Abstract:Objective This study was to evaluate whether resin luting system could improve the fracture resistance of endodontically treated incisors with prefabricated and cast metal posts.Methods Fourty intact maxillary central incisors after endodontical treatments were randomly assigned to four groups of 10 teeth each. The teeth were then restored with prefabricated titanium alloy posts or cast nickel-chromium post-and-cores and metal-ceramic crowns. The posts and crowns were cemented with either adhesive composite resin luting system or glass ionomer cement. All restored teeth were thermocycled for 5000 cycles (5℃/55℃) as a fatigue test. Each specimen was secured in a universal testing machine. A compressive load was applied at an angle of 135 degrees to the long-axis of the tooth with a crosshead speed of 1.5mm/s until initial fracture. Fracture loads and modes (repairable or catastrophic) were recorded.Results The fracture load was 499.82±168.90N in the group of Ti-alloy post with resin cement (group 1) and was 388.98±125.22N in the group of the same posts with glass ionomer cement (group 2); The fracture load in the group of cast post with resin cement (group 3) was 412.55±99.29N,while 337.41±121.18N in the group of the same posts with glass ionomer cement (group 4). The repairable fracture observed from Group 1 to Group 4 was 40%, 20%, 20% and 30% respectively. No significant difference was found for fracture load and fracture mode between groups with different luting agents (P>0.05).Conclusion It indicates that adhesive composite resin luting system might not significantly improve the fracture resistance of the pulpless incisors restored with metal posts.
Restoration of severely damaged endodontically treated premolars: The influence of the endo-core length on marginal integrity and fatigue resistance of lithium disilicate CAD-CAM ceramic endocrowns

Abstract:Objectives: To explore fatigue limits of ceramic endocrowns for premolars. Methods: Forty-eight devitalized premolars were cut at the CEJ. They were restored with standardized CAD-CAM lithium disilicate reinforced ceramic restorations (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar-Vivadent) and divided into four Groups (n=12): overlays (Group A, no endo-core, negative control), endocrowns with an endo-core of 2mm (Group B), 4mm (GroupC) and crowns with post and core (Group D, positive control). All specimens were first submitted to thermo-mechanical cyclic loading (TCML)(1.7Hz, 49N, 600000 cycles, 1500 thermo-cycles). Margins were analysed before and after the loading. Survived specimens were then submitted to cyclic isometric stepwise loading (5Hz, 200N to 1200N) until completion of 105000 cycles or failure. In case of fracture, fragments were analysed using SEM and failure mode was determined. Results of stepwise loading were statistically analysed by Kaplan-Meier life survival analysis and log rank test (p=0.05). Results: All the specimens survived the TCML test except four specimens of Group A (early restorations' debonding). No difference in percentages of closed margins was found between endocrowns (Groups B, C) and crowns (Group D). After the stepwise test, differences in survival within the groups were not statistically significant. Most of restorations experienced non-reparable fracture. Conclusions: Endocrowns with both 2-mm and 4-mm long endo-cores displayed outcomes after fatigue equivalent to classical crowns. Results of this study discourage the use of flat overlays with only adhesive retention. Clinical significance: When restoring extremely destroyed devitalized premolars, adhesive strategies should be coupled to a macro-mechanical retention in the root.
[An Experimental Study on Fracture Resistance of Metal-Ceramic Crowned Incisors with Different Post-Core Systems].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate fracture resistance of metal-ceramic crown restored incisors with different post-and-core systems.METHODS:Selected 40 intact maxillary central incisors were endodontically treated and then randomly assigned to four groups of 10 teeth each. Teeth in Group A were prepared to root canal with 10 mm in length, 1.6 mm in diameter and restored with fiber-reinforced posts and composite cores. Same final preparation but root canal with 1.5 mm in diameter was achieved for teeth in the other three groups. Teeth in Group B were restored with prefabricated titanium alloy posts and composite cores and teeth in Group C were restored with cast nickel-chromium post-cores. The posts were luted with a composite resin luting system, and metal-ceramic crowns were restored and cemented with the same luting system for all of the teeth in Group A, B and C. The other 10 teeth were restored with cast nickel-chromium post-cores and metal-ceramic crowns as a control, which were cemented with glass-ionomer cement. All restored teeth were thermo-cycled for 5000 cycles (5 degrees C/55 degrees C) as a fatigue test. The tooth was loaded in a universal testing machine at an angle of 135 degrees to the long-axis at the incisal edge with a cross-head speed of 1.5 mm/min until fracture. Fracture loads (N) and modes (repairable or catastrophic) were recorded. One-way ANOVA and SNK test were used to determine the significance of the failure loads between groups. Chi-square test was conducted for evaluation of the fracture mode.RESULTS:The fracture loads from Group A, B, C and control group were (534.4 +/- 145.7) N, (499.8 +/- 168.9) N, (412.6 +/- 99.3) N, (337.4 +/- 121.2) N, respectively. A significant difference was existed among four groups (P < 0.05). The fracture loads of Group A and Group B were significantly higher than control group (P < 0.05). The repairable mode of fracture observed from Group A to control group was 80%, 40%, 20% and 30%, Group A had a significantly higher number of repairable fractures than those of the other groups (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS:Within the limitations of this study, fiber-reinforced post has an excellent fracture resistance, and can be recommended as an alternative to cast post-cores, especially for incisor esthetic restoration.

Abstract:We propose a restoration algorithm of images degraded by a motion blur and additive white noise using matrix operators. The present algorithm is preferable to all noisy motion degraded image data processing from viewpoints of reduction of memory sizes and computational time. Finally, simulation results of image restoration are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Post-Fatigue Fracture and Marginal Behavior of Endodontically Treated Teeth: Partial Crown vs. Full Crown vs. Endocrown vs. Fiber-Reinforced Resin Composite

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate in vitro post-fatigue fracture behavior of endodontically treated molars having been differently restored. Methods: A total of 120 extracted human molars were used. A total of 120 specimens in 14 test groups and one control group (n = 8) were root canal treated. After postendodontic sealing and build-up (AdheSE Universal, SDR), additional MOD preparations were cut. Postendodontic restorations were: Direct restorations (Tetric EvoCeram BulkFill bonded with AdheSE Universal and EverX Posterior/Essentia bonded with G-Premio Bond; as filling (F) or direct partial crown (DPC) after reducing the cusps 2 mm; indirect adhesive restorations (partial crown/PC vs. full crown/FC): e.max CAD, Celtra Duo, both luted with Variolink Esthetic; indirect zirconia restorations (partial crown/PC vs. full crown/FC), luted with RelyX Unicem 2; indirect non-bonded cast gold restorations (partial crown/PC vs. full crown/FC; Degunorm), luted with Ketac Cem. Before and after 300,000 thermocycles (5/55 °C) and 1.2 Mio. A total of 100 N load cycles, replicas were analyzed under a SEM for marginal quality in enamel and dentin (where applicable) and finally, specimens were loaded until fracture. Results: In direct groups, there was no difference between RC and FRC in fracture strength (p > 0.05); however, direct partial crowns showed higher post-fatigue fracture resistance. Regarding marginal quality, intracoronal FRC restorations exhibited more gap-free margins in enamel than RC. In the indirect groups, there was no significant difference between partial and full crowns in any of the adhesively luted ceramic groups regarding post-fatigue fracture resistance. Zirconia partial crowns exhibited significantly lower marginal quality in enamel. Indirect groups performed significantly better than direct groups in fracture resistance. Within the indirect restorations, both cast gold groups and zirconia full crowns exhibited the highest fracture resistance being superior to control teeth. Significances: Within the limits of this in vitro investigation, it can be concluded that any kind of indirect restoration with cusp replacement is suitable for ETT restoration when a certain cavity extension is exceeded. All indirect restorations, i.e., endocrowns, partial crowns, and full crowns showed a promising performance after in vitro fatigue-loading.

Fracture Resistance of Ceramic Crowns Supported with Indirect Chair-side Composite Cores

Abstract:Aims and objectives: To evaluate the influence of indirect chair-side polymerization of resin composite cores on the fracture resistance of overlaying IPS e.max Press crowns. Materials and methods: Root canals of 60 extracted premolars were prepared to receive #2 fiber posts after the crowns were sectioned 2 mm above the cervical line. In Groups 1-3 (n = 10 each), posts were luted to the prepared dowel spaces using self-adhesive resin cement. Resin composite cores were then bonded and incrementally built-up using Filtek Z250 XT, Filtek P60, and Filtek P90 resin composites. In Groups 4-6 (n = 10 each), the fabricated post-core systems were subjected to post-curing heat and pressure treatment before cementation to their respective teeth using self-adhesive resin cement. Another 10 sound premolars served as control. All teeth in the test and control groups were then subjected to standardized preparation to receive IPS e.max Press crowns before testing their fracture resistance and the mode of restorations' failure. The collected results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Tukey's tests on the past software used at α = 0.05 to stand on the significance of the detected differences. Results: Significant differences were detected between the fracture resistance of teeth in different groups (ANOVA, P = 2.857E-35). Crowns in Groups 4-6 provided higher fracture resistance than those in Groups 1-3 (Tukey's test, P < 0.05). Crowns in Groups 4 and 6 provided higher fracture resistance than the control, while those in Groups 2 and 3 provided lower fracture resistance than the control (Tukey's test, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Indirect composite cores improved the fracture resistance of IPS e.max Press crowns when compared to directly fabricated post and cores. The directly and indirectly polymerized nanohybrid, methacrylate-based composite (Filtek Z250 XT) cores yielded the highest fracture resistance for the utilized all-ceramic crowns.
In vitro performance and fracture resistance of novel CAD/CAM ceramic molar crowns loaded on implants and human teeth

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the fatigue and fracture resistance of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic molar crowns on dental implants and human teeth. Materials and methods: Molar crowns (n=48; n=8/group) were fabricated of a lithium-disilicate-strengthened lithium aluminosilicate glass ceramic (N). Surfaces were polished (P) or glazed (G). Crowns were tested on human teeth (T) and implant-abutment analogues (I) simulating a chairside (C, crown bonded to abutment) or labside (L, screw channel) procedure for implant groups. Polished/glazed lithium disilicate (E) crowns (n=16) served as reference. Combined thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TC: 3000×5℃/3000×55℃; ML: 1.2×106 cycles, 50 N) with antagonistic human molars (groups T) and steatite spheres (groups I) was performed under a chewing simulator. TCML crowns were then analyzed for failures (optical microscopy, SEM) and fracture force was determined. Data were statistically analyzed (Kolmogorow-Smirnov, one-way-ANOVA, post-hoc Bonferroni, α=.05). Results: All crowns survived TCML and showed small traces of wear. In human teeth groups, fracture forces of N crowns varied between 1214±293 N (NPT) and 1324±498 N (NGT), differing significantly (P≤.003) from the polished reference EPT (2044±302 N). Fracture forces in implant groups varied between 934±154 N (NGI_L) and 1782±153 N (NPI_C), providing higher values for the respective chairside crowns. Differences between polishing and glazing were not significant (P≥.066) between crowns of identical materials and abutment support. Conclusion: Fracture resistance was influenced by the ceramic material, and partly by the tooth or implant situation and the clinical procedure (chairside/labside). Type of surface finish (polishing/glazing) had no significant influence. Clinical survival of the new glass ceramic may be comparable to lithium disilicate.
Effect of material types on the fracture resistance of maxillary central incisors restored with CAD/CAM post and cores

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the fracture resistance and failure pattern of endodontically treated teeth with post and cores made of different CAD/CAM materials in comparison with cast post and cores. Materials and methods: A total of 40 maxillary central incisors were divided into four groups. Post and cores were fabricated using the following materials: fiber-reinforced composite, high-density polymer, polymer-infiltrated ceramic network, and nonprecious metal alloy as a control group. Specimens were covered with lithium disilicate crowns and subjected to thermomechanical cyclic loading followed by fracture resistance testing until failure. One-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni multiple comparison tests were used to determine significant differences between the four groups. The significance level was set at 0.05. 3D finite element analysis was then performed, and results were analyzed based on the von Mises stress distribution criteria and the maximum principal stress for the possible failure areas. Results: No statistically significant differences were found in the fracture resistance between the four groups. In terms of unrestorable failures, no significant differences were found among the tested groups. Conclusion: The tested post and cores have comparable fracture resistance to that of metallic cast post and cores in the anterior region. Clinical significance: Post and cores made of CAD/CAM materials offer an acceptable alternative for the restoration of anterior teeth.

Influence of Different Thicknesses of Monolithic Crowns Made from Different Resin-Bonded Glass Ceramic on Their Load-bearing Capacity (An in vitro Comparative Study)

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the load-bearing capacity of the full-coverage crowns made from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic LDGC (IPS e.max®, Ivoclar Vivadent) and 10% zirconia reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic ZLS (Dentsply DeTrey) with different thicknesses. Methods: Forty resin dies with supporting bases were duplicated from two prepared typodont teeth for all-ceramic crowns as a maxillary first molar. Forty crowns corresponding to each die were prepared and then they were divided into four groups: Group I (n 10) made from ZLS with a restoration thickness of (1.0 mm occlusally and 1.0 mm radially) and Group II (n 10) made from LDGC with a restoration thickness of (1.0 mm occlusally and 1.0 mm radially), and Group III (n 10) made from ZLS (1.5 mm occlusally and 1.5mm radially) and Group IV (n 10) made from LDGC (1.5 mm occlusally and 1.5 radially). All crowns were fabricated by chair side CEREC CAD/CAM and crystallized with Speed fire Dentsply Furness. The virolink resin cement (VariolinkII, Ivoclar Vivadent) was used to bond the crowns to the corresponding dies. All samples were thermo-cycled (10000 cycles between 5c and 55c) and tested for fracture resistance using a Universal testing machine at 0.5 mm/minute speed until failure. ANOVA and Tukey HSD test were used to compare the fracture resistance between groups. Results: The result demonstrates that the fracture resistance means and SD of ZLS with different thicknesses ranged from 572 N ± 122.002 to 1171±217.432 N, and those of LDGC with different thicknesses ranged from 625 N ±151.676 N to 845 N ±388.222 N. Conclusions: The fracture resistance increased with increasing crown thickness using different glass-ceramic materials.

Abstract:This study evaluated the fracture resistance of crown-restored incisors with different post-and-core systems and luting cements. Fifty intact maxillary central incisors were randomly assigned to five groups of 10 teeth each. Group 1 was restored with fibre posts (Snowpost) luted with an adhesive composite resin cement (Panavia F). Group 2 was restored with titanium alloy posts (Parapost) luted with the resin cement, and Group 3 with titanium alloy posts and a glass-ionomer cement (Fuji I). Composite cores (Clearfil Photocore) were built up in groups 1, 2 and 3. Group 4 was restored with cast post-and-cores luted with the resin cement, and group 5 with the cast post-and-cores and the glass-ionomer-cement served as a control group. All teeth were restored with metal-ceramic crowns. After thermal stressing, the specimen was then secured in a universal testing machine. Fracture loads and modes were recorded. One-way ANOVA and a Tukey test were used to determine significant differences between the failure loads of groups. Chi-square test was conducted for evaluation of the fracture modes. The fracture loads of groups 1 and 2 were significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). Group 1 had a significantly higher number of repairable fractures than the other four groups (P < 0.001). Within the limitations of this study, the results suggest that fibre posts can be recommended as an alternative to cast and prefabricated metallic posts. Composite resin cement cannot significantly improve fracture resistance of metallic post and crown-restored incisors.
Inhibition of growth of fungi pathogenic to man by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

Abstract:Ten strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia were tested by a cross-streaking method for in-vitro inhibition of 10 strains of fungi known to infect man; these were Candida krusei, C. keyfr, C. guillermondii, C. tropicalis, C. lusitaniae, C. parapsilosis, C. pseudotropicalis, C. albicans, C. glabrata and Aspergillus fumigatus. Significant inhibition of fungal growth was observed with all 10 strains of S. maltophilia, but not with Escherichia coli NCTC 10418, Staphylococcus aureus NCTC 6571 and Haemophilus influenzae NCTC 11931.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study was conducted to assess the marginal adaptation and fracture resistance of computer aided design/computer aided manufacturer (CAD-CAM) fabricated endocrowns restoring endodontically treated molars using different machinable blocks with thermomechanical loading protocols.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Devitalized mandibular molars were prepared in a standardized way and divided into 4 groups (n = 10) to receive CAD/CAM fabricated endocrowns using four materials (Lithium disilicate ceramics, polymer infiltrated ceramics, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramics and resin nanoceramics. Marginal gaps (µm) were measured using stereomicroscope before cementation and after cementation. After thermomechanical aging, marginal gap measurements were repeated, and then fracture resistance test was performed. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD multiple comparisons were used to assess the effect of material on the marginal gap before, after cementation, and after thermomechanical aging. One Way ANOVA was used to assess the effect of material on the fracture resistance.RESULTS: The difference between marginal gaps values of the tested materials was statistically insignificant but with significant increase after cementation and after thermomechanical aging. Cerasmart endocrowns showed the highest mean fracture load value (1508.5 ± 421.7N) with statistically significant difference than Vita Enamic endocrowns and Celtra Duo.CONCLUSION: The tested materials showed marginal vertical gap readings within the limits of clinically acceptable standards. Resin nanoceramics and lithium disilicate showed the highest values of fracture resistance followed by polymer infiltrated ceramics favoring their use for endocrown restorations.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The mechanical behavior of ceramic materials varies with the variation of their structure and mechanical properties. Accordingly, further investigation is always needed to explore the biomechanical behavior of recent materials when used as endocrowns before clinical trials.

Effects of 3 different residual root treatments after post-and-core restoration: An in vitro fracture resistance experiment and finite element analysis

Abstract:Statement of problem: Crown-lengthening procedures (CLPs) and orthodontic eruption procedures (OEPs) improve the biomechanical properties of residual root restoration. However, their use is limited by clinic time, cost, and crown-root ratio. An inner shoulder retention form (ISRF) overcomes these limits; however, whether ISRF meets the biomechanical requirements is unclear. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro and finite element analysis (FEA) study was to evaluate the effects of 3 residual root treatments (ISRF, CLP, and OEP) on premolar fracture resistance and stress distribution after post-and-core restoration. Material and methods: Thirty-two extracted mandibular second premolars were screened and randomly divided into 4 groups (n=8): a 2-mm ferrule restoration group (NPR2; control group) and 3 experimental groups (0.5×0.5-mm ISRF [ISRF0.5], 2-mm CLP [CLP2], and 2-mm OEP [OEP2]). After removal of the crown, endodontic treatment, and embedding and restoration, the specimens were loaded on a universal tester (crosshead speed of 0.1 mm per minute) at 30 degrees to the long axis of the tooth until fracture. Fracture resistance and pattern were analyzed. Four groups were added in FEA: 1-mm ferrule restoration group (NPR1), 1.0×1.0-mm ISRF (ISRF1), 1-mm CLP (CLP1), and 1-mm OEP (OEP1). The maximum principal stress peak (σmax), maximum displacement, and stress distribution were evaluated. Results: Mean fracture load ±standard deviation was 796.23 ±155.61 N (NPR2), 650.32 ±150.43 N (ISRF0.5), 385.38 ±149.92 N (CLP2), and 542.93 ±79.34 N (OEP2); these differences were statistically significant (F=12.724; P<.001). The main fracture patterns were decementation from the lingual crown margin and oblique root fracture in ferrule restoration groups and post-and-core decementation and oblique fracture starting from the middle proximal surface in the ISRF groups without ferrules. In FEA, the results of NPR2, ISRF0.5, CLP2, and OEP2 were consistent with the in vitro experiments and provided stress distribution and displacement information. Conclusions: Teeth with crown dentin ferrules showed higher fracture resistance and lower stress concentration. For residual roots, ISRF and OEP showed no differences, but CLP had lower fracture resistance and higher stress concentration.

Silicon nanoparticle based materials show especially low thermal conductivities due to their high number of interfaces, which increases the observed phonon scattering. The major obstacle with these materials is maintaining high electrical conductivity. Surface functionalization with phenylacetylene shows an electrical conductivity of 18.1 S m(-1) and Seebeck coefficient of 3228.8 μV K(-1) as well as maintaining a thermal conductivity of 0.1 W K(-1) m(-1). This gives a ZT of 0.6 at 300 K which is significant for a bulk silicon based material and is similar to that of other thermoelectric materials such as Mg(2)Si, PbTe and SiGe alloys.
Influence of fabrication settings on the in-vitro performance of subtractively manufactured resin-based molar crowns

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the influence of milling parameters on the durability during in-vitro aging-simulation, and fracture force of resin-based composite crowns. Materials and methods: Identical molar crowns (n=8 per group) were milled from resin-based composite crowns (Grandio, VOCO, Germany) with different processing speed (soft, normal, fast) or level of details (very high, high, low) form 98mm discs. To investigate the influence of cooling, one group was milled wet. The influence of polishing was tested in two groups. All crowns were adhesively bonded on standardized resin-based composite molars. Aging was performed with thermal cycling and mechanical loading (2x3000x5°C/55°C, 2min, H20 dist., 1.2x106 force 50N). Fracture forces were determined (v=1mm/min, Z010, Zwick, Germany). Statistics: Pearson-correlation, one-way ANOVA, Bonferroni post-hoc-tests (α=0.05). Results: All crowns survived TCML without any failures. The fracture values varied between 1237.3 ± 326.7N and 3308.6 ± 655.8N. Significant (p<0.001) differences between the individual manufacturing approaches were detected. Failure was categorized as a fracture of the crown and partial loosening of the crown. No different failure pattern was observed between the tested systems. Conclusion: A medium level of detail seems to be ideal to achieve highest fracture forces. No relationship existed between machining speed and fracture force. Fracture force was not affected by wet grinding. In individual cases, polishing reduced crown fracture values, due to reduced wall thickness.

Abstract:DOI:10.1097/ACO.0000000000000346 This issue of Current Opinion in Anesthesiology highlights new innovations in the perioperative care of infants and children. Advances in technology have brought novel surgical techniques into the operating room and, along with them, the need for anesthesiologists to fully understand new anatomic and physiologic challenges and their anesthetic implications. There is an ever-increasing interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques, and presented in this issue are several new procedures that are becoming more widely practiced in pediatric populations. Bariatric, urologic and neurosurgical endoscopic techniques have been adapted for smaller patients and are being utilized more frequently in the pediatric population. New approaches to blood salvage in young patients, global health initiatives for children and the management of behavioral disorders are topics that are constantly evolving and relevant to anesthesia practice. Despite increased awareness of the long-term health effects of obesity and the continued interest in promoting healthy eating, childhood obesity is fast becoming the most serious pediatric health concern. Bariatric surgery programs are emerging as one element in the multidisciplinary solution to control obesity in adolescents. Drs Samuels and Sjoblom (pp. 327–336) present important anesthetic considerations for patients undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgical procedures. They describe the comorbidities in these adolescents and the perioperative considerations that the anesthesiologist must be aware of both in the presurgical optimization period and in the postacute phase. Drs Houck, Munoz-San Julian and Nguyen (pp. 337– 344) present recent work on robotic-assisted minimally invasive urologic procedures. Insufflation of carbon dioxide into the peritoneal cavity has significant effects on many organ systems and the effects in pediatric patients may be significant. Fracture Strength of Endocrowns Fabricated From Three Different Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing Ceramic Materials: An In-Vitro Study

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Endocrown restorations have increased in popularity in recent years due to the advancement of both adhesive and restorative materials. The clinical success of endocrowns depends on several factors, including preparation design, material selection, fracture resistance, and marginal adaptation. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the fracture strength of endocrown restorations fabricated from three different computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) materials.METHODS: Thirty extracted mandibular first molars were selected. The teeth underwent conventional root canal treatment before being prepared for endocrown restoration. The teeth were allocated to three groups (n=10), corresponding to each of the three ceramic materials used to fabricate the endocrowns they would receive. The ceramic materials used were zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic (VITA Suprinity, VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany), polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic (VITA Enamic, VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany), and lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein). The specimens were scanned, and the digital impressions were transferred into design software to construct the endocrowns. The endocrowns were then milled and cemented. A universal testing machine (5969L3504, Instron, USA) was used for the fracture strength test at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until catastrophic failure occurred. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM Corp. Released 2015. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.RESULTS: The one-way analysis of the variance test indicated a significant difference in the fracture strength between the different ceramic groups tested (P=0.037). The Tukey posthoc test showed that the IPS e.max CAD group had marginally higher fracture strength values than the VITA Enamic group (P=055). No significant differences in fracture strength values were found between the VITA Enamic and VITA Suprinity groups or between the VITA Suprinity and IPS e.max CAD groups (P>0.05).CONCLUSION: The reported fracture strength values for all the tested materials were higher than the strength required to resist masticatory forces. Therefore, endocrowns fabricated using VITA Enamic, IPS e.max CAD, and VITA Suprinity CAD/CAM materials present restorations with a clinically acceptable fracture strength.

Abstract:Allocation of stored and incoming nutrients to reproduction determines an organism's age-specific fecundity curve. In holometabolous insects, differences among spe- cies in the shape of the curve are correlated with differences in the potential importance of adult food to reproduction. I examined allocation patterns underlying this association. Specific changes throughout life in body mass and reproductive effort were predicted to result from use of stored vs. incoming nutrients for reproduction and other metabolic needs at each age. Data for three nymphalid butterfly species, Euphydryas editha, Speyeria mor- monia, and Heliconius charitonius, were compared with the predictions. These three species differ in adult diet and fraction of oocytes mature at adult emergence (hence, potential for adult nutrients to be used to make eggs), with E. editha showing the least potential for use of adult nutrients in egg production and H. charitonius showing the greatest potential. For all three species, body mass declined with age, although nonlinearly for E. editha. This indicated that metabolic expenditures were greater than intake at all ages, and that a constant fraction of stored nutrients was allocated to reproduction and other metabolic uses at each age for E. editha. Reproductive effort also declined with age for all three species. The specific patterns seen suggested that incoming nutrients may be stored, to some extent, early in life and then used late in life by both S. mormonia and H. charitonius. The similarity between S. mormonia and H. charitonius is rather surprising, given the qualitative differ- ences in adult diet and suggests either that qualitative age-specific allocation patterns for incoming vs. stored nutrients may be independent of adult diet quality, or that the observed patterns are constrained by phylogenetic relatedness of these two species.
