Abstract:A computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin block material for restoration of single-implant abutments can be milled and cemented on an optimized standard titanium abutment as a cheaper solution or, alternatively, individualization of the crown–abutment connection is required to fulfill the same mechanical requirements. The aim of this study was to evaluate how different structural and geometric configurations of the abutment influence the resistance of a nano ceramic resin crown (NCRC). During the test, 30 implants with an internal conical tapered configuration were considered. Each implant received a standard titanium abutment: in group 1, NCRCs were directly bonded to the titanium abutments; in group 2, NCRCs were cemented on a customized zirconia framework and then cemented on a standardized titanium abutment. Three crowns of each group were submitted to a static load test until failure. The remaining crowns were submitted to a fatigue test protocol with a dynamic load. The static and dynamic test showed earlier failure for group 1. In group 1, complete breaking of NCRCs was observed for all samples, with an almost total titanium abutment exposition. In the static tests, group 2 showed a mode of failure that involved only the crown, which partially debonded from the zirconia abutment. Within the limitations of the present preliminary study, it was possible to conclude that the shape of the abutment mainly influences the fatigue strength compared to the static tensile strength. The results of the performed test show that NCRC bonded to the customized zirconia abutments, and presented a 75% survival rate when compared to the same material bonded directly to a standard titanium abutment.

Abstract:We propose a restoration algorithm of images degraded by a motion blur and additive white noise using matrix operators. The present algorithm is preferable to all noisy motion degraded image data processing from viewpoints of reduction of memory sizes and computational time. Finally, simulation results of image restoration are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The study factors were the type of material used as the mesostructure or crown (zirconia, lithium disilicate, and hybrid ceramic) and the crown design cemented to the titanium base (mesostructure cemented to the titanium base and a crown cemented on it (HaC); hybrid crown-abutment, the abutment and crown are manufactured as a single piece and cemented to the titanium base (HC); monolithic crown cemented on the titanium base and screwed to the implant (CS); and monolithic crown cemented on the titanium base (CC). Four 3D models were constructed using an implant with an internal connection, and an oblique load of 130 N was applied at 45° to the long axis of the implant. The models were evaluated using the von Mises stress for crown, abutment, screw, and implant and maximum principal stress for bone tissues. The lowest stresses occurred in the groups with a lower elastic modulus material, mainly hybrid ceramics, considered a material with greater resilience. The cemented crown group presented the lowest stress values. The stresses were concentrated in the cervical region of the crown at the titanium crown/base interface. Mesostructures made of materials with a higher elastic modulus exhibited a higher concentration of stress. The presence of a screw hole increased the stress concentration in the ceramic crown. Cemented ceramic crowns exhibited better biomechanical behavior than screw-retained crowns.
Influence of CAD/CAM Abutment Heights on the Biomechanical Behavior of Zirconia Single Crowns

Abstract:The biomechanical behavior of the universal link (titanium base) prosthetic abutment with different heights in implant-supported restorations was evaluated. Forty regular implants (4 × 10 mm) in titanium were used, divided into two groups according to the abutment height (n = 20): 4.5 × 4 mm (short) and 4.5 × 5.5 mm (long). Using CAD/CAM technology, zirconia crowns were milled and cemented onto the prosthetic abutments. Half of the specimens were submitted to the initial maximum fracture load test in a universal testing machine. The long abutments presented fracture load (41.1 ± 6.96 kgf) statistically similar to the short abutments (49.5 ± 7.68 kgf). The other half of the specimens were submitted to mechanical cycling (2,000,000 cycles, 2 Hz with a stainless-steel antagonist with a diameter of 1.6 mm), following ISO 14801:2007. Subsequently, the survival of the specimens was evaluated using the survival analysis function, Kaplan–Meier and Mentel–Cox (log- rank) (p < 0.05). The finite element analysis was performed in similar conditions to those used for the in vitro test through computer-aided engineering software (version 19.2, ANSYS Inc., Houston, TX, USA). The biomechanical behavior of both models was similar regardless of the evaluated structure of the set. It was concluded that both short and long abutment presents promising fatigue behavior and stress distribution for use in long-term implant-supported restorations.

This paper provides a theoretical framework to analyze how the heterogeneity promoting industrial evolution under the conditions of cost difference and product diversity. Then we draw a conclusion that both the heterogeneity among firms and the technology innovation could promote industrial evolution.
In vitro performance and fracture resistance of novel CAD/CAM ceramic molar crowns loaded on implants and human teeth

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the fatigue and fracture resistance of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic molar crowns on dental implants and human teeth. Materials and methods: Molar crowns (n=48; n=8/group) were fabricated of a lithium-disilicate-strengthened lithium aluminosilicate glass ceramic (N). Surfaces were polished (P) or glazed (G). Crowns were tested on human teeth (T) and implant-abutment analogues (I) simulating a chairside (C, crown bonded to abutment) or labside (L, screw channel) procedure for implant groups. Polished/glazed lithium disilicate (E) crowns (n=16) served as reference. Combined thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TC: 3000×5℃/3000×55℃; ML: 1.2×106 cycles, 50 N) with antagonistic human molars (groups T) and steatite spheres (groups I) was performed under a chewing simulator. TCML crowns were then analyzed for failures (optical microscopy, SEM) and fracture force was determined. Data were statistically analyzed (Kolmogorow-Smirnov, one-way-ANOVA, post-hoc Bonferroni, α=.05). Results: All crowns survived TCML and showed small traces of wear. In human teeth groups, fracture forces of N crowns varied between 1214±293 N (NPT) and 1324±498 N (NGT), differing significantly (P≤.003) from the polished reference EPT (2044±302 N). Fracture forces in implant groups varied between 934±154 N (NGI_L) and 1782±153 N (NPI_C), providing higher values for the respective chairside crowns. Differences between polishing and glazing were not significant (P≥.066) between crowns of identical materials and abutment support. Conclusion: Fracture resistance was influenced by the ceramic material, and partly by the tooth or implant situation and the clinical procedure (chairside/labside). Type of surface finish (polishing/glazing) had no significant influence. Clinical survival of the new glass ceramic may be comparable to lithium disilicate.
Assessment of reliability of CAD-CAM tooth-colored implant custom abutments

Abstract:Statement of problem: Information is lacking about the fatigue resistance of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) tooth-colored implant custom abutment materials. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the reliability of different types of CAD-CAM tooth-colored implant custom abutments. Material and methods: Zirconia (Lava Plus), lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD), and resin-based composite (Lava Ultimate) abutments were fabricated using CAD-CAM technology and bonded to machined titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy inserts for conical connection implants (NobelReplace Conical Connection RP 4.3×10 mm; Nobel Biocare). Three groups (n=19) were assessed: group ZR, CAD-CAM zirconia/Ti-6Al-4V bonded abutments; group RC, CAD-CAM resin-based composite/Ti-6Al-4V bonded abutments; and group LD, CAD-CAM lithium disilicate/Ti-6Al-4V bonded abutments. Fifty-seven implant abutments were secured to implants and embedded in autopolymerizing acrylic resin according to ISO standard 14801. Static failure load (n=5) and fatigue failure load (n=14) were tested. Weibull cumulative damage analysis was used to calculate step-stress reliability at 150-N and 200-N loads with 2-sided 90% confidence limits. Representative fractured specimens were examined using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy to observe fracture patterns. Results: Weibull plots revealed β values of 2.59 for group ZR, 0.30 for group RC, and 0.58 for group LD, indicating a wear-out or cumulative fatigue pattern for group ZR and load as the failure accelerating factor for groups RC and LD. Fractographic observation disclosed that failures initiated in the interproximal area where the lingual tensile stresses meet the compressive facial stresses for the early failure specimens. Plastic deformation of titanium inserts with fracture was observed for zirconia abutments in fatigue resistance testing. Conclusions: Significantly higher reliability was found in group ZR, and no significant differences in reliability were determined between groups RC and LD. Differences were found in the failure characteristics of group ZR between static and fatigue loading.
Influence of straight versus angulated screw channel titanium bases on failure loads of two-piece ceramic and titanium implants restored with screw-retained monolithic crowns: An in-vitro study

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the influence of titanium-base (straight [SSC]/angulated-screw-channel [ASC]) on failure-loads and bending-moments of two-piece ceramic and titanium-zirconium implants restored with monolithic-zirconia crowns after fatigue. Materials and methods: Thirty-two anterior monolithic-screw-retained zirconia crowns were divided into four groups (n = 8/group) according to the factors: (1) type of implant material: two-piece titanium-zirconium implant (Ti-Zr; control-group) versus two-piece ceramic implant (CI; test-group) and (2) type of titanium-base: SSC (0° angle) versus ASC (25°). An intact implant was used for field emission gun-scanning electronic microscopy (FEG-SEM) characterization and Raman spectroscopy for phase analyses and residual stress quantification. All samples were exposed to fatigue with thermodynamic loading (1.2-million-cycles, 49 N, 1.6 Hz, 5-55°C) at a 30° angle. Surviving specimens were loaded until failure (SLF) and bending moments were recorded. Failed samples were examined using light microscope and SEM. Statistical analyses included ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: Raman-spectroscopy revealed the presence of residual compressive stresses. FEG-SEM revealed a roughened surface between threads and polished surface at the cervical-collar of the ceramic implant. All samples survived fatigue and were free of complications. Mean bending-moments (±SD) were: Ti-Zr-0: 241 ± 45 N cm, Ti-Zr-25: 303 ± 86 N cm, CI-0: 326 ± 58 N cm, CI-25: 434 ± 71 N cm. Titanium-base and implant-material had significant effects in favor of ASC titanium bases (p = .001) and ceramic-implants (p < .001). Failure analysis after SLF revealed severe fractures in ceramic implants, whereas titanium implants were restricted to plastic deformation. Conclusions: Ceramic and titanium implants exhibited high reliability after fatigue, with no failures. From a mechanical perspective, titanium bases with ASC can be recommended for both ceramic and titanium implants and are safe for clinical application.
Mechanical Behavior of Repaired Monolithic Crowns: A 3D Finite Element Analysis

Abstract:This study evaluated the mechanical behavior and risk of failure of three CAD-CAM crowns repaired with different resin composites through a three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis. Three-dimensional models of different cusp-repaired (conventional nanohybrid, bulk-fill, and flowable resin composites) crowns made of zirconia, lithium disilicate, and CAD-CAM resin composite were designed, fixed at the cervical level, and loaded in 100 N at the working cusps, including the repaired one. The models were analyzed to determine the Maximum Principal and Maximum Shear stresses (MPa). Complementary, an in vitro shear bond strength test (n = 10) was performed to calculate the risk of failure for each experimental group. The stress distribution among the models was similar when considering the same restorative material. The crown material affected the stress concentration, which was higher for the ceramic models (±9 MPa for shear stress; ±3 MPa for tensile stress) than for the CAD-CAM composite (±7 MPa for shear stress; ±2 MPa for tensile stress). The shear bond strength was higher for the repaired CAD-CAM resin composite (±17 MPa) when compared to the ceramics (below 12 MPa for all groups), while the repair materials showed similar behavior for each substrate. The stress distribution is more homogenous for repaired resin composite crowns, and a flowable direct resin composite seems suitable to repair ceramic crowns with less risk of failure.

Abstract:Objectives Due to the dynamic character of the stomatognathic system, fatigue life experiments simulating the cyclic loading experienced by implant-supported restorations are critical consideration. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of different crown and abutment materials on fatigue failure of single implant-supported crowns. Methods Models were created for 10 different designs of implant-supported single crowns including two zirconia-reinforced lithium silicates (crystallized and precrystallized), monolithic lithium disilicate, polymer-infiltrated ceramic networks, and polyetheretherketone supported by zirconia and titanium abutments. A cyclic load of 179 N with a frequency of 1 Hz was applied on palatal cusp of a maxillary first premolar at a 30° angle in a buccolingual direction. Results In the models with titanium abutments, the polymer-infiltrated ceramic network model had a lower number of cycles to fatigue failure values in the implant (5.07), abutment (2.30), and screw (1.07) compared to others. In the models with zirconia abutments, the crystallized zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate model had a higher number of cycles to fatigue failure values in the abutment (8.52) compared to others. Depending on the fatigue criteria, polyetheretherketone implant crown could fail in less than five year while the other implant crowns exhibits an infinite life on all models. Conclusions The type of abutment material had an effect on the number of cycles to fatigue failure values for implants, abutments, and screws, but had no effect on crown materials. The zirconia abutment proved longer fatigue lifetime, and should thus be considered for implant-supported single crowns.

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance and fracture resistance of different resin-matrix ceramic materials for use in implant-supported single crowns with respect to the abutment design (crown thickness: 1 mm, 2 and 3 mm). Methods: Forty-eight abutments and crowns were fabricated on implants in the right lower first molar. Two resin-matrix ceramic materials for dental crowns were selected for study: (1) a glass-ceramic in a resin interpenetrating matrix (Vita Enamic, Vita, Germany) and (2) a resin-based composite with nanoparticle ceramic filler (Lava Ultimate, 3 M ESPE, USA). Three types of abutments were designed: 1 mm thick crown + custom titanium abutment, 2 mm thick crown + custom titanium abutment and 3 mm thick crown + prefabricated titanium abutment. The experiment was divided into 6 groups (n = 8) according to the crown materials and abutment designs. After 10,000 thermocycles, fracture resistance was measured using a universal testing machine. The statistical significance of differences between various groups were analysed with ANOVA followed by a post hoc Tukey's honestly significant difference test. The surfaces of the fractured specimens were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: Two-way ANOVA revealed that the abutment design (F = 28.44, P = 1.52 × 10- 8<0.001) and the crown materials (F = 4.37, P = 0.043 < 0.05) had a significant effect on the fracture resistance of implant crown restoration. The Lava Ultimate-2 mm group showed the highest fracture resistance of 2222.74 ± 320.36 N, and the Vita Enamic-3 mm group showed the lowest fracture resistance of 1204.96 ± 130.50 N. Most of the 1 and 2 mm groups had partial crown fractures that could be repaired directly with resin, while the 3 mm group had longitudinal fracture of the crown, and the crowns were detached from the abutments. Conclusion: Based on the in vitro data of this study, the fracture resistance of the 2 mm thick resin-matrix ceramic crown design was higher than that of the 1 and 3 mm groups. The 2 mm thick resin-matrix ceramic crown and personalized abutment are an option to replace zirconia for implant crown restoration.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Murine bone marrow stromal cells differentiate not only into mesodermal derivatives, such as osteocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, skeletal myocytes, and cardiomyocytes, but also into neuroectodermal cells in vitro. Human bone marrow stromal cells are easy to isolate but difficult to study because of their limited life span. To overcome this problem, we attempted to prolong the life span of bone marrow stromal cells and investigated whether bone marrow stromal cells modified with bmi-1, hTERT, E6, and E7 retained their differentiated capability, or multipotency. In this study, we demonstrated that the life span of bone marrow stromal cells derived from a 91-year-old donor could be extended and that the stromal cells with an extended life span differentiated into neuronal cells in vitro. We examined the neuronally differentiated cells morphologically, physiologically, and biologically and compared the gene profiles of undifferentiated and differentiated cells. The neuronally differentiated cells exhibited characteristics similar to those of midbrain neuronal progenitors. Thus, the results of this study support the possible use of autologous-cell graft systems to treat central nervous system diseases in geriatric patients.
Effect of implant connection and restoration design (screwed vs. cemented) in reliability and failure modes of anterior crowns

Abstract:The mechanical performance of cemented or screw-retained implant-supported crowns with an internal or external configuration is yet to be understood. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of screw-retained and cement-retained prostheses on internal and external implant-abutment connections. Thereby, the reliability and failure modes of crowns were investigated. Eighty-four implants (Emfils; Colosso Evolution system) were divided into four groups (n=21 each): screw-retained and internal connection (Si), screw-retained and external connection (Se), cement-retained and internal connection (Ci), and cement-retained and external connection (Ce). Ti-6Al-4V abutments were torqued (30 Ncm) to the implants, and maxillary central incisor metal crowns were torqued (30 Ncm) or cemented (Rely X Unicem; 3M-ESPE) and subjected to accelerated life-testing in water. Use-level probability Weibull curves and reliability for 50,000 cycles at 150 N were calculated. The β values for Si (1.72), Se (1.50), Ci (1.34), and Ce (1.77) groups indicated that fatigue/damage accumulation accelerated their failure. The Ci group presented the highest reliability, the Se group presented the lowest reliability, and Si and Ce groups presented intermediate reliability. Screw-retained restorations presented mainly abutment fracture. Cement-retained restorations resulted in failures of the screw in the Ce group, but implant/screw fracture in the Ci group.

Abstract:PURPOSE: The present in silico study evaluated the behavior of titanium dental implants associated with abutments in zirconia and monotype zirconia implant using finite element analysis (FEA).METHODS: A partial image of the anterior region of the maxilla was obtained by computed tomography. Three models of finite element were made using 3D modeling software (SolidWorks): Ti-Ti (control): implant morse cone (3.75 x 11mm; NobelActive) and titanium abutment (Esthetic Abutment); Ti-Zr: cone morse implant in titanium (3.75 x 11mm; NobelActive) and zirconia abutment (Procera Esthetic Abutment #9); Zr: monotype zirconia implant (4.1 x 12mm; Straumann Pure Ceramic). Computerized crowns of element 11 in lithium disilicate (IPS e.max Press, Ivoclar Vivadent) cemented in all groups were created. A load of 100N (45º) was applied simulating the excursion movement of the incisal guide. The von Mises, modified von Mises, maximum (tensile) and minimum (compression) principal stresses were obtained, compared and used for the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the groups.RESULTS: The Zr presented the lowest values of maximum, minimum, and von Mises tensions than the two pieces systems (Ti-Ti and Ti-Zr). Ti-Zr group had the highest values of tensions evaluated in this study.CONCLUSIONS: The type of material as well as the geometry of implant influenc ed the tension values evaluated.

Abstract:Defining the relationship between maternal hypothyroxinemia during early pregnancy (free T4 [FT4] 10th centile) and offspring neurocognitive development is an ongoing challenge to those exploring the biology of maternal-fetal interactions in search of opportunities for improving neurocognitive function. Although not yielding a definitive characterization of this relationship, the report by Finken et al (1) in this issue of the JCEM represents an important step forward. Studies of this type are labor-intensive and require a considerable investment of time and organizational skill. The authors enrolled a large cohort of women during early pregnancy, collected baseline demographics, performed thyroid testing, and then monitored outcome as part of the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) study. When offspring of those women reached the age of 5 years, the investigators measured various aspects of neurocognitive function via a computerized assessment program. Application of a computerized measurement tool in this context allowed all responses to be determined objectively. Several features of this study add confidence to its conclusions: 1) the study was community-based; 2) TSH, FT4, and thyroperoxidase (TPO) antibody measurements were performed early in pregnancy; 3) children were tested at an age when results are reliable; 4) numbers of children tested were sufficient to detect important differences; 5) testing was blinded and carried out by trained investigators in a school setting; 6) the computerized assessment tool provided objective performance measurements; and 7) the ABCD study collected extensive demographics and biophysical data that were available for use in regression analyses. Computerized assessment consisted of 4 tasks. The 175 children of hypothyroxinemic mothers performed significantly less well only on the first task (baseline speed, a simple reaction time test that required minimal cognitive effort). The other 3 tasks measured visuomotor coordination, inherent response inhibition, and response flexibility. On these latter 3 tasks, children of hypothyroxinemic mothers did not perform differently from the remaining children. For the first task, however, their mean response speed was 41.3 milliseconds slower than that of 1584 children whose mothers’ FT4 levels were above the 10th centile. Each child performed this task 32 times with each hand, allowing the standard deviation of response speed to be measured as well. This was also significantly greater, indicating more instability in performing the task repeatedly. The difference in response speed remained significant after adjustment for multiple variables. Furthermore, the slowing of response speed was more pronounced when limited to children of mothers with FT4 levels fifth centile. Finally, mean reaction time was even longer among 44 children of mothers whose FT4 measurements were 10th centile and whose TSH measurements were 90th centile. Given that children of hypothyroxinemic mothers performed the other 3 tasks satisfactorily, the longer term developmental implications are unclear, although documentation of the slower response speed was convincing. In addition to reporting neurocognitive data, this study highlights maternal characteristics that segregate at the population level with low FT4. Abstract:Purpose This study compared the fracture strength of single lithium disilicate implant‐supported crowns fabricated on two‐piece abutments with various materials: ceramic‐reinforced PEEK, zirconia, and lithium disilicate. Materials and Methods Thirty‐six implants were embedded in acrylic cylinders. A two‐piece abutment and a crown were designed following a pre‐operation scan for a maxillary left central incisor. The designed crown was used to fabricate 36 lithium disilicate crowns. The designed abutment was used to manufacture 36 abutments from 3 materials, 12 each: (A) zirconia; (B) lithium disilicate; and (C) ceramic‐reinforced PEEK. Abutments were surface treated and bonded on the titanium base abutments with resin cement. Then, lithium disilicate crowns were bonded on the assigned abutments. Specimens were then subjected to dynamic loading for 1,200,000 cycles. The fracture strength (N) of the assembly was assessed using a universal testing machine. One‐way ANOVA followed by multiple comparison tests was used to evaluate the effect of abutment material on the fracture strength of single implant‐supported restorations at a significance of .05. Results The average fracture strength for the groups with zirconia, PEEK, and lithium disilicate two‐piece abutments were 1362N ± 218N, 1235N ± 115N, and 1472N ± 171N, respectively. There was a significant (p 0.05) difference between the other groups. Conclusions Two‐piece abutments restored with lithium disilicate crowns investigated in the study have the potential to withstand the average physiological occlusal forces in the anterior region.

Abstract:This in-silico investigation evaluated the mechanical impact of Morse tape implant-abutment interface and retention system (with and without screw) and restorative materials (composite block and monolithic zirconia) by means of a three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA). Four 3D models were designed for the lower first molar. A dental implant (4.5 × 10 mm B&B Dental Implant Company) was digitized (micro CT) and exported to computer-aided design (CAD) software. Non-uniform rational B-spline surfaces were reconstructed, generating a 3D volumetric model. Four different models were generated with the same Morse-type connection, but with a different locking system (with and without active screw) and a different crown material made of composite block and zirconia. The D2 bone type, which contains cortical and trabecular tissues, was designed using data from the database. The implants were juxtaposed inside the model after Boolean subtraction. Implant placement depth was simulated for the implant model precisely at crestal bone level. Each acquired model was then imported into the finite element analysis (FEA) software as STEP files. The Von Mises equivalent strains were calculated for the peri-implant bone and the Von Mises stress for the prosthetic structures. The highest strain values in bone tissue occurred in the peri-implant bone interface and were comparable in the four implant models (8.2918e-004–8.6622e-004 mm/mm). The stress peak in the zirconia crown (64.4 MPa) was higher than in the composite crown (52.2 MPa) regardless of the presence of the prosthetic screw. The abutment showed the lowest stress peaks (99.71–92.28 MPa) when the screw was present (126.63–114.25 MPa). Based on this linear analysis, it is suggested that the absence of prosthetic screw increases the stress inside the abutment and implant, without effect on the crown and around the bone tissue. Stiffer crowns concentrate more stress on its structure, reducing the amount of stress on the abutment.

Abstract:NSAIDs have been a mainstay of therapy for rheumatologic diseases for a number of years. Unfortunately, their use was accompanied by sometimes unacceptable gastrointestinal and/or renal side effects. Therefore, safer treatment options were sought. In the process of such a search, selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors were identified. Drugs in this class have anti-inflammatory properties similar to NSAIDs and did not produce anywhere near the same pattern of NSAID-related gastrotoxicity. The enthusiasm for this class of drugs would appear, at least on the surface, to be well grounded. However, establishing the renal side effect profile of the selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors would appear to be a work in progress. Formal studies with selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors have not been conducted in the congestive heart failure population. Information does though exist for other patient cohorts--similarly "prostaglandin-dependent" for their integrity of renal function, such as the elderly and sodium-deplete individual. These data would strongly suggest that the selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors could decrease glomerular filtration rate and stimulate salt and water retention, comparable to what occurs with nonselective NSAIDs. To date, no compelling information exists, which supports the notion that differences exist among the currently available selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors--celecoxib and--in the potential to negatively impact renal function in this and similarly compromised patient populations. Abstract:Statement of problem: Several additively and subtractively manufactured resin-based materials indicated for interim and definitive fixed dental prostheses have been launched. However, knowledge of the bond strength of these materials to different implant abutment materials is limited. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of additively and subtractively manufactured resin-based materials to different implant abutment materials. Material and methods: One hundred and ten disk-shaped specimens (Ø3×3 mm) were fabricated either additively from 2 resins indicated for definitive use (Crowntec; AM_CT and VarseoSmile Crown Plus; AM_VS) and 1 resin indicated for interim use (FREEPRINT temp; AM_FP) or subtractively from a nanographene-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (G-CAM; SM_GC) and a high-impact polymer composite (breCAM.HIPC; SM_BC). After allocating 2 specimens from each group for scanning electron microscope evaluation, the specimens were divided according to the abutment material (CopraPeek; polyetheretherketone, PEEK and Dentium Superline Pre-Milled Abutment; titanium, Ti) (n=10). All specimens were airborne-particle abraded with 50-µm aluminum oxide. After applying a resin primer (Visio.link) to PEEK and an adhesive primer (Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus) to Ti specimens, a self-adhesive resin cement (PANAVIA SA Cement Universal) was used for cementation. All specimens were stored in distilled water (24 hours, 37 °C), and a universal testing device was used for the SBS test. SBS data were analyzed with 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significant difference tests, while the chi-squared test was used to evaluate the difference among the abutment-resin pairs in terms of failure modes (α=.05). Results: The interaction between the material type and the abutment type and the main factor of material type affected the SBS (P<.001). SM_BC-PEEK and SM_GC had the lowest SBS followed by SM_BC-Ti, whereas AM_VS-PEEK had the highest SBS (P≤.001). AM_CT-Ti had higher SBS than AM_FP-PEEK (P=.026). SM_GC had the lowest and AM_VS had the highest SBS, while AM_CT and AM_FP had higher SBS than SM_BC (P≤.004). The distribution of failure modes was significantly different among tested material-abutment pairs, and only for AM_CT among tested materials (P≤.025). Most of the material-abutment pairs had a minimum of 80% adhesive failures. Conclusions: Regardless of the abutment material, additively manufactured specimens had higher bond strength and one of the subtractively manufactured materials (SM_GC) mostly had lower bond strength. The abutment material had a small effect on the bond strength. Adhesive failures were observed most frequently.
