The Retreat and Expansion of “Inside Reality”---The Love Theme in Shanghai Literature

Abstract:The May Forth fictions tended to advocate marriage with love and made a change of female im-ages in literature from spiritually beauty to physically exotica. Therefore, classical aesthetic perception encountered with the great crash of modernist thoughts, leading to a split between “form” and “spirit”. Meanwhile, the love subject in Shanghai school’s fictions went a bit further to get rid of the action mean-ings of matrimony, turning themselves to expressions of pure physical senses. As the originally physical desire took over the rational morality, love began to end up with the addictions of Eros, instead of mar-riage. Accordingly, the enlightenment spirit of the May Forth had been deconstructed, and the whole ac-tion meaning of love was replaced by the psychological analysis. During this period, people’ s moral value showed a declining tendency. By thinking of life itself, the Shanghai school’ s writers separate themselves from good morality and came towards the ego theory of Freud. Finally, they abandoned the attentions on the outside world and retreated back to examine their own wild “inside reality”.
