Abstract:Early modem novels configuring modernity are established on the basis of the motif of ethical self-confession between double-domed male hero and another male intellectual. The literary ethical device of self-confession is created by male intellectuals and emerged through the interaction between the male characters. Modem Japanese literature has thus created the standard method of the modem novel as it expresses the modern individual's ethical sense. of guilt or ethical inner conflicts through confession. In this respect, it is not unconvincing to say that the new modem state as well as the individual has builtthe ethical order which form the background of the birth of modem Japanese literature. This paper will not only examine the literary ethics implicit in the device of confession, but also provide an alternative approach to the history of modem Japanese literature by adopting Nie Zhenzhao's Method of "ethical literary criticism."

Abstract:This essay argues that confession in the Decameron is a liminal activity, which affords characters and readers a milieu removed from the space of society in which transformation and ultimately a temporary moment of transcendence of the secular world (almost a return to paradise) are achieved. In the tales of the Decameron in which confession is central to the narrative (novelle I.1, III.3, and VII.5), the liminal is a locus of trickery. Boccaccio subverts the notion of spiritual transcendence traditionally associated with the sacrament of confession and playfully substitutes the profane and the divine for each other. The parallels these stories establish between confession as a liminal activity and reading the Decameron suggests that Boccaccio’s masterpiece has the potential to transform its public in social but not necessarily metaphysical ways.

Abstract:In this work we will first discuss the love and passion of the two heroines in La Celestina and Romance of the Western Chamber. We will then compare them with the aim of demonstrating the similarities and differences between the two protagonists, Melibea and Cui Yingying, with respect to female curiosity and disguise, free will, lust and sensual love. Specifically, they are both maids locked up in their rooms, and they feel the same curiosity towards the other sex. They also feel the same dissatisfaction with family restraints and feudal morality and aspire to freedom in love. This establishes a basis for the artistic creation of free love and feminism in later love literature.

Abstract:This dissertation compares representations of women in erotic triangles. I contend that despite the stability implied by the triangular shape, the erotic triangle can be made unstable through women’s language. The first chapter examines medieval and contemporary writing on an essential relationship in the triangle: the friendship between the husband and the lover. Amicitia, chaste friendships between men, had its roots in Greek and Latin philosophy, and recently these relationships have been investigated according to mimetic desire (Girard) or homosocial desire (Sedgwick). In both medieval and modern configurations, these relationships are usually predicated upon the exchange of women. Claude Lévi-Strauss, Gayle Rubin and Luce Irigaray provide anthropological and literary explorations of the economic model where men exchange women to strengthen their homosocial bond. In the three texts, women use linguistic techniques to destabilize the erotic triangle. One is irony: frequently, one character does not understand an ironic statement and is excluded from the relationship between the other two participants. A second is pragmatic implicature, which is

Abstract:The place food and hunger occupy in the Decameron encapsulates the essence of two mutually exclusive worlds : the world of the powerful, who have access to copious food, and the world of the powerless, who do not. This distinction, created on the basis of the quantity of food consumed, dovetails into the discourse of human appetite for sexual fulfilment and material possessions. These principles guide Decameron I, V and III, X. In the first Novella (I, V), the King of France’s attempt to seduce the Marchesana of Monferrato hinges on his desire to consume a meal at her house. By offering him a copious dinner based solely on chicken meat, she concedes to the excessiveness the occasion demands but defuses his advances. Fiction with Fiction: Confessing to Dante in Decameron I.1

Abstract:This essay addresses one specific element of Decameron I.1, the curious order in which the holy friar questions Ciappelletto in his confession, and relates it to the larger dialogue Boccaccio establishes with Dante’s Commedia. By avoiding the canonical models of confessing penitents, which traditionally unfolded according to the Decalogue, the seven deadly sins, or the sinner’s circumstances, the confession proceedings in the first novella evoke most distinctively and idiosyncratically the order of sins in Dante’s hell. Dante’s authoritative but not canonical text about the Christian afterlife, thus, colors our reading of the first novella of the new work, in which the protagonist, narrator, and author are all similarly involved in the making of a fiction.

Abstract:The English Lover written by Hong Ying is apparently on the love temptation between Julian Bell and Ms. Min,while its deep theme is the cultural temptation of the other. In this novel, Julian Bell got a "beautiful, Chinese, Oriental" cultural imagination with the help of Ms. Min’s Chinese eyes. At the same time, he also became Ms. Min’s western eye through which she was tempted to imagine and appreciate western culture. The sex description in this novel has various cultural metaphors, because the love relation between the hero and heroine indicates the cross-cultural relation. As a successful text of cross-cultural communication and imagination, the novel enriches our understanding and interpreting of the Sino-British cultural exchange in 1930s. Both the writing strategy and its inner cultural value couldn’t be ignored.

Abstract:In the wake of the rebellion led by An Lushan and Shi Siming in the middle Tang dynasty,great changes took place in women' ideas and status,which exerted a deep and far-reaching influence on the production and reception of the romance novels in the Tang dynasty.Against this social background,two narrative versions differing in Miss Liu's identity appeared during the spread of the story about Han Hong and Miss Liu,which revealed the tendency of depicting female characters as prostitutes in the romance novels in the middle and late Tang dynasty.This being the focus of our attention,this paper makes a comparative study on similar stories and tries to further uncover the social cause for the "scholar-prostitute" pattern as common practice in the stories about handsome scholars and pretty girls in the Tang dynasty.

The Nude, Essence and Desire: Revisiting Chinese and Western Views of the Nude with François Jullien and Giorgio Agamben

Abstract:François Jullien believes that the pillar of Western nude art is the philosophical concepts of essence and ideal, while the benti (the Chinese counterpart of ontology) view of Chinese philosophy emphasizes change and process; therefore, it is impossible for Chinese painting to see the nude as essence. Jullien excludes works such as Chungong paintings (Chinese Spring Palace paintings) from the category of nude art because he holds that they depict nakedness, namely the process from "being dressed" to "being naked," rather than the nude, the natural state of being naked. However, Giorgio Agamben draws on the Christian view of the nude to point out that the nude is always relative to revelation–what exists only is the state of nakedness, while the nude never exists. Nakedness is attached to "undressing," which is endless because desire is endless. Noticeably, Agamben introduces the dimension of desire into the discussion of nude art, which has successfully created a comparative ground for Chinese and Western nude art. The sexual relationships depicted in Chungong paintings embody the Chinese view of the body and the universe, sharing a similar view in the theme of desire as in Western paintings. Thus, with the inclusion of desire, works such as Chungong paintings shall also be considered in transcultural reflections on artistic traditions between East and West.

Abstract:During Japanese occupied period in Shanghai,a large number of new romance novels written by the Writerswere published in the popular magazines as Wanxiang,Chunqiu,etc. These trivial and delicate romances present Miss Writers' view of love and their ethical ideal which are contrary to the secular lust as well as manifest the modern intellectual women's pathetic acknowledgement of their emotional fate and their suspicions and fears of modern marriage. These works also reveal the complexity of women liberation movement since the May 4th Movement of 1919.
Remapping Emotion and Desire: Same-Sex Romance in Ah Cheng's "The King of Chess"

Abstract:This article examines the representation of emotion and desire in Ah Cheng's The King of Chess (Qi wang). The interpretation of The King of Chess has been oriented toward an allegorical reading that revolves around grand cultural concepts, such as aesthetics, Taoist tradition, cultural consciousness, and national identity. In this paradigm of reading, the literary text has largely become a footnote of the master narrative of China's cultural reconstruction of the 1980s. Following the recent interpretative turn of this story from cultural to existential and from allegorical to corporeal, the article extends to yet another domain, that of emotion, intimacy, and desire, which is rarely addressed but crucial to further understanding the text. My analysis illuminates an account of same-sex romance in this novella. In analyzing the homoerotic narrative, this article explores how Ah Cheng's writing constitutes a counter-narrative to some dominant ideas concerning the world of emotion and desire under Maoism. Transcending the overfamiliar double image of either the political passion of activists or the emotional distress of underdogs, Ah Cheng's work calls for a rethinking of the domain of emotion and desire of that era in diverse forms, especially the nonconventional ones that may have existed but have been ruled out. The discourse of same-sex romance in Ah Cheng's The King of Chess ultimately delivers a subtle criticism of the Cultural Revolution whose hyperbolically political grand narratives facilely dismissed human desire into subtraction, abstraction, and disposal.

Abstract:The authors investigate coming out and coming home as models of queer sexuality for contemporary Chinese queer subjects. Through semi-structured interviews with 13 Chinese queer subjects, the authors investigate the distinctness of the coming-out and coming-home models, their points of dissonance and consonance, and the ways in which queer subjects take them up (partially or fully, temporarily or enduringly), revise them, or reject them. Finding that interview narratives exceed the normative parameters shaped by these two models, the authors elaborate a third, distinct model—coming with—which better accounts for how some contemporary Chinese queer subjects are crafting livable lives.
Desire and Asian Diasporic Fiction: Democracy and the Representative Status of Onoto Watanna’s Miss Numè of Japan (1899)

Abstract:Abstract “Onoto Watanna,” the pseudo-Japanese penname of the mixed-race Chinese Winnifred Eaton, acts as a “Bad Grandma” of the Asian North American literary tradition. Building upon Susan Koshy’s and Lisa Lowe’s accounts of the Asian American novel, I approach Watanna’s Miss Numè of Japan (1899) as the “first Asian American novel” representative of an accommodationist, rather than resistant, tendency “Asian American” representation that anticipates the aggregate and disaggregate problems and possibilities of that political formation in US liberal democracy. The novel, a tale of interracial romances set in Japan, tracks the uncomfortable tensions and convergences of desire and Asian diasporic fiction that speaks to the heteronormative bourgeois construction of anti-Black settler colonial “Asian America.” By tapping into the seduction and marriage plot traditions of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century (white) domestic fiction, Miss Numè racially recodes the genre’s processes of meaning-making about freedom, coercion, and material stability onto a comparative global stage. The romances allegorize negotiations between Japan and the US as two rising global imperialist powers, asymmetries of power coded as Asiatic racialized gender. Miss Numè traces fantasies of individualist desire inextricable from the novel’s status as a compromised origin for the Asian American novel and Asian Americanist coalitional politics.With this “bad” early entry in the Asian American literary tradition, the beginnings of a cross-ethnic Asian sensibility reveals the bourgeois fantasies of diasporic desire at its very emergence, not as a postlapsarian ossification.

Abstract:In this paper, I hermeneutically scrutinise a 1995 award-winning masterpiece The Song of Everlasting Sorrow and investigate its homosexual motif that lacks sufficient critical analysis. The author Wang Anyi features emotional and erotic entanglements between an archetypal yet extraordinary Shanghai woman Wang Qiyao and an array of male characters. I propound that apart from the protagonist’s unceasing melancholia, as illuminated by the title, the narrative also concerns lifelong dolorousness of two female supporting characters, viz. Wu Peizhen and Jiang Lili, both of whom establish bonds with Qiyao at puberty. I postulate that analogous to schoolgirls depicted by Ailing Zhang, Peizhen and Lili demonstrate same-sex adoration of Qiyao, yet disparate from spurious, proto- or quasi-homosexuality portrayed in Zhang’s writing, their zealousness and loyalty to Qiyao are not fugacious. Moreover, Peizhen’s perpetual animation is also inextricably intertwined with acrimony triggered by her failed pursuit of heterosexual romance with Qiyao’s committed admirer, leading to Peizhen’s unremitting self-mutilation and self-banishment.

Abstract:The most concerned question is the sexual difference in the narration of fiction.A new methodology is practiced in the essay,which is the dual research supported by the narrative theory and gender study.There are three aspects analyzed based on the two short stories.One is accomplished by a female writer and the other is by a male novelist.The sexual difference shows different sexual consciousness in the composing,and the different description about the sex in the plots expresses different attitude and imagination.Finally,the style difference,which exists in the very endings,could be summed up for the many effects caused by the sexual difference.
