Abstract:Variable message signs (VMSs), as one of the important ITS devices, provide real-time traffic information of road network to drivers in order to improve route choice and relieve the traffic congestion. In this study, the effectiveness of VMS on driving behavior was tested based on a driving simulation experiment. A road network with three levels of VMS location to route-diverging intersection and three types of VMS information format was designed in a high fidelity driving simulator platform. Fifty-two subjects who were classified by driver age, gender, and vocation successfully completed this experiment. The experimental results showed that driver characteristics, VMS location, and information format profoundly influence driving behaviors. Based on the research findings, it is suggested that VMS would be positioned between 150 m and 200 m upstream of the diverging point to balance the VMS effects on traffic safety and operation and the graphic information VMS format is better than the format with text massage only.

Abstract:In the realm of transportation system optimization, enhancing overall performance through the proactive coordination of traffic guidance and signal control in a divergent network can tackle the challenges posed by traffic congestion and inefficiency. Thus, we propose an innovative approach to first allow the information on variable message signs (VMS) that deviates from estimated travel times. This proactive approach guides drivers towards optimal routes from a system-wide perspective, such as minimizing vehicle hours traveled. The deviation is constrained both by the lower bound of drivers' long-term compliance rate and the upper bound of the favored traffic signal operation. The proposed approach coordinates the traffic guidance system with the signal control system. The traffic signal control system sets the upper limit for information deviation in the traffic guidance system, while the traffic guidance system provides demand predictions for the traffic signal control system. Overall, the objective function of the approach is the network-level performance of all users. We gauge traveler satisfaction as a measure of system credibility, using both a route choice module and a satisfaction degree module established through stated preference surveys. Numerical results demonstrate that proactive-coordinated (PC) strategies outperform reactive-coordinated (RC), proactive-independent (PI), and reactive-independent (RI) strategies by improving the system performance, meanwhile keeping the system trustworthy. Under the normal traffic scenario, the PC strategy reduces total travel time by approximately 10%. Driver satisfaction with the PC strategy increases from a baseline of 76% to 95%. Moreover, in scenarios with sudden changes in either traffic demand or supply, e.g., accidents or large events, the proactive guidance strategy is more flexible and can potentially improve more from the system perspective.

Abstract:Roadside variable message sign (VMS) is one of the important tools of ITS for traffic management and route guidance in many countries. To investigate the driver route choice behavior in the presence of VMS information in Beijing, the authors carried out a study using the SP survey to collect drivers' route choice behavioral data, covering driving years, network familiarity, tolerance to the delay, education level, criteria of the route choice, confidence in VMS information, etc. A cumulative logistic regression model was developed to determine the probability of diversion. The algorithm of transforming the change of the traffic flow into diversion probability was developed in the paper, which includes the method for link state recognition and Cumulative flow diversion model. Furthermore, factors that will influence the drivers' behavior were analyzed. It is indicated that drivers might pay high attention to the dynamic information of VMS, but the accuracy and punctuality of the information in Beijing still needs to be improved because it is one of the most important factor influencing driver's route choice behavior, and the more important is providing clear information to support drivers' diversion decision (when and where to divert). © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Variable message sign (VMS) is an effective traffic management tool for congestion mitigation. The VMS is primarily used as a means of providing factual travel information or genuine route guidance to travelers. However, this may be rendered sub-optimal on a network level by potential network paradoxes and lack of consideration for its cascading effect on the rest of the network. This paper focuses on the design of optimal display strategy of VMS in response to real-time traffic information and its coordination with other intelligent transportation systems such as signal control, in order to explore the full potential of real-time route guidance in combating congestion. We invoke the linear decision rule framework to design the optimal on-line VMS strategy, and test its effectiveness in conjunction with on-line signal control. A simulation case study is conducted on a real-world test network in China, which shows the advantage of the proposed adaptive VMS display strategy over genuine route guidance, as well as its synergies with on-line signal control for congestion mitigation.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The effects of traffic sign information volume (TSIV) on the visual characteristics and workload of novice and experienced drivers were investigated in this study. TSIV plays a crucial role in road traffic safety, and understanding its impact on drivers is essential for designing effective traffic sign systems. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to compare the visual characteristics and workload of novice and experienced drivers under varying TSIV doses through simulated driving tests. The objective was to provide insights for optimizing the design of road TSIV. METHODS: Six TSIV levels were considered: S0, S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5, representing different workload levels. Participants, including both novice and experienced drivers, were involved in simulated driving scenarios with varying TSIV levels. Eye movement data was collected using an eye tracker device. The study was conducted in China, and appropriate driving simulators and equipment were utilized. RESULTS: The findings revealed several valuable results. Experienced drivers exhibited a higher proportion of saccade behavior in the 30–90 ms time period and did not show rapid saccade behavior during the 0–30 ms period, indicating superior visual search strategies. Both novice and experienced drivers demonstrated improved visual cognitive abilities at the S3 level of TSIV, which corresponds to normal and safe driving conditions. Furthermore, a majority of both groups had saccade amplitudes in the range of 0°–4°, with experienced drivers showing a slightly higher proportion. About 82% of experienced drivers had saccade behavior within the range of 0°–2°, compared to 75% of novice drivers. CONCLUSIONS: The study concludes that the S3 level of TSIV, corresponding to 30 bits/km, is optimal for both novice and experienced drivers. This level promotes better visual performance and reduces visual workload, indicating that drivers’ information acquisition capacity and visual search strategies are maximized while keeping the workload associated with driving at a minimum. These findings have significant implications for enhancing driving safety.

Abstract:The problem of designing route guidance strategies for highway networks via on-route recommendation of variable message signs（VMS） was considered.A generic problem formulation was presented in the format of an optimal on-off control problem whose control action is the switching of VMS.The cell transmission model was then employed to perform network dynamics and a genetic algorithm-based problem solving approach was given.The simulation shows that the strategy with optimal VMS control trajectories can make better use of the highway capability and reduce regional congestion,especially in case the traffic network has unbalanced demand.The total time spent（TTS） of the network can be improved up to 32.39%.

Abstract:With the development and application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), parking guidance and information system (PGIS) has become a hot topic for research and applications. Parking variable message sign (parking VMS) is the most common form of PGIS currently in use, particularly in providing the space availability information to en-route drivers. The aim of this study is to model drivers' responses to the parking VMSs under various parking information in a dynamical way. To ensure the guiding efficiency and assist drivers to identify parking lots with vacant spaces, the display strategies of parking VMS were studied. A discriminated release strategy with a space occupancy indicator (SOI) was then proposed to determine the display content on the parking VMS, in which an agent-based simulation was introduced to incorporate both parking choice model and traffic assignment algorithm dynamically. Guiding reliability and display strategies were further analyzed to attain a discriminated release strategy with SOI effectively. The results indicate that the guiding reliability was improved by reducing the SOI value of the corresponding parking lot, and the relatively uniform guiding reliabilities of all parking lots were attained by modifying SOI values iteratively. Additionally, the performance by incorporating the waiting time into the parking choice model was investigated and recommended. The discriminated release strategy presented in this study will assist in designing and operating urban PGIS.
Audiovisual presentation of variable message signs improves message processing in distracted drivers during partially automated driving

Abstract:Introduction: Highly automated driving is expected to reduce the accident risk occurrence by human errors, but it can also increase driver distraction. Previous evidence shows that auditory signals can help drivers take over in critical situations. However, it is still uncertain whether the potential benefit of verbal auditory signals could be generalized to driving situations where drivers are visually and auditorily distracted. Method: Our first objective was to compare the effectiveness of complementary audio messages (audio + visual condition) and visual only (visual condition) variable message signs (VMS) messages. The second objective was to explore the potential use of oral messages with traffic information to help highly-automated vehicle drivers identify critical situations. Eye-tracking data were also registered. Twenty-four volunteers participated in a driving simulator study, completing two tasks: (a) a TV series task, where they had to pay attention to an episode of a TV series while traveling along the route; and (b) a VMS task, where they had to recover the manual control of the car if the VMS message was a ‘critical message.’ Results: General results showed that, when the audio was available, the participants: (a) had a higher ability to discriminate the VMS messages, (b) were less conservative, (c) responded earlier, and (d) their pattern of fixations was more efficient. A complementary analysis showed that the counterbalance order was a moderating factor for the discrimination ability and the response distance measures. This evidence suggests a potential learning effect, not cancelled by counterbalancing the order of the conditions. Conclusion: The processing of traffic messages may improve when provided as oral and visual messages. Practical Applications: These results would be of special interest for engineers designing highly automated cars, considering that the design of automated systems must ensure that the driver's attention is sufficient to take over control.

Promotion of Driver Compliance with V2V Information in Car-Following Tasks Via Multimodal Display

Abstract:The success of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication in improving the driving safety and efficiency primarily depends on driver compliance with the transmitted information. In this study, driver compliance with V2V information in simulated car-following tasks was measured and analyzed under different information display settings, such as baseline without information, visual information only, and multimodal information. Car-following data were collected from 30 participants in a driving simulation environment. The results revealed that V2V information could significantly reduce the driver's response time to the lead car's speed change, resulting in an increase in the minimum time-to-collision when the lead car slowed down. Driver compliance was significantly higher under multimodal information settings than when using visual information alone. Moreover, driver compliance was higher when facing a decelerating lead car than when facing an accelerating lead car. No significant differences in driver compliance between the deceleration levels was observed; however, differences existed among different car-following preference groups. The findings of this study can be applied to V2V car-following models to improve the simulation accuracy for connected-vehicle traffic. Additionally, multimodal information presentation can provide a reference for V2V communication design.

Abstract:Traffic has always been the infrastructure of national economic and social development. With the pace of urbanization unprecedented speedup and the increase of vehicle possessions, traffic congestion has become a big problem in modern cities. Regional traffic guidance system provides traffic information for road travelers in pre-trip and in on-trip, and guides travelers to change travel modes, choose travel routes, and save travel time to take full advantage of road network resources. Variable message sign (VMS) is one of the main ways to provide traffic information in metropolitan road network, but traditional VMS guidance regions are designated manually by traffic administrators to cause very bad effectiveness and efficiency, and there are even some VMS used only for advertising that have nothing to do with the traffic guidance management. We analyze the traffic guidance model based on VMS, and study the dynamic regional partition problem and the dynamic traffic guidance problem under real-time traffic conditions, and put forward the architecture and two algorithms. The architecture serves mainly for the whole cycle of developing VMS based guidance from raw data collection to traffic information publish. The algorithms dynamically partition traffic guidance regions and dynamically change the vehicle turning ratio at intersections to balance traffic flow and save travel time in guidance regions. The cellular automaton method based on SWARM platform is employed to simulate traffic environment, and verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the model and the algorithms by compare with the other traditional regional guidance algorithm.
Analysis and regulation of driving behavior in the entrance zone of freeway tunnels: Implementation of visual guidance systems in China

Abstract:In China, visual guidance systems are commonly used in tunnels to optimize the visual reference system. However, studies focusing specifically on visual guidance systems in the tunnel entrance zone are limited. Hence, a driving simulation test is performed in this study to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of (i) visual guidance devices at different vertical positions (pavement and roadside) and (ii) a multilayer visual guidance system for regulating driving behavior in the tunnel entrance zone. Furthermore, the characteristics of driving behavior and their effects on traffic safety in the tunnel entrance zone are examined. Data such as the vehicle position, area of interest (AOI), throttle position, steering wheel angle, and lane center offset are obtained using a driving simulation platform and an eye-tracking device. As indicators, the first fixation position (FP), starting deceleration position (DP), average throttle position (TPav), number of deceleration stages (N|DS), gradual change degree of the vehicle trajectory (G|VT), and average steering wheel angle (SWAav) are derived. The regulatory effect of visual guidance devices on driving performance is investigated. First, high-position roadside visual guidance devices effectively reduce decision urgency and significantly enhance deceleration and lane-keeping performance. Specifically, the advanced deceleration performance (AD), smooth deceleration performance (SD), trajectory gradualness (TG), and trajectory stability (TS) in the tunnel entrance zone improve by 63%, 225%, 269%, and 244%, respectively. Additionally, the roadside low-position visual guidance devices primarily target the trajectory gradualness (TG), thus resulting in improvements by 80% and 448% in the TG and TS, respectively. Meanwhile, the pavement visual guidance devices focus solely on enhancing the TS and demonstrates a relatively lower improvement rate of 99%. Finally, the synergistic effect of these visual guidance devices facilitates the multilayer visual guidance system in enhancing the deceleration and lane-keeping performance. This aids drivers in early detection and deceleration at the tunnel entrance zone, reduces the urgency of deceleration decisions, promotes smoother deceleration, and improves the gradualness and stability of trajectories.
Influence of in-Vehicle Audio Warning on Drivers' Eye-Movement and Behavior at Flashing Light-Controlled Grade Crossings

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of in-vehicle audio warning at flashing-light-controlled grade crossings based on driving simulation and eye-tracking systems. Background: Collisions at flashing-light-controlled grade crossings have severe consequences. In-vehicle audio warning has the potential to regulate driver behavior. However, whether this improvement occurs through priming drivers' visual search patterns is not yet clear. Method: Drivers' visual activity and behaviors were recorded. The effect of a warning was tested with a series of flashing light trigger times (FLTTs) ranging from 2s to 6s with a 1s increment. Different driving conditions (i.e., clear and fog) and driver experience were considered in the experiment design. Results: Warnings could guide the allocation of both overt and covert attention, as well as raise drivers' situation awareness, manifesting as the enhanced perception of signs and better understanding of the flashing red light. Significant improvement in the stop-compliance rate was found in warning scenarios, particularly with a late FLTT. The decreased saccade duration and increased fixation duration on the signal implied a dilemma-zone effect when the FLTT was lower than 4s. Furthermore, reduced fixation duration on signs and signals was found in foggy conditions. Non-professional drivers had a wider search range than their counterparts. Conclusion: In-vehicle audio warning is an effective countermeasure for improving crossing safety by optimizing visual search strategy. Application: In-vehicle audio warnings warrant promotion at grade crossings based on the driver assistance system.
Variable Speed Limit Strategy to Improve the Safety and Environmental Impact of Freeway Traffic

Abstract:This paper investigates variable speed limit (VSL) systems, trying to optimize the system designs when the variable message signs (VMSs) are movable. The optimization problem is formulated as a large mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem, whose decision variables include the number of VMSs to be deployed, the locations of the VMSs, and the speed limits posted on the VMSs. Two objective functions are considered, one is to maximize the traffic safety of freeway traffic, and the other is to minimize the environmental impact measure. The authors proposed a genetic algorithm to solve the complex problem. Numerical examples performed on a real freeway segment show that VSL can effectively improve the safety and environmental impact of freeway traffic.
Comparative mass spectrometry-based metabolomics strategies for the investigation of microbial secondary metabolites.

Abstract:Covering: 2000 to 2016The labor-intensive process of microbial natural product discovery is contingent upon identifying discrete secondary metabolites of interest within complex biological extracts, which contain inventories of all extractable small molecules produced by an organism or consortium. Historically, compound isolation prioritization has been driven by observed biological activity and/or relative metabolite abundance and followed by dereplication via accurate mass analysis. Decades of discovery using variants of these methods has generated the natural pharmacopeia but also contributes to recent high rediscovery rates. However, genomic sequencing reveals substantial untapped potential in previously mined organisms, and can provide useful prescience of potentially new secondary metabolites that ultimately enables isolation. Recently, advances in comparative metabolomics analyses have been coupled to secondary metabolic predictions to accelerate bioactivity and abundance-independent discovery work flows. In this review we will discuss the various analytical and computational techniques that enable MS-based metabolomic applications to natural product discovery and discuss the future prospects for comparative metabolomics in natural product discovery.
Impacts of information quantity and display formats on driving behaviors in a connected vehicle environment

Abstract:The emerging connected vehicle (CV) technologies facilitate the development of integrated advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs), with which various functions are coordinated in a comprehensive framework. However, challenges arise in enabling drivers to perceive important information with minimal distractions when multiple messages are simultaneously provided by integrated ADASs. To this end, this study introduces three types of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for an integrated ADAS: 1) three messages using a visual display only, 2) four messages using a visual display only, and 3) three messages using visual plus auditory displays. Meanwhile, the differences in driving performance across three HMI types are examined to investigate the impacts of information quantity and display formats on driving behaviors. Additionally, variations in drivers' responses to the three HMI types are examined. Driving behaviors of 51 drivers with respect to three HMI types are investigated in eight field testing scenarios. These scenarios include warnings for rear-end collision, lateral collision, forward collision, lane-change, and curve speed, as well as notifications for emergency events downstream, the specified speed limit, and car-following behaviors. Results indicate that, compared to a visual display only, presenting three messages through visual and auditory displays enhances driving performance in four typical scenarios. Compared to the presentation of three messages, a visual display offering four messages improves driving performance in rear-end collision warning scenarios but diminishes the performance in lane-change scenarios. Additionally, the relationship between information quantity and display formats shown on HMIs and driving performance can be moderated by drivers' gender, occupation, driving experience, annual driving distance, and safety attitudes. Findings are indicative to designers in automotive industries in developing HMIs for future CVs.
Effect of Visual Instruction on Drivers' Reaction Pattern in Lateral Conflicts.

Abstract:Side-impact accident is the most common form of traffic accident in China and contributes the most fatalities. Driver factor is widely believed to be the main causation of those accidents. During lateral conflicts at intersections, braking with same-direction-swerving are used too often by drivers under many inappropriate conditions, resulting in traffic accidents which could have been avoided. In this driving simulation study, arrow-shaped visual instructions are displayed in front of drivers, in order to guide them and reduce their dangerous avoidance reaction pattern described above. Firstly, in pretest, subjects' natural emergency avoidance behavior during intersection conflicts was tested without any instructions; Later, in posttest, arrow-shaped visual instructions were shown in front of subjects when conflicts were triggered; Finally, one month later, drivers were asked to attend a tracking test with the same visual instructions displayed. Result shows that without instruction, subjects prefer to use braking and same-direction-swerving irrationally in lateral conflicts. Although such pattern is not helpful for avoiding crashes, they didn't manage to correct themselves during trials. In posttest, arrow-guidance is found significantly helpful for drivers to make better longitudinal and lateral avoidance choices. However, positive impact of visual instruction drops significantly in tracking test one month later. Learning effect is observed among trials in both posttest and tracking test. This study provides a data basis for driver's decision-making mechanism research under conflict conditions, and could be used for future intelligent connected vehicles' human-machine interaction design as well as collision-avoidance system development.

Abstract:Connected vehicle (CV) technology has revolutionised the intelligent transportation management system by providing new perspectives and opportunities. To further improve risk perception and early warning capabilities in intricate traffic scenarios, a comprehensive field test was conducted within a CV framework. Initially, data for basic safety messages (BSM) were systematically gathered within a real-world vehicle test platform. Subsequently, an innovative approach was introduced that combined multimodal interactive filtering with an advanced vehicle dynamics model to integrate BSM vehicle motion data with observations from roadside units. In addition, a driving condition perception methodology was developed, leveraging rough sets and an enhanced support vector machine (SVM), to identify aberrant driver behaviours and potential driving risks effectively. Furthermore, this study integrated BSM data from various scenarios, including car-following, lane changes, and free driving within the CV environment, to formulate multidimensional driving state sequence patterns for short-term predictions (0.5 s) utilising the long short-term memory (LSTM) model framework. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach in accurately identifying potentially hazardous driving conditions and promptly predicting collision risks. The findings from this research hold substantial promise in advancing road traffic safety management.

Abstract:The variable message signs (VMS) have been widely used in guiding and managing the dynamic traffic with development of intelligent transportation technologies. It is known that cell transmission model (CTM) can well reproduce such traffic dynamics as shock waves and jams. This paper is novel in simulating the traffic propagations based on CTM and VMS route recommendations. The impacts of VMS on congestion are numerically investigated. Simulation results show that the real-time traffic conditions can well be reproduced. The VMS can positively influence travelers' decision making so as to alleviate the grave degree of traffic congestion. And further, the higher traffic demands are, the better effect of VMS route recommendation is.
Study on the Influence of Connected Vehicle Fog Warning Systems on Driving Behavior and Safety

Abstract:Driving speeds are higher on freeways, and the visibility reduction occurring in freeway fog zones often increases traffic accidents. This study aims at assessing the impact of different levels of connected vehicle fog warning systems on driving behavior and safety. A connected vehicle fog warning system is developed based on driving simulators, and virtual scenes are developed based on fog zones. The connected vehicle technology includes three levels: a normal level, a level including a human-machine interface, and a level with both a human-machine interface and dynamic message signs. Speed and lateral deviation are chosen as assessment indicators and combined with sample entropy to evaluate the impact of the connected vehicle fog warning system on safety. The deceleration ratio of the warning point is used to evaluate the efficiency of the connected vehicle fog warning system. Results show that the connected vehicle fog warning system can significantly reduce driving speed, and that there are differences in the speed-reduction effectiveness for different technical levels. The connected vehicle fog warning system can reduce the lateral deviation and improve the lateral driving safety. From the perspective of change stability, speed safety entropy and lateral deviation safety entropy are increased, which indicates that the connected vehicle fog warning system will negatively impact safety because of the additional workload. Drivers’ responses are more pronounced in the human-machine interface group compared to the group with dynamic message signs, where the drivers maintained a lower speed. This study provides a reference for the studies on connected vehicle technology based on driving simulators and supports the optimization, design, and evaluation of connected vehicle fog warning systems.

Abstract:Objective Inter-vehicle information comes from inter-vehicle communication and plays an important role in driving assistance.The present study aims to explore the effect of information channel,information complexity and driving scenarios on visual attention and driving performance.Methods 3 (information complexity:no,simple,complex) * 2 (information channel:visual,auditory) * 2 (driving scenarios:longitudinal,horizontal,turning) mixed experiment design was applied,visual attention and driving performance index were dependent variables,and 60 drivers were recruited and divided into two groups:visual and auditory group respectively.Results (1) auditory information improved drivers'the stability of driving and steering control and did not impaired the visual attention of drivers,but visual information had an opposite effect;(2) simple information also improved drivers'the stability of driving,and steering control and impaired the visual attention of drivers to the safe and central road area only in visual form.Conclusion simple auditory information is suitable for the longitudinal and horizontal trajectory scenarios,while inter-vehicle information was not suitable for turning scenario.
