Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to explore how various factors affect older people's vehicle speed perception to enhance their road safety as pedestrians, focusing on the impact of their cognitive and perceptual abilities on road-crossing decisions. Methods: The study evaluated the effects of brightness contrast (high, medium and low), road complexity (high and low) and vehicle travel direction (same and opposite) on speed perception errors in simulated traffic settings. It involved 38 older participants who estimated the speed of a comparison vehicle under two judgement conditions. Results: Findings showed a consistent underestimation of speed in all conditions. A repeated-measure ANOVA revealed that speed perception errors were significantly higher with low brightness contrast, in simpler road environments, with vehicles travelling in the same direction, and when using absolute judgements. Conclusions: These results have practical importance for public safety initiatives, traffic regulation and road design catering to older adults' perceptual needs. They also provide valuable insights for driver training programs for older adults, aimed at enhancing their understanding and management of perceptual biases.

Abstract:Purpose Speed estimation of drivers’ own vehicles and other vehicles on the road is an important task for drivers and is also crucial to the roadway safety. The objective of the study was to examine the effects of multiple factors such as image scale, speed, road type, driving experience, and gender on the speed perception of drivers’ own vehicles. Methods Thirty participants consisted of 17 males and 13 females, including 13 without driving experience. All participants estimated the driving speed of 192 5-second video clips, which were selected from naturalistic driving recordings. The recorded driving speeds were evenly distributed across the entire range from 5mph to 65mph. Half of the selected video clips were recorded on wide roads and another half were recorded on comparatively narrow roads. Video clips were played on a large screen, with each clip shown in one of 4 image scales (100%, 75%, 50%, and 38% of the actual field of view in the real world). Results Speed estimates were most accurate for the smallest image size (38% of the actual field of view). As the image size increased, the driving speed was increasingly underestimated. Participants with driving experience accurately estimated the driving speed on both wide and narrow roads whereas those without driving experience had greater underestimates on wider roads. Speeds were most accurately estimated within the range 25-35mph, but the speeds slower than the range tend to be overestimated and the speeds faster than the range are more likely to be underestimated. While males and females showed the same pattern across speed groups, females have greater estimation errors at the highest and lowest speed groups. Participants without driving experience showed increasing underestimation of speed as driving speed increased whereas participants with driving experience primarily underestimated the highest speeds. Conclusions The present study shows the effect of multidimensional influential factors on perceived vehicle speed from drivers’ perspective. The results also have implications for driving simulation scenario design, driving simulator setup, and the assessment of speed control in simulated and naturalistic environments.

Abstract:Despite awareness campaigns and legal consequences, speeding is a significant cause of road accidents and fatalities globally. To combat this issue, understanding the impact of a driver's visual surroundings is crucial in designing roadways that discourage speeding. This study investigates the influence of visual surroundings on drivers in 15 US cities using 3,407,253 driver view images from Lytx, covering 4,264 miles of roadways. By segmenting and analyzing these images along with vehicle-related variables, the study examines factors affecting speeding behavior. After filtering the images, to ensure an accurate representation of the driver's view, 1,340,035 driver view images were used for analysis. Statistical models, including hurdle beta and bivariate probit models with random driver effects as well as Machine Learning's eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), were employed to estimate speeding behavior. The results indicate that factors within the driver's visual environment, weather conditions, and driver heterogeneity significantly impact speeding. Speeding behavior also varies across geographic locations, even within the same city, suggesting a connection between local context and speeding. The study highlights the importance of the driver's environment, showing that more open spaces encourage speeding, while areas with trees and buildings are associated with reduced speeding. Notably, this research differs from previous studies by utilizing real-time data from dash cameras, providing a dynamic and accurate representation of the driver's visual surroundings. This approach enhances the reliability of the findings and empowers transportation engineers and planners to make informed decisions when designing roadways and implementing interventions to address effectively excessive speeding. In addition to examining speeding behavior, the study also analyzes time-headway, a key factor affecting safety and risky driver behavior, to explore its relationship with speeding. The findings offer valuable insights into the factors influencing speeding and the driver's visual environment. These insights can inform efforts to create environments that discourage speeding (and close car following) and ultimately reduce severe accidents caused by excessive speed (and tailgating).

Beyond gaze fixation: Modeling peripheral vision in relation to speed, Tesla Autopilot, cognitive load, and age in highway driving

Abstract:Objective: The study aims to model driver perception across the visual field in dynamic, real-world highway driving. Background: Peripheral vision acquires information across the visual field and guides a driver's information search. Studies in naturalistic settings are lacking however, with most research having been conducted in controlled simulation environments with limited eccentricities and driving dynamics. Methods: We analyzed data from 24 participants who drove a Tesla Model S with Autopilot on the highway. While driving, participants completed the peripheral detection task (PDT) using LEDs and the N-back task to generate cognitive load. The I-DT (identification by dispersion threshold) algorithm sampled naturalistic gaze fixations during PDTs to cover a broader and continuous spectrum of eccentricity. A generalized Bayesian regression model predicted LED detection probability during the PDT-as a surrogate for peripheral vision-in relation to eccentricity, vehicle speed, driving mode, cognitive load, and age. Results: The model predicted that LED detection probability was high and stable through near-peripheral vision but it declined rapidly beyond 20°-30° eccentricity, showing a narrower useful field over a broader visual field (maximum 70°) during highway driving. Reduced speed (while following another vehicle), cognitive load, and older age were the main factors that degraded the mid-peripheral vision (20°-50°), while using Autopilot had little effect. Conclusions: Drivers can reliably detect objects through near-peripheral vision, but their peripheral detection degrades gradually due to further eccentricity, foveal demand during low-speed vehicle following, cognitive load, and age. Applications: The findings encourage the development of further multivariate computational models to estimate peripheral vision and assess driver situation awareness for crash prevention.

Abstract:Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and death. The "silent" rise of blood pressure that occurs over time is largely asymptomatic. However, its impact is deafening-causing and exacerbating cardiovascular disease, end-organ damage, and death. The present article addresses recent observations from human and animal studies that provide new insights into how the circadian clock regulates blood pressure, contributes to hypertension, and ultimately evolves vascular disease. Further, the molecular components of the circadian clock and their relationship with locomotor activity, metabolic control, fluid balance, and vascular resistance are discussed with an emphasis on how these novel, circadian clock-controlled mechanisms contribute to hypertension.

Abstract:Accident risk and severity are closely associated with speeding. Reducing vehicles’ speeds can contribute to road traffic safety. Conventional speed reduction measures, such as speed limit enforcement or speed indicator devices, only have a local effect, so they are not suitable for longer road stretches with varying speed limit, e.g. narrow curves in motorway exits. We present a novel speed reduction measure based on the concept of “nudging”. The measure consists of LEDs embedded in the road marking that light up in front of vehicles which exceed a predefined speed threshold. The speeds and positions of the vehicles are gathered in real-time by thermal cameras and computer vision algorithms in order to target and follow only the speeding vehicles without distracting other drivers. The speed reduction measure was implemented and evaluated at a motorway exit with a narrow curve in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The effectiveness was analyzed using linear regression models in order to take external influences on the speed (e.g. daylight, weather) into account. The mean speed was reduced by up to 2.7 km/h and the ratio of speeding vehicles by up to 40%. The most substantial speed reduction was observed on the straight part of the exit lane, which means that drivers decelerate earlier in front of the curve rather than in the curve, where longitudinal and lateral acceleration would overlap.

Abstract:Sight obstructions along road curves can lead to a crash if the driver is not able to stop the vehicle in time. This is a particular issue along curves with limited available sight, where speed management is necessary to avoid unsafe situations (e.g., driving off the road or invading the other traffic lane). To solve this issue, we proposed a novel intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) system for visibility, called V-ISA (intelligent speed adaptation for visibility). It estimates the real-time safe speed limits based on the prevailing sight conditions. V-ISA comes with three variants with specific feedback modalities (1) visual and (2) auditory information, and (3) direct intervention to assume control over the vehicle speed. Here, we investigated the efficiency of each of the three V-ISA variants on driving speed choice and lateral behavioural response along road curves with limited and unsafe available sight distances, using a driving simulator. We also considered curve road geometry (curve direction: rightward vs. leftward). Sixty active drivers were recruited for the study. While half of them (experimental group) tested the three V-ISA variants (and a V-ISA off condition), the other half always drove with the V-ISA off (validation group). We used a linear mixed-effect model to evaluate the influence of V-ISA on driver behaviour. All V-ISA variants were efficient at reducing speeds at entrance points, with no discernible negative impact on driver lateral behaviour. On rightward curves, the V-ISA intervening variant appeared to be the most effective at adapting to sight limitations. Results of the current study implies that V-ISA might assist drivers to adjust their operating speed as per prevailing sight conditions and, consequently, establishes safer driving conditions.

Abstract:The risks associated with night-time driving on dimly lit roads are substantial and are attributable to the limitations of human visual abilities. As a result, drivers often struggle to distinguish road geometry from ordinary road markings, thus increasing the likelihood of mistakes. These circumstances contribute to a 60 % higher likelihood of road crashes compared to daytime conditions. To mitigate these risks, active LED road studs, which previous studies have shown to have a positive influence on driving performance, can be used. However, there remains a gap in research regarding the optimal arrangement of these studs along road markings for an improvement in driver behaviour and traffic safety. In this study, we assessed the influence of five different LED road stud layouts (unlit, edge, centre, edge-centre, and lane) during night-time driving on two-lane rural highways with curves of different radii (120, 210, 300, 440 m) and directions (left, right). Following a within subject design, thirty-five participants drove in a simulator along a road track with 8 spiralled curves (4 radii × 2 directions) linked to straights. We monitored the longitudinal (i.e., speed), transversal (i.e., lateral position and standard deviation of lateral position) and gaze behaviours. Our findings indicate that the presence of LED road studs promotes safer driving, by helping drivers to adjust their speed when negotiating curves. Transversal behaviour analysis revealed layout-dependent effects on lateral position. The presence of road studs both at the lane centreline and edge allows drivers to maintain centred trajectories and improve steering control. Gaze behaviour analysis uncovered interesting patterns, demonstrating a strong correlation between road stud layout and the driver's focus on specific road targets. Illuminated markings prompt drivers to concentrate their gaze on distinct points, subsequently altering their transversal behaviour.

Abstract:The efficacy and safety of the nasally administered drug Allergodil in the treatment of allergic rhinitis were evaluated in a prospective drug monitoring programme conducted in Germany. Data from 489 children under the age 13 were included. The study was designed to gain knowledge about Allergodil in a normal clinical setting. Dosing was at the judgement of the investigator bearing in mind data sheet recommendations, i.e. one spray-puff (0.14 mg) per nostril twice daily. Patients were treated for four weeks. The occurrence of ten nasal, eye and throat symptoms was rated (0 = never, 1 = sometimes, 2 = often). All symptoms showed a statistically significant improvement at the final visit, as did the overall sums of the scores. These changes were clinically significant. Overall assessment of efficacy by the physicians and the patients was very good and good in more than 85% of patients. 70% of patients required no concomitant medication. 13.5% of patients experienced adverse events, mostly mild or moderate in severity. Safety and tolerance were assessed as very good and good in more than 97% of cases. No sedation was seen. With respect to both efficacy and safety, there were no differences between patients younger than 6 years and those aged 6-12 years. In conclusion, these results suggest that Allergodil is an effective treatment of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis in children. The subgroup of 48 young patients studied shows that Allergodil was safe and well tolerated in patients aged 2-6 years.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate how route familiarity affected drivers' eye movement features (fixation and saccade) and driving speed when driving in the entrance zone of highway tunnels with different spatial visual conditions. On-road tests were conducted on the drivers' visual characteristics and the speed were recorded in real time using an eye tracker and onboard diagnostic system. The variations in the eye movement features and speed in the entrance zone of the tunnels were analyzed. Then, statistical methods were conducted to examine the influence of the route familiarity and spatial visual conditions of tunnels on the driver behavior. The results demonstrated that the variations in the drivers' eye movements and speed were much more significant in the entrance zone of a tunnel without spatial intervisibility than in a tunnel with spatial intervisibility. The impact of this environmental transition on unfamiliar drivers was greater than that on familiar drivers. Road familiarity reduced the drivers' period of adaptation to the tunnel entrance environment and increased the driving speed.

Abstract:Although dimming the light in tunnels brings salient benefits to energy saving, the effects of dimming-induced luminance changes on driving safety have been rarely explored. Adopting the visual performance experiment, the present study investigated the impacts of the dimming-induced luminance change rate (V) on the safety of driver’s perception, judgment, and operation in the threshold zone of the tunnel under different seasons and weather conditions. The results show that the reaction times (RTs), pupil area change rate (vp), and blink frequency (fb), increased with the increase of V. When the luminance before the beginning of dimming (L) was higher, drivers reacted faster and stood a lower level of the mental load and fatigue. Compared with decreasing the luminance through dimming, when increasing the luminance through dimming, the present study found that each of the visual performance indices was about 10% lower, and the changes with V became smaller. Based on the safety thresholds of RT, vp, and fb, the present study obtained the thresholds of V which can meet the safety requirements of driver’s perception, judgment, and operation. Finally, a theoretical model between the thresholds of V and L was developed, and this model will shed light on the control of V in the threshold zone of the tunnel under different seasons and weather conditions.
Comparative mass spectrometry-based metabolomics strategies for the investigation of microbial secondary metabolites.

Abstract:Covering: 2000 to 2016The labor-intensive process of microbial natural product discovery is contingent upon identifying discrete secondary metabolites of interest within complex biological extracts, which contain inventories of all extractable small molecules produced by an organism or consortium. Historically, compound isolation prioritization has been driven by observed biological activity and/or relative metabolite abundance and followed by dereplication via accurate mass analysis. Decades of discovery using variants of these methods has generated the natural pharmacopeia but also contributes to recent high rediscovery rates. However, genomic sequencing reveals substantial untapped potential in previously mined organisms, and can provide useful prescience of potentially new secondary metabolites that ultimately enables isolation. Recently, advances in comparative metabolomics analyses have been coupled to secondary metabolic predictions to accelerate bioactivity and abundance-independent discovery work flows. In this review we will discuss the various analytical and computational techniques that enable MS-based metabolomic applications to natural product discovery and discuss the future prospects for comparative metabolomics in natural product discovery.
Dynamic measurements of speed and risk perception during driving: Evidence of speed misestimation from continuous ratings and video analysis

Abstract:Investigating the factors underlying perceived speed and risk is crucial to ensure safe driving. However, existing studies on this topic usually measure speed and risk perception indirectly after a driving session, which makes it difficult to trace dynamic effects and time points of potential misestimates. To address this problem, we developed and validated a novel continuous method for dynamically measuring risk and speed perceptions. To study the factors affecting risk and speed perception, we presented participants with videos captured on the same racing track from the same point of view but with different drivers who varied in their speed and risk profiles. During the experiment, participants used a joystick to continuously rate the subjectively perceived risk of driving in the first block and the perceived speed in the second block. Our analysis of these dynamic ratings indicates that risk and speed estimates were decoupled, with curves resulting in decreased speeds but increased risk ratings. However, a close distance to the car in front increased both speed and risk. Based on actual and estimated speed data, we found that overtaking cars on curves resulted in participants overestimating their own speed, whereas an increase in the distance to the car in front on a straight course led to underestimations of their own speed. Our results showcase the usefulness of dynamic rating profiles for in-depth investigations into situations that could result in drivers misjudging speed or risk and will thus help the development of more intelligent, human-centered driving assistance systems.

Abstract:There are significant differences in the processing of perceived visuo-spatial information by drivers, which reflects their velocity optimization and collision avoidance abilities in car-following behavior. In addition, visuo-spatial working memory provides the driver with the functions of spatial information storage and attention allocation, which is critical in driving decision-making. Therefore, we try to use the data of car-following experiments in real traffic scenes to study the association between driving behavior and driver's visuo-spatial working memory and establish a new visual angle model based on data correlation analysis and dynamic characteristics. The effects of newly introduced attention allocation, visuo-spatial working memory duration, memory sensitivity to visuo-spatial rate of change, and vehicle size factors on the nonlinear and linear stability of traffic flow were analyzed. The above conclusions are verified by small disturbance simulation experiments. Finally, we propose a new collision assessment indicator incorporating visuo-spatial working memory and use it to conduct simulation experiments and statistical analysis on the improvement of the new model in driving safety.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The effects of traffic sign information volume (TSIV) on the visual characteristics and workload of novice and experienced drivers were investigated in this study. TSIV plays a crucial role in road traffic safety, and understanding its impact on drivers is essential for designing effective traffic sign systems. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to compare the visual characteristics and workload of novice and experienced drivers under varying TSIV doses through simulated driving tests. The objective was to provide insights for optimizing the design of road TSIV. METHODS: Six TSIV levels were considered: S0, S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5, representing different workload levels. Participants, including both novice and experienced drivers, were involved in simulated driving scenarios with varying TSIV levels. Eye movement data was collected using an eye tracker device. The study was conducted in China, and appropriate driving simulators and equipment were utilized. RESULTS: The findings revealed several valuable results. Experienced drivers exhibited a higher proportion of saccade behavior in the 30–90 ms time period and did not show rapid saccade behavior during the 0–30 ms period, indicating superior visual search strategies. Both novice and experienced drivers demonstrated improved visual cognitive abilities at the S3 level of TSIV, which corresponds to normal and safe driving conditions. Furthermore, a majority of both groups had saccade amplitudes in the range of 0°–4°, with experienced drivers showing a slightly higher proportion. About 82% of experienced drivers had saccade behavior within the range of 0°–2°, compared to 75% of novice drivers. CONCLUSIONS: The study concludes that the S3 level of TSIV, corresponding to 30 bits/km, is optimal for both novice and experienced drivers. This level promotes better visual performance and reduces visual workload, indicating that drivers’ information acquisition capacity and visual search strategies are maximized while keeping the workload associated with driving at a minimum. These findings have significant implications for enhancing driving safety.

The primary objective of this research is to compare the effect of ambient light and focal icons on driving performance and gaze behavior. We conducted two driving simulator experiments. The first experiment evaluated an ambient light cue in a free driving scenario. The second one focused on the difference in gaze behavior between ALD and focal icons, called “abstract faces with emotional expressions” (FEE). The results show that drivers decide more often for safe gaps in rightward maneuvers with ambient light cues. Similarly, drivers decide to overtake more often when the gaps are big enough with both displays in the second experiment. Regarding gaze behavior, drivers looked longer towards the forward area, and less often and shorter into the side mirrors when using ALD. This effect supports the assumption that drivers perceive the ALD with peripheral vision. In contrast, FEE did not significantly affect the gaze behavior when compared to driving without assistance. These results help us to understand the effect of different modalities on performance and gaze behavior, and to explore appropriate modalities for lane change support.

Abstract:Background: This study aimed at comparing drivers' and non-drivers' results in the Adult Developmental Eye Movement with Distractors test (ADEMd) and the Useful Field of View test (UFOV). Methods: One hundred and twenty Spaniards (mean age 50.90 ± 17.32 years) without eye disease voluntarily participated in this cross-sectional descriptive study. Participants in a single experimental session completed a questionnaire on sociodemographic, health, eyesight, and driving information. They also performed the ADEMd and UFOV tests randomly following standardized protocols. The ADEMd is a visual-verbal test that measures saccadic efficiency and visual attention. Brown-Forsythe (B-F) tests with Games-Howell post-hoc adjustments were conducted to assess differences between groups. Groups were formed according to sex, age (young adults, adults, and older adults), and driver/non-driver for further analysis. Additionally, associations between dependent variables were assessed through Spearman's correlations. Results: Drivers obtained significantly better results in the ADEMd compared with non-drivers. Non-significant differences between drivers and non-drivers were encountered in the UFOV. Additionally, significant differences were observed between sexes and age groups. It is worth highlighting that non-driver's age significantly correlated with worse ADEMd performance (rho = .637 to .716). This correlation was non-significant in drivers. Similarly, reading hours significantly correlated with better ADEMd performance in non-drivers (rho = - .291 to - .363), but not in drivers. The only significant correlations between ADEMd and UFOV tests were found in drivers (rho = .307 to .410). Conclusion: Considering all the discussed results, it could be hypothesized that the driving task promotes abilities, such as oculomotor and cognitive function, which are relevant for the performance in the ADEMd. However, this hypothesis is based on correlational outcomes and further studies should causally assess this possible relation.

Abstract:It is currently still unknown why some drivers with visual field loss can compensate well for their visual impairment while others adopt ineffective strategies. This paper contributes to the methodological investigation of the associated top-down mechanisms and aims at validating a theoretical model on the requirements for successful compensation among drivers with homonymous visual field loss. A driving simulator study was conducted with eight participants with homonymous visual field loss and eight participants with normal vision. Participants drove through an urban surrounding and experienced a baseline scenario and scenarios with visual precursors indicating increased likelihoods of crossing hazards. Novel measures for the assessment of the mental model of their visual abilities, the mental model of the driving scene and the perceived attention demand were developed and used to investigate the top-down mechanisms behind attention allocation and hazard avoidance. Participants with an overestimation of their visual field size tended to prioritize their seeing side over their blind side both in subjective and objective measures. The mental model of the driving scene showed close relations to the subjective and actual attention allocation. While participants with homonymous visual field loss were less anticipatory in their usage of the visual precursors and showed poorer performances compared to participants with normal vision, the results indicate a stronger reliance on top-down mechanism for drivers with visual impairments. A subjective focus on the seeing side or on near peripheries more frequently led to bad performances in terms of collisions with crossing cyclists. The study yielded promising indicators for the potential of novel measures to elucidate top-down mechanisms in drivers with homonymous visual field loss. Furthermore, the results largely support the model of requirements for successful compensatory scanning. The findings highlight the importance of individualized interventions and driver assistance systems tailored to address these mechanisms.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Mild cognitive impairment and gender can impact different aspects of driving performance and behaviour in older drivers. However, there is little evidence on how these may affect naturalistic speeding behaviour. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between speeding events and cognitive status for older male and female drivers.PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A naturalistic driving study collected objective driving information over a two-week period using an in-vehicle monitoring device from 36 older drivers with suspected mild cognitive impairment and 35 older drivers without cognitive impairment. The outcome of interest examined was the number of speeding events, defined as travelling 5+ km/h over the posted speed limit for at least a minute.RESULTS: The majority of participants (n=58, 81.69%) did not have a speeding event during the two-week monitoring period. Twenty-three speeding events were recorded among seven drivers with suspected mild cognitive impairment and six drivers without cognitive impairment. The majority of speeding events (82.61%) were by older male drivers and occurred in 60km/h and 70km/h speed zones. The results of the two negative binomial regression models found that in older male drivers, suspected mild cognitive impairment (IRR=7.45, 95% CI=1.53-36.15, p=0.01) was associated with a significantly higher rate of speeding events, while increasing age was associated with a lower rate of speeding events (IRR=0.80, 95% CI=0.64-1.00, p=0.04). For older female drivers, there were no factors significantly associated with the rate of speeding events.CONCLUSION: While the overall number of speeding events were infrequent, suspected mild cognitive impairment was associated with a significant increase in the rate of speeding events for older male drivers, but not for older female drivers. Speeding interventions and injury prevention policy strategies may need to be targeted differently for male and female drivers with mild cognitive impairment.
