Abstract:Nano-spinel ferrites synthesized via chemical co-precipitation method are small in size and have serious agglomeration phenomenon, which makes separation difficult in the subsequent process. Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4 ferrites nanoparticles were synthesized via co-precipitation assisted with ultrasonic irradiation produced by ultrasonic cleaner with 20 kHz frequency using chlorinated salts and KOH as initial materials. The effects of ultrasonic power (0, 40 W, 60 W, 80 W) and reaction temperature on the microstructure and magnetic properties of ferrite nanoparticles were investigated. The structure analyses via XRD revealed the successful formation of pure (NiCuZn)Fe2O4 ferrites nanospinel without any impurity. The crystallites sizes were less than 40 nm and the lattice constant was near 8.39 Å. The TEM showed ferrite particle polygonal. M-H analyses performed the saturation magnetization and coercivity of ferrite nanoparticles obtained at the reaction temperature of 25℃ were higher than at 50℃ with same power. The samples exhibited the highest values of Ms 55.67 emu/g at 25℃ and 47.77 emu/g at 50℃ for 60 W and the lowest values of Hc 71.23 Oe at 25℃ for 40 W and 52.85 Oe at 50℃ for 60 W. The squareness ratio (SQR) were found to be lower than 0.5, which revealed the single magnetic domain nature (NiCuZn)Fe2O4 nanoparticles. All the outcomes show the ultrasonic irradiation has positive effects on improving the microstructure and increasing magnetic properties.

Abstract:Fe–Ni nanoparticles have been synthesized via a nonaqueous solution-phase approach using thermal decomposition of Ni(II) acetylacetonate and Fe(III) acetylacetonate in oleylamine without further reducing agents. The analyses of powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show that the as-synthesized Fe–Ni nanoparticles possess a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystalline structure and exhibit a polydispersed characteristic. The particle morphology and size distribution can be further controlled by introducing surfactants in the reaction system, and the final chemical composition also can be tuned to some extent by varying the initial molar ratios of metal precursors. Room temperature magnetic measurements reveal a ferromagnetic characteristic for the as-synthesized nanoparticles. An increased saturation magnetization has been observed with increasing Fe contents.

Abstract:(NiCuZn)Fe2O4 ferrite is a kind of soft magnetic material widely used in multilayer chip inductors because of its high resistivity and excellent magnetic properties at high frequencies. In this study, (Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4)Fe2O4 ferrite powder was prepared by ultrasonic-assisted chemical co-precipitation method, the effect of calcination temperature on the structure and properties of ferrite powders was investigated by modern analytical methods that include differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer, respectively. The results show that the grain size increased from 23.5 nm to 38.6 nm and the lattice size increased from 8.384 Å to 8.390 Å with the increase of calcination temperature from 600°C to 900°C. The TEM shows that the powder particle was uniform and dispersible, and the particle size was about 30nm at 800°C calcination. The saturation magnetization of ferrite powder increases from 45.85emu/g to 50.65emu/g and the coercivity decreases from 65.50Oe to 46.23Oe with the increase of calcination temperature from 700°C to 900°C. The uniform and fine nano-crystalline ferrite particles would reduce the sintering temperature and improve the stability of the properties for spinel ferrite. The preparation of nano-spinel ferrite by ultrasonic-assisted co-precipitation is a worthy wet process for application.

Abstract:Effects of Bi2O3 addition and ball-milling time on the electrochemical performance of the ball-milled La2Mg17+200wt.% Ni composites in 6M KOH aqueous solution were investigated. The electrode characteristics of mechanically ground composites of La2Mg17+200wt.% Ni with and without 1wt.% Bi2O3 were examined such as discharge capacity, high-rate dischargeability and cycle life. It is demonstrated that for the original ball-milled composites, the high-rate dischargeability and cycling stability improved with the increase of ball-milling time, but the discharge capacity was just on the contrary. However, when the composites ball-milled with 1wt.% Bi2O3 for different times, the effect on the discharge capacity, high-rate dischargeability and cycling stability can be very different depending on the mechanical grinding time.

Abstract:Solid solutions of SnO2 in alpha-Fe2O3 with SnO2 contents up to 20 +/- 4 mol% have been prepared by mechanical alloying of alpha-Fe2O3 and SnO2 powder blends. X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy investigations show that the mechanical milling results in alloying on an atomic scale and that true solid solution formation occurs. We suggest that the high defect concentration and the chemical enthalpy of Fe3+-O2--Sn4+ interfaces between nanostructured alpha-Fe2O3 and SnO2 regions may serve as a driving force for the formation of a solid solution in the immiscible ceramic system.

Abstract:Since it offers high specific strength and superior corrosion resistance, nanocrystalline Ni deposits have attracted much attention as a brand-new functional coating used in electrocatalysis and high-temperature oxidation resistance devices. Herein two-directional of horizontal (UF1: 70 kHz) and vertical (UF2: 25 kHz) ultrasonic fields was designed for Ni deposits, establishing the correlation between grain size-dependent micro structures and properties of Ni nanocrystals under the varying ultrasound frequency (UF) from 0 to 70 kHz, respectively. Under the action of two-directional ultrasonic micro jets, the electroplating dendrites along the directional of electric-field density line was sufficiently crushed by impulse waves in UF1, followed by ultrasonic-shattering smaller grains that returned into growing sites for layer-by-layer epitaxial growth in vertical (UF2), resulting in effects of “nucleation and increments”. Experimental evidences indicated that the surface toughness of Ni deposits had great improved under a varied UF value of 25 + 70 kHz (in a ratio of 2:5). The largest Young’s modulus (Er) and hardness (HП) value of ~ 22.4 and 198.6 GPa were tested for Ni deposits at 25 + 70 kHz, and followed by a single UF value at 25, 75 and 0 kHz, which was ascribed to such structural modifications and refinement effects by ultrasound disruptions. With an increasing UF from 25 into 70 kHz, structural alterations converted from elliptical-like compact structure into unidirectional columnar with terrace-like textures of Ni deposits. As predicted, the diversified orientations like Ni (220) (200) and (311) plane were transformed from the close-packed Ni (111) plane in fcc-Ni deposits. Besides a lowest friction coefficient of ~ 0.25 was recorded for Ni deposits at UF 25 + 75 kHz without lubricants, reducing by 1.5 times relative to that of Ni sample without ultrasound field. The ultrasound-shattering mechanisms involved in the crystallographic textures and ionic polarization of Ni nanocrystals were explored in detail.Graphic abstract

Abstract:This study focuses on converting iron particles from grinding sludge, after removing impurities, into Fe-nanoparticles using high-energy ball billing. The goal is to examine the corrosion behaviors and mechanical properties of these Fe-nanoparticles. Nanostructured Fe-powder was synthesized through a process involving 10 h of high-energy ball milling, followed by conventional hot pressing and sintering. Structural and microstructural properties were thoroughly examined using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and elemental diffraction spectroscopy. Upon sintering, SEM and TEM analyses unveiled the formation of a nanostructured alloy within the samples. Notably, the milled sample exhibited high hardness value, measuring at 155 HV. However, it is noteworthy that the un-milled sample demonstrated superior compression strength compared to its milled counterpart. Furthermore, the corrosion behavior of the samples was evaluated through electrochemical corrosion studies. Interestingly, the sample subjected to 10 h of milling (coin number 5) displayed a significantly lower corrosion rate, measuring at 1.3921 mm/year, suggesting enhanced corrosion resistance attributed to the nano structuring process.

Abstract:This study examined the effect of milling parameters on the development of Ni/Al2O3 nanocomposites and refinement of NiO and Al powders. Ball milling of certain mixtures was followed by sintering at 800 and 1100 ?C for 2 h. The X-ray diffraction results of the dry-milled powders indicated that increasing the ball-to-powder weight ratio from 20:1 to 42:1 produced finer particles, resulting in the synthesis of Ni/Al2O3 nanocomposites by milling at 200 rpm for 1.5 h. Extending the milling duration at lower rotational speeds yielded powders with nanoscale particle sizes. However, as observed under scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, a metallic matrix nanocomposite was formed via the mechanochemical reaction, and the crystallite size was estimated using the Williamson-Hall plot. Furthermore, using differential scanning calorimetry plots, we analysed the effect of milling on the temperatures of phase transformation and/or reduction reactions. The tribological performance of the developed nickel metal matrix composite was examined by employing a ball-on-disc tribometer at various load conditions. Indeed, the friction coefficient increases with applied forces and decreases with milling. Comprehensive examinations of the worn surfaces were conducted through the utilization of a scanning electron microscope and a 3D optical profiler.

Abstract:Two-dimensional plate-like Fe3O4 nanocrystals and nanoparticles could be synthesized by a simple one-step sonochemical method through ultrasonic irradiation in reverse co-precipitation solution at low temperature. This technique provided a facile and rapid way to prepare Fe3O4 nanocrystals with different morphology and size. Magnetite nanoplates were synthesized with only ferrous salt adding into alkali solution, and adding ferric ions with low molar ratio in the metal salts solution would lead to the formation of very small magnetite nanoparticles (similar to 10 nm). The size of as-prepared magnetite nanopartieles increased with increasing reaction temperature and showed narrow size distribution, the standard deviation less than 2 nm. Abstract:NixCo1−xFe2O4 (x=0.2, 0.5, 0.8) particles were prepared by a self-designed method, i.e., microwave assisted ball milling. A series of characterizations were carried out on the prepared powders, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and vector network analyzer (VNA). XRD and TEM results indicated that the particles are well-crystallized and the average size is about 15nm. According to VSM results, the Ms values are 76emu/gm, 61emu/gm and 46emu/gm respectively, which obviously presented higher saturation magnetization values compared with other existing methods. Complex permittivity and permeability of Ni–Co ferrites were explored by VNA in the frequency of 2–18GHz, and the reflection loss (RL) was also calculated. The results illustrated that the minimum reflection loss values of the three ferrites all emerged in the range of 9–12GHz, and the Ni0.8Co0.2Fe2O4 with a thickness of 2.5mm could achieve −36.2dB at 11.52GHz, which indicated that the Ni–Co ferrite nanoparticles possessed great potential in microwave absorption applications.

Abstract:Rare-earth oxides Ln(2)O(3) (Ln = La, Ce) ultrafine nano suspensions in pure water were prepared by a high energy ball-milling technique. The effects of ball milling time and rotating speed on the stability of suspensions and particles structure were investigated. Increasing the ball-milling time and rotating speed is in favor of improving the stability of suspensions. The size, distribution and surface charge characteristics of particle in suspensions maybe the important factors for stability of suspensions. These suspensions have excellent stability, high concentration, high surface tension and low viscosity.

Abstract:We prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles using chemical coprecipitation and studied the factors affecting the magnetic characteristics of nano-Fe3O4 particles. We identified four factors and three levels of an orthogonal experiment and investigated these four factors that affect the magnetic characteristics of the Fe3O4 particles. We obtained important information from this investigation. The Fe3+ to Fe2+ molar ratio, the iron precursor salt, the amount of surfactant and the amount of alkali were found to be important. We also studied the influence of the order of alkali and surfactant addition, the aging time and the stirring speed on the magnetic characteristics of the nano-Fe3O4 particles. The Fe3O4 preparation process was also analyzed.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of varied nickel content levels (ranging from 0 to 20 wt%) and annealing temperatures (ranging from 300 to 600 °C) on the magnetic and structural characteristics of nanostructured FeCu alloys. The nanostructured alloys were synthesized using high-energy ball milling, followed by annealing in a controlled atmosphere. The structural evolution and phase formation were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), revealing the presence of a bimodal nanocrystalline structure. Magnetic properties were characterized using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), showing that an increase in nickel content enhances the saturation magnetization, reaching a maximum at 15-wt% Ni. Additionally, higher annealing temperatures lead to reduced grain size and increased magnetic coercivity. These findings underscore the substantial influence of nickel content and annealing temperature control on the magnetic and structural attributes of nanostructured FeCu alloys. The results not only contribute to a better understanding of the fundamental properties of these alloys but also highlight their potential utility in diverse technological applications, such as magnetic sensors, data storage devices, and magnetic shielding materials.

Abstract:The nanosized mixture powders of ferric oxide and nickel oxide prepared by the coprecipitation in a stoichiometric ratio to form NiFe2O4 were subjected to shock wave treatment. The nanosized nickel ferrites with different particle sizes were synthesized by means of varying initial packing density of the mixture. Compared with nickel ferrite prepared by conventional calcination, the magnetization of ones by shock wave treatment increases significantly. It is believed that shock wave treatment is a novel method for the preparation of nanosized powders of composite metal oxides with particular physical properties.

Abstract:The process of mechanical alloying and the phase transformations that accompany ball-milling Cu and Zn powder mixtures have been investigated by Cu-63 NMR spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. Ball-milling the Cu Zn powder mixtures influences all of the Cu-63 NMR spectral parameters. Compared with the results of X-ray diffraction, the Cu-63 NMR analysis is more sensitive to the subtle microstructural changes of the Cu-Zn powder mixtures during mechanical alloying. Based on the elemental principles of NMR in metals, some valuable conclusions related to the alloying reaction at the microscopic level have been drawn. The present work has proved the applicability of NMR analysis to investigate solid-state reactions induced by mechanical alloying.

Abstract:In this work, a new two-stage scalable method for the synthesis of magnetite nanoparticles for biomedical applications is proposed. The influence of the milling time, medium, and surfactants on the formation of the structure, magnetic, and functional properties of magnetite nanoparticles has been studied. Comprehensive investigation of the formation of the structure and properties of magnetite nanoparticles has been carried out using X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, measurements of magnetic properties, specific loss power (SLP), and cytotoxicity. It was shown that the milling medium of water with the addition of trisodium citrate is a harsher milling condition compared to octadecene-1 with the addition of oleic acid. Continuous milling for 50 h allowed to obtain a fraction of colloidally stable nanoparticles at the level of 80–90%. Harsher milling conditions led to the formation of a larger fraction of superparamagnetic particles, which reduced the coercivity and SLP. The maximum SLP value of 1140 W/g was reached by large particles, while nanoparticles had decreased SLP values of 100–190 W/g, which was completely determined by the coercivity dependence. Different synthesis conditions allowed obtaining particles with different cytotoxicity against PC-3 cells.

Abstract:This study focuses on the preparation and characterization of nanocrystalline Fe-A (Ni, Co, and Si) alloy powders using mechanical alloying technique with Retsch PM 400 high energy planetary ball mill. The evolution of the phases and magnetic properties of the powders are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) as a function of grinding time. The XRD results indicate that after 20 hours of milling, the FeNi, FeCo, and FeSi phases are completely formed. The lattice deformation of FeSi alloy is 0.7%, and the grain size decreases to 17 nm, 13.5 nm, and 10 nm for FeNi, FeCo, and FeSi, respectively. SEM observations of the powder morphologies at different stages of alloy formation are also conducted. Moreover, elemental maps of Fe, Ni, Co, and Si obtained by EDS experiments confirme the XRD results on the evolution of the alloy formation. Finally, the VSM results showed that the magnetic properties of FeNi, FeCo, and FeSi alloy nanoparticles are influenced by the composition, size, and morphology of the particles. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the preparation and characterization of nanocrystalline Fe-A (Ni, Co, and Si) alloy powders, which may have potential applications in various fields.

Abstract:The property of nickel powders was researched prepared in organic ethylene glycol solutions under ul- trasonic field.The elements of nickel powders were analyzed by the X-ray diffraction and the micro-morphology was characterized with scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.Cyclic voltammetry experiments were done on nickel electrodes.It was showed that the particle parameter of the nickel powders was smaller and the dispersion was better prepared in ultrasonic field compared to without ultrasonic field.Nickel e- lectrodes were prepared by pressing powders prepared in ultrasonic field and the experiments of cyclic voltam- metry were done in the lmol/L KOH solutions containing ethanol.Compared to without containing ethanol,oxi- dation peak current was bigger,but reduction peak current was smaller.This showed that nickel powders pro- duced under ultrasonic field was a better catalyst for ethanol's oxidation-reduction reaction.Then compared to pure nickel block electrodes,nickel nanopowders electrodes had higher electrochemical activities.

Abstract:In high energy ball milling process, the milling environment plays an important role on tailoring the microstructure and properties of metal powder. The refining behavior regarding ball milling of Ni powder in different atmospheres (air and argon gas) is investigated in this study. We find that the Ni powder is coarsened (from 28.4 ± 0.5 μm to 38.5 ± 13.9 μm) after milling in argon gas for 16 h. By contrast, its grain size and particle size are smaller than 20 nm and 2 μm respectively after milling in air. By analyzing the morphology and the chemical composition of the milled powders, the effect of different environments, including ambient air, dry air, and ambient air with ethanol, on ball milling process was investigated. The adsorption of oxygen is believed to play a key role in the refinement of Ni powder. The results provide a new insight into the environmental effect during ball milling, and lead to a new way for refining grain size and particle size of FCC metal powders in high energy ball milling.
