post-Mao period. As her arguments are premised on the basis that the government views the West as the contrary, the book briefly delineates ‘official Occidentalism’ that serves for domestic oppression of its citizens, and occasionally cultural imperialism toward its socialist brother. Nevertheless, this observation, as she admits, does not intend to totalize all cultural aspects and diversities. Encapsulating highly controversial and contested categories, as well as complicated or even contradictory sentiments, sexuality broaches a new subject matter on the study of Occidentalism. Situated in the genealogy of representing the West in Maoist and early post-Mao China by the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, the People’s Daily, this article argues that, while sexuality had been silenced and suppressed under administrative penalties and Party disciplinary sanctions, it was powerfully embedded within and stereotyped by socialist ideologies, serving as a tool for the government to construct socialist superiority and capitalist inferiority, by means of which ‘new China’ gets healed from historical trauma, the socialist regime is justified, Western cultural imperialism is resisted, political allegiance is sustained, sino-centrism is re-established within the domestic sphere and the identity of the party-state is mediated. In doing so, the article aims to provide a theoretical construction of ‘official Occidentalism’ from the multiple lens of sexualities in Maoist and early post-Mao China.

Boundless China and Backward Asians: Hegemonic Confucianism as Epistemological Violence in Queer Psychology

Abstract:The formation of queer psychology has been a critical intervention in breaking apart the psychological tendency of reifying categories of gender and sexuality. Nonetheless, latent Orientalism and white-centered epistemologies in psychology have continued to produce culturally essentialist depictions of a repressive "Chinese sexuality" and "backward Asian culture." In this article, I present three main problems in psychological representations of Sinophone queers: (a) "cultural colorblindness" resulting from the conflation of race and culture, (b) the problematic analytical category of "Chineseness," and (c) race and culture being theorized as a burden for Sinophone and Asian queers. In order for psychology and queer studies scholars to destabilize these epistemologically violent interpretations, this article argues that we must engage with Sinophone critique and shift away from a framework of culture to one of "concerns" in order to capture the heterogeneity of queer Sinophone subjectivities.
The Retreat and Expansion of “Inside Reality”---The Love Theme in Shanghai Literature

Abstract:The May Forth fictions tended to advocate marriage with love and made a change of female im-ages in literature from spiritually beauty to physically exotica. Therefore, classical aesthetic perception encountered with the great crash of modernist thoughts, leading to a split between “form” and “spirit”. Meanwhile, the love subject in Shanghai school’s fictions went a bit further to get rid of the action mean-ings of matrimony, turning themselves to expressions of pure physical senses. As the originally physical desire took over the rational morality, love began to end up with the addictions of Eros, instead of mar-riage. Accordingly, the enlightenment spirit of the May Forth had been deconstructed, and the whole ac-tion meaning of love was replaced by the psychological analysis. During this period, people’ s moral value showed a declining tendency. By thinking of life itself, the Shanghai school’ s writers separate themselves from good morality and came towards the ego theory of Freud. Finally, they abandoned the attentions on the outside world and retreated back to examine their own wild “inside reality”.

Abstract:China is undergoing rapid changes in sexual mores due to several reasons such as decreasing control of the state over private lives of individuals, globalization of its economy, and some policies initiated by the state. There is increased acceptance of premarital sex and extramarital sex in China, especially among youth. In historically conservative China, influenced by Confucian ideals of patriarchal dominance for centuries, the sexual freedom currently enjoyed by many is unprecedented. This has impacted women's status and sexual lives in several positive ways such as increasing freedom of sexual expression, control over their bodies, sexual choices, and increasing equality with men in all spheres of life. However several negative consequences such as a rise in STD/HIV prevalence, commercial sex, and divorce rates have also been attributed to the ongoing sexual revolution in China. Recommendations combating these and suggestions for directions in future research are discussed.
The Freudian subject and the Maoist mind: the diaries of Hermine Hug-Hellmuth and Lei Feng

Abstract:Although written in vastly different cultural contexts and periods, Hermine Hug-Hellmuth's "Diary of a Young Girl" (1919) and Lei Feng's "The Diary of Lei Feng" (1963) both to a large extent were written as concept pieces, with the goal of illustrating specific theories of the self. In the case of Hug-Hellmuth, the underlying theory is the Freudian sexualized unconscious mind, whereas for Lei Feng, it is Maoist revolutionary optimism. Additionally, both diaries have unusually strong inauthentic or 'fake' aspects. Although Hug-Hellmuth never admitted to writing the diary, most critics believed it came from her pen. Lei Feng's diary was revised through his own attempts to present himself as politically progressive, by editors, and through successive political movements that focused on the person behind the diary and made him one of the most widely-recognized figures in China. As such, the diaries are excellent windows into powerful and long-lasting ideological constructs.

Abstract:This paper aims to reexamine and reevaluate the Chinese women's liberation legacies by exploring Chinese female subjectivities in a culturally and historically specific way.It identifies the constructive role that Chinese Socialist modernity discourses played in promoting gender equality,gender neutrality and communist gender morality(comradeship) as well as in constructing women's sense of independence and agency and questioning male authorities.State gender discourses,together with the May Fourth liberal feminist legacy of independent personhood discourses,served to break the hierarchical gendered boundaries,resist the sexual essentialism and to construct empowering definitions of female identities.

Abstract:"Amorous histories" represent an unofficial historical tradition that once served as a legitimate mechanism for narrating same-sex desire in Chinese culture. This tradition not only celebrated love ( qing ) but also explored obsession ( pi ) within the Chinese context. This article reexamines the erotic arts, including notes and erotic fictions, that constituted the narrative mechanism of amorous histories to rethink the intricate stance of both praise and critique towards male love during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The analysis reveals how these texts repeatedly employed a narrative tactic of combining enticement and moral suasion to represent male love. While legitimizing male love, these representations were simultaneously regulated by the moral norms of official histories. However, during the late Qing and early Republican era, the tradition of amorous histories began to wane and eventually gave way to the emergence of pathological narratives under the guise of "sexual histories" in modern China. Within the discourse of sexual histories, the tradition of praising qing and pi was substituted by Western-influenced "the science of sexuality," which pathologized same-sex desire. This article traces the changes in the meaning of " pi, " which underwent a phase of non-pathologized development in Ming and Qing dynasties, before being pathologized by May 4th literati. Finally, this article analyses the impact of the replacement of amorous histories with pathologized sexual histories on the debates over homosexuality between Hu Qiuyuan and Yang Youtian in modern China. It shows how changes in historical narratives influenced early twentieth century perceptions of same-sex desire.

Examining the Links Between Beauty Ideals Internalization, the Objectification of Women, and Ambivalent Sexism Among Chinese Women: The Effects of Sexual Orientation

Abstract:The widespread propagation of beauty ideals has made their influence inescapable for women worldwide. Numerous studies have suggested the negative consequences of the internalization of beauty ideals. However, researchers have mostly focused on Western cultures, with only a few studies addressing China. Given that Chinese traditional Confucian values emphasize more reproduction and family duties of women, women suffer more pressures in China. However, not all women experience and respond to cultural practices in the same way. The present study aimed to examine the mechanism underlying the link between the internalization of beauty ideals and ambivalent sexism and the differences in this link among subgroups of Chinese women. Data were collected from a sample of 293 (146 heterosexual women, 147 sexual minority women). The results showed that the associations of the internalization of beauty ideals with hostile sexism and benevolent sexism were mediated by the objectification of women. Furthermore, the link between the internalization of beauty ideals and the objectification of women depended on women's sexual orientation. More specifically, for lesbian and bisexual women but not heterosexual women, the internalization of beauty ideals was positively associated with the objectification of women. The present study addressed a major gap by examining how and for whom the internalization of beauty ideals was associated with increased hostile sexism and benevolent sexism among Chinese women. Sociocultural factors and implications are discussed.

Abstract:The core of Chinese political culture and value culture lies in Taoism,Confucianism and law, more specifically in the thoughts of Lao Zi, Confucius and Shang Zi. Lao Zi stresses the importance of Tao, Confucius values the importance of humanism, while Shang Zi pays more attention to the role of Law. The three schools have their own strengths and weaknesses, and their essence is complementary. The author calls the core and essence of the thoughts of Lao Zi, Confucius and Shang Zi as constituting Huaxia Doctrine, which focuses on people, attaches importance to Tao and emphasizes law. While mainly discussing national governance, it also applies to the study and application of international relations, providing an observation perspective different from the western mainstream theories of international relations.
