Abstract:In the 1960s Arnold conjectured that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed connected symplectic manifold $(M,\omega)$ should have at least as many contractible fixed points as a smooth function on $M$ has critical points. Such a conjecture can be seen as a natural generalization of Poincaré's last geometric theorem and is one of the most famous (and still nowadays open in its full generality) problems in symplectic geometry. In this paper, we build on a recent approach of the authors and Izydorek to the Arnold conjecture on $\mathbb C\mathbb P^n$ to show that the (degenerate) Arnold conjecture holds for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $\phi$ of $\mathbb T^{2m}\times \mathbb C\mathbb P^n$, $m,n\geq 1$, which are $C^0$-close to the identity in the $\mathbb C \mathbb P^n$-direction, namely that any such $\phi$ has at least $\text{CL}(\mathbb T^{2m}\times \mathbb C\mathbb P^n)+1= 2m+n+1$ contractible fixed points.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the verification of the Degenerate Arnold Conjecture on the specific manifold \(T^{2m} \times \mathbb{CP}^n\). Specifically, the authors hope to prove that for a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism \(\varphi\) which is \(C^0\)-close to the identity map, the number of its contractible fixed points is at least \(2^{m + n+ 1}=CL(T^{2m} \times \mathbb{C}P^n)+ 1\).
### Problem Background
The Arnold Conjecture was proposed by V.I. Arnold in the 1960s. It asserts that on a closed symplectic manifold \((M,\omega)\), the number of contractible fixed points of any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism \(\varphi\) should be no less than the number of critical points of a smooth function \(f:M\rightarrow\mathbb{R}\). Expressed in a formula:
\[|Fix(\varphi)|\geq \text{crit}(M):=\min\{|crif(f)|\mid f:M\rightarrow\mathbb{R}\text{ is a smooth function}\}\]
where \(Fix(\varphi)\) represents the set of fixed points of \(\varphi\), and \(crif(f)\) represents the set of critical points of \(f\).
### Main Contributions of the Paper
In this paper, the authors focus on the specific manifold \(T^{2m} \times \mathbb{CP}^n\) and consider those Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms \(\varphi\) which are \(C^0\)-close to the identity map in the \(\mathbb{CP}^n\) direction. They introduce a new method, based on Conley theory (appropriately revised), to prove that the number of contractible fixed points of these Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms satisfies the following inequality:
\[|Fix(\varphi)|\geq 2^{m + n+ 1}=CL(T^{2m} \times \mathbb{C}P^n)+ 1\]
Here \(CL(M)\) represents the cup - length of the manifold \(M\), that is, the maximum length of non - zero elements in the cohomology ring of \(M\).
### Main Results
The main result of the paper is Theorem 1, which shows that on the closed symplectic manifold \((T^{2m} \times \mathbb{CP}^n,\omega_{std}\oplus\omega_{FS})\), for a Hamiltonian function \(H_0\) satisfying certain conditions, the corresponding Hamiltonian diffeomorphism \(\varphi\) satisfies the above inequality. This provides a strict mathematical proof for the Degenerate Arnold Conjecture to hold on this specific manifold.
### Summary
The main purpose of this paper is to verify the correctness of the Degenerate Arnold Conjecture on the \(T^{2m} \times \mathbb{CP}^n\) manifold by introducing new methods and tools, thus providing important progress for a classical problem in the field of symplectic geometry.
