Abstract:We consider facet-Hamiltonian cycles of polytopes, defined as cycles in their skeleton such that every facet is visited exactly once. These cycles can be understood as optimal watchman routes that guard the facets of a polytope. We consider the existence of such cycles for a variety of polytopes, the facets of which have a natural combinatorial interpretation. In particular, we prove the following results: - Every permutahedron has a facet-Hamiltonian cycle. These cycles consist of circular sequences of permutations of $n$ elements, where two successive permutations differ by a single adjacent transposition, and such that every subset of $[n]$ appears as a prefix in a contiguous subsequence. With these cycles we associate what we call rhombic strips which encode interleaved Gray codes of the Boolean lattice, one Gray code for each rank. These rhombic strips correspond to simple Venn diagrams. - Every generalized associahedron has a facet-Hamiltonian cycle. This generalizes the so-called rainbow cycles of Felsner, Kleist, Mütze, and Sering (SIDMA 2020) to associahedra of any finite type. We relate the constructions to the Conway-Coxeter friezes and the bipartite belts of finite type cluster algebras. - Graph associahedra of wheels, fans, and complete split graphs have facet-Hamiltonian cycles. For associahedra of complete bipartite graphs and caterpillars, we construct facet-Hamiltonian paths. The construction involves new insights on the combinatorics of graph tubings. We also consider the computational complexity of deciding whether a given polytope has a facet-Hamiltonian cycle and show that the problem is NP-complete, even when restricted to simple 3-dimensional polytopes.

Abstract:We provide a simple algorithm for constructing Hamiltonian graph cycles (visiting every vertex exactly once) on a set of arbitrarily large finite subgraphs of aperiodic two-dimensional Ammann-Beenker (AB) tilings. Using this result, and the discrete scale symmetry of AB tilings, we find exact solutions to a range of other problems which lie in the complexity class NP-complete for general graphs. These include the equal-weight traveling salesperson problem, providing, for example, the most efficient route a scanning tunneling microscope tip could take to image the atoms of physical quasicrystals with AB symmetries; the longest path problem, whose solution demonstrates that collections of flexible molecules of any length can adsorb onto AB quasicrystal surfaces at density one, with possible applications to catalysis; and the three-coloring problem, giving ground states for the $q$-state Potts model ($q \ge 3$) of magnetic interactions defined on the planar dual to AB, which may provide useful models for protein folding.

Abstract:In this series of papers, the primary goal is to enumerate Hamiltonian cycles (HC's) on the grid cylinder graphs $P_{m+1}\times C_n$, where $n$ is allowed to grow whilst $m$ is fixed. In Part~I, we studied the so-called non-contractible HC's. Here, in Part~II, we proceed further on to the contractible case. We propose two different novel characterizations of contractible HC's, from which we construct digraphs for enumerating the contractible HC's. Given the impression which the computational data for $m \leq 9$ convey, we conjecture that the asymptotic domination of the contractible HC's versus the non-contractible HC's, among the total number of HC's, depends on the parity of $m$.}

Abstract:We construct a local tri-Hamiltonian structure of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy, and compute the central invariants of the associated bihamiltonian structures. We show that the central invariants of one of the bihamiltonian structures are equal to 1/24, and the dispersionless limit of this bihamiltonian structure coincides with the one that is defined on the jet space of the Frobenius manifold associated with the Gromov-Witten invariants of local CP1. This result provides support for the validity of Brini's conjecture on the relation of these Gromov-Witten invariants with the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy.

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

Abstract:Semi-Equivelar maps are generalizations of Archimedean solids to the surfaces other than 2-sphere. There are eight semi-equivelar maps of types $\{3^{3},4^{2}\}$, $\{3^{2},4,3,4\}$, $\{6,3,6,3\}$, $\{3^{4},6\}$, $\{4,8^{2}\}$, $\{3,12^{2}\}$, $\{4,6,12\}$, $\{6,4,3,4\}$ exist on the torus. In this article we show the existence of Hamiltonian cycle in each semi-equivelar map on the torus except the map of type $\{3,12^{2}\}$. This result gives the partial solution to the conjecture which is given by Gr$\ddot{u}$nbaum \cite{grunbaum} and Nash-Williams \cite{nash williams} that every 4-connected graph on the torus is Hamiltonian.

Abstract:A family of heptagon relations -- algebraic imitations of five-dimensional Pachner moves -- is constructed, parameterized by simplicial 3-cocycles. These relations are shown to possess a nontrivial "heptagon cohomology", which yields invariants of a pair "manifold, its 3rd cohomology class".

Abstract:The study of bipartite maps (or Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants) is closely connected with geometry, mathematical physics and free probability. Here we study these objects from their permutation factorization formulation using a novel character theory approach. We first present some general symmetric function expressions for the number of products of two permutations respectively from two arbitrary, but fixed, conjugacy classes indexed by $\alpha$ and $\gamma$ which produce a permutation with $m$ cycles. Our next objective is to derive explicit formulas for the cases where $\alpha$ corresponds to full cycles, i.e., one-face bipartite maps. We prove a far-reaching explicit formula, and show that the number for any $\gamma$ can be iteratively reduced to that of products of two full cycles, which implies an efficient dimension-reduction algorithm for building a database of all these numbers. Note that the number for products of two full cycles can be computed by the Zagier-Stanley formula. Also, in a unified way, we easily prove the celebrated Harer-Zagier formula and Jackson's formula, and we obtain explicit formulas for several new families as well.

Abstract:We study an algebraic cycle of the form $Z_0= r {\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}+\check r \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}$, $r \in{\mathbb N},\check r \in{\mathbb Z},\ \ 1\leq r , |\check r |\leq 10,\ \ \gcd ( r ,\check r )=1$, inside the cubic Fermat variety $X_0$ of even dimension $n\geq 4$ and with $\dim\left ({\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\cap \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\right)=m$. We take a smooth deformation space $\sf S$ of $X_0$ such that the triple $(X_0, {\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2}, \check{\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2})$ becomes rigid. For $m=\frac{n}{2}-2$ and for many examples of $N\in{\mathbb N}$ and $n$ we show that the $N$-th order Hodge locus attached to $Z_0$ is smooth and reduced of positive dimension if and only if $( r ,\check r )=(1,-1)$. In this case, the underlying algebraic cycles are conjectured to be cubic ruled cycles. For $m=\frac{n}{2}-3$ the same happens for all choices of coefficients $ r $ and $\check r $ and we do not know what kind of algebraic cycles might produce such Hodge cycles. The first case gives us a conjectural description of a component of the Hodge locus, and the second case gives us strong computer assisted evidences for the existence of new Hodge cycles for cubic hypersurfaces. Whereas the well-known construction of Hodge cycles due to D. Mumford and A. Weil for CM abelian varieties, and Y. Andr\'e's motivated cycles can be described in theoretical terms, the full proof of the existence of our Hodge cycle seems to be only possible with more powerful computing machines.

Abstract:We describe many different realizations with integer coordinates for the associahedron (i.e. the Stasheff polytope) and for the cyclohedron (i.e. the Bott-Taubes polytope) and compare them with the permutahedron of type A and B, respectively. The coordinates are obtained by an algorithm which uses an oriented Coxeter graph of type An or Bn as the only input data and which specializes to a procedure presented by J.-L. Loday for a certain orientation of An. The described realizations have cambrian fans of type A and B as normal fans. This settles a conjecture of N. Reading for cambrian lattices of these types.

This conjecture has recently been settled for graphs defined by intersecting set systems, which feature prominently throughout combinatorics. In this expository article, we retrace these developments and give an overview of the many different ingredients in the proofs.

Abstract:Exceptional cycles in a triangulated category T with Serre duality, introduced by N. Broomhead, D. Pauksztello, and D. Ploog, have a notable impact on the global structure of T. In this paper we show that if T is homotopy-like, then any exceptional 1-cycle is indecomposable and at the mouth (i.e., the middle term of the Auslander-Reiten triangle ending at it is indecomposable); and any object in an exceptional n-cycle with n≥3 is at the mouth. Let A be an indecomposable gentle k-algebra with A≠k. The Hom spaces between string complexes at the mouth are explicitly determined. The main result classifies “almost all” the exceptional n-cycles in Kb(A-proj), using characteristic components and their AG-invariants, except those exceptional 1-cycles which are band complexes. Namely, the mouth of a characteristic component C of Kb(A-proj) forms a unique exceptional cycle in C, up to an equivalent relation ≈; if the quiver of A is not of type A3, this gives all the exceptional n-cycle in Kb(A-proj) with n≥2, up to ≈; and a string complex is an exceptional 1-cycle if and only if it is at the mouth of a characteristic component with AG-invariant (1,m). However, a band complex at the mouth is possibly not an exceptional 1-cycle.

Abstract:We study the statistics of Hamiltonian cycles on various families of bicolored random planar maps (with the spherical topology). These families fall into two groups corresponding to two distinct universality classes with respective central charges $c=-1$ and $c=-2$. The first group includes generic $p$-regular maps with vertices of fixed valency $p\geq 3$, whereas the second group comprises maps with vertices of mixed valencies, and the so-called rigid case of $2q$-regular maps ($q\geq 2$) for which, at each vertex, the unvisited edges are equally distributed on both sides of the cycle. We predict for each class its universal configuration exponent $\gamma$, as well as a new universal critical exponent $\nu$ characterizing the number of long-distance contacts along the Hamiltonian cycle. These exponents are theoretically obtained by using the Knizhnik, Polyakov and Zamolodchikov (KPZ) relations, with the appropriate values of the central charge, applied, in the case of $\nu$, to the corresponding critical exponent on regular (hexagonal or square) lattices. These predictions are numerically confirmed by analyzing exact enumeration results for $p$-regular maps with $p=3,4,\ldots,7$, and for maps with mixed valencies $(2,3)$, $(2,4)$ and $(3,4)$.

On the existence of Hamiltonian cycles in hypercubes

Abstract:For each pair of positive integers $(a,b)$ such that $a \geq 0$ and $b > 1$, the present paper provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Hamiltonian cycles visiting all the vertices of any $k$-dimensional grid $\{0,1\}^k \subset \mathbb{R}^k$ and whose associated Euclidean distance is equal to $\sqrt{a^2+b^2}$. Our solution extends previously stated results in fairy chess on the existence of closed Euclidean $(a,b)$-leapers tours for $2 \times 2 \times \cdots \times 2$ chessboards, where the (Euclidean) knight identifies the $(1,2)$-leaper.

Categorical Pentagon Relations and Koszul Duality

Abstract:The Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula is known to control the jumping behavior of BPS state counting indices in four-dimensional theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. The formula can take two equivalent forms: a ``fermionic'' form with nice positivity properties and a ``bosonic'' form with a clear physical interpretation. In an important class of examples, the fermionic form of the formula has a mathematical categorification involving PBW bases for a Cohomological Hall Algebra. The bosonic form lacks an analogous categorification. We construct an equivalence of chain complexes which categorifies the simplest example of the bosonic wall-crossing formula: the bosonic pentagon identity for the quantum dilogarithm. The chain complexes can be promoted to differential graded algebras which we relate to the PBW bases of the relevant CoHA by a certain quadratic duality. The equivalence of complexes then follows from the relation between quadratic duality and Koszul duality. We argue that this is a special case of a general phenomenon: the bosonic wall-crossing formulae are categorified to equivalences of $A_\infty$ algebras which are quadratic dual to PBW presentations of algebras which underlie the fermionic wall-crossing formulae. We give a partial interpretation of our differential graded algebras in terms of a holomorphic-topological version of BPS webs.

Abstract:A conjecture by Rafla from 1988 asserts that every simple drawing of the complete graph $K_n$ admits a plane Hamiltonian cycle. It turned out that already the existence of much simpler non-crossing substructures in such drawings is hard to prove. Recent progress was made by Aichholzer et al. and by Suk and Zeng who proved the existence of a plane path of length $\Omega(\log n / \log \log n)$ and of a plane matching of size $\Omega(n^{1/2})$ in every simple drawing of $K_{n}$.

Abstract:We introduce three area preserving maps with phase space structures which resemble circle packings. Each mapping is derived from a kicked Hamiltonian system with one of three different phase space geometries (planar, hyperbolic or spherical) and exhibits an infinite number of coexisting stable periodic orbits which appear to `pack' the phase space with circular resonances.

Abstract:Inspired by Sheehan’s conjecture that no 4 4 -regular graph contains exactly one hamiltonian cycle, we prove results on hamiltonian cycles in regular graphs and nearly regular graphs. We fully disprove a conjecture of Haythorpe on the minimum number of hamiltonian cycles in regular hamiltonian graphs, thereby extending a result of Zamfirescu, as well as correct and complement Haythorpe’s computational enumerative results from [Exp. Math. 27 (2018), no. 4, 426–430]. Thereafter, we use the Lovász Local Lemma to extend Thomassen’s independent dominating set method. This extension allows us to find a second hamiltonian cycle that inherits linearly many edges from the first hamiltonian cycle. Regarding the limitations of this method, we answer a question of Haxell, Seamone, and Verstraete, and settle the first open case of a problem of Thomassen by showing that for k ∈ { 5 , 6 } k \in \{5, 6\} there exist infinitely many k k -regular hamiltonian graphs having no independent dominating set with respect to a prescribed hamiltonian cycle. Motivated by an observation of Aldred and Thomassen, we prove that for every κ ∈ { 2 , 3 } \kappa \in \{ 2, 3 \} and any positive integer k k , there are infinitely many non-regular graphs of connectivity κ \kappa containing exactly one hamiltonian cycle and in which every vertex has degree 3 3 or 2 k 2k .
