Abstract:Abstract The capacity that subjects have to rate confidence in their choices is a form of metacognition, and can be assessed according to bias, sensitivity and efficiency. Rich networks of domain-specific and domain-general regions of the brain are involved in the rating, and are associated with its quality and its use for regulating the processes of thinking and acting. Sensitivity and efficiency are often measured by quantities called meta–d′ and the M-ratio that are based on reverse engineering the potential accuracy of the original, primary, choice that is implied by the quality of the confidence judgements. Here, we advocate a straightforward measure of sensitivity, called meta–I, which assesses the mutual information between the accuracy of the subject’s choices and the confidence reports, and two normalized versions of this measure that quantify efficiency in different regimes. Unlike most other measures, meta–I-based quantities increase with the number of correctly assessed bins with which confidence is reported. We illustrate meta–I on data from a perceptual decision-making task, and via a simple form of simulated second-order metacognitive observer.

Abstract:Metacognition of emotion (meta-emotion) refers to the ability to evaluate and identify one's emotional feelings. No previous study has defined and measured this construct through objective and quantitative procedures. We established a reliable method to measure meta-emotion. With a two-interval forced-choice procedure, participants selected which of two pictures elicited stronger positive emotion; via the Law of Comparative Judgment, their responses were used to compute individual psychological distances for the emotional responses triggered by the pictures. Then, participants were asked to judge whether a pre-exposed picture induced a stronger positive emotion than the median of that elicited by the whole picture set, followed by a confidence rating. By utilizing each individual's psychological distance, the correctness of a participant's emotional experience was quantified by d ʹ, and meta-emotion was quantified using meta- d ʹ, M-ratio , and M-diff as indices of metacognitive sensitivity and efficiency based on Signal-Detection Theory. Test–retest reliabilities, validated by Spearman correlation, were observed in meta- d ʹ, M-ratio, and marginally with M-diff , suggesting the stability of meta-emotion in the current design This study unveils a validated procedure to quantify meta-emotion, extendable for assessing metacognition of other subjective feelings. Nevertheless, caution is warranted in interpretation, as the measured processes may be influenced by non-metacognitive factors.

Abstract:Theories of visual confidence have largely been grounded in the gaussian signal detection framework. This framework is so dominant that idiosyncratic consequences from this distributional assumption have remained unappreciated. This article reports systematic comparisons of the gaussian signal detection framework to its logistic counterpart in the measurement of metacognitive accuracy. Because of the difference in their distribution kurtosis, these frameworks are found to provide different perspectives regarding the efficiency of confidence rating relative to objective decision (the logistic model intrinsically gives greater meta-d'/d' ratio than the gaussian model). These frameworks can also provide opposing conclusions regarding the metacognitive inefficiency along the internal evidence continuum (whether meta-d' is larger or smaller for higher levels of confidence). Previous theories developed on these lines of analysis may need to be revisited as the gaussian and logistic metacognitive models received somewhat equivalent support in our quantitative model comparisons. Despite these discrepancies, however, we found that across-condition or across-participant comparisons of metacognitive measures are relatively robust against the distributional assumptions, which provides much assurance to conventional research practice. We hope this article promotes the awareness for the significance of hidden modeling assumptions, contributing to the cumulative development of the relevant field.

Abstract:Deciding whether two face photographs depict the same person or not can be a challenging task, and there are substantial individual differences in face matching ability. Far less is known about differences in metacognitive ability; that is, how well people can estimate the quality of their own face matching judgements. The purpose of this Registered Report was to determine the relationship between first-order performance in a face matching task, and three metacognitive measures: metacognitive sensitivity (the information exploited by metacognition), metacognitive efficiency (the quality of metacognitive processing itself), and metacognitive bias (the overall tendency towards high or low confidence). Participants completed a 200-trial unfamiliar face matching task, providing a second-order (metacognitive) confidence rating after each first-order (cognitive) response. Cognitive performance and metacognitive sensitivity showed a substantial positive association (rs = .60), suggesting that they were based on overlapping information, with poorer performers having lower quality information available. Once these differences in the information available to metacognition were accounted for, the quality of metacognitive processing itself (metacognitive efficiency) did not vary systematically with cognitive performance (rs = .00). Moreover, poor performers were not less or more confident overall than good performers, as cognitive performance and metacognitive bias did not correlate significantly (rs = .11). These findings allow us to move beyond consideration of group-level insight and inform regarding individual differences in cognitive and metacognitive abilities.

Abstract:Metacognition monitoring is the ability to evaluate the cognitive process actively. L2 learners with high metacognition monitoring ability can better monitor reading processes and outcomes consciously, thus facilitating self-regulated learning and improving reading efficiency. Previous studies mostly used offline self-reports to examine the metacognition monitoring in static text reading by L2 learners. This study investigated the effects of different indicators of metacognition monitoring on L2 Chinese audiovisual comprehension by online confidence judgment and audiovisual comprehension tasks. Target measures of metacognition monitoring included absolute calibration accuracy based on video or test and relative calibration accuracy measured by Gamma or Spearman correlation coefficient. 38 intermediate-advanced Chinese learners participated in the study. Multiple regression analysis showed three main results. First, absolute calibration accuracy can significantly predict L2 Chinese audiovisual comprehension, while relative calibration accuracy has no significant effect. Second, the predictive effect of video-based absolute calibration accuracy is affected by the video difficulty, that is, the greater the video difficulty, the greater the impact on the performance of audiovisual comprehension. Third, the predictive effect of test-based absolute calibration accuracy is influenced by the language proficiency, specifically, the higher the L2 Chinese proficiency, the stronger the prediction on the performance of audiovisual comprehension. These results support a multidimensional view of metacognition monitoring by specifying how different indicators of metacognition monitoring may predict L2 Chinese audiovisual comprehension. The findings have important pedagogical implications for strategy training of metacognition monitoring and point to the necessity to take task difficulty and individual differences among learners into full consideration.

Abstract:Some aspects of human metacognition, such as the ability to consciously evaluate our beliefs and decisions, are hypothesized to be culturally acquired. However, direct evidence for this claim is lacking. As an initial step toward answering this question, here we examine differences in metacognitive performance between populations matched for occupation (students), income, demographics and general intelligence but drawn from 2 distinct cultural milieus (Beijing, China and London, U.K.). Chinese participants showed more efficient metacognitive evaluation of perceptual decision-making task performance compared to U.K. participants. These differences manifested in boosts to postdecisional processing following error trials, despite no differences in first-order performance. In a second experiment, we directly replicate these findings and show that a metacognitive advantage generalizes to a task that replaces postdecision evidence with equivalent social advice. Abstract:Adaptive behaviour depends on the ability to introspect accurately about one's own performance. Whether this metacognitive ability is supported by the same mechanisms across different tasks is unclear. We investigated the relationship between metacognition of visual perception and metacognition of visual short-term memory (VSTM). Experiments 1 and 2 required subjects to estimate the perceived or remembered orientation of a grating stimulus and rate their confidence. We observed strong positive correlations between individual differences in metacognitive accuracy between the two tasks. This relationship was not accounted for by individual differences in task performance or average confidence, and was present across two different metrics of metacognition and in both experiments. A model-based analysis of data from a third experiment showed that a cross-domain correlation only emerged when both tasks shared the same task-relevant stimulus feature. That is, metacognition for perception and VSTM were correlated when both tasks required orientation judgements, but not when the perceptual task was switched to require contrast judgements. In contrast with previous results comparing perception and long-term memory, which have largely provided evidence for domain-specific metacognitive processes, the current findings suggest that metacognition of visual perception and VSTM is supported by a domain-general metacognitive architecture, but only when both domains share the same task-relevant stimulus feature.
Measuring metacognition of direct and indirect parameters of voluntary movement.

Abstract:We can make exquisitely precise movements without the apparent need for conscious monitoring. But can we monitor the low-level movement parameters when prompted? And what are the mechanisms that allow us to monitor our movements? To answer these questions, we designed a semivirtual ball throwing task. On each trial, participants first threw a virtual ball by moving their arm (with or without visual feedback, or replayed from a previous trial) and then made a two-alternative forced choice on the resulting ball trajectory. They then rated their confidence in their decision. We measured metacognitive efficiency using meta-d′/d′ and compared it between different informational domains of the first-order task (motor, visuomotor or visual information alone), as well as between two different versions of the task based on different parameters of the movement: proximal (position of the arm) or distal (resulting trajectory of the ball thrown). We found that participants were able to monitor their performance based on distal motor information as well as when proximal information was available. Their metacognitive efficiency was also equally high in conditions with different sources of information available. The analysis of correlations across participants revealed an unexpected result: While metacognitive efficiency correlated between informational domains (which would indicate domain-generality of metacognition), it did not correlate across the different parameters of movement. We discuss possible sources of this discrepancy and argue that specific first-order task demands may play a crucial role in our metacognitive ability and should be considered when making inferences about domain-generality based on correlations. Abstract:Most of us have experienced moments when we could not recall some piece of information but felt that it was just out of reach. Research in metamemory has established that such judgments are often accurate; but what adaptive purpose do they serve? Here, we present an optimal model of how metacognitive monitoring (feeling of knowing) could dynamically inform metacognitive control of memory (the direction of retrieval efforts). In two experiments, we find that, consistent with the optimal model, people report having a stronger memory for targets they are likely to recall and direct their search efforts accordingly, cutting off the search when it is unlikely to succeed and prioritizing the search for stronger memories. Our results suggest that metamemory is indeed adaptive and motivate the development of process-level theories that account for the dynamic interplay between monitoring and control. The mismeasure of memory: When retrieval fluency is misleading as a metamnemonic index.

Abstract:The experiments address the degree to which retrieval fluency--the case with which information is accessed from long-term memory--guides and occasionally misleads metamnemonic judgments. In each of 3 experiments, participants' predictions of their own future recall performance were examined under conditions in which probability or speed of retrieval at one time or on one task is known to be negatively related to retrieval probability on a later task. Participants' predictions reflected retrieval fluency on the initial task in each case, which led to striking mismatches between their predicted and actual performance on the later tasks. The results suggest that retrieval fluency is a potent but not necessarily reliable source of information for metacognitive judgments. Aspects of the results suggest that a basis on which better and poorer rememberers differ is the degree to which certain memory dynamics are understood, such as the fleeting nature of recency effects and the consequences of an initial retrieval. The results have pedagogical as well as theoretical implications, particularly with respect to the education of subjective assessments of ongoing learning.

Abstract:I n the July 15 issue of Pediatric Blood & Cancer, MarecBerard et al. [1] reported the official, updated recommendations of the French National Federation of Cancer Centers regarding the use of erythropoietic stimulating agents (ESA) in children with cancer. These recommendations are updates of ones previously developed and published in 1999 and 2004. This is an important and timely statement given the recent FDA restrictions regarding approved use of these agents in adults in the US. The procedure used for this update started with a literature search for relevant publications regarding use of ESAs between November 2003 and February 2007. A multidisciplinary working group of experts critically reviewed the publications and draft guidelines were developed that included levels of evidence to support them, including expert opinion. This document was then peer-reviewed by independent experts, whose comments were incorporated into the final version of this document in December 2007. The recommendations were said to be based on evidence synthesis and ‘‘transparent’’ expert opinion. Four randomized controlled trials RCTs of ESA in children were identified [2–5]. These reports were evaluated for the number of patients studied, the follow-up period, the primary oncologic diagnoses, the baseline or study entry hemoglobin level, the dose and schedule of the ESA used, and the end points used to evaluate ESA effectiveness (hemoglobin changes, number of transfusions while on study drug, quality of life, toxicities, and survival). The authors concluded from evaluation of these trials, in combination with data analyzed previously from four earlier trials, that ESA use in anemic children with cancer: (1) promotes increased levels of hemoglobin; (2) reduces the need for blood transfusions; (3) does not appear to be associated with a significant risk of toxicity; (4) does not appear to improve the quality of life of such children; and (5) has no conclusive effect on overall survival. This led them to recommend that the systematic administration of ESAs is not recommended for the prevention or treatment of anemia in children with cancer and that the decision of whether to use an ESA must be made on a case-by-case basis, when there is a relative or absolute contraindication for transfusion. There are a number of weaknesses to this report, including: (1) some methods merely referenced or available only in French; (2) several published RCTs of ESA use in children with cancer that were apparently overlooked [6–10]; (3) inclusion of data from two reports that concern the same study (3,5); (4) a puzzling assignment of level of evidence for several of the published reports that are not in line with their own defined levels of evidence; and (5) a recommendation of the universal administration of ESAs intravenously (as apposed to subcutaneously) without any supporting data. Our initial response to some of their recommendations was one of surprise, and it stimulated us to review all the available data on this topic. In discussing their conclusions, we will group our comments according to some practical issues regarding ESA use in pediatric oncology: Is the hemoglobin level really consistently elevated with ESA use? Is the incidence of red cell transfusions truly reduced? Is the quality of life improved? Is the use of ESAs cost effective? Is there any evidence for increased tumor progression or relapse in children treated with ESAs?
Optimal metacognitive decision strategies in signal detection theory

Abstract:Signal detection theory (SDT) has long provided the field of psychology with a simple but powerful model of how observers make decisions under uncertainty. SDT can distinguish sensitivity from response bias and characterize optimal decision strategies. Whereas classical SDT pertains to "type 1" judgments about the world, recent work has extended SDT to quantify sensitivity for metacognitive or "type 2" judgments about one's own type 1 processing, e.g. confidence ratings. Here we further advance the application of SDT to the study of metacognition by providing a formal account of normative metacognitive decision strategies – i.e., type 2 (confidence) criterion setting – for ideal observers. Optimality is always defined relative to a given objective. We use SDT to derive formulae for optimal type 2 criteria under four distinct objectives: maximizing type 2 accuracy, maximizing type 2 reward, calibrating confidence to accuracy, and maximizing the difference between type 2 hit rate and false alarm rate. Where applicable, we consider these optimization contexts alongside their type 1 counterparts (e.g. maximizing type 1 accuracy) to deepen understanding. We examine the different strategies implied by these formulae and further consider how optimal type 2 criterion setting differs when metacognitive sensitivity deviates from SDT expectation. The theoretical framework provided here can be used to better understand the metacognitive decision strategies of real observers. Possible applications include characterizing observers' spontaneously chosen metacognitive decision strategies, assessing their ability to fine-tune metacognitive decision strategies to optimize a given outcome when instructed, determining over- or under-confidence relative to an optimal standard, and more. This framework opens new avenues for enriching our understanding of metacognition.

Children's confidence on mathematical equivalence and fraction problems

Abstract:Metacognition is how people think about their own thinking, and it includes children's confidence in their problem-solving solutions. We assessed children's metacognition in two areas of mathematics that are often plagued by misconceptions and often studied separately-mathematical equivalence (e.g., 3 + 4 = 5 +__) and fraction magnitude (e.g., 1/3 = 2/__). Specifically, we quantified children's metacognitive skills across these topics, examined whether these skills are topic-specific, and determined how these skills covary with domain-general executive functioning. A total of 80 elementary school children (Mage = 7.70 years, SD = 0.69) provided trial-by-trial performance data and confidence judgments on equivalence and fraction problems as well as assessments of executive function. Children's metacognitive skills were especially impaired when using incorrect strategies based on misconceptions, and we did not find robust evidence for cross-topic associations. We found modest associations between children's metacognitive skills and their working memory and inhibitory control. Findings have theoretical and practical implications for understanding which children struggle with these important mathematics concepts and why.

Abstract:Determining the psychological, computational, and neural bases of confidence and uncertainty holds promise for understanding foundational aspects of human metacognition. While a neuroscience of confidence has focused on the mechanisms underpinning subpersonal phenomena such as representations of uncertainty in the visual or motor system, metacognition research has been concerned with personal-level beliefs and knowledge about self-performance. I provide a road map for bridging this divide by focusing on a particular class of confidence computation: propositional confidence in one's own (hypothetical) decisions or actions. Propositional confidence is informed by the observer's models of the world and their cognitive system, which may be more or less accurate-thus explaining why metacognitive judgments are inferential and sometimes diverge from task performance. Disparate findings on the neural basis of uncertainty and performance monitoring are integrated into a common framework, and a new understanding of the locus of action of metacognitive interventions is developed. Abstract:We integrated choice valuation, response time, and subjective confidence to probe the quality of confidence in preferential decisions. We found that the anterior insula and dorsal medial prefrontal cortex are involved in encoding the quality of metacognitive deliberation during preference judgements. Humans regularly assess the quality of their judgements, which helps them adjust their behaviours. Metacognition is the ability to accurately evaluate one's own judgements, and it is assessed by comparing objective task performance with subjective confidence report in perceptual decisions. However, for preferential decisions, assessing metacognition in preference‐based decisions is difficult because it depends on subjective goals rather than the objective criterion. Here, we develop a new index that integrates choice, reaction time, and confidence report to quantify trial‐by‐trial metacognitive sensitivity in preference judgements. We found that the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the right anterior insular were more activated when participants made bad metacognitive evaluations. Our study suggests a crucial role of the dmPFC‐insula network in representing online metacognitive sensitivity in preferential decisions.

Abstract:The metacognitive sense of confidence can play a critical role in regulating decisionmaking. In particular, a lack of confidence can justify the explicit, potentially costly, instrumental acquisition of extra information that might resolve the underlying uncertainty. Recent work has suggested a statistically sophisticated tapestry behind the information governing both the making and monitoring of choices. Here, we extend this tapestry to reveal extra richness in the use of confidence for controlling information seeking. We thereby highlight how different models of metacognition can generate diverse relationships between action, confidence, and information search. More broadly, our work shows how crucial it can be to treat metacognitive monitoring and control together.
An automatic domain-general error signal is shared across tasks and predicts confidence in different sensory modalities

Abstract:Understanding the ability to self-evaluate decisions is an active area of research. This research has primarily focused on the neural correlates of self-evaluation during visual-tasks, and whether pre- or post-decisional neural correlates capture subjective confidence in that decision. This focus has been useful, yet also precludes an investigation of key every-day features of metacognitive self-evaluation: that decisions are rapid, must be evaluated without explicit feedback, and unfold in a multisensory world. These considerations lead us to hypothesise that an automatic domain-general metacognitive signal may be shared between sensory modalities, which we tested in the present study with multivariate decoding of electroencephalographic (EEG) data. Participants (N=21, 12 female) first performed a visual task with no request for self-evaluations of performance, prior to an auditory task that included rating decision confidence on each trial. A multivariate classifier trained to predict errors in the speeded visual-task generalised to predict errors in the subsequent non-speeded auditory discrimination. This generalisation was unique to classifiers trained on the visual response-locked data, and further predicted subjective confidence on the subsequent auditory task. This evidence of overlapping neural activity across the two tasks provides evidence for automatic encoding of confidence independent of any explicit request for metacognitive reports, and a shared basis for metacognitive evaluations across sensory modalities.

Abstract:How do people monitor the correctness of their answers? A self-consistency model is proposed for the process underlying confidence judgments and their accuracy. In answering a 2-alternative question, participants are assumed to retrieve a sample of representations of the question and base their confidence on the consistency with which the chosen answer is supported across representations. Confidence is modeled by analogy to the calculation of statistical level of confidence (SLC) in testing hypotheses about a population and represents the participant's assessment of the likelihood that a new sample will yield the same choice. Assuming that participants draw representations from a commonly shared item-specific population of representations, predictions were derived regarding the function relating confidence to inter-participant consensus and intra-participant consistency for the more preferred (majority) and the less preferred (minority) choices. The predicted pattern was confirmed for several different tasks. The confidence-accuracy relationship was shown to be a by-product of the consistency-correctness relationship: It is positive because the answers that are consistently chosen are generally correct, but negative when the wrong answers tend to be favored. The overconfidence bias stems from the reliability-validity discrepancy: Confidence monitors reliability (or self-consistency), but its accuracy is evaluated in calibration studies against correctness. Simulation and empirical results suggest that response speed is a frugal cue for self-consistency, and its validity depends on the validity of self-consistency in predicting performance. Another mnemonic cue-accessibility, which is the overall amount of information that comes to mind-makes an added, independent contribution. Self-consistency and accessibility may correspond to the 2 parameters that affect SLC: sample variance and sample size.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Metacognition, or the ability to accurately identify, appraise, and monitor one's deficits, is commonly impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Poor metacognition prevents correct appraisal of a range of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms and facilitates anosognosia, which has important clinical implications for individuals (e.g., diminished treatment adherence, increased engagement in high-risk situations) and caregivers (e.g., higher burden). However, the neural correlates of metacognitive disturbance are still debated in the literature, partly because of the subjective nature of traditional awareness measures.METHOD: An objective Feeling of Knowing (FOK) task was used to measure metamemory capacity in a group of cognitively diverse older adults, including 14 with mild to moderate AD and 20 cognitively healthy older adults. The association between three different objective metamemory measures of the FOK task and regional cortical thickness (12 bilateral regions of interest [ROIs] hypothesized to support self-awareness) was analyzed using partial correlations.RESULTS: Less accurate metamemory at the local and global levels was associated with reduced right posterior cingulate cortical thickness, r = -0.42, p = .02 and reduced right medial prefrontal, r = -0.39, p = .029, respectively.CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this was the first study to examine metacognition in relation to cortical thickness. Both global and local metamemory functions appear to rely on the integrity of right sided midline regions, known to be important for processing self-referential information. Findings are conceptualized with regard to the Default Mode Network, and also considered in relation to recent findings pointing to the right insula as a region critical for self-awareness. The effect of metacognitive training on confidence and strategic reminder setting

Abstract:Individuals often choose between remembering information using their own memory ability versus using external resources to reduce cognitive demand (i.e. 'cognitive offloading'). For example, to remember a future appointment an individual could choose to set a smartphone reminder or depend on their unaided memory ability. Previous studies investigating strategic reminder setting found that participants set more reminders than would be optimal, and this bias towards reminder-setting was predicted by metacognitive underconfidence in unaided memory ability. Due to the link between underconfidence in memory ability and excessive reminder setting, the aim of the current study was to investigate whether metacognitive training is an effective intervention to a) improve metacognitive judgment accuracy, and b) reduce bias in strategic offloading behaviour. Participants either received metacognitive training which involved making performance predictions and receiving feedback on judgment accuracy, or were part of a control group. As predicted, metacognitive training increased judgment accuracy: participants in the control group were significantly underconfident in their memory ability, whereas the experimental group showed no significant metacognitive bias. However, contrary to predictions, both experimental and control groups were significantly biased toward reminder-setting, and did not differ significantly. Therefore, reducing metacognitive bias was not sufficient to eliminate the bias towards reminders. We suggest that the reminder bias likely results in part from erroneous metacognitive evaluations, but that other factors such as a preference to avoid cognitive effort may also be relevant. Finding interventions to mitigate these factors could improve the adaptive use of external resources.
