Abstract:Twenty patients undergoing thoracotomy were given 2, 4, or 6 mg morphine epidurally in a double-blind, randomized study for postoperative analgesia. Administration at T12-L1 or L1-L2 resulted in a dose-related analgetic duration (514 ± 118 min, 778 ± 207 min, and 938 ± 155 min; means ± SEM, respectively, for the groups). For the three groups, peak plasma morphine concentrations (range 19–34 ng/ml) were reached within 15 min. The plasma curves had a similar appearance as after an intramuscular injection and pharmacokinetic calculations showed an elimination half-life (mean ± SEM) of 173 ± 24 min, 200 ± 60 min, and 213 ± 57 min for the groups, respectively. The morphine concentrations in the CSF were considerably higher compared with plasma (45–100 times the plasma concentration at 1 h, 100–250 times at 3 h, and 125–175 times at 5 h) but the elimination half-life of morphine in the cere-brospinal fluid (CSF) was similar to that in plasma. The lumbar approach was used with similar efficacy as reported for thoracic administration. Side effects were few and nonsignificant. The authors conclude that epidural morphine administration results in a dose-dependent analgesia, as well as concentrations in the CSF that are considerably higher than in plasma. With similar elimination half-lives for morphine in CSF and plasma, the long analgetic duration probably depends on the locally high morphine concentrations achieved. For safety purposes, one may use the lumbar approach to the epidural space even for thoracic pain without reducing the efficacy.

Abstract:The risks associated with night-time driving on dimly lit roads are substantial and are attributable to the limitations of human visual abilities. As a result, drivers often struggle to distinguish road geometry from ordinary road markings, thus increasing the likelihood of mistakes. These circumstances contribute to a 60 % higher likelihood of road crashes compared to daytime conditions. To mitigate these risks, active LED road studs, which previous studies have shown to have a positive influence on driving performance, can be used. However, there remains a gap in research regarding the optimal arrangement of these studs along road markings for an improvement in driver behaviour and traffic safety. In this study, we assessed the influence of five different LED road stud layouts (unlit, edge, centre, edge-centre, and lane) during night-time driving on two-lane rural highways with curves of different radii (120, 210, 300, 440 m) and directions (left, right). Following a within subject design, thirty-five participants drove in a simulator along a road track with 8 spiralled curves (4 radii × 2 directions) linked to straights. We monitored the longitudinal (i.e., speed), transversal (i.e., lateral position and standard deviation of lateral position) and gaze behaviours. Our findings indicate that the presence of LED road studs promotes safer driving, by helping drivers to adjust their speed when negotiating curves. Transversal behaviour analysis revealed layout-dependent effects on lateral position. The presence of road studs both at the lane centreline and edge allows drivers to maintain centred trajectories and improve steering control. Gaze behaviour analysis uncovered interesting patterns, demonstrating a strong correlation between road stud layout and the driver's focus on specific road targets. Illuminated markings prompt drivers to concentrate their gaze on distinct points, subsequently altering their transversal behaviour.

Abstract:Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is commonly used to enrich and maintain neural stem cells in vitro. Olig2 is an essential transcription factor for oligodendrocyte lineage specification and is expressed predominantly in ventral neuroepithelial cells in the medial and lateral ganglionic eminence (GE), where oligodendrocyte progenitors originate. Here we report significant induction of Olig2 expression in dorsal neuroepithelium‐derived cells cultured in the presence of bFGF, in which Olig2‐expressing cells were initially negligible. Among Olig2‐expressing cells appearing after a 5‐day treatment with bFGF, 99.8% coexpressed nestin. There was no significant difference in proliferation or apoptosis in dorsal and ventral neuroepithelial cultures in the presence of bFGF, suggesting that bFGF induces ectopic expression of Olig2 in dorsal “cortical” neuroepithelial cells. Similarly, expression of Mash1, another ventral neuroepithelial cell marker gene, was also induced in cultured dorsal neuroepithelial cells in the presence of bFGF. Conversely, in this culture, expression of dorsal neuroepithelial cell markers, such as Neurogenin1, Neurogenin2, Pax6, and Emx2, was down‐regulated. These results suggested a possible ventralizing activity of bFGF. In fact, bFGF‐treated dorsal neuroepithelial cells acquired the potential to generate O4‐positive oligodendrocytes with efficacy comparable to that observed with GE‐derived cells. In marked contrast, bFGF did not enable dorsal neuroepithelial cells to generate γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons, which normally develop only from GE in vivo. Thus, bFGF endows dorsal telencephalic neural progenitors with the ability to differentiate into oligodendrocytes but not GABAergic neurons, suggesting the presence of different mechanisms governing specification of dorsoventral cell identities of neuronal and glial cell lineages. © 2006 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

Abstract:Although dimming the light in tunnels brings salient benefits to energy saving, the effects of dimming-induced luminance changes on driving safety have been rarely explored. Adopting the visual performance experiment, the present study investigated the impacts of the dimming-induced luminance change rate (V) on the safety of driver’s perception, judgment, and operation in the threshold zone of the tunnel under different seasons and weather conditions. The results show that the reaction times (RTs), pupil area change rate (vp), and blink frequency (fb), increased with the increase of V. When the luminance before the beginning of dimming (L) was higher, drivers reacted faster and stood a lower level of the mental load and fatigue. Compared with decreasing the luminance through dimming, when increasing the luminance through dimming, the present study found that each of the visual performance indices was about 10% lower, and the changes with V became smaller. Based on the safety thresholds of RT, vp, and fb, the present study obtained the thresholds of V which can meet the safety requirements of driver’s perception, judgment, and operation. Finally, a theoretical model between the thresholds of V and L was developed, and this model will shed light on the control of V in the threshold zone of the tunnel under different seasons and weather conditions.
Intelligent speed adaptation for visibility technology affects drivers' speed selection along curves with sight limitations

Abstract:Sight obstructions along road curves can lead to a crash if the driver is not able to stop the vehicle in time. This is a particular issue along curves with limited available sight, where speed management is necessary to avoid unsafe situations (e.g., driving off the road or invading the other traffic lane). To solve this issue, we proposed a novel intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) system for visibility, called V-ISA (intelligent speed adaptation for visibility). It estimates the real-time safe speed limits based on the prevailing sight conditions. V-ISA comes with three variants with specific feedback modalities (1) visual and (2) auditory information, and (3) direct intervention to assume control over the vehicle speed. Here, we investigated the efficiency of each of the three V-ISA variants on driving speed choice and lateral behavioural response along road curves with limited and unsafe available sight distances, using a driving simulator. We also considered curve road geometry (curve direction: rightward vs. leftward). Sixty active drivers were recruited for the study. While half of them (experimental group) tested the three V-ISA variants (and a V-ISA off condition), the other half always drove with the V-ISA off (validation group). We used a linear mixed-effect model to evaluate the influence of V-ISA on driver behaviour. All V-ISA variants were efficient at reducing speeds at entrance points, with no discernible negative impact on driver lateral behaviour. On rightward curves, the V-ISA intervening variant appeared to be the most effective at adapting to sight limitations. Results of the current study implies that V-ISA might assist drivers to adjust their operating speed as per prevailing sight conditions and, consequently, establishes safer driving conditions.

Quantifying effects of reverse linear perspective as a visual cue on vehicle and platoon crash risk variations in car-following using path analysis

Abstract:Road markings are prevalent in practice as perceptual countermeasures to crashes, and a great deal of them have been used for speed reduction. However, there is rare seen any equivalent measures especially for distance control. More importantly, the visual perceptual mechanism of road markings on driving behaviors and crash risk is still blur. Given this, in the present study, we comprehensively quantified the effects of reverse linear perspective (RLP) from its origin as a visual cue, produced by a kind of transverse line markings on road, and explored the effects on car-following behaviors and crash risk variations by path analyses imbedded in a structural equations model, which was approximated with naturalistic driving and traffic flow data. In the model, multiple sources of observed factors in visual perception, driver behaviors, and traffic flow characteristics, and exogenous unobserved factors of distance risk perception, speed risk perception, and platoon risk status were comprehensively structured to explain the vehicle crash risk variation and the platoon crash risk variation. The results indicate that (1) distance risk perception, speed risk perception, and platoon risk status were well explanatory and predictive to vehicle crash risk variation and platoon crash risk variation; (2) the effects of reverse linear perspective as a visual cue on driving behaviors and crash risk variations in car-following were adequately quantified by its geometrical characteristics concerning distance perception; (3) the visual cue of reverse linear perspective in addition with initial distance, stopping sight distance, and the type of leading vehicles explained 33 % of the variance in distance risk perception; the temporal frequency, initial speed, and the type of following vehicles explained 23 % of the variance in speed risk perception; distance risk perception, speed risk perception, and platoon risk status combinedly explained 25 % and 22 % of the total variance in vehicle crash risk variation and platoon crash risk variation, respectively; (4) vehicle crash risk variation and platoon crash risk variation were equivalently specified by those observed explanatory factors. The findings of this study suggest the usefulness and importance of understanding the contribution of psychological factors on crash risk, and emphasize that the road markings can be an effective and readily practical countermeasure in easing traffic safety issues.
Effectiveness of Active Luminous Lane Markings on Highway at Night: A Driving Simulation Study

Abstract:Road lane markings play an essential role in maintaining traffic order and improving traffic safety and efficiency. Active luminous lane markings have emerged with advances in technology recently. However, it is still not completely clear what impact their application will have on drivers. This paper aimed to study the effectiveness of active luminous lane markings on highways at night. A driving simulation experiment was carried out based on advanced driving simulators at Tongji University. The driving simulation experiment involved 31 participants and 9 simulation scenes with 6 different types of lane markings models and the same 2-way highway segment, which was 5300-m long with four 3.75-m wide driving lanes. The study participants drove through the simulated highway while the vehicle operation data and the driver’s eyes changing data were continuously captured. Overall, the pupil area change rate, steering wheel speed, brake pedal force, gas pedal, lane departure, and operating speed indicators were selected to evaluate the effectiveness of the active luminous lane markings. The results are shown as follows: (1) the active luminous lane markings have excellent visual recognition performance at night. Compared with the passive luminous lane markings, the active luminous markings can reduce the mental and physical loads of drivers, increase the early braking distance significantly, improve the lane-keeping ability and smooth the operating speed; (2) for the specific parameter settings of the active luminous lane markings at night, the yellow lane markings are better than the white ones, the point-line-type lane markings are superior to the conventional-type ones, and the blinking frequency is reasonable to set, at a moderate level, as 40 times per min. The results suggest that there are positive effects of active luminous lane markings on the promotion of highway traffic safety and efficiency at night, providing theoretical support for the popularization and application of active luminous road lane markings.

Abstract:Introduction: Highly automated driving is expected to reduce the accident risk occurrence by human errors, but it can also increase driver distraction. Previous evidence shows that auditory signals can help drivers take over in critical situations. However, it is still uncertain whether the potential benefit of verbal auditory signals could be generalized to driving situations where drivers are visually and auditorily distracted. Method: Our first objective was to compare the effectiveness of complementary audio messages (audio + visual condition) and visual only (visual condition) variable message signs (VMS) messages. The second objective was to explore the potential use of oral messages with traffic information to help highly-automated vehicle drivers identify critical situations. Eye-tracking data were also registered. Twenty-four volunteers participated in a driving simulator study, completing two tasks: (a) a TV series task, where they had to pay attention to an episode of a TV series while traveling along the route; and (b) a VMS task, where they had to recover the manual control of the car if the VMS message was a ‘critical message.’ Results: General results showed that, when the audio was available, the participants: (a) had a higher ability to discriminate the VMS messages, (b) were less conservative, (c) responded earlier, and (d) their pattern of fixations was more efficient. A complementary analysis showed that the counterbalance order was a moderating factor for the discrimination ability and the response distance measures. This evidence suggests a potential learning effect, not cancelled by counterbalancing the order of the conditions. Conclusion: The processing of traffic messages may improve when provided as oral and visual messages. Practical Applications: These results would be of special interest for engineers designing highly automated cars, considering that the design of automated systems must ensure that the driver's attention is sufficient to take over control.

Does using a bioptic telescope improve visual recognition of the on-road environment?

Abstract:Significance: Individuals with reduced visual acuity (VA) may drive with bioptic telescopes in some jurisdictions. The effect of bioptic telescope use on on-road recognition distances is important for driving safety, as increased recognition distances increase the time available to react to road signs or driving events. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of bioptic telescope use on visual recognition of road signs, traffic lights, and hazards in an on-road driving environment in individuals with reduced VA. Methods: Ten individuals (mean ± standard deviation age, 39.1 ± 19.1 years) with reduced VA (trained to use bioptic telescopes) participated in a repeated-measures on-road experiment for two viewing conditions, with and without a bioptic telescope (randomized order). Participants underwent a clinical low vision assessment, including high-contrast VA with and without the bioptic telescope aligned, visual fields, and contrast sensitivity testing. For the driving component, participants seated in the front passenger seat of a moving car reported all road signs, traffic lights, and hazards (unpredictable road events that represent a risk to driving safety including other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians) seen along a route that included suburban roads and highways. Video cameras captured participants' viewing behavior, verbal commentary, and the distance at which three pre-selected road signs were reported. Results: In the eye with the bioptic telescope, high-contrast VA improved from 0.75 ± 0.17 (without) to 0.25 ± 0.1 logMAR with the bioptic telescope. Bioptic telescope use did not affect the percentage of road signs, traffic lights, or hazards correctly recognized but did result in 2.6 times longer recognition distances (49 ± 23 vs. 19 ± 11 m, t9 = 5.02, p<0.001). Conclusions: Road signs were recognized at significantly longer distances when using a bioptic telescope, confirming their positive impact on timely visual recognition of objects within the driving scene. Future work should explore whether this effect generalizes to individuals using bioptic telescopes when driving a vehicle.

Abstract:Driving speeds are higher on freeways, and the visibility reduction occurring in freeway fog zones often increases traffic accidents. This study aims at assessing the impact of different levels of connected vehicle fog warning systems on driving behavior and safety. A connected vehicle fog warning system is developed based on driving simulators, and virtual scenes are developed based on fog zones. The connected vehicle technology includes three levels: a normal level, a level including a human-machine interface, and a level with both a human-machine interface and dynamic message signs. Speed and lateral deviation are chosen as assessment indicators and combined with sample entropy to evaluate the impact of the connected vehicle fog warning system on safety. The deceleration ratio of the warning point is used to evaluate the efficiency of the connected vehicle fog warning system. Results show that the connected vehicle fog warning system can significantly reduce driving speed, and that there are differences in the speed-reduction effectiveness for different technical levels. The connected vehicle fog warning system can reduce the lateral deviation and improve the lateral driving safety. From the perspective of change stability, speed safety entropy and lateral deviation safety entropy are increased, which indicates that the connected vehicle fog warning system will negatively impact safety because of the additional workload. Drivers’ responses are more pronounced in the human-machine interface group compared to the group with dynamic message signs, where the drivers maintained a lower speed. This study provides a reference for the studies on connected vehicle technology based on driving simulators and supports the optimization, design, and evaluation of connected vehicle fog warning systems.

The effect of fog on detection of driving hazards after dark

Abstract:The presence of fog leads to an increase in road traffic accidents. An experiment was carried out using a scale model to investigate how the detection of hazards in peripheral vision was affected by changes in luminance (0.1 cd/m 2 and 1.0 cd/m 2 road surface luminance), scotopic/photopic (S/P) ratio (0.65 and 1.40) and fog density (none, thin and thick). Two hazards were used, a road surface obstacle and lane change of another vehicle. Increasing luminance, and reducing from thick to thin fog, led to significant increase in detection rate and a reduction in reaction time, for both types of hazard. The effect of a change in S/P ratio was significant only when measuring detection of the surface obstacle using reaction times, under the thick fog, with an increase in S/P ratio leading to a shorter reaction time.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of in-vehicle audio warning at flashing-light-controlled grade crossings based on driving simulation and eye-tracking systems. Background: Collisions at flashing-light-controlled grade crossings have severe consequences. In-vehicle audio warning has the potential to regulate driver behavior. However, whether this improvement occurs through priming drivers' visual search patterns is not yet clear. Method: Drivers' visual activity and behaviors were recorded. The effect of a warning was tested with a series of flashing light trigger times (FLTTs) ranging from 2s to 6s with a 1s increment. Different driving conditions (i.e., clear and fog) and driver experience were considered in the experiment design. Results: Warnings could guide the allocation of both overt and covert attention, as well as raise drivers' situation awareness, manifesting as the enhanced perception of signs and better understanding of the flashing red light. Significant improvement in the stop-compliance rate was found in warning scenarios, particularly with a late FLTT. The decreased saccade duration and increased fixation duration on the signal implied a dilemma-zone effect when the FLTT was lower than 4s. Furthermore, reduced fixation duration on signs and signals was found in foggy conditions. Non-professional drivers had a wider search range than their counterparts. Conclusion: In-vehicle audio warning is an effective countermeasure for improving crossing safety by optimizing visual search strategy. Application: In-vehicle audio warnings warrant promotion at grade crossings based on the driver assistance system.

Effect of expressway exit deceleration markings on distracted drivers in China

Abstract:Expressway exit areas experience traffic diversion and complex road conditions, making them accident-prone areas. In this study, transverse and fishbone visual illusion deceleration markings were selected to optimize the induction facilities at expressway exits. The research aims to investigate the impact of these markings on the driving behavior, cognitive load, and physiological characteristics of drivers in various distracted scenarios at expressway exit areas. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation of each experimental scheme is conducted using the Matter-Element Extension Model. The study found that the implementation of deceleration markings can effectively enhance driver alertness and lane change awareness, enabling drivers to reduce their speed to near the speed limit in exit areas without compromising driving comfort. Compared to the situation without markings, drivers begin to decelerate approximately 600 m earlier and exit the ramp when markings are present. Fishbone deceleration markings, in contrast to transverse markings, result in lower vehicle speeds, smoother deceleration, and more effectively stimulate drivers' intention to change lanes, guiding them to make the final lane change earlier. Based on the comprehensive evaluation results, it is recommended that transverse or fishbone deceleration markings be considered in engineering practice. These markings have not produced significant effects on driver visual fatigue and driving load, with fishbone markings demonstrating superior comprehensive evaluation outcomes. These research findings can provide valuable insights for future expressway exit area marking design schemes, further enhancing driver safety.
Evaluating current and future pedestrian mid-block crossing safety treatments using virtual reality simulation

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) simulation offers a proactive, cost effective, immersive, and low risk platform for studying pedestrian safety. Within immersive virtual environments (IVEs), existing and alternative design conditions and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies can be directly compared, prior to real-world implementation, to assess the impacts alternatives may have on pedestrian safety, perception, and behavior. Environmental factors can be controlled within IVEs so that test trials are replicable and directly comparable. Coupled with stated preference feedback, participants' observed preferences and behavior provide a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of proposed design alternatives. This research presents a case study of pedestrian behavior with three different mid-block crossing safety treatments modeled within a one-to-one scale IVE replication of a real-world location in Charlottesville, Virginia. The three safety treatments consider both passive and active collision avoidance designs and technologies, including (1) the existing painted crosswalk, (2) the addition of rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs), and (3) a pedestrian to everything (P2X) ITS phone application. Additionally, this paper demonstrates a VR simulation experimental design and framework for testing pedestrian safety treatments within naturalistic and replicable IVEs to assess both stated and observed preferences and behaviors of pedestrians. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated changes in both accepted gap size (p = 0.001) and crossing speed (p < 0.001) with alternative safety treatments. Generalized mixed models showed that pedestrians waited for statistically larger gap sizes (p = 0.02) without the assistance of alternative safety technologies (RRFBs and P2X application) and pedestrians crossed the street significantly faster (p = 0.001) without the alternative safety technologies, leading to unsafe dashing behavior. Through post-experiment surveys, it was found that participants perceived the As Built environment to be the least safe of the three treatments and that their sense of risk within the IVE was realistic. Considering both the observed crossing behavior and stated feedback, pedestrians exhibited intentionally unsafe darting behavior without assistive safety technology. This study demonstrates how VR simulation may be leveraged to study both stated preferences and observed behavior for understanding the safety implications of alternative roadway designs, providing a proactive approach for assessing and designing for pedestrian safety.
The effects of brief visual interruption tasks on drivers' ability to resume their visual search for a pre-cued hazard

Abstract:Driver visual distraction is known to increase the likelihood of being involved in a crash, especially for long glances inside the vehicle. The detrimental impact of these in-vehicle glances may carry over and disrupt the ongoing processing of information after the driver glances back up on the road. This study explored the effect of different types of visual tasks inside the vehicle on the top-down processes that guide the detection and monitoring of road hazards after the driver glances back towards the road. Using a driving simulator, 56 participants were monitored with an eye tracking system while they navigated various hazardous scenarios in one of four experimental conditions. In all conditions, a potential hazard was visible 4-5s before the driver could strike the potential hazard were it to materialize. All interruptions were exactly two seconds in length. After the interruption the potential hazard again became visible for about a half-second after which the driver passed by the hazard. The nature of the in-vehicle visual interruption presented to the participants was varied across conditions: (1) Visual interruptions comprised of spatial, driving unrelated, tasks; (2) visual interruptions comprised of non-spatial, driving unrelated, tasks; (3) visual interruptions with no tasks added; and (4) no visual interruptions. In the first three conditions drivers glancing on the forward roadway was momentarily interrupted (either with or without a task) just after the potential hazard first became visible by the occurrence of an in-vehicle task lasting two seconds. In the last condition (no interruptions) the driver could not see the potential hazard after it just became visible because of obstructions in the built or natural environment. The obstruction (like the interruption) lasted for two seconds. In other words, across all conditions the hazard was visible, then became invisible, and finally became visible again. Importantly, the results show that the presence of an interruption (as opposed to an obstruction) negatively impacted drivers' ability to anticipate the potential hazard. Moreover, the various types of interruptions had differential effects on hazard detection. The implications of this study for the design of in-vehicle displays are discussed.
Effect of Visual Instruction on Drivers' Reaction Pattern in Lateral Conflicts.

Abstract:Side-impact accident is the most common form of traffic accident in China and contributes the most fatalities. Driver factor is widely believed to be the main causation of those accidents. During lateral conflicts at intersections, braking with same-direction-swerving are used too often by drivers under many inappropriate conditions, resulting in traffic accidents which could have been avoided. In this driving simulation study, arrow-shaped visual instructions are displayed in front of drivers, in order to guide them and reduce their dangerous avoidance reaction pattern described above. Firstly, in pretest, subjects' natural emergency avoidance behavior during intersection conflicts was tested without any instructions; Later, in posttest, arrow-shaped visual instructions were shown in front of subjects when conflicts were triggered; Finally, one month later, drivers were asked to attend a tracking test with the same visual instructions displayed. Result shows that without instruction, subjects prefer to use braking and same-direction-swerving irrationally in lateral conflicts. Although such pattern is not helpful for avoiding crashes, they didn't manage to correct themselves during trials. In posttest, arrow-guidance is found significantly helpful for drivers to make better longitudinal and lateral avoidance choices. However, positive impact of visual instruction drops significantly in tracking test one month later. Learning effect is observed among trials in both posttest and tracking test. This study provides a data basis for driver's decision-making mechanism research under conflict conditions, and could be used for future intelligent connected vehicles' human-machine interaction design as well as collision-avoidance system development.
On-road experiment to assess drivers' detection of roadside targets as a function of headlight system, target placement, and target reflectance

Abstract:Adaptive headlights swivel with steering input to keep the beams on the roadway as drivers negotiate curves. To assess the effects of this feature on driver's visual performance, a field experiment was conducted at night on a rural, unlit, and unlined two-lane road during which 20 adult participant drivers searched a set of 60 targets. High- (n=30) and low- (n=30) reflectance targets were evenly distributed on straight road sections and on the inside or outside of curves. Participants completed three target detection trials: once with adaptive high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, once with fixed HID headlights, and once with fixed halogen headlights. Results indicated the adaptive HID headlights helped drivers detect targets that were most difficult to see (low reflectance) at the points in curves found by other researchers to be most crucial for successful navigation (inside apex). For targets placed on straight stretches of road or on the outside of curves, the adaptive feature provided no significant improvement in target detection. However, the pattern of results indicate that HID lamps whether fixed or adaptive improved target detection somewhat, suggesting that part of the real world crash reduction measured for this adaptive system (Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), 2012a) may be due to the differences in the light source (HID vs. halogen). Depending on the scenario, the estimated benefits to driver response time associated with the tested adaptive (swiveling HID) headlights ranged from 200 to 380ms compared with the fixed headlight systems tested.
