Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:We consider the convergence of pointed multiply connected domains in the Caratheodory topology. Behaviour in the limit is largely determined by the properties of the simple closed hyperbolic geodesics which separate components of the complement. Of particular importance are those whose hyperbolic length is as short as possible which we call meridians of the domain. We prove a continuity result on convergence of such geodesics for sequences of pointed hyperbolic domains which converge in the Caratheodory topology to another pointed hyperbolic domain. Using this we describe an equivalent condition to Caratheodory convergence which is formulated in terms of Riemann mappings to standard slit domains.

Abstract:A well-known conjecture of Caratheodory states that the number of umbilic points on a closed convex surface in ${\mathbb E}^3$ must be greater than one. In this paper we prove this for $C^{3+\alpha}$-smooth surfaces. The Conjecture is first reformulated in terms of complex points on a Lagrangian surface in $TS^2$, viewed as the space of oriented geodesics in ${\mathbb E}^3$. Here complex and Lagrangian refer to the canonical neutral Kaehler structure on $TS^2$. We then prove that the existence of a closed convex surface with only one umbilic point implies the existence of a totally real Lagrangian hemisphere in $TS^2$, to which it is not possible to attach the edge of a holomorphic disc. The main step in the proof is to establish the existence of a holomorphic disc with edge contained on any given totally real Lagrangian hemisphere. To construct the holomorphic disc we utilize mean curvature flow with respect to the neutral metric. Long-time existence of this flow is proven by a priori estimates and we show that the flowing disc is asymptotically holomorphic. Existence of a holomorphic disc is then deduced from Schauder estimates.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for the semilinear wave equation. The Cauchy data are assumed to be conormal with respect to a point, and the source term is polynomial with respect to the solution and its first derivatives. Thanks to the study of multiplicative properties of some refined hyperbolic conormal space, we improve the known results about the nonlinear type singularities of the solution. We have a similar result for the propagation from the past of conormality with respect to the light cone. On considère le problème de Cauchy pour l'équation des ondes semi-linéaire à données de Cauchy conormales par rapport à un point, et à terme source polynomial par rapport à la solution et à ses dérivées premières. Grâce à l'étude des propriétés multiplicatives d'espaces conormaux hyperboliques précisés, on améliore les résultats connus sur la taille des singularités de type non-linéaire de la solution. On a un résultat analogue pour la propagation à partir du passé de la conormalité par rapport au cône de lumière.
Hyperbolic distortion and conformality at the boundary

Abstract:We characterize two classical types of conformality of a holomorphic self-map of the unit disk at a boundary point - existence of a finite angular derivative in the sense of Carathéodory and the weaker property of angle preservation - in terms of the non-tangential asymptotic behaviour of the hyperbolic distortion of the map. These characterizations are given purely with reference to the intrinsic metric geometry of the unit disk. In particular, we relate the classical Julia-Wolff-Carathéodory theorem with the case of equality in the Schwarz-Pick lemma at the boundary. We also provide an operator-theoretic characterization of the existence of a finite angular derivative based on Hilbert space methods. As an application we study the backward dynamics of discrete dynamical systems induced by holomorphic self-maps, and characterize the regularity of the associated pre-models in terms of a Blaschke-type condition involving the hyperbolic distortion along regular backward orbits.

Abstract:Is a sequence of Riemannian manifolds with positive scalar curvature, satisfying some conditions to keep the sequence reasonable, compact? What topology should one use for the convergence and what is the regularity of the limit space? In this paper we explore these questions by studying the case of a sequence of Riemannian manifolds which are conformal to the $n$-dimensional round sphere. We are able to show that the sequence of conformal factors are compact in several analytic senses and are able to establish $C^0$ convergence away from a singular set of small volume in a similar fashion as C. Dong. Under a bound on the total scalar curvature we are able to show that the limit conformal factor has weak positive scalar curvature in the sense of weakly solving the conformal positive scalar curvature equation.

The Julia-Wolff-Carathéodory theorem in convex finite type domains

Abstract:Rudin's version of the classical Julia-Wolff-Carathéodory theorem is a cornerstone of holomorphic function theory in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^d$. In this paper we obtain a complete generalization of Rudin's theorem for a holomorphic map $f\colon D\to D'$ between convex domains of finite type. In particular, given a point $\xi\in \partial D$ with finite dilation we show that the $K$-limit of $f$ at $\xi$ exists and is a point $\eta\in \partial D'$, and we obtain asymptotic estimates for all entries of the Jacobian matrix of the differential $df_z$ in terms of the multitypes at the points $\xi$ and at $\eta$. We introduce a generalization of Bracci-Patrizio-Trapani's pluricomplex Poisson kernel which, together with the dilation at $\xi$, gives a formula for the restricted $K$-limit of the normal component of the normal derivative $\langle df_z(n_\xi),n_\eta\rangle$. Our principal tools are methods from Gromov hyperbolicity theory, a scaling in the normal direction, and the strong asymptoticity of complex geodesics. To obtain our main result we prove a conjecture by Abate on the Kobayashi type of a vector $v$, proving that it is equal to the reciprocal of the line type of $v$, and we give new extrinsic characterizations of both $K$-convergence and restricted convergence to a point $\xi\in \partial D$ in terms of the multitype at $\xi$.

Abstract:We study unparametrized conformal circles, or called conformal geodesics, study diffeomorphisms mapping conformal circles to conformal circles in pseudo-Riemannian conformal manifolds. We show that such local diffeomorphisms are conformal local diffeomorphisms. Our result extends the result of Yano and Tomonaga. We also present a holographic interpretation for our result on Poincaré-Einstein manifolds. The proofs take suitable variations of conformal circles.

Abstract:We prove a general result on convergence of interfaces in the critical planar Ising model to conformally invariant curves absolutely continuous with respect to SLE(3). Our setup includes multiple interfaces on arbitrary finitely connected domains, and we also treat the radial SLE case. In the case of simply and doubly connected domains, the limiting processes are described explicitly in terms of rational and elliptic functions, respectively.

On constant mean curvature 1-immersions of surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Motivated by the work of Bryant on constant mean curvature (CMC) $1$-immersions of surfaces into the hyperbolic space H^3 and after the results of Tarantello (2023), we pursue a possible parametrization for the moduli space of (CMC) 1-immersions of a surface S (closed, orientable and of genus >1) into hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Those immersions enter as "critical" object in our analysis. In fact, they can be attained only as limits of the (CMC) c-immersions (as c tends to 1), obtained in Huang-Lucia-Tarantello (2022), for |c|<1. However, such passage to the limit can be prevented by possible blow-up phenomena, so that the pullback metrics of the (CMC) c-immersions may yield (at the limit) to a singular metric with conical singularities at finitely many points (the blow-up points). In case of genus g=2, blow up can occur only at a single point, and in Tarantello (2023) it was shown how it could be prevented and the passage to the limit ensured in terms of the Kodaira map. In this note we sharpen this result and for genus g=2, we obtaina condition (we believe sharp) which involves only the Kodaira map on the six Weierstrass points. In addition we tackle the case of higher genus, where multiple blow-up points occur. In this case, we need to identify a suitable replacement of the Kodaira map, now defined on the space of non-zero effective divisors. More importantly, we need to improve in a substantial way the asymptotic analysis of Tarantello (2023) limited to the case of "blow-up" with minimal mass. In this direction we give a contribution which best applies to the case of genus g=3, but also provides a relevant step and a convincing indication on what should happen in the general case.

Abstract:The paper proves a result on the convergence of discrete conformal maps to the Riemann mappings for Jordan domains. It is a counterpart of Rodin-Sullivan's theorem on convergence of circle packing mappings to the Riemann mapping in the new setting of discrete conformality. The proof follows the same strategy that Rodin-Sullivan used by establishing a rigidity result for regular hexagonal triangulations of the plane and estimating the quasiconformal constants associated to the discrete conformal maps.

Abstract:Based on uniform CR Sobolev inequality and Moser iteration, this paper investigates the convergence of closed pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. In terms of the subelliptic inequality, the set of closed normalized pseudo-Einstein manifolds with some uniform geometric conditions is compact. Moreover, the set of closed normalized Sasakian η-Einstein (2n + 1)-manifolds with Carnot-Carathéodory distance bounded from above, volume bounded from below and L 1 2 norm of pseudo-Hermitian curvature bounded is C∞ compact. As an application, we will deduce some pointed convergence of complete Kähler cones with Sasakian manifolds as their links.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the convergence of distances associated to converging structures of Lipschitz vector fields and continuously varying norms on a smooth manifold. We prove that, under a mild controllability assumption on the limit vector-fields structure, the distances associated to equi-Lipschitz vector-fields structures that converge uniformly on compact subsets, and to norms that converge uniformly on compact subsets, converge locally uniformly to the limit Carnot-Carathéodory distance. In the case in which the limit distance is boundedly compact, we show that the convergence of the distances is uniform on compact sets. We show an example in which the limit distance is not boundedly compact and the convergence is not uniform on compact sets. We discuss several examples in which our convergence result can be applied. Among them, we prove a subFinsler Mitchell's Theorem with continuously varying norms, and a general convergence result for Carnot-Carathéodory distances associated to subspaces and norms on the Lie algebra of a connected Lie group.

Abstract:Roughly, a conformal tiling of a Riemann surface is a tiling where each tile is a suitable conformal image of a Euclidean regular polygon. In 1997, Bowers and Stephenson constructed an edge-to-edge conformal tiling of the complex plane using conformally regular pentagons. In contrast, we show that for all $n \geq 7$, there is no edge-to-edge conformal tiling of the complex plane using conformally regular $n$-gons. More generally, we discuss a relationship between the combinatorial curvature at each vertex of the conformal tiling and the universal cover (sphere, plane, or disc) of the underlying Riemann surface. This result follows from the work of Stone (1976) and Oh (2005) through a rich interplay between Riemannian geometry and combinatorial geometry. We provide an exposition of these proofs and some new applications to conformal tilings.

Abstract:Let ℚ3 be the common conformal compactification space of the Lorentzian space forms $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{1} ,\mathbb{S}^{3}_{1} \;{\text{and}}\;\mathbb{H}^{3}_{1} $. We study the conformal geometry of space-like surfaces in ℚ3. It is shown that any conformal CMC-surface in ℚ3 must be conformally equivalent to a constant mean curvature surface in $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{1} ,\mathbb{S}^{3}_{1} \;{\text{and}}\;\mathbb{H}^{3}_{1} $. We also show that if x : M → ℚ3 is a space-like Willmore surface whose conformal metric g has constant curvature K, then either K = −1 and x is conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{1}$, or K = 0 and x is conformally equivalent to the surface $\mathbb{H}^{1} {\left( {\frac{1}{{{\sqrt 2 }}}} \right)} \times \mathbb{H}^{1} {\left( {\frac{1}{{{\sqrt 2 }}}} \right)}\;{\text{in}}\;\mathbb{H}^{3}_{1} .$
